  • Capcom to sell intentionally awful Mega Man 9 shirts

In keeping with the retro-y spirit of Mega Man 9, Capcom decided to commission I Am 8-bit artist Gerald de Jesus to create the most awful faux box art possible for the game. Capcom then put it on T-shirts for its staff to wear at E3. The idea was to mimic the atrocious cover of the original Mega Man for NES (widely considered to be the worst box art of all time) and it worked. Really well. Capcom's head PR honcho, Chris Kramer, has updated the company's blog with word that the exceedingly kitsch shirts will actually be re-printed for sale to the masses, although exactly when and where we can expect to snap one up is still being ironed on out.

Remember that Mega Man 9 boxart/shirt we featured last week during E3? Of course you do, how could you ever forget its magnificent image? Apparently, I Am 8-bit artist Gerald de Jesus was commissioned for the homage to Mega Man's packaging designs of yore. The shirts were originally created exclusively for Capcom's staff, including director Hironobu Takeshita and producer Keiji Inafune, with a limited run of four. But after seeing fan reactions to the astounding apparel, the publisher has decided to make t-shirts with the Mega Man 9 cover art "available for purchase soon" in the States. Oh, wondrous day!Let's all hope Capcom decides to make a lot more than just four shirts this time!%Gallery-26790%

You know what the best thing about hanging out with JC is? Hearing him gush about Mega Man 9 and how he got a ton of time to play it. It's kind of the same thing with me and Wario Land: Shake It!, I assume. But, what's important is the question we have to ask.So, in thinking about what other retro dream sequels we could see on WiiWare (Earthworm Jim 3, for example), we'd like to know what you all can come up with. So, let's hear it! What retro dream sequel would you like to see?

In the second year of the newly revamped show, Nintendo released a few much-desired games, as well as a pair of incredible peripherals, and yet, there seemed to be something missing. Much of the show's excitement came from third parties (on my Nintendo Wii?), and some found Nintendo's announcements disappointing. Whatever your reaction, we're sure we can all agree on one thing: there was a ton of news and a flood of media. Luckily, you can revisit it all right here (even the week's most outrageous story, which wasn't even from E3).We've listed a few of the show's highlights below, but for the full index of all our 2008 E3 coverage, hit the break. We still have a few items rolling in, and we'll be updating the index as that happens. Check back with us over the next few days by clicking the E3 sidebar graphic. A new Pikmin sprouts! Ultrasound graphics synthesis! 8-bit fidelity engine! We have always been of the opinion that even downloadable games should have boxart. Capcom agreed, putting together this mix of the original Mega Man game's North American packaging and Mega Man 2's PAL cover. The resulting Mega Man 9 art showed up at the publisher's E3 booth on what looked like an iron-on transfer shirt.Unfortunately, only a few of the shirts were made for internal staff, and Capcom doesn't intend to give any away. At least we have this photo (taken by 1UP's Jeremy Parish)! Check out that huge M on his belt!

If JC's glowing Mega Man 9 impressions didn't get your heart pumping, we can only assume that you have no heart. (You might want to go and get that checked out.) As for the rest of us, who sit here clamoring for more Mega Man 9 -- ask, and you shall receive. The video up top shows the opening for this WiiWare title, filled with Dr. Wily trickery. The story is completely cheesy in a "that's just how it was back then" way, making the game even more spot-on oldschool. (Also, take note of the Chun-Li lookalike. We love you, Capcom!)After the break, you can check out some gameplay action and see all those disappearing blocks that JC mentioned. GameTrailers also talked a bit with Capcom developers to squeeze out a few more details on the title, so it's worth checking out. Just click on the blue link below and you'll see what we mean.

