The Metal Gear Solid level pack for LittleBigPlanet we told you about yesterday? It's more than just eye candy; it introduces a new gameplay mechanic.Specifically, your SackBoys (and girls) will be able to battle enemies (and each other) using paintball guns. There are even Trophies encouraging such harmless behavior among the 11 the pack will add to the game. Another Trophy: Rexecutioner. Yes, you will be able to take on an LBP-ized version of Metal Gear REX. Sony, would you kindly announce a US date?

  • Kojima calls Metal Gear Solid Touch a 'simple MGS' shooter

Both 1UP and IGN have poked and prodded new details out of Japanese mag Famitsu's recent Metal Gear Solid Touch reveal, lifting the touchable curtains somewhat off Konami's upcoming head scratcher. According to the article, the game will be based on MGS4, with Metal Gear mastermind Kojima describing the iPhone app as a "Simple MGS." Translation: It's a shooter. In fact, Metal Gear's emphasis on stealth is being pocketed this time around in favor of something that is easier to pick up and play on the go, with much of the gameplay involving sliding and pinching the screen in typical iPhone fashion to move Snake's view and zoom in and out of targets. Additionally, shooting bad guys and exploding barrels is taken care of by tapping directly on the screen. We remain interested, albeit confused, about Snake's latest mission. But the weathered soldier isn't getting any younger, and with all of these fingers in the way, we wonder if he'll be able to see anything at all.Read – Kojima Goes In-Depth on Metal Gear Solid TouchRead – Metal Gear Solid Touch Detailed

Old soldiers never die; they just become LittleBigPlanet costumes. Revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2008, the Old Snake SackBoy costume is a step closer to your PS3's HDD – and it's not on a solo mission.Sony's Hong Kong PlayStation site now lists a Metal Gear Solid costume pack for LBP along with a level pack. Old Snake, Meryl, and Screaming Mantis are available separately; buy the set, and Sony throws in Raiden (MGS4 version). There are no details on the level pack contents, so, as LBP so wonderfully encourages, we'll have to use our imagination. Better yet, what would you like (or expect) it to include? No date for the packs Stateside just yet, but it would make us awfully merry if Sony could sneak this into next Thursday's PSN Store update.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Metal Gear Solid theme unused in MGS4 due to plagiarism claims

    by

    12.12.2008

Why wasn't the iconic Metal Gear Solid theme used in Metal Gear Solid 4? Because, as Gamasutra reports, EGM learned in an interview with series composer Norihiko Hibino that unnamed Russian composers claimed Konami "stole their music."A video posted on YouTube (viewable here) shows series creator, Hideo Kojima, being presented with a recording of Georgy Sviridov's "Pushkin's Garland," a 1979 classical work which contains a similar-sounding passage. The MGS theme was first heard in the original PlayStation game, circa 1995 1998. It was written by Konami's Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase, and has subsequently been reworked and remixed, most notably by film composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who scored MGS2-4. Speaking to EGM, Hibino flatly denies that the MGS theme was "stolen," but admits that "Konami was too sensitive about the situation and just decided not to use that music in the game."

  • Metal Gear Solid 4, Crisis Core receive Gold PlayStation Awards

Those would be "Gold" awards in Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's annual PlayStation Awards, not actual gold PlayStations. No, we think excellent sales are reward enough to render the composition of a congratulatory gong irrelevant -- the Gold award only goes to those games that sold over 500,000 copies in Japan over the last year. This year's PlayStation recipients: Senior citizen stealth sim Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots; pointy-haired sword swinger Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII; and Sega's Phantasy Star Portable, which we failed to include in the headline. Similarly snubbed but given a fancy "Platinum" award was Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold over two million copies and completely messed up our Japanese hardware sales charts. Those of you still keen on Metal Gear Online's multiplayer scene take note: The MEME expansion pack will officially careen onto servers on Nov. 25 (pre-order it on Nov. 18, if you wish), priced at a not-too-obscene $9.99. It'll also be bundled with the previous GENE pack for $14.99, ideal for players still lean on downloadable content for Hideo Kojima's epic most Byzantine.Joining the battlefield (as seen in three new maps) are Mei Ling and perpetual source of mean, Liquid Ocelot. We look forward to shooting him in the, uh ... spleen? What a stupid, stupid post.

