This is it, folks. The winners of the official Game Critics Awards for E3 2008 – as chosen by 36 representatives (including yours truly) from most of the leading video game outlets – have been revealed. Leading the pack with two wins each are Fallout 3 – winner of "Best of Show" and "Best RPG" – along with LittleBigPlanet – winner of Best Console game and Best Social/Casual/Puzzle game. The top publisher was EA (just like in our own awards) with five wins, while Sony took second place with an impressive three wins. In terms of platform concentration, the Xbox 360 barely edged out the competition with eight wins versus both the PC and PS3's seven (for those of you keeping track, the Wii only managed one win and that was for its version of Madden 09). We've got the full list after the break, or check out the Game Critics site for the breakdown by publisher and platform or refresh your memory with this list of nominees in the various categories.

What happens when you take two great things and mix them together? Like peanut butter and jelly, the combination of Portal and Mirror's Edge is delicious. Someone managed to recreate the Alpha level shown in all of the Mirror's Edge trailers thus far in the Portal engine. What need is there for parkour when you can simply portal your way from one side to another? This is an incredible creation that manages to capture the spirit of both of these highly innovative games.[Thanks, Chris!]

Forgoing parkour in favor of teleportation, an inspired modder by the nom de éditeur of EvilWeevil has created a 1:1 replica of the Mirror's Edge demo level from E3 (or, if you'd rather, the initial gameplay footage of DICE's first-person platformer) using Valve's smash action-puzzler, Portal. As you can see in the video, there's no fancy climbing, leaping, balancing, or zipline action – this mod is all about using the portal gun to reach the (all-too-sudden) end of the level. Now to get a hold of the actual mod ... our time with Mirror's Edge at E3 was criminally brief, and we're always looking for an excuse to revisit Portal.

Embedded after the break is 316 seconds of in-game footage from DICE's Mirror's Edge that was demoed during E3. And while this isn't super new news, this is the first time we had a chance to view Faith's impressive five minute adventure and we figured we'd share it with those who haven't had a chance to view it either. There's plenty of jumping, sliding, enemy kicking and color coded obstacles to take in, so make your way to the break and complete your Mirror's Edge video viewing. If you don't watch the footage then Faith will be sad. You don't want to make Faith sad, now ... do you?[Via NeoGAF]

The gang at Silconera grabbed a copy of the Comic-Con 2008 teaser issue of WildStorm's Mirror's Edge comic, jumped across a few rooftops, performed a couple leaps of faith, then landed safely at the office to scan it. You have to admit that sounds cooler than "EA was handing it out and they scanned it."Anyway, the site has indeed posted the comic in its teaser-short entirety. It contains dialog from the game, which was previously confirmed to be the work of Heavenly Sword scriptwriter and Alanis Morisette look-alike, Rhianna Pratchett. After reading it, we're left to wonder if we'll be hearing a lot of female protagonist Faith's inner dialog throughout the course of the game as well. We'll find out in November, which is when both the game and the comic book mini-series based on it perform somersaults and land on shelves.

Unless you are in San Diego, you are not at Comic-Con. Therefore, you are missing the exclusive prequel comic to Mirror's Edge that we mentioned last week . Luckily for us, Siliconera was kind enough to scan seven pages of the mini comic book for everyone's enjoyment. The pages highlight Faith, who is the main character of the game. It also goes into more details about her occupation as a runner and what the game title's namesake refers to. Take a look here.

We don't know much about the story of Mirror's Edge, other than it's written by Heavenly Sword and Overlord's Rhianna Pratchett. EA has today announced that a prequel comic is in production in collaboration with DC Comics, to elucidate the pre-game story and get some more hype for the game going. As if it needs it.The first issue of the series, which will be written by Rhianna Pratchett along with the game, is available exclusively at Comic Con. So if you're in the San Diego area, stop by booth 5233 at the convention to grab the comic and try out the game first hand. Even if you don't enjoy it, issue 1 will probably sell quite well on ebay. If you do make it to the show, make sure you stop by the PlayStation booth too, for lots more hands-on gaming opportunities.[Via Press Release]

Electronic Arts has announced a partnership with DC Comics to produce a six part comic series based on the upcoming run-em-up Mirror's Edge. The comic will take place before the events of the game and chronicle the back-story of its main character, Faith, promising that "Frame by frame, page by page, [readers will] learn more about the events that shaped both her and the city." The comic will be penned by Rhianna Pratchet -- who is also the writer of the game itself -- and drawn by artist Matthew Dow Smith. The first issue will be available at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Details on when the comic will be more widely available are still up in the air.[Via Joystiq]

Everyone likes to prepare for big video games in different ways. Some like to watch video walkthroughs or even trailers, both of which are very normal. But some people, get this, like to read. And not even normal internet reading like you or me, but reading from paper. Rather than scold this deviant subset, EA is actually encouraging their perversion with a six-part comic book series based on upcoming Mirror's Edge, on DC's Wildstorm imprint. Here's the weird thing: After fans pick up the first issue at their local shop or at San Diego Comic Con, if they get bored while reading it, do you think they can just poke a different part of the page to read something else? No. No, they can't. They have to literally put the comic down and pick up something else to do. C'mon people, live in the now!