While Capcom's press conference was going on elsewhere in the LA Convention Center, their meeting room harbored a poor, neglected Mega Man 9 station. Due to the unique situation, I was able to stand and play Mega Man 9 for a good 20 to 25 minutes. The demo was limited to two levels, which weren't named. Judging from the bosses' appearance in their intros (which are straight out of Mega Man 2), I played Plug Man's stage and Concrete Man's. Concrete Man looks almost exactly like Guts Man from Mega Man. Whoever they were, they had some damned hard stages.First I should talk about the presentation. It looks just like an NES game in motion. It is exactly like a new Virtual Console game appeared out of an alternate history. The look is clean and colorful. It's the real thing. And the music comes straight out of classic Mega Man compositions. The stage intro music is the classic Mega Man 2 tune, and the rest of the music I heard was original compositions in the style of the series. The only hint of newness was found in the control explanation sheet -- the minus button will eventually go to the "Challenge List," a feature that wasn't yet revealed.

"Classic Mega Man is back!" So begins this debut trailer for Mega Man 9. Finally confirmed last week to be coming to the PSN, the latest Mega Man adventure reverts back to NES-era graphics. Everything looks as they should, 8-bit goodness and all. Even Rush is back! Keeping up with the times though, employer and criminal mastermind Dr. Wily has hired his first female robot employee, Splash Woman. You can see her outline at the 37-second mark. [Thanks, Kristopher G.!]

The Blue Bomber's retro-styled return to gaming was originally announced for release on WiiWare. Rumors of a potential PSN version spread through the internet ... and now IGN has confirmed that the brand new 2D shooter will be gracing the PS3. The Wii version is priced at 1000 Points ($10), and we're expecting it will be the same on PSN. Now, all we have to do is wait for a release date. [Via Joystiq]

IGN has an info twofer, with a new trailer for Mega Man 9 and confirmation that the WiiWare game will make its way to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network (wow, the difference a week makes). There's no word yet on price for any of the consoles, but -- if Japan is any indication -- the Wii version should be $10.Check out the trailer after the break already, which is much better than the first footage we saw earlier this week.[Thanks SoulBlade]

When a game's intro starts with the text "IT IS THE YEAR 20XX," you just know that something special is going to follow. Something special and robotty. This English trailer for Mega Man 9 starts with the evolution (and now devolution) of the Mega Man sprite and then launches into glorious footage of the new game. We admit to being moved by the beauty of the intro scene. We're not robots. (We just wish we were.)It really does look just like a really high-quality NES game, with all the parts we love (big pixels, bright colors) and none of the stuff we could do without (flicker, LJN logos). It sounds like one too! We're just going to leave the video playing over and over again in the background. But what's this? The end of the trailer features Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network logos in addition to WiiWare! Good for them. It would be sad to miss out on Mega Man 9 just because you like Halo or whatever.

HA! HA HA! We knew it. Capcom cannot resist its money. We knew they couldn't resist the urge to suck dry the wallets of nostalgic gamers on every console download service. The announcement was revealed via IGN, and since the Wii version will be 1000 points we think we're safe in making a prediction of an 800 MSpoint price for the game (both are $10). Also, take this for what you will, but we also hear that Mega Man 9 is going to have DLC to go along with it too.

Japanese gaming information purveyor Famitsu writes that Mega Man 9 is priced at 1000 Wii Points. We're currently unaware of any WiiWare title changing prices across the Pacific, so the newest adventure of the Blue Bomber could hit our shores for $10. But ... there's a possible catch.Wii Fanboy tells us that both Nintendo Power and Famitsu now allude to some kind of DLC for the game. If it's anything like the Final Fantasy: My Life as a King DLC we're not going to fret; however, if it's $10 for the first three bosses and five bucks for every boss after that -- expect a full blown nutter.[Via Wii Fanboy]

Do you want to know everything there is to know about Mega Man 9, or, uh, Neopets? If so, it's time to send hugs and kisses to Capcom. The company officially announced what it's showing at E3, and, guess what? Those titles made the cut. Now you have more reason than ever to try and get on Capcom's invite list. For Wii owners, the Capcom Belle of the Ball is definitely going to be (a playable) Mega Man 9, a game that we just can't shut up about. Those of you who aren't impressed by the awesomely retro, 8-bit goodness might just come away from E3 feeling better about the project (/hypnotic stare). The rest of us who are already in love can commence happy dancing, as we wonder what Mega Mannish goodies will come out of the convention.Oh, and Neopets! Can we get a woot? ... No? Okay, well, we tried.

