Tonight at 11:45 PM ET Elon Musk will deliver the first production Tesla Model 3s during a livestreamed event, and now the company has some new ads to play during any down time. Fans of its cars and technology submitted their own advertisements for the Project Loveday contest, which was inspired by a 10-year-old's letter. Musk announced the three winners tonight on his Twitter account, with YouTuber and tech reviewer Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD nabbing the top spot. The winner has been promised a trip to a Tesla product launch, and Tesla said it will play the most popular videos on the stream tonight. The winning isn't just a slick look at the car, it also shows off some of the high tech features like Summon and its appropriately-named Ludicrous Mode acceleration. Tesla has eschewed traditional advertising for its vehicles so far, but now that it has so many high quality videos to pull from -- and a car with a price closer to the mainstream -- maybe that could change.

The Model 3 might be Tesla's most affordable electric car, but that doesn't mean it's going to be slow off the starting line. Tesla founder Elon Musk has confirmed that the new vehicle will be available with a Ludicrous Mode option, vastly improving its acceleration. The exact change in performance? For now that's still a mystery, but as means of comparison the standard Model 3 can go from zero to 60MPH in "under six seconds." Anything faster and it'll be competitive with the base-level Model S.

All it requires is a single press on the car's 17-inch touchscreen and the car gains the ability to go from a standing start to 60MPH in just 2.8 seconds. You can't be told how fast that is -- you need to experience it for yourself. That's exactly what 15 Brits did one April evening, when I took the Tesla's fully electric car onto some unrestricted roads and recorded their reactions.

  • Watch Tesla's super-fast Model S modes square off in a drag race

When Tesla introduced its extra-fast Ludicrous Mode for the Model S, it also raised a big question: is that acceleration advantage over the already-quick Insane Mode actually meaningful? Thankfully, some owners were willing to find out. DragTimes has posted a drag race between a Model S P85D (using Insane Mode) and a P90D (using Ludicrous) to see how much that added performance really matters. And the answer is "quite a lot" -- as you'll see in the clip below, the P90D pulls ahead quickly and leaves the P85D firmly in the dust. Who'd have thought that the P85D would suddenly seem pokey? You'd expect this kind of lead when it costs at least $5,000 extra to get the Ludicrous setting, but it's still good to have evidence that you're getting more than just a spec bump.
