Nintendo fans have been practicing parkour with their very own platforming princess since the 8-bit days. Now it seems another traceuse is stepping in on the territory Samus pioneered. On the surface, it doesn't seem as if Mirror's Edge has very much in common with the Metroid franchise. Yet,the respective series heroines' exploits can be experienced and enjoyed in either first person 3D or 2D sidescrolling viewpoints. Mirror's Edge 2D is currently in the beta stages of development with its destined platforms still unannounced. It hasn't yet got any of the fascist oppressors seen in the 3D version, but they'd only get in the way of the acrobatics that are on impressive display here. Rarely do we get to control such fluid and graceful 2D animation, and it makes the treat all the more delectable when you get to do it with a Wii Remote.

If you still haven't gotten your hands on Mirror's Edge or thoroughly enjoyed the experience, then we advise checking out Brad Borne's flash game Mirror's Edge 2D. That's right, Faith has gone 2D and (in the transition) hasn't lost any of her running moves. This 2D remake (which we're told is developed in partnership with EA) boasts a rather true to life Mirror's Edge feel and includes all of Faith's signature moves including the wall climb, power lift and the ever popular ground slide. This flash Mirror's Edge experience is currently in beta with only the first level playable, but it'll release in (a free) full version form in the next few weeks. Enjoy the 2D running fun.

It's one of the laws of the internet: When a popular game is released, the papercraft is not far behind, whether it's of a luminary like Solid Snake or everyday joes like Gabe and Tycho. Now, Faith of Mirror's Edge fame is getting the wood pulp facial (as no one calls it) courtesy of Robot Martini. As the state has relegated us to only safety scissors, we've never actually put one of these together. But we do like the feeling of superiority we get looking at badasses who've become two-dimensional. Not so tough now, are you, you earthbound carrier pigeon?

click to play Mirror's Edge 2D Here's the thing: A lot of different people read Joystiq. We once met a 142-year-old woman who read Joystiq every morning before heading out to hunt for her meals. Then, there was that 3-month-old infant whose uncanny ability to read the site was only surpassed by his 6-digit gamerscore. What we're saying here is that we've learned to never pigeonhole our audience. And with that lesson in mind, we bring you the following: A Flash version of Mirror's Edge – titled Mirror's Edge 2D (beta), naturally – built by Mr. Fancy Pants Brad Borne himself. We're sharing this with you since we know the info would appeal to several totally distinct groups. Group A: Fans of Mr. Borne's Flash-based indie platformer, Fancy Pants Adventure. Group B: Those of you are interested in anything with the words "Mirror's Edge" on it. Group C: Those of you stuck inside the claustrophobic confines of an office cubicle, reading this on your dimly lit office CRT, yearning to try out some of those moves you learned playing Mirror's Edge last night. Lastly, Group D: Those of you who get simulation sickness and vomit just seeing the words "Mirror's" and "Edge" strung together. Don't worry folks, this is 2D. Like that Flash Portal game. Oh, and sorry about this:Mirror's Edge.%Gallery-36752%

This is really sick. EA has teamed up with Borne Games to create a 2D version of Mirror's Edge. The beta, which is available here, is incredibly well made. The visuals are silky smooth, and the music is taken straight from the game. Even better: the controls work incredibly well, translating Faith's fluid movements into 2D. EA, we think you have a winner here. Why not make this a PSN/PSP game for us to buy?

  • Metareview -- Mirror's Edge (PS3, Xbox 360)

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski

Mirror's Edge may not be perfect, but it's getting bonus points for trying something different and attempting to evolve the very exclusive genre of first-person platformers (Metroid Prime previously being the go-to example). Within the 'stiq network, PS3 Fanboy gave the game an 8/10 and Joystiq has posted its non-numerical verdict. As for platform purchase choice, the PS3 is expected to receive some "exclusive" content, which has yet to be revealed, but beyond that it's a controller preference issue. The game uses both rows of shoulder buttons constantly during gameplay, so having a big button on top is nice on the Sixaxis or DualShock 3, but some may prefer the trigger of the 360 controller. If you're versatile, the whole issue of top or bottom won't matter. CVG (90/100): "Not your average gaming experience - Mirror's Edge takes the FPS format and flips it on its head. A brilliant and unique experience, even if the small shooting parts aren't quite up to scratch." GameSpy (80/100): "The combat's unfortunately its Achilles' heel, since it lacks the spontaneity of the free-running and in many instances brings the action to a crashing halt. Thankfully, after you've beaten the game, the time trials and speed runs reward you for avoiding violent confrontation and emphasize the exhilarating rush of zipping through each gorgeous stage." EuroGamer (80/100): "There's something broken thematically, deep within Mirror's Edge: it tells you a rambling story about freedom even as it confines you to the tight squares of its own personal hopscotch court, and for many that will be one wrong-footing too many. But for those who can shrug off the contradictions and the limitations, ignore the tearing cityscape and lingering qualms about value for money, this will shove you so deeply into the experience of being in someone else's body, and taking it on a terrifying, breakneck joyride, that nothing else will matter." IGN (73/100): "Mirror's Edge is a classic example of some awesome ideas that just didn't pan out the way that was originally intended. The list of moves could be more expansive -- maybe by adding a fourth button to the mix -- and the world feels entirely too constricting for what could be a huge open city. ... I truly hope that a sequel is spawned, but this first attempt falls just a bit short." GameSpot (70/100): "If you can overlook the array of quirks long enough to find your stride, you'll want to check out the beat-your-record races and level speedruns. ... The single-player story is simply a practice run for being a virtual show-off, yet the players repeating these levels, because they'll learn them to perfection, are also the ones likely to see Mirror's Edge at its most thrilling."

