  • Luigi edition Nintendo 3DS LL gives Mario's brother his due, but only in Japan

There must be some kind of unstated rule that Nintendo can never give the US a special edition handheld without releasing some Japan-focused models. While the company was busy promising Americans an Animal Crossing 3DS XL of their very own, it was also introducing a Luigi edition 3DS LL for its home country as part of its "Year of Luigi" theme -- not fair, Nintendo. The system is decked out in a camouflage-like pattern that pays tribute to Mario's oft-neglected sibling, and it should ship with a preloaded copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team just to drive the point home. Local gamers will get the distinctly-patterned 3DS LL on June 18th, but there's no word on an XL equivalent for the US so far. We'll just have to make do with Mario-colored devices instead.

Nintendo has collaborated with iam8bit to produce a real-life replica of Luigi's supernatural sucker, the Poltergeist 5000 vacuum seen in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The making-of video above shows the vacuum itself is functional, with a gutted vacuum motor housed within custom parts at its core.iam8bit is a gaming art and exhibition company, with recent exhibitions highlighting the Street Fighter series and its American Icons series.

  • Man uses Tetris to create Luigi, awe

At Joystiq, we're firm believers in the idea that every human being has an instrument to which they are naturally attuned, for self expression and emotional release. In most cases, a person's instrument is a literal instrument; Steve Vai and Regina Carter come to mind as ready examples. Sometimes, however, a person's instrument can be a little more abstract. Shuey187, for instance, is a Tetris virtuoso. As a follow-up to the 90 minute magnum opus in which he used Tetris to create a Mario sprite, Shuey187 has utilized his unique gift for geometrically aligning blocks in order to craft Mario's brother and confidant. It's a truly amazing thing to watch, especially when you consider the fact that he used nothing more than a sprite pattern and raw talent to get the job done. Seeing as the video has no soundtrack, we suggest opening a second window and listening to one of the other two phenomena we mentioned.

Nintendo's Wii Games competition has officially begun. All this weekend, NY/NJ residents can visit Liberty State Park to partake in the tournament, and get free swag -- including custom-designed t-shirts. To celebrate the launch of the nationwide event, Nintendo threw a parade, and started the games by sponsoring a heated match between the Mario brothers ... in a game of Wii Fit Plus Hula-Hoop. While the games showcased at the event were mostly comprised of Nintendo's fitness titles, there were a few hidden surprises, including the NES Super Mario Bros. 3 and WiiWare's World of Goo. With free games (and free AC!), the competition is certainly worth checking out, especially if it manages to make its way to your area.%Gallery-97635%

  • Super fan-made paper Mario and Luigi

It's our sincere hope that if the Super Mario Bros. ever actually did show up in our world, they wouldn't look anything like Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo -- instead, we'd really prefer they look something like what you see above: Two papercraft statues put together by DeviantArt-ist TouchFuzzyGetDizzy. Definitely click the Source link below to see these guys as big as possible. The actual statues are 40 and 50 centimeters tall, and with the detail on them, you're probably looking at quite a bit of paper. If you want to try cutting, folding, and pasting them together yourself, you're welcome to -- the creator has uploaded patterns of each, though he warns that there are no instructions to go along with them yet. Elsewhere in his gallery, you can see more angles of Luigi, as well as models of Aryll and Salvatore from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Very cool. The best thing we ever made with paper? The football from ... er ... Tecmo Bowl.

  • New Super Mario Galaxy 2 media is all about Luigi

In the run up to Super Mario Galaxy 2's big launch later this month, Nintendo has been releasing a steady stream of nostalgia-caked media on the game. And while we don't tell you about each and every one (there's a handful of trailers right here, for instance), we do try and point out the ones that are particularly enticing. For instance, today's trailer features the once-again-playable Luigi as he gets in on some Power Star collecting action himself. It's not clear whether the other Mr. Mario is playable from the get-go -- in the first Super Mario Galaxy, Luigi only became playable after collecting all 120 stars -- but he will clearly be a character that players can control. See Mario's partner in time don an adorable bee suit in the gallery below and check out the new trailer just above. %Gallery-92369%

  • Men dressed as Mario and Luigi rob a cab driver

While it's unbelievably tempting to litter this piece with allusions to the various Mario and Luigi properties, we're instead going to bite our tongues and tell the story of some less-than-gentlemanly gents who beat and robbed a NYC cabbie at 4AM on November 1. According to police reports, the cabbie stopped his car at a gas station when one of the four patrons attempted to steal money out of his pocket. He asked the men to pay their fare and get out, which resulted in the attack. In the video found on the NY Daily News website, two men dressed as Mario and Luigi can be seen assaulting the cab driver while another person in their party stands about, presumably watching for interference. The men are still at large and police are asking those with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto NYPD Crime Stoppers, or text 274637 then enter "TIP577." • Tiny Wiimote "projector" is not nearly as impressive as it sounds on paper

