  • Mirror's Edge story trailer gets animated

There are two things that can be concluded from the animated Mirror's Edge trailer above. One, Mirror's Edge sounds like a freaking awesome game. Two, somehow, before everything is said and done, there will be a product tie-in with Esurance. You know, the (arguably annoying) commercials with that pink haired chick what sells the auto insurance? Yeah, those. Anyway, the trailer above is still flippin' sweet and we are totally pumped to see the game for ourselves. To prepare to see the game at E3 next week, we've been running around and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. We live in the suburbs, so it's proving rather difficult.

As we nurse a queezy stomach from playing EA DICE's Parkour-inspired Mirror's Edge, we'll be doing so to a story penned by writer and story designer Rhianna Pratchett, who's known for her work on titles such as Triumph Studios' Overlord and Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword. The story centers on free runner Faith as she jumps, climbs, and tumbles her way to uncovering the truth behind who framed her sister for murder. Notes Pratchett, "Faith is skilled, but she's certainly not a superhero. She has her flaws, like all of us. In short: she's real. That's her appeal." Mirror's Edge remains one of the more interesting original titles in EA's 2008 salvo, and is expected to leave us feeling vertigo when it ships for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this winter.%Gallery-27271%

  • Pre-order Mirror's Edge, and it's in the bag

Mirror's Edge, the upcoming game from EA's DICE studio, is what you'd get if you crossed Johnny Mnemonic with the Kevin Costner epic The Postman and then multiplied it by Portal and divided it by the Y.T. character from Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. You play a Runner named Faith, and she runs information in her faithful little satchel to and fro in a sprawling, futuristic metropolis. If you pre-order the game from GameStop, you can get your mitts on that very same bag. It has seven compartments, comes in eye-blasting yellow, and "fits your PS3, Xbox 360, or laptop for gaming on the run." Not too shabby. If publishers keep putting out things like this and the Fallout 3 Survival Edition, which comes with a replica of the Pip-Boy 3000, then how long until Resident Evil ships with a replica of the T-Virus in a collectible plexiglas case? We'd hit it.

  • Mirror's Edge video interview describes city, couriers

Because we love the style of the game -- from graphics to gameplay, we thought you'd also enjoy this Mirror's Edge video interview. The senior producer for the game, Owen O'Brien, talks a bit about Faith and the construction of the city she gets to run around in. Apparently, the city is very "monitored" and the citizens don't like that. So, they've gone back to the courier system of sending messages to one another. That puts the running in perspective and why you should probably make your way to your client as quickly as possible. It's a pretty excellent interview as it clears up a lot of mysterious bits about the game, so even if you're vaguely interested, check it out!

An interview with Mirror's Edge devs, DICE, has swept onto the internet and we're collecting the information to relay back to you. The title is multiplatform, but was showcased only at the PlayStation Day event. DICE's general manager, Sean Decker, explained it was because Sony has been a great partner and developing on the PS3 gives them a lot of little quirks to work with (Sixaxis balances Faith, Cell helps push higher texture resolutions). This is interesting because Decker goes on to explain how each version of the game (PS3, 360, PC) will be different -- imagine, a developer taking the time to tweak a game to perform optimally on each platform. The developers are aiming for a 720p experience across all platforms, to keep a super-smooth frame rate at all times. There's not going to be any user interface in the game whatsoever other than a dot in the middle of the screen, a "focus point" for players, which will minimize motion sickness for those susceptible to such an ailment. The game isn't about combat, Decker explains, but about movement. Even when you get a weapon, it's more of a tool to get through an obstacle than to take out other people. Any online elements are being kept secret until summer (E3, we presume), along with information on any sort of demo. No release date yet, but that's also going to get discussed this summer. We'll keep looking.

  • Mirror's Edge video gets a slower, more analytical version

This video of Mirror's Edge is the same as the one shown at SCEE's PlayStation Day, except completely different. You get a slow analysis of all the motions, the gameplay elements, and even descriptions of street signs, shoe brands, and the mystery of the game's logo revealed. It's very interesting and has a pretty cool song to go with it. Feels very Digital Devil Saga at times with slow, overdriven guitars, but then again, we're slightly insane. Check out the video -- it makes the game seem that much more interesting!

  • Mirror's Edge team praises tilt controls, Cell architecture

Click for high-resolution image. Sean Decker, general manager of Battlefield developer DICE, spoke to VideoGamer.com about their upcoming Mirror's Edge. The first-person platforming/action game made its debut at PlayStation Day, which led some to believe the title was a PS3-exclusive. It's not, but the team is promising to make the most out of the PS3's unique architecture. For example, the team plans on utilizing tilt controls: "The great thing about it is that there's a lot of little things like, Faith there when she's walking like this (points to Mirror's Edge trailer showing Faith tightrope-walking across a beam), Sixaxis controls, super easy to implement and say, OK well just balance it and then you've got it there, as opposed to teaching a player to say, oh let's push this button or that button.""The other thing is the Cell really allows us to push the resolution of our textures much higher and we've taken full advantage of that as well. So there's a lot of little quirks to it that we really like and our engineers love as well as our designers." However, Decker wouldn't go so far as saying the PS3 version is superior to the Xbox 360 version -- they're simply "different."%Gallery-22498%

