This week's edition of Microsoft's rolling Deals With Gold promotion is aimed at variety. From the bleak gloom of post-apocalyptic Moscow to Pixar's sunny vision of a child's bedroom, the sale has something for everyone. On the gloomy side of things, both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are now available for the Xbox One at $16.74 a piece. Those wishing to see the entire dark saga can purchase the likewise discounted $33.16 Metro Redux Bundle which includes both remastered shooters in a single package. Games based on Disney properties form the core of the Xbox 360 discounts. More than a dozen games, ranging from rebuilt platforming classics like Castle of Illusion to movie tie-ins like Cars, are available at half price. The Saints Row 4 Season Pass is also half off, but even more importantly, Saints Row 4 itself has received a 70 percent discount to a price of $10.49. The next game from Metro 2033 developer 4A Games will shift away from a linear progression and offer players a more freeform approach to gameplay, studio CTO Oles Shishkovstov told Eurogamer this week. "For the game we are working on now, our designers have shifted to a more sand-box-style experience - less linear but still hugely story-driven," Shishkovstov said. "I will not go into details, but it requires some work from programmers as well. Also, we are improving graphics in very different aspects, like recently we did a physically-based global ambient occlusion (instead of local, like SSAO). I will not talk about PBR (physically-based rendering) here, because here we are at the stage when artists are still adapting their mentality to it." Shishkovstov did not reveal whether the undisclosed project is a new entry in the studio's Metro series. The visually upgraded franchise compilation Metro Redux shipped this week for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms. [Image: 4A Games]

Been above ground so long I hardly knew the place/Gee it's good to be back home/Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my gas mask/Honey disconnect the phone/I'm back in the U.S.S.R metro/You don't know how lucky you are boy/Back in the U.S.S.R. metro There is nothing quite so unsettling as the Xbox controller left bumper button when you're playing Metro Redux. Sneaking over irradiated pools of stagnant water in 2033 Moscow, the left bumper is what you press to wipe grime off your gas mask. One careful wipe might help you see a fallen scavenger ripe with spare ammunition. Another might have your vision obscured just long enough for a giant, mutated pig bear to run up and eat you. Joystiq Streams is diving into Metro Redux, the newly revamped collection of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light from 4A Games, at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. • Metro 'a positive experience' for Deep Silver, will 'absolutely continue'

If you're a fan of the "suffocating despair" found in the Metro series, the good news is you'll be able to buy a ticket back to that world in the future. Today at Gamescom, Deep Silver CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz told Joystiq the company is sticking with the series beyond Metro: Last Light, which it picked up nearly complete for $5.9 million during the THQ asset auction. "It's been a positive experience," he said. "I'm very glad we acquired that brand. While it launched in a very dry space in the gaming calendar this year, it still got a lot of attention. Our ambition is to absolutely continue with that brand and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience." Asked whether broadening the imposing, claustrophobic experience would diminish what fans love or create problems with the license holder, Kundratitz clarified. "It is true with a license you have to be aligned with the license holder. In this case it's [Metro 2033 author] Dmitry Glukhovsky who holds the license and he's a great guy. He enjoys the game, the success of the game and we have a good relationship." Kundratitz continued, "He is a great contributor. Also, going forward, as he has been very positive contributing to the last game – I think he can play an active role for whatever comes in the future." Kundratitz politely emphasized Deep Silver isn't announcing a Metro sequel, but he says the brand is part of the future of Deep Silver, and the company has plans to work with Metro developer 4A Games.

The Humble Deep Silver Bundle recruits Metro 2033, Sacred Citadel and Risen today. These new additions are free for anyone who's already purchased the bundle, while new customers must pay over the average price (currently just shy of $5) for the trio. Calling the Humble Deep Silver bundle successful is perhaps an understatement: It has sold over 340,000 bundles and earned in excess of $1.6 million since its introduction last week. The pay-what-you-want lineup consists of Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition, Saints Row 2, Sacred 2: Gold Edition, Risen 2: Dark Waters and Saints Row: The Third and all its Full Package DLC. Paying more than $25 also secures a copy of Dead Island: Riptide. The Humble Deep Silver Bundle has little less than a week to go before closing its virtual doors. It's also worth noting that these games are provided as Steam codes, so you'll need Valve's digital distribution platform to run them.

Metro: Last Light's title is slightly misleading, since there's really nothing "light" about the game at all, at least according to the latest grim, Bible-quoting trailer. Hey, we never liked being happy anyway.Along with that uplifting video, THQ is offering a free Steam key for Last Light's predecessor, Metro: 2033, to each person who "likes" the Metro Facebook page from December 11 - 16, while supplies last. There's only so much room in the THQ digital vault, after all.

Metro 2033, the post-apocalyptic shooter from 4A Games set in Russia, actually isn't an entirely new concept. The video game is based on a pretty popular book by author Dmitry Glukhovsky. MGM has optioned the rights to the book and is now looking to adapt it into a film. The Hollywood Reporter says MGM snagged the rights and will have rookie writer F. Scott Frazier create a script. Little is known right now outside of Frazier and some production talent's involvement, so creative liberties may be taken. We're crossing our fingers for one scene where the protagonist accidentally uses some scrounged perfect ammo in his gun then gets mad at himself when he realizes its market value.

It's no secret that THQ's Metro 2033 "wasn't properly nurtured," but the game's cult status has translated into over 1.5 million sales since its launch in March 2010 across Xbox 360 and PC."[Metro 2033] released to critical acclaim and disappointing sales. The reality is, back then, THQ didn't market the game and we're very aware of that," said Rich Williams, SVP of Global Marketing at THQ, during an investor meeting this morning. "We're absolutely committed to marketing [Metro: Last Light] appropriately."