This image is not necessarily one we are thrilled about having projected upon our walls, but we are pretty fond of anything in miniature. This 2.25-inch Wiimote is actually a semi-ingenious mini-projector which projects an image (yes, only one) from Super Mario Kart when its button is pressed. When you order you'll get a random choice of one of the six possible images, each less exciting and more pointless than the next. They're available from ThinkGeek now for $6, which is maybe worth the roughly one minute of amusement you (or your cat) will get out of the thing.[Via Wired]

After seeing Snake, Raiden and Kratos in Soul Calibur IV's Character Creation mode, we knew it was inevitable other fan favorites would soon arrive as well. As you can see above, two very famous plumbers were painstakingly recreated for your viewing pleasure. This site managed to collect even more craziness, with everyone ranging from Dante of Devil May Cry, The Bride of Kill Bill, Nappa & General Tao of Dragon Ball, Golbez of Final Fantasy IV, Cammy of Street Fighter and last but certainly not least, Gundam. Admittedly, we are a little scared by that last one. See who else you can recognize here.[Via Kotaku]

  • Wii Warm Up: Mario or Luigi?

We're going to make this one simple. Which Italian plumber brother do you prefer: Mario, or Luigi? We think that Luigi is infinitely more likable, in all his goofball glory. On the other hand, he is more of a "damsel" in distress type that Mario has to constantly bail out of trouble. Even so, we're going to go with the man in green. What about you? And more importantly, why?

Whether you're a fan of the movie, the novel, or just a certain scene re-enacted by cats, Hunter S. Thompson's Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is one unique experience. Now, some person has gone and whipped up some great fanart, combining Hunter's world of drugs with none other than Nintendo's plumbers, the Mario brothers. It's not the greatest piece of art in the world, but it certainly brought a smile to our face when we looked upon it for the first time.[Via Kotaku]

Next time an opportunity arises, however, we plan to share our tub with one of these Super Mario Brothers Bath Bombs.Available at ThinkGeek for $5.99, these release a yellowish, fragrant foam into your bath, before dissolving to leave you with a cute Mario, Luigi, Fire Mario, Bowser Jr., Goomba, or Power Mushroom figurine. When Japan-based 4cr staffer and elementary school teacher Vinnk tried using the Mario universe to teach his young students the English words for family members, he can't have been expecting a lesson of his own on the Mario family tree from a classroom of six-year-olds.That's exactly what he did get however, with his pupils patiently pointing out that Wario, Mario, Luigi, and Peach were all siblings, that Bowser is either their father or uncle, and that Luigi must be older than Mario because he's taller. We're still no clearer on what Yoshi's role is in this incestuous mess, and it's not something we wish to dwell on for longer than is necessary.Anyway, for the full hilarious/adorable transcript of this exchange, hit the "Read" link below. It made our morning.

Spoiler alert: Video shows every playable Brawl character Serving the fans out there who're determined to watch every bit of Super Smash Bros. Brawl code executed before the game ever hits the US, Youtuber Zero9teen has posted a video collection of nearly every jeer from all the characters in the game. We say "nearly" because there are a few secret taunts, like the Japanese-heavy Lylat Cruise chats, that still need to be found and added to this compilation. Luigi pretty much steals the show (08:15), but the rest of the video is worth watching for Zero Suit Samus's plasma whip tricks (01:45) and Yoshi's cute antics (04:35)![Via NeoGAF]

  • Show and Tell: About a bag

We recently brought up the never-ending case discussion again, because, like so many of our readers, we just can't find that perfect bag that really reflects how we feel about the DS. That's why we love it when readers let us know they've taken matters into their own hands. We like to live vicariously through the crafters among us, because they design the most awesome things -- like these themed DS bags.Reader Pamela made a bitchin' Peach bag for herself, complete with loads of zippers and pockets, and an extra bag for, well, extras (like her phone). To complete the look, she got Peach accessories for her handheld, and the result is pinkariffic. In fact, the bag was such a success that she ended up making one for her brother, and another for her brother's friend ... and they're all hand sewn. Yeah, we're jealous. So what have you done lately? From crafts to cakes to collections ... whatever you've got, if it has a little Nintendo flavor, we want to see it. Just take some pictures (or copy your web album links) and send them to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. We'll take care of the rest.
