Do you have any of "those" friends? You know the ones. The ones that still think that video games are exclusively the domain of kindergartners, and anyone who plays them beyond grade school is a mentally stunted weirdo? If so, we suggest heartily that you show them the Mirror's Edge demo that just landed on Marketplace. If they're able to take in the beautiful, visceral visuals and still walk away unimpressed, we suggest you try again. Only the second time, you should play whilst wearing a smoking jacket and sipping on a glass of cognac, preferably while sitting in a wingback leather chair. If that doesn't work ... well, you don't need "those" kinds of friends.

It's time to finally take Mirror's Edge for a test run. The demo is available now on PSN and will make its way onto the XBM tomorrow. Our brief hands-on time with Faith back at E3 showed us the game's concept worked, but now it's time to really put the title through its paces. The PSN also adds the EndWar demo, which is also certainly worth checking out. The full North American update is listed after the break.PS3 Fanboy has the details on this week's European PSN update, which includes the EndWar demo. We wonder if the game's surprisingly responsive voice commands are still top notch with a cracking Welsh accent?

Not a tremendous amount of interesting stuff this week, but the Mirror's Edge demo more than makes up for that. There's also a PS1 game and a whole bunch of overpriced (and belated) Soul Calibur IV DLC. By now you should have that Mirror's Edge demo downloading. At almost a gigabyte, it might take a while, so why not peruse the full list of content contained in this week's update while you wait? To heck with its rumored November 6th release, because EA just announced that the long awaited Mirror's Edge demo will be releasing to the Xbox Live Marketplace this Friday, October 31st (BOO!) Yes sir, come Friday you'll finally get the chance to live out your childhood career dreams and become one badass female messenger. Joy! The Mirror's Edge demo will include the entire prologue, a brief tutorial and a chuck of the game's single player campaign. Additionally, those who pre-ordered the game will be able to use their special code to unlock the demo's time trial mode. Who knows, if the demo turns out to be golden we may demand a trilogy without a need to play the retail version. Yeah ... our hopes are high.%Gallery-17292%[Via Joystiq]

We hope you didn't have anything planned for the next few days, because EA just announced that the Mirror's Edge demo is going live on PlayStation Network tomorrow, Oct. 30, and Xbox Live Marketplace the following day, Oct. 31. If this slice of the game is anything like we've previously played, it won't be very long – but you'll want to keep playing it over and over again. This will be the case even more so if you've pre-ordered the game from Best Buy and received the retailer's exclusive time trial mode unlock code. DICE has set up special demo leaderboards so you can spend between now and the game's release on Nov. 11 vying for the coveted top spot. Remember to look before you leap.

Previously on Mirror's Edge – or, at least, the animated trailer – we got a look at the downfall of the city in which the game takes place. This week: the rise of its protagonist, Faith, as a "runner" begins ... with a training montage (sadly minus frenetic '80s background music).Given that EA already has designs on Mirror's Edge as a trilogy and has partnered with Starz on a Dead Space animated flick, we're frankly surprised we haven't heard anything on a similar treatment for DICE's free-running action title. Wait – did you hear that? That was the sound of an EA exec's pen clicking to action, no doubt signing off on such a deal as we speak.Bonus: Cop the HD version from Big Download.

Continuing EA's exploration of her origins, the latest Mirrors' Edge "Run Story Trailer" shows us how Faith perfected her acrobatic skills and how she learned the ways of the messenger. The Mirror's Edge animated trailer (after the break) also shows us that flashlights are not an effective tool for taking down an enemy from a long range and that Faith isn't able to smile. Ever.

With only a month to go before EA releases its much-anticipated Mirror's Edge, we had a chance to play an updated demo. If you read Jem's PAX impressions, you should know about the basic controls of the game -- and it's amazing that such simple controls allow for such amazing feats of acrobatics. From the moment the controller went into my hands, it was clear exactly what I had to do. The intuitive controls, which largely rely on the four shoulder buttons, make for an engaging experience right from the get-go. However, as with any great platforming game, timing is vital to success -- that was made evident by the game's newly demonstrated Time Attack mode.In this new race mode, players must do just one thing, and one thing well: get through a course as quickly as possible. A fairly linear path still has multiple approaches, and the best times will only be achieved by those truly skilled at the game. I cleared my first time trial rather easily, in over 1:20. Ghost data is then saved, and will appear the next time someone plays the same level.Well, my time was bested by the PR representative. He took advantage of a few shortcuts that I didn't know about. For example, immediately at the beginning of the level, he ran towards the wall, did a kick and jumped on top of a closet. Then, he did another wall jump to go atop of the flight of stairs I had previously just run up. Doing such slick moves shaved a good number of seconds off his time. Wow.%Gallery-22498%

