Trine 2: Complete Story and Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate hit PS Plus in tomorrow's North American update, as the first month to add two PS4 games gets going early. Pixeljunk SU is a cross-buy deal, so if you get the subterranean shoot-em-up on Plus you'll net it on Vita too. Over on PS3, NBA 2K14 also gets the Plus treatment this week. As ever, the influx of newbies forces old-timers out of the Plus-house, and that's happening next week. You've got until June 10 to "purchase" and tie up Skullgirls Encore, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark, Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut, Payday 2 and XCOM Enemy Unknown. Sony is adjusting its Instant Game Collection schedule for PlayStation Plus starting in July, promising to dish out six free games per month. The games will be divided evenly among its three active platforms, two for each of PS4, PS3 and Vita, and will all debut on the first Tuesday of every month, lasting until the first Tuesday of the following month. Current freebies on PS Plus that had a "nice, long stint" will be gradually phased out in the coming weeks. The House of PlayStation also announced the six games that will be free for the month of June, starting next Tuesday. PS4 owners will have access to Trine 2: Complete Story and PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, PS3 players can download NBA 2K14 and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Vita owners will get Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe for the month. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is Cross-Buy eligible, so Vita owners will be able to download that game as well. [Image: Sony]

  • NBA 2K14 promo offers rare Nikes exclusively to virtual ballers

Acquiring the latest pair of Nikes used to be a simple process, requiring either lots of money or a handgun and poor impulse control. Would-be owners of Nike's special limited edition version of the LeBron 11, however, need to prove their skills on the virtual hardwoods of NBA 2K14 before the athletic wear giant will even deign to take their cash. Officially dubbed the "LeBron 11 2K14," the kicks you see above are essentially the same as the existing LeBron 11 line, only with a new (intensely gaudy) color scheme and a limited run of 2,014 pairs. To earn the right to pre-order a pair, players must spend roughly 80 hours with NBA 2K14, while completing at least 60 games in MyCareer Mode, earning an elite ranking and designing your own shoe in the Nike Innovation Kitchen, among other tasks. Once that's been completed, virtual ballers will then be allowed to give Nike $220 for the privilege of sporting basketball shoes with baffling tiger stripes and a gold Nike swoosh that would not seem out of place hanging from the neck of Rick Ross. Before you rush off to earn new shoes in the virtual NBA, you should know that despite the odd requirements for pre-ordering the LeBron 11 2K14, Nike has already selected owners for all 2,014 pairs. If you're among that lucky group, Nike should be sending you a notification shortly, and your shoes will follow quickly after. [Image: Nike]

  • NBA 2K15 nets MVP cover athlete Kevin Durant

2K Sports announced its cover athlete for NBA 2K15 today, and it's none other than Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Kevin Durant. Durant was recently crowned the NBA's most valuable player, so there really is no better basketball player to have on the game's cover. NBA 2K15 will launch October 7 in North America and October 10 internationally. The basketball sim is in development by Visual Concepts for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The last entry in the series, NBA 2K14, was the first to arrive on Xbox One and PS4 at each console's launch following its current-gen and PC release in early October 2013. The game suffered major server issues, which locked players out of MyTeam and NBA Today content entirely, even after the next-gen versions received a sizable patch. As of February, Take-Two had shipped more than five million copies of the game. [Image: 2K Sports]

Xbox Live Gold members can save some cash on NBA 2K14 and Need for Speed Rivals this week thanks to a series subscriber-exclusive price drops on Games on Demand downloads and associated add-on content. The Xbox One version of NBA 2K14 is $10 off this week, while the Xbox 360 edition gets a steeper discount, dropping it to $29.99. NBA 2K14's add-on content on the Xbox 360 is also half-off, discounting the Platinum Jewelry, Blue Diamond Jewelry, Gold Jewelry, and Spanish Commentary packs through the end of the week. Xbox 360 owners have another chance to pick up the Games on Demand version of Need for Speed: Rivals for $29.99, matching a digital price drop from earlier this year. • MLB 14, NBA 2K14 team up in PS3 double pack