So, now that Mirror's Edge is out, what's next for Faith and friends? Well, more Mirror's Edge. DICE and EA have announced DLC for the game will be available early next year, but haven't revealed any more details. A Sony rep said that PS3 would receive some form of exclusive DLC. While added time trial levels seem most likely, perhaps DICE will add extra story chapters that fill in the gaping holes in the swiss cheese-like plot. We certainly wouldn't mind that.Stay tuned for more details.

Before they had even laid hands on Mirror's Edge, a lot of journalists were ready to give EA and DICE the 2008 Brave Choice Award™ for taking the risk of crafting a AAA title in a completely new genre. And let's make no mistake, that's exactly what this is: Bold, fresh game design that feels like nothing you've touched before. But we'd be remiss to forget there's also an act of faith required on the part of you, the player. You have to open yourself up to Mirror's Edge, to avoid playing it like a first-person shooter. You have to trust that if you take the time and the effort to learn this new genre, you'll receive something out of it that you couldn't have found anywhere else. After finishing the 360 version of Mirror's Edge, I'm happy to report that those who can take that leap will find their trust rewarded.%Gallery-17126%

It's very rare to pick up a game and think to yourself "this is the beginning of a new genre." But, that's exactly what Mirror's Edge is. It wasn't too long ago EA and DICE unveiled the game with a stunning gameplay trailer that had us all asking: "is this really possible?" The answer is a resounding "yes."Mirror's Edge has almost everything going for it. The innovative first-person parkour gameplay, meshed with a distinct high-contrast style, makes it look and play unlike anything before it. To think, only a generation ago, we touted Metroid Prime on Gamecube for its ability to successfully present first-person platforming. Mirror's Edge goes even further, offering a system that's far more complex, but at the same time, deceptively intuitive.%Gallery-22498%

Now that Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners are busy practicing their finger parkour with this week's launch of Mirror's Edge, Electronic Arts has confirmed the PC version is coming January 2009 (as was previously listed by online retailers). According to the press release, downloadable content for the title will also be available "at the beginning of the year." No indication whether it's multiplatform DLC or the previously mentioned "exclusive" PS3 content. EA also offers no clues on what the content would be, but we're going to take a leap of faith here and say it won't be a weapons pack. Update: Gamecycte has confirmed that it's "downloadable content for both platforms," according to an EA spokesperson.

Here she is, Faith, jumping, kicking and being all acrobatic in the final Mirror's Edge trailer, the game's official launch trailer. Even better than the fact that the trailer is action filled and "jump-tacular" is the proof that Mirror's Edge has other colors than white, blue and red. No joke, there's green and (GASP!) yellow. Yes sir, we were just as amazed as you probably are right now.Color wheel discussion aside, the trailer is enjoyable and upbeat enough to make us want to run down to our local retailer to plop down our pre-order cash. No joke.

We really wish we could tell you how awesome Mirror's Edge is. Unfortunately, there's an embargo date on the review. So, just take a look at this (the final?) trailer for EA's upcoming first person parkour game. This trailer reveals some of the later levels in the game, and shows off even more of the stunning train tunnel sequence. Sure, this latest (and likely final) trailer for Mirror's Edge is partly a marketing piece ... but it's all excitement. In it we get to gawk at previously unseen locales that architecture protagonist Faith will get to traverse, watch her crotch-kick oppressive government goons, and – what's that? – it almost looks like she's running towards a motorcycle at one point. In its early moments, the trailer shows us what the game might have looked like if EA DICE went with a third-person perspective, rather than presenting the action through the eyes of Faith. We'd be quite surprised if the final game doesn't include a third-person cheat of some sort.

While the demo for Mirror's Edge has been available on the Xbox Live Marketplace since Friday, we know some gamers haven't had a chance to play the demo's unlockable Time Trial Mode. Available when you enter a special code when the game is pre-ordered, the time trial demo allows players to traverse the two sections of the regular demo in a battle of speed against other players online.Once a player completes a run of the levels included in the time trial subsequent runs will pit players against a red ghost of their best previous time for each section of the level. Beat your previous time and that run becomes the new ghost. Quickly you'll learn that it's both fun and frustrating to fight against yourself. Not down with self destruction? Download ghosts from players atop the leaderboard and learn their tricks and time saving tactics. We're not claiming to be experts at Mirror's Edge but hopefully our two level runs will show you a thing or two ... remember, you don't always have to follow the preset path.

According to EA boss John Riccitiello the Mercenaries series will see another installment. During an earnings call, Riccitiello confirmed that Mercenaries will join Dead Space and the upcoming Mirror's Edge as continuing franchises for the mega-publisher along with Will Wright's latest, Spore. Released in late August, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames has sold 1.9 million units across four platforms. Riccitiello made the announcement when asked if EA's recent releases were considered "sequelable" by the publisher -- who has posted a $310 million loss for its second quarter fiscal release. The EA CEO also stated that each of the mentioned titles were not likely to see annual releases. [via Kotaku]
