Microsoft will follow up its limited-run Blue Dragon Xbox 360 bundle with an even more limited Lost Planet bundle. Teaming with Capcom, Microsoft will package the artic shooter with the premium version of its next-gen console, along with a Lost Planet-branded headset, 3 months of Xbox Live Gold, and voucher to download extra maps. To be released on December 21, the bundle will be limited to a run of 5,000, retailing for ¥44,800 (roughly $380).Microsoft is making a statement this holiday, but can Japanese consumers hear it? (Ninty and Sony are also blowing their horns loudly this time of year.)

Earlier this month, Capcom launched a community site for their highly promising third-person frag-fest Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. Aside from the forum, there's a blog manned by "the voice of Capcom" Brian Dunn. He claims he's a real dude (Japanese translator), not just a marketing robot and judging by the Gears of War contraband in his cubicle, he's telling the truth. You can also down a Lost Planet skin for WMP, or at least you will be able to when the link starts working. LP:EC hits January 16.

  • Lost Planet Collector's Edition is weak

1UP reports that there is a Lost Planet Collector's Edition on the way. I'll give you a minute to let the shock subside. And there we go. Sure, the news of a special edition isn't all that exciting. It's what's inside the case that's a little unsettling. There are two extras in the undoubtedly slick metal case. The first is an art manual, which is always cool. It's the second bit that's disturbing. The other item is a token for a free downloadable map. That's it.This raises some questions. Assuming that the map will be available when the game ships, why not just include it on the disc? How much does the map cost for those who don't get the special edition? Think about it. If you're spending US $69.99 on a special edition, is a free map really a deal? If you can live without the art book, wouldn't it actually be cheaper to pick up the regular edition and pay the 2-5 dollars for the map? Unless special edition owners get early access to the map -- or the map is exorbitantly priced -- it just doesn't make much sense. Any thoughts?[Via Evil Avatar]

  • X06: Lost Planet multiplayer impressions

Capcom sure knows how to do an action game. That's the first thing that popped into my head when adding Lost Planet: Extreme Condition to my list of simple Capcom action games like Mega Man, Final Fight and Dead Rising that just seem perfectly tuned for hitting and/or killing stuff. The single-player demo at X06 was unfortunately the same one available on Xbox Live for months now, but a new multiplayer mode showed off how much better things can get with human opponents. It's basically a kill-or-be-killed deathmatch situation, but managing your health and heat energy as you fight adds a slight twist to the team-based standoffs. The play area seemed a little too large and barren for eight player deathmatch, but the open space allowed plenty of opportunity to double back and sneak up on unsuspecting opponents.Once you do find your target, tight, responsive controls make aiming a breeze and using the shoulder buttons to do quick 90 degree turns really helps with manuevering in the heat of the fight. Climbing into a vital suit and blasting away at the suddenly small-seeming opposition is great fun too, but the suit's plodding pace makes this less than viable as a long term strategy. The multiplayer mode seems like a solid addition to what is shaping up to be yet another impressive Capcom action game. Now how about giving us some more single player demo levels, huh?Previously: Lost Planet single player impressions from E3

  • Rumor: RE5 to reside solely on 360 [update 1]

Perhaps you noticed that there was absolutely no Resident Evil 5 information revealed at TGS -- not even a peep. This has led some to speculate that somebody -- Microsoft -- has secured the exclusive rights to the game. What's more, the head honcho of 360 Japan, Takashi Sensui, gave a tantalizing reply when questioned directly about the issue: "All I can say is we are very good friends with Mr. Inafune." As any good Fanboy already knows, Mr. (Keiji) Inafune is the producer behind Resident Evil 5 as well as the runaway smash hit, Dead Rising. Wait a minute, Scooby. Didn't we run a story last month about Capcom ending PS3 exclusives as a result of Dead Rising's high sales numbers? And Lost Planet looks like it could be pretty big, too. Hmmm, this RE5 exclusivity business just might have some legs after all. If only there were some huge convention where Capcom and Microsoft could reveal such a bombshell, somewhere in Europe. Spain perhaps. [Thanks, The1] Update: It looks like Capcom has officially shot this rumor down. Speaking with CVG, a spokesperson said, "Resident Evil 5 will release on PS3 and Xbox 360 as announced. There a no plans for an exclusive with the game." Oh, well. At least we know it won't be exclusive for that other console either. Thanks to Abraham for the tip.

  • TGS 06: Best in Show, according to CESA

The mighty Computer Entertainment Software Association of Japan revealed the eleven titles they thought were the "best in show." Of those titles, two were exclusives for the PSP. Here are the winners, in no particular order: Elebits (Konami) for the Wii Gyakuten Saiban 4 [Phoenix Wright] (Capcom) for the DS Gran Turismo HD (Sony) for the PS3 The Eye of Judgment (Sony) for the PS3 Seiken Densetsu 4 [Dawn of Mana] (Square Enix) for the PS2 Tales of Destiny (Namco Bandai) for the PS2 Blue Dragon (Microsoft) for the Xbox 360 Heavenly Sword (Sony) for the PS3 Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (Konami) for the PSP Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Capcom) for the PSP Lost Planet (Capcom) for the Xbox 360 This should come as no surprise. There are so many excellent games at TGS this year, that it must've been nigh impossible to even narrow the list down. But, for those of you that are battling a fanboy war, you might want to note that PSP got two titles, and the DS only got one.[Via Joystiq]