Hoping to tap the lucrative Venn diagram overlap that includes both basketball and baseball fans is PlayStation Sports Pack Volume 1, a compilation that offers PlayStation 3 owners NBA 2K14 and MLB 14: The Show. This two-game package debuts on April 1, six months after NBA 2K14 first hit store shelves, but the same day that MLB 14: The Show goes on sale. The compilation is priced at $90, and offers players both games in their entirety alongside "6000 STUBS for MLB 14 The Show and 20,000 Virtual Currency for NBA 2K14." If you haven't played either of these games, think of STUBS and Virtual Currency as proprietary points that allow players to pick up additional in-game content. While the package is labeled "Volume 1," it's unknown if this is the first entry in an ongoing promotional series or if somebody at Sony simply thought that addition might make the compilation sound more fancy. We contacted Sony for clarification, but the company is currently only willing to discuss this entry. [Image: Sony]

  • Space Jam comes back to life with NBA 2K14 mod

A new NBA Jam may not be in the cards, but that's okay; a different kind of jam is here. A Space Jam. NBA 2K series modder MGX has released a set of files that transform NBA 2K14 into an adaptation of the 1996 classic film, with the Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan on one side and the Monstars on the other. Transforming a 2D anthropomorphic animal or space monster into a 3D model is no easy feat. Combine this with the fact that the 3D model versions of the Looney Tunes crew are basically human bodies with animal heads attached and you have a recipe for some serious nightmare fuel uh ... '90s nostalgia. If you want to get in on this mod or others, check out MGX's Facebook page. Now's your chance. Do your dance. At the Space Jam. [Image: 2K Sports/MGX]

  • NBA 2K14 server issues persist, affecting current and next-gen

    12.30.2013

Despite issuing a hefty patch for next-gen recently, 2K Games reports some players are being locked out of NBA 2K14 content due to server connection issues. A server connection, while not required to access all of the game's content, is necessary for handling virtual currency – which players use to purchase goods and attributes for their custom players – as well as certain modes such as MyTeam and NBA Today. When the game fails to connect to the 2K servers, it locks players out of this content. An update, issued for the game last night, seems to have resolved a majority of the connection issues, though there are still problems with MyTeam and private TeamUp matches. 2K Games' Ronnie Singh has been active on Twitter today, providing status updates as the developers attempt to quell the server issues. Current-generation versions of the game seem to be good to go, while next-gen versions should have MyTeam working again in the "next few hours."

That money grandma tucked into your card this year? GameStop wants it, and is holding a post-Christmas winter sale to get it. The retailer's deals end on December 29 and take $10 off the following Xbox One and PS4 games: Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, Need For Speed: Rivals, Madden 25 and NBA Live 14. Each game is $10 cheaper on their respective current-gen platforms as well. Additionally, Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 are discounted to $39.99 on their other respective platforms (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC), though the former isn't on sale for PS4 or Xbox One. GameStop's sale page features a number of items that aren't discounted at all, including listings for available Xbox One and Wii U consoles. Among the other games and accessories on sale are Tearaway ($19.99), Grand Theft Auto 5 ($39.99), NBA 2K14 for Xbox 360 and PS3 ($39.99), Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix ($24.99) and Gran Turismo 6 ($39.99).

  • 2K drops huge NBA 2K14 patch on Xbox One, PS4

    12.23.2013

A new patch has been issued for NBA 2K14 on Xbox One and PS4. This third patch, which aims to improve gameplay features and squash some of the more pernicious bugs, is available for download on both consoles right now. In the patch notes, 2K Games promises fewer sudden disconnects when playing against others online as well as a resolution to the lengthy blank loading screen that would sometimes hit players when they booted up the game. 2K has also fixed a nasty bug that would prevent players from proceeding past the All-Star break after playing through multiple seasons in MyCareer mode. Some issues are specific to the Xbox One, – such as game invites failing to go through or players entering an uncontrollable state when a secondary profile would sign in then out. Both have been taken care of, along with a bug where blocked players could still find each other in online matches. Now when you block them, they can't find you on Xbox Live. Other minor improvements include resolving a camera glitch and adding an entirely new camera angle option, tweaking dribble animations for some players in order to be smoother and changing certain situational AI behavior. The patch changes quite a lot, so head on over to this 2K blog post for the full game tape.