  • DICE planning Mirror's Edge as a trilogy

    10.15.2008

Talking with AusGamers, Mirror's Edge senior producer Owen O'Brien acknowledged EA and DICE's plans to continue the Mirror's Edge franchise and shows interest in developing a level editor for future sequels. "The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," said O'Brien, "there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story." Though, O'Brien makes it very clear that Mirror's Edge, this first installment, will solely focus on Faith and her "experiences in the world." Good times. All said, we don't know if talking trilogy is worthy of excitement or praise, not just yet. We have a demo to try out next month and the game's retail release to play through. Then, if all goes well, we say bring on more messenger bag running sequels.[Via Eurogamer]

  • EA sees a trilogy in Mirror's Edge

With its developer already inking comic book deals and counting the dollars, euros, yen, and copper farthings it expects to rake in from a projected three million copies worldwide, Mirror's Edge staying a one-off affair may have seemed unlikely ... and is now so totally not one. In an interview with AusGamers, DICE senior producer, Owen O'Brien, reveals that the game – launching next month – will be the first in a planned trilogy.O'Brien commented: "The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," adding that, "certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith." Faith being the protagonist of the first (and now, it seems, second) Mirror's Edge – or, you might also say, what EA has in the franchise. O'Brien also mentioned that the second game in the freshly-minted series may pack a level editor, saying: "It's something we're probably going to look at for the sequel." He also said that, "We want to make the level editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is. And that's going to take us quite a lot of time." In other words: the first dose of rooftop running action – complete with its recently revealed time trial mode – will have to keep us happy for a good while. [Via GameSpot]

According to this pre-order page for Mirror's Edge, a demo for the game will be available for download November 6th. • Agile Mirror's Edge achievements revealed

The MGC crew just sent word that all 1000 Gamerscore worth of Mirror's Edge achievements have been revealed and most all are acrobatic in nature. The achievements (viewable after the jump) include the standard mission completion and combat mix, but also include a handful of "Speedrun" and movement string achievements. We can already tell that earning 1000 Gamerscore will not be a given all because of the 80GS "Test of Faith" achievement that is only unlocked once you "complete the game without shooting an enemy." That's asking a lot from fanboys who have spent years and years finely tuning their headshot skills.

According to the Mirror's Edge pre-order page over on Gamestop.com, the long promised Mirror's Edge demo will release to the XBLM on Thursday, November 6th. Which, if true, would be in line with EA releasing a demo prior to the game's retail release on the 11th. So, we say bank on November 6th being the release, because the only reason we're slapping a rumor tag on this is because EA hasn't officially confirmed it yet. We can't wait! [Thanks, thw]

EA has announced their plans to release a Mirror's Edge remix soundtrack alongside the release of the game on November 11th (November 14th for Europe). The soundtrack will be available for download only and includes the Mirror's Edge theme tune, along with five different remixes. You may recognize the name of the song -- "Still Alive" -- but you won't recognize the tune. It's been recorded for Mirror's Edge specially by Swedish pop star Lisa Miskovsky. Not sure whether you fancy it? If you pre-order the game in the US at Best Buy you'll get a CD with the track and one of the remixes. There's no word on a price, but those interested will no doubt be able to find out on iTunes when the soundtrack releases in just over a month. The full track list is as follows: Lisa Miskovsky "Still Alive" – Mirror's Edge Theme Song Benny Benassi "Still Alive" – Remix Junkie XL "Still Alive" – Remix Paul van Dyk "Still Alive" – Remix Teddybears "Still Alive" – Remix Armand Van Helden "Still Alive" – Remix [Via Press Release]

  • Mirror's Edge theme, 'Still Alive,' not Portal's 'Still Alive'

When we received word today about the Mirror's Edge soundtrack – set do be available for digital download upon the game's launch Nov. 11 – something struck us as a bit ... odd. That would be the fact that the theme from the game is titled "Still Alive." You know, like the wonderfully infectious theme of another game: Portal. This song isn't by geek rock legend Jonathan Coulton, however, nor does it feature the vocal stylings of GLaDOS. It is, in fact, by Swedish pop star Lisa Miskovsky, and, while wonderful, sounds nothing like Coulton's tune. It's a case of "same title, different song." Sort of makes us wonder, though, if anyone connected with Mirror's Edge at DICE or EA has, y'know, heard of Portal? After all, EA did distribute the console versions of The Orange Box. Like we said, Miskovsky's "Still Alive" will be released Nov. 11 alongside several remixes of the song by prominent musicians including Paul van Dyk, Junkie XL, Teddybears, Benny Benassi, and Armand Van Helden. Starting this week, those who pre-order Mirror's Edge at Best Buy will receive a CD containing the game's theme and the Benny Benassi remix. Be sure to check out our hands-on impressions of the game's time trial mode posted earlier today.

When EA asked if we'd like to check out the time trial mode of its upcoming first-person action game / parkour simulator, Mirror's Edge, we jumped at the chance to finally play more than the tiny snippet we'd blasted through at E3 and PAX. We hadn't considered that the very nature of the mode would make for an abbreviated experience. In fact, roughly 57 seconds of the game was on display (a little more, a little less, depending on ones skills). The particular level had a best time set by one of the devs from DICE and we played it over and over (and over) again chasing their best time ghost.%Gallery-33857%
