What's on TV this week: 'Evangelion' on Netflix and 'Us' Blu-ray

Despite all the money Netflix keeps spending on new original content, the thing we're most interested in this week is a little older. Anime classic Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to the service Friday morning (along with Evangelion: Death True² and The End of Evangelion) and if you can't tell -- we have some feelings about that. Jordan Peele's Us is also available on Blu-ray in 4K this week, and the NBA Draft takes over on Thursday night. For gamers, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled brings remastered kart action to PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, Drunk History is back for another summer run, and on streaming Netflix has season two of Dark while Amazon Prime premieres Final Life. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Netflix has lots of old TV shows in its library, but few of them have received as much attention and promotion as this one. A 24-year-old Japanese cartoon about giant robots fighting monsters hardly seems to deserve the red carpet treatment. But Neon Genesis Evangelion isn't just any old TV show, but one that's poised to be all anyone can talk about once it arrives. In the run-up to the show's worldwide Netflix debut on June 21st, our team looks back on why the show is so important, and beloved. And, since people are going to be discovering this show fresh, we'll try and keep spoilers to a minimum.

Netflix's flood of content includes a significant anime push -- Ghost in the Shell, Ultraman -- and as part of that it's going to be the first streamer with Neon Genesis Evangelion on tap, worldwide. The classic series will go live on Netflix June 21st, complete with all 26 episodes plus the two films: Evangelion: Death True² and The End of Evangelion. There's a brief trailer to help reacquaint you with its mech action and melodrama, but we figure you can just mark your calendar.

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion SH-06D limited edition Android phone arrives June 29th (video)

Sharp's heavily customized NERV Edition SH-06D phone finally has preorder and release date info on Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, and Neon Genesis Evangelion fanboys will want to get there early. It appears there will only be 10,000 of the phones available, with 3,000 sold via NTT DoCoMo's online store starting June 29th over three days, with 1,000 of them going on sale each day at noon. The rest will be sold at other retailers with preorders kicking off June 16th and although there's no price specified, we're expecting it to be around 25,000 - 30,000 yen with a two year contract. As we saw when the phone was announced in March, it features a heavily customized case, hardware buttons and 3D Android 2.3 skin designed to reflect its heritage. Getting one may require some camping out either in front of a store or on the carrier's website (in Japan of course, we don't expect to see any of these overseas), but at least it's got to be easier than life in Tokyo-3. Check out an in-universe video look at how NERV and NTT DoCoMo supposedly came together to develop the collectible's unique features after the break and our impressions of an unskinned SH-06D here.%Gallery-157463%

  • NTT, Sharp, Gainax make a Japan-only Neon Genesis Evangelion phone, get your plane tickets now

If someone offered you the chance to buy a Neon Genesis Evangelion NERV-branded phone, you'd jump at it right? After all, there's nothing better than pretending you live under constant threat of alien attack, or that the teenage clone of your dead mother could turn into a giant and... moving on. Sharp, NTT DoCoMo and Gainax teamed up to produce this SH-O6D with a custom case, new hardware buttons and a (as yet unfinished) skinned version of Gingerbread that resembles the readouts you're likely to see in the depths of Tokyo-3. See America? This is how you appeal to fans, by making the tiniest amount of extra effort, rather than just slapping a logo on the bottom of whatever regular handset you're selling.

Fans of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion will be getting a treat for their PSPs this coming April 9 in Japan. The PS2 visual novel Neon Genesis Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend will be going portable bringing the nearly three-year old software to the handheld. Like a lot of games released in Japan, this title is getting both a regular and limited edition release; they're both priced respectively at ¥3,990 ($44) and ¥6,090 ($67). Oh, by the way, this is CERO rated: B (12 yrs-old+) so there's nothing naughty here despite the image, sorry![Via Impress Watch]

Kamuraki created this opening sequence parody for Chronicle of the Annoying Quest based off Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's called Neon Genesis WoW. As a result of its anime origins, your mileage may vary according how much you consider yourself an anime fan. Still, I don't think you have to be otaku to enjoy the sequence. I'm a character-driven story kind of guy, so I like the emphasis the movie puts on the characters. There's hints to relationships (that may or may not exist), and all kinds of questions created from even such a simple sequence. I think it works, even if Kamuraki just meant for it to be a fun parody. Click here to see the movie!

  • Evangelion's on the DS, All's Right With The World

The good news just keeps coming for Neon Genesis Evangelion fans. Famitsu has listed a new Evangelion game en route to the DS (yes, there were others) on August 28, lovingly called Neon Genesis Evangelion Ayanami Ikusei Keikaku DS with Asuka Hokan Keikaku. If you can't comprehend that title, it's because you're thinking in Japanese. If you must think, do it in German! The publisher is Broccoli and the price will be ¥5040. Those are the only details available -- but hey, go ahead and order it anyway! It's probably a port of the PS2 girl-raising sim of the same name, only with the added ability of touching Rei and Asuka. NGE has a huge fan following everywhere around the world (and not just for the touching thing), but is there even a slight chance this might see a release outside Japan? If your lungs aren't already filled with LCL, don't hold your breath.

  • Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 2/18-2/24

The DS and PSP seem to be in a tooth-and-nail fight for second place. This week, the PSP took back the second spot, but just barely.Hardware: Wii: 63,504 PSP: 53,373 Nintendo DS: 50,151 PlayStation 3: 14,060 PlayStation 2: 9,634 Xbox 360: 2,001 The DS did better in software, though, with Etrian Odyssey II becoming popular in its first week. The DS dungeon crawler was only 9,000 units away from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in fact. Harvest Moon: Shining Sun and Friends was another DS champ, ending up 5th on this week's chart. There were twelve DS games in the top thirty, which is impressive, especially considering the ton of new releases that came out last week. The new software did manage to bump a bunch of DS games out of the top thirty, though, including big names like Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, Dragon Quest IV, and Final Fantasy IV. To see the software placements, make sure to check after the break.