    12.13.2013

Last night, the NPD released video game sales data for November and NBA 2K14 debuted at the sixth spot on the list. Today, 2K Games has shared some additional stats on the next-gen version of the game, which was made available alongside the respective launches for the PS4 on November 15 and Xbox One on November 22. NBA 2K14 was the fourth-best selling game on next-generation platforms, NPD analyst Liam Callahan said, and is the top-selling sports game overall on Xbox One and PS4. NBA 2K14 managed to beat out Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14 and NBA Live 14 , and is the first NBA game to achieve top-selling sports game at the start of a new console generation. In our review of NBA 2K14 next-gen, we enjoyed the lifelike graphics and additional polish that went into the MyCareer mode, though we lamented the omission of modes found in the current-generation version of the game.

  • NBA 2K14 Xbox One review: Swear fealty to the prince

    11.21.2013

If NBA 2K14 on current-gen systems is the king, then the next-gen version is the prince. While it features the same unparalleled gameplay and control of its current-gen cousin, NBA 2K14 on Xbox One ends up feeling like less of a fully-realized product – a younger, prettier facsimile of what has been the best, and only, basketball sim on the market for the last few years. The next-gen version of NBA 2K14 One lacks some of the substance seen on Xbox 360 and PS3, though it benefits from being one of the most realistic-looking video games I've ever played.

NBA 2K14 will launch on Xbox One on November 19. The basketball sim launched on PS4 this week, joining its Xbox 360, PS3 and PC counterparts. The Xbox One version's launch is just three days ahead of the launch event for the console itself, which Microsoft will broadcast on Spike TV and Xbox channels. 2K Sports also unveiled an "uber trailer" for NBA 2K14 that clocks in at just under five minutes long. The trailer dives into the game's features, from the way developer Visual Concepts implemented its Eco-Motion system to provide more realistic and unique animations to the addition of a conversation system to the game's MyGM franchise mode. 2K Sports' lengthy trailer also touches on the improvements to MyTeam mode on next-gen consoles.

  • NBA 2K14's MyGM mode on Xbox One, PS4 gives players franchise control

    by
    David Hinkle
    David Hinkle
    11.09.2013

NBA 2K14 on Xbox One and PS4 will feature a new franchise management mode called MyGM. In MyGM, players assume the role of General Manager - the guy in charge of everything from player contract negotiations to how much it'll cost for hot dogs at the stadium on game day. The backbone of MyGM is a new conversation system. As GMs converse with the owner, players and the press, they'll build a rapport: make decisions that benefit the franchise and you'll gain trust from the organization; lie to the press and you'll incite their ire. Make enough mistakes and you'll get canned. NBA 2K14 Producer Eric Boenisch is quite proud of the evolved franchise mode. "Franchise modes are a passion of mine. They're my go-to modes in sports game," Boenisch prefaced during a conference call overview of the new mode earlier today. "I appreciate the level of shrewdness that goes into building a roster, whether that be trying to beat other GMs to trades or making very opportunistic free agent signings. It's a mind game and one that I enjoy and tried to piece together for fans of our games." The mode is very much individualized to your GM. Players will upgrade their attributes, which will include things like being more persuasive in trade and salary negotiations or unlocking the ability to sell more things in your stadium. MyGM is not only about nurturing the growth of your organization, but also growing your character's skill set. MyGM is exclusive to NBA 2K14 on Xbox One and PS4. When asked why the mode isn't available on Xbox 360 and PS3, Boenisch said, "I don't know if we could've done this in a single full development cycle." He elaborated that the mode is something the team has been working on "for a good while" now, implying that it's been in development for more than a year. "Then obviously delivering it convincingly, visually, requires the next-gen consoles. When you're having these conversations with ridiculously high-res people at the tables talking to you, the owner - you've all seen the trailers, you know what our graphics look like - that experience carries over into this mode. And MyGM as a whole is a completely new experience. Getting it done in a year was something that's very difficult to do." NBA 2K14 will be available alongside the PS4 launch on November 15, as well as alongside the Xbox One launch on November 22.