click to embiggen Although they have an in-house engine for the Battlefield series (Frostbite), EA DICE has gone with Epic's mega-popular Unreal Engine 3 for the Parkour-inspired Mirror's Edge. According to the development team (via Electronic Arts PR), the reason was that the Mirror's Edge project began early on in Frostbite's development, so they decided to use the more-developed Unreal technology instead.DICE is also developing "a new lighting solution that truly makes Mirror's Edge stand-out visually." And did we already say it's a delicious ball of awesomeness? Because it is. Witness DICE's upcoming and "true" first person experience as main character Faith jumps from building to building, leaps through the air, slides, glides and kicks the crap out of gun wielding baddies with ... her legs. We're excited and truly believe that Mirror's Edge has that special something. Enjoy!

Update: Videos for Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 have been removed at Sony's request. "This was an internal video to show work in progress and was not ready for distribution." We will post new media when it is available. If you were furiously pounding F5 to follow along with PS3 Fanboy's live coverage of PlayStation Day 2008, you probably felt a little pang of sadness as our man, Jem Alexander, got to see some new footage from Mirror's Edge, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 while you had to make do with reading his text second-hand.Now, you can make amends and see the videos directly from the show for yourself. Oh, and you should know that the audio on the Killzone clip seems to become a little crazy at the end, but we're hoping you still get the idea. MTV'S Multiplayer blog recently had the opportunity to ask Owen O'Brien, Senior Producer on Mirror's Edge, a few questions regarding the game development and ideas. The interview offers a good view on the philosophy of the game's development and includes some interesting items, such as the origin of the name, the all-to-real possibility of "simulation sickness" as well as the art direction, including the apparent absence of the color green from all released images. Now, in the interview O'Brien's response to that last bit is particularly telling, as he doesn't confirm that the game has no green ....And as the released concept art seems to suggest, the color green is limited only to certain areas, confirming the very specific art direction mentioned in the interview. There are five newly posted pieces of concept art, and three new screenshots. Look upon them and marvel (but don't forget to read the interview.)%Gallery-17292%[Read, MTV Multiplayer][Read, ene3]

  • Mirror's Edge Screenshots, Impressions

Described as an action-adventure in first-person, Mirror's Edge is the latest game from the developers of the acclaimed Battlefield series that has seen much success on the PC. The devs seem to be moving in a new direction with this latest project, as the focus of the game isn't on the shooting, but rather on the movement, a la Assassin's Creed with . The folks over at 1up got a preview with the game, and it appears well on the way to something different (and hopefully) special. The game's plot is a fairly typical futuristic affair and is in place mainly to have a good reason for the gameplay. The gameplay itself does sound good though, as it's meshes freerunning/parkour with melee style attacks and limited shooting. For now the control scheme is simple, but contextual, the sticks are typical FPS fair, but two of the face buttons control "up" and "down" motions to climb/duck or jump/slide. There is talk of a limited amount of slow-time powers, as well as wall-running, but they were in their early phases. All in all, this looks like a title to watch, and it's well worth reading the 1up impressions and checking out the gallery. %Gallery-17292%[Via 1up]

click to embiggen At the EA DICE event during GDC last week (the same one where we saw Battlefield Heroes and Bad Company), we had a chance to watch a trailer and a one-level walkthrough of Mirror's Edge, a stylistic first-person game reminiscent of both Parkour and the Bourne movies. DICE went for a more realistic perspective by slightly tilting the camera back and forth depending on how fast you move. The level we saw had the character jumping over fences, sliding under pipes and traversing through and over buildings like a crack-addicted monkey looking for its next fix. Items and platforms turn red while you run to provide context clues for what you can use to keep your momentum going and move forward (e.g. a swinging rope you can grab jumping off of the side of a building). As for combat, it seems the point of the game is rather nonviolent; when our hero did steal a gun from an opponent, she quickly disassembled it and kept running. The game looks promising, but we can't help but wonder how it would have looked if they used the same camera/blur effects and moved the camera back to third person.%Gallery-17126%

  • Digital Illusions reveal Mirror's Edge, a console-only shooter

Shooters! They're everywhere, like a hail of bullets aimed straight for your wallet. Most of them suffer from the "well, we're best on PC" virus, so getting word of a new shooter that has its crosshairs exclusively locked onto consoles is always fantastic news. Developers of the Battlefield titles, Digital Illusions, revealed a console-only (PS3 and 360) FPS titled Mirror's Edge that is supposedly going to shake up the genre. Supposedly, it's going to have a cyberpunk design to it. In anime terms, think Lain except replace all philosophical and existential mumbo jumbo with explosions. If that doesn't do it for you, then maybe the anime Texhnolyze would be a better comparison. There aren't many cyberpunk movies out there besides the Matrix. So, from Digital Illusions, we'll have Battlefield: Bad Company and the futuristic Mirror's Edge to choose from. Pick your poison, or bullet.