It occurred to us that despite all our passion for first-person parkour-inspired game Mirror's Edge, you probably still don't get the appeal unless you've seen it in action. "A girl running around on rooftops fighting crime?" you ask with a sneer. "I liked it better the first time, when it was a guy, and it was called Batman." We understand distrust of the unknown (it's the reason we're still alive) so we'd like to present, for your edification, the Mirror's Edge demo. Now, if you can watch this and still not get excited we really have nothing more to talk about.

  • How Mirror's Edge fights simulation sickness

In case you're curious as to how DICE is planning to fight against simulation sickness in Mirror's Edge (not motion sickness, since you're not actually moving), an EA spokesperson provided a number of explanations during our hands-on with the game. For starters a little white blip is now placed the middle of the screen. It turns blue when it's charged for the slow motion action, but more importantly, it serves to focus the viewer's eyes. The rep told us that they interviewed ballerinas to see how they perform spins without feeling sick. Their trick is to focus on a certain object or spot on the floor, which inspired the devs to add the dot. For those who find it distracting and obnoxious, there is an option to turn it off. Also removed was the head bobbing found in the earlier GDC menu. The rep said they are now viewing the game from your eyes and not your head. Finally, the developers of the game told us that the use of the sides of the screens provides a sense of peripheral vision in the game. We were told they hadn't decided whether or not to use letterbox widescreen for 4:3-resolution television screens.

Yeah, but doesn't it give you motion sickness? This is the response you get when you tell someone: "Dude, I just played Mirror's Edge -- it's awesome." And this is how you answer: "No, dude -- you don't get sick."Mirror's Edge achieves bounding, bouncing payoffs without the queasy side effects with a dot. Yeah, a dot. What you don't see in the "doctored" screens is a tiny blue/white blip. The dot isn't working alone though, the developers found they needed to widen the camera's field of vision as well as place it in the characters eyes as opposed to her head, reducing much of that first-person staple: head bobbing. The effect: a game that seems like it has no right not making you sick. %Gallery-17126%

Among the photo gallery goodies are pictures of Gabe Newell showcasing some Left 4 Dead, some SimAnimals and (of course) Mirror's Edge. Browse a bit, only because we totally know you want to. Just, please, please, please, don't let the footage inspire you to reenact the scenes you see. Remember, these are professionally trained pixels in the art of parkour.

Ever since it's debut at PlayStation Day, people have been talking about DICE's upcoming game, Mirror's Edge. Why? It looks quite interesting: a first-person parkour game about a girl on a mission. The visuals have a distinct bright feel, a nice change from the browns and grays we've become accustomed to this generation. Here's the latest trailer, direct from EA's E3 conference.

You saw the animated story trailer earlier today, but now you get to listen to a little more behind-the-scenes information about Mirror's Edge and Faith from the developers. For example, did you know that for combat scenarios, you'll be limited to just an "attack" and "disarm" button? It sounds too simple, but the mechanics ebb and flow with your momentum and how you are moving Faith around. Simple to execute, difficult to master is the theme, you could say. There's also more to the game than the story mode -- but mum's the word until Summer.

Those of you looking for in-game footage of Mirror's Edge are going to be disappointed with this trailer. This is pure narrative, with some excellent flash-style animation to go alongside it. The video gives us some insight into the game's story, which is penned by Heavenly Sword and Overlord writer Rhianna Pratchett. While there's little gameplay to see, the feel of the game world intrigues us. We have a feeling paranoia will be running quite high throughout this game as there's a definite feeling from this video that everyone is out to get you. We look forward to seeing a lot more of this game, which wowed us at PlayStation Day. No doubt we'll see plenty of the title at E3 next week. Also, check our newly updated gallery, which includes four screenshots.%Gallery-22498%

Alternatively, if you get simulation sickness from just seeing stills of things in motion, best to step away ... slowly. Speaking of seeing things in motion, we've also got a gorgeous cel-shaded trailer for the game after the break which has us questioning our affinity for the game's current Unreal-powered aesthetic. Feel free to start speculating about Esurance: The Game while we watch this thing over again.