  • Custom Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 back on eBay

A few moment's hesitation prevent you from placing the winning bid on that sweet, customized Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 a few weeks back? It's okay, we've all been there -- sitting at the screen, cursor hovering over the "Bid Now" button, wracked with indecision, finally saying "Why not?" just as the timer hits 0. Usually that's cause for a lifetime of bitter regret, but this time you're in luck. The winning bid of $17,000 turned out to be bogus, so the creators have placed the machine on eBay again, ready for you to ponder anew. Now, before you make some snide remarks about $17k being way too much for a tarted up PS3, take a look at the attention to detail here, and remember that 15 percent of the proceeds are going straight to the Child's Play charity -- a factor that should hopefully reduce the vehemence of those remarks by roughly a fifth.

Snake is still getting the job done, with Metal Gear Solid 4 publisher Konami forecasting an optimistic increase in profits, largely thanks to the senior stealth citizen's shenanigans. The company expects its financial results for the first-half fiscal year (due next week) to show an 88% rise in profits to 11.8 billion yen, with revenues increasing 9.8% to 146.9 billion yen. Now, if only there was some way to sell Metal Gear Solid 4 to more people.

CheapAssGamer posted last week that the "Gun Metal Gray" MGS4 PS3 bundle, previously only available through Konami for $600 (plus shipping charges), was now available to pre-order from Amazon.com for $450. We were going to post it at the time, but we got distracted by some Mei Ling fan fiction, which is all for the best now, considering Amazon has reduced the price of the bundle to $400.The bundle will release on Nov. 4 and patience will reward those consumers who waited a half year with a $200+ savings on the 40GB PS3 package.

So, you think naming your kid Nicholai Stephanovich Sokolov Smith is enough to prove that you're the biggest Metal Gear Solid fan? Well, in the immortal words of Michael Jackson, if you don't own the above custom PS3, then you ain't bad. In fact, you ain't nothin'.The system, which includes a backlit logo and the signatures of Hideo Kojima and Yumi Kikuchi, can be yours along with a few other MGS collectibles for the low, low price of ... well, whatever the high bid ends up being on eBay. It's currently a bargain at $7,100....You know, you could probably prove you're the world's biggest Syphon Filter fan for a lot cheaper than that. Just saying.[Via PS3F]

Here we go, for the umpteenth time: A quote published by Japanese investment research firm Morningstar that Konami was "actively looking" to bring MGS4 to Xbox 360 has now disappeared from the record. This comes to light on the same day that Microsoft's Software and Services VP John Schappert said that the Xbox 360 could run the game.GameCyte details that the Kabushiki business journal, which is owned by Morningstar, now quotes a different Konami rep. and completely ignores the topic. The company is calling the new article a "second appearance" rather than a correction.[Via GameCyte]

Thanks to a recent comment made by Konami, the "Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360" rumor mill has once again begun to spin or grind or whatever it is that a mill does. We've never actually seen one. One of the main points of argument against a potential port of Hideo Kojima's senior citizen sneak-em-up has always been steeped in the technical capabilities of the Xbox 360, versus that of the PlayStation 3. While Microsoft's ability to run MGS is currently in question, Software and Services VP John Schappert tells MCV that there's no doubt about the manufacturer's power to run MGS4. "I can't speak on behalf of Konami, but I can shed more light on the fact that we definitely have the power to run MGS4," he said.We could take your word for it, John, but we wouldn't be a snarky video game blog if we didn't wonder if players had the power to run in-between the couch and the disc tray every few hours. That there is what we call a "world without compression" joke.