  • Joystiq hands-on: Lost Planet multiplayer (Xbox 360)

The following is a compilation of the best scenes we either experienced or watched during our time with Lost Planet's multiplayer game. Other than a few minor drops in framerate, we were very impressed with the 8-player battle. As our experience was only system link, it'll be interesting to see how the game fares over Xbox Live.We start as the blue team in the bottom of an icy valley. As we move uphill, the red team ambushes, lobbing a half dozen grenades toward our group. We disband, and I climb left up a small hill behind the remains of a brick building. As one foe pursue me, I throw a gum grenade onto an adjacent wall. I run away and they pass the remains just as the bomb goes off, knocked down both the brick wall and my assailant.Practicing with my grappling hook, I scale to the top of a nearby building and jump across the rooftops. Eventually I come upon a sniper rifle. Climbing up an adjacent lookout tower, I sight a lonely gunner from across the map. Locking him in my sights, I fire one shot into his stomach. He dashes left behind a wall, but I can still make out his cowering, tranlucent figure. I fire two shots that don't hurt him but knock down his cover, he continues left and jumps down into a hole. As his head finds its way into my cross hairs, an ill-timed framerate hiccup saved his life. I quickly realize the lag was caused by the giant mech who swiftly blows me away.

We know, it's been a slow couple of days if you don't like RPGs, and even though X360F is the one that brought you videos of all this turn based crap, we feel your pain. As such, we'd like to make amends with not one, but two videos of games that don't star doe-eyed pixie people with spiky hair. The first is a very long video of Viva Piñata that you can see above. The second video -- one we imagine is more interesting to action fans -- is of Lost Planet. Make sure you watch for the multiplayer madness at the end. Let's never fight again, okay?

  • Lost Planet is 360 exclusive and will be out in January

GameSpot recently cornered Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi to confirm that Lost Planet will stay on the Xbox 360 despite rumors that it wouldn't be the exclusive it was thought to be. Also, Takeuchi has revealed that the anticipated title will come to stores in January 2007. Takeuchi says the plan was to always keep Lost Planet on the 360 and the 360 only: Lost Planet is an exclusive Xbox 360 title. Typically when the development team sets out to create a game, we focus development of the title on a single platform and for Lost Planet that platform is the Xbox 360. We have no plans at this time of porting to or developing for another console as this would potentially dilute the final product. Ever since E3 and the demo hit Xbox Live, we've been eagerly anticipating this chilly third-person shooter. How about you? [Thanks, Zelda Master]

  • Could Lost Planet come to PS3?

    by

Speaking to 1UP, Lost Planet co-producer Jun Takeuchi (alongside Keiji Inafune) admitted that the sci-fi shooter might eventually come to the PlayStation 3. "We will try to keep it as a 360 exclusive," he said, "but, from the company's point of view, when you think about the business, in the future it's something [port the game to PS3] we might have to do." The Xbox 360's performance is rather abysmal in Japan, but we can safely say that the Microsoft's box has always been one of the top 10 best-selling game consoles in the Land of the Rising Sun. Needless to say, for Capcom to reach the largest possible audience with its IP, they might have to port it to the PS3. It all depends on Sony's success, and it wouldn't come out for some time after Lost Planet hits the Xbox 360. Capcom has ported successful IPs before. At one time, Resident Evil 4 was a GameCube exclusive, but was later ported onto the PlayStation 2 following critical acclaim. See Also:Behold! Lost Planet multiplayer footage!

Capcom has announced plans to unveil Lost Planet's multiplayer at GC 2006 in Leipzig next month. Attendees will be given a chance to test out the game's 4v4 team battle mode. Sounds like standard fare. So what's the catch?Capcom's Hiroshi Tobisawa reports that over 400,000 Xbox Live users have downloaded the single-player demo. If the company hopes to sell as many retail versions of the game, the development team would do well to distinguish Lost Planet's online modes. Here's to hoping Xbox Live multiplayer isn't merely an afterthought tacked on to spruce up the list of gameplay features on the back of the box.

That being said, our current goal is 32 people online at the same time. Well, that's my goal. The team keeps saying 16's more realistic, but I keep telling them to do 32.I would have asked him why more companies don't release quality demos nine months out.[Thanks 8BitNinja]

Capcom's third-person Xbox 360 shooter shares many qualities with the brilliant Resident Evil 4, most notably in its emphasis on survival. The planet you find yourself on is unbelievably harsh, with thick banks of snow, blizzards and freakish monsters attempting to foil your progress at every turn. That's why you're equipped with up to three big and satisfying guns (with more mysteriously littering the icy wastelands) and a suit that keeps you nice and warm. Unfortuately, the suit requires an orange substance called T-Eng to maintain your body temperature and it is continuously exhausted as you traipse about in the cold environment. It's awfully convenient then, that the vicious creatures so fond of attacking you release this substance upon their death. Kill to stay alive.