How much would you pay for a brand-new Mega Man game? Chances are, unless you hate Mega Man games, or an adorable blue-suited robo-boy busted your jaw when you were in fifth grade, 1000 Wii Points is a fraction of what you would consider a fair price. According to Famitsu, that's the price point for Capcom's new miracle, Mega Man 9. We were actually expecting more for a sequel to a high-profile series like that. And we'll end up paying more: like Nintendo Power, Famitsu alluded to downloadable content in its latest writeup. There is no information at all except that it's planned, so all we can do is speculate about the possible DLC: weapons, levels, enemies, costumes -- who knows? It'll drive the price way up, and we'll happily shell out all our Zenny for it.

  • Parish: 'Mega Man 9 may save video games'

    by

    07.07.2008

When someone leads off an article like that, it's hard not to highlight it. 1up's Jeremy Parish thinks Mega Man 9 is a great idea, but not just because it looks neat, and not because of nostalgia. In his estimation, the return to the style of Mans 1-6 signals an admission on Capcom's part that NES-era technology suits the series best in gameplay terms. Mega Man X and other spinoffs worked well on other systems, but Mega Man is best on NES. "The inescapable truth is that Mega Man, at least the incarnation represented by a plucky little Astro Boy knock-off fighting googly-eyed robo-critters, works best as an 8-bit game."He admits at one point that the 8-bit design could simply be an appeal to nostalgia or a budget-saving tactic, but it's a lot more fun to believe that Inafune et al. are doing what they're doing for an artistic reason. Even the ugliest Wii games are attempts to represent games in a "modern" way -- generally the best 3D that the budget will allow. While No More Heroes uses 8-bit elements for flair, the idea of intentionally regressing, of making a game look "worse" than the technology will allow in the interest of gameplay, seems bold and clever. Of course, some people happen to think the style of NES Mega Man games is every bit as attractive as any modern game on its own merits.

  • Top 5: Anticipated WiiWare Games

Every Monday, Wii Fanboy brings you the Top 5. Inspired by sages such as David Letterman and John Cusack, the Top 5 will give us a chance to share our opinions on the numerous facets of a vast video game culture. And after all, who doesn't like reading these kinds of lists (and then bitching about them afterwards)? So jump right in, agree or disagree, and maybe leave a comment with your own personal Top 5. The first batch of WiiWare was released awhile ago, and there have been high-profile releases, as well as a few future cult-classics. Despite the plentiful start, there are still many more titles on the horizon. Here's a look at what we are anticipating the most. 5. Bomberman - Since 1983, not much has changed in the Bomberman universe. This has its pros and cons. It's good because the basic Bomberman formula is not one that needs tinkering with. It's bad because, well, it's a little ridiculous to shell out full retail price for the same game generation after generation. Then along comes Bomberman for WiiWare. Nintendo's downloadable service is the perfect platform for a game such as this. With online multiplayer for 2 - 8 players, this release should be everything we need out of Bomberman: simple, classic gameplay for a reasonable price. The reduced cost should be wonderful news for wallets that were unfortunate enough to weather Bomberman, Super Bomberman, Bomberman 64, and Bomberman Generation.

We know that Mega Man 9 is all-new and stuff, but after seeing a quick video of its gameplay (found after the break), we're compelled to dig up our copy of Mega Man Anniversary Collection for a nostalgia fix this evening. GoNintendo discovered the first footage, which definitely has the look and sound of a classic Mega Man game from the '80s (minus slowdown and flicker). Details on the Blue Bomber's return are slowly starting to emerge, but we're hoping to learn a lot more about this WiiWare title soon.