And here you thought we'd escaped TGS without this rumorang whizzing by again. Oh no, we most certainly did not (duck!). "We're actively looking into a [Metal Gear Solid 4] release for the Xbox 360," a Konami rep told Japanese investment research firm Morningstar for a TGS report published today (in Japanese). Feel free to take that as "no duh" or a renewed glimmer of hope -- Morningstar's report does not include further evidence that Konami is any closer to bringing a MGS4 port to Xbox 360 than when the rumor first appeared ... two years ago!As IGN notes, the key dilemma is in the discs. How to transfer all that optimized Blu-ray data? And, where to put it? [Via IGN; thanks Joe!]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playstation/Sony_announces_Old_Snake_and_Sephiroth_LBP_costumes'; Sony has announced that two new LittleBigPlanet costumes will be made available for download in the future. Metal Gear Solid's Old Snake and Final Fantasy VII's Sephiroth have been stripped and their clothes donated to the LittleBigPlanet thrift store.Unfortunately, there's no word on when they will be made available, or whether they'll be paid-for content. There's also no definite answer to whether they'll be available outside of Japan but, considering both games have large fanbases in the US and Europe, we'd be surprised if they didn't. • Rumor: MGS4's Ryan Payton directing new Halo project

Is Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton directing Peter Jackson's Halo project? "Yes," comes the reply from Shacknews, corroborating (thanks, "reliable source!") a Kotaku rumor that places Payton in the "creative director" role on the forthcoming and exceedingly nebulous Halo project from Microsoft and the Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. If true, it would mark the second major franchise to be touched by Payton, who left Kojima Productions earlier this year. We've reached out to him for comment -- and for the privilege of touching someone who's a tag on our website.

Shortly before leaving Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton had a chat with 1UP, discussing the many highlights of working on one of the year's biggest blockbusters. As is often the case with this line of work, Payton was privy to several elaborate death threats. "When word hit that I chose Pat Zimmerman for Liquid Ocelot -- and not Cam Clarke -- I got dozens of hateful messages from fans including a 2,000 word short story depicting my execution."Payton also expressed a belief that the development team did a sterling job with untangling Metal Gear Solid's twisted story -- with minimal plot fudging. "The stories of MGS2 and MGS3 were truly written without any backup measures if the series continued, leaving dozens of confusing and unexplained plot elements in the wake," he said." The fact that we were able to tie up all the loose ends with MGS4 was nothing short of a miracle." Miraculous acts happen to include the amazing gender bending of not only Olga's child, but MGS1's briefly mentioned Dr. Clark. In Snake's world, anything goes.

Hideo Kojima wishes that the inquiries about a Metal Gear Solid 4 port for Xbox 360 would cease. The man who the La-li-lu-le-lo answer to tells Eurogamer he longs for the day that he stops being asked the notorious question during every interview and public appearance. Ironically, Eurogamer goes ahead and asks him about the possibility of an Xbox 360 port.Kojima reiterates for the umpteenth time that MGS4 was optimized for the PS3 and a port may not be possible. He expresses, in what we're taking as a moment of frustration and spite, that he feels MGS4 should be on PC just so people stop focusing on consoles and start asking him more questions about the game itself.

He's not quite the big name that Hideo Kojima is, but the fact is that if you liked Metal Gear Solid 4, especially how its gameplay had evolved since the last entry in the series, producer Ryan Payton is a big part of the reason. Now, Payton has left the team to spend more time with his family in North America after, he says, receiving some "pretty heavy news concerning my mom."We knew the guy was good at making games, but it turns out he's also got a heart as big as all outdoors. Let's hope he ends up somewhere nice.(P.S.: Metal Gear Solid 5 will be completely inscrutable, with Reagan-era gameplay. Confirmed.)

It appears that the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle has finally been done in by the La-li-lu-le-lo. Our trusted Wal-Mart operative -- who has yet to fail us on a mission -- informs us the status of the bundle within the megacorp's computer is now "deleted." S/he tells us this means that there are no plans to receive any more shipments. We've contacted Sony for official word regarding any plans to restock the model. We always knew the $499 bundle was a limited edition, so this isn't exactly a "!". What we are wondering: Will the model in the bundle be repackaged with a new game? Is this the end of PS3s with any type of PS2 backwards compatibility?%Gallery-30040%

It started out as a tantalizing April Fools gag, and then evolved into a grueling Metal Gear Solid 4 unlockable. Wanna play as Snake dressed up as the 12th century assassin? Sure thing. Just earn the Assassin's Emblem: Beat the game with 50 or more knife kills, 50 or more CQC holds, and 25 or less alerts. That's the honorable way to do it, at least. But what if we told you there was an infinitely easier way to drape the cloak of the Assassins Order over your Old Snake? Would you risk being shamed by your peers? Would you utter the magic word...?
