Take note, game publishers: There are two ways to take the featured slot on our weekly release list. 1. Be a hotly anticipated game or 2. Have your top competition be MLB Front Office Manager. Yes, Afro Samurai may have taken the road less traveled, but it's hard to argue with the results. Also, we're not saying that we're going to go out of our way to play new series entry Iron Triangle, but we're compelled to point out that "Nobunaga's Ambition" is still one of the best names for a video game ever.

Video games are continuing the battle back from the brink of doom this week, with the release of one of 2009's most promising titles yet: Skate 2. We'll have some more detailed thoughts for you soon, but suffice to say it's definitely worth your time, if only to congratulate EA for having the stones to release a big-name title in the cold, bitter darkness of winter. Also of note is early PS2 contender for 2009 Name of the Year, AR Tonelico 2: Melody Of Metafalica. We were going to Google it for more info, but we were fairly sure we'd end up on some sort of watch list.

Just as in the climax of The Two Towers, the evil forces of Saruman and the post-holiday game drought were about to overwhelm us, when Lord of the Rings: Conquest hopped astride Shadowfax Gandalf-style and rode down a hill to our rescue. Unlike in the film, we did not cry like the mothers of scarlet fever-infected children while we watched it.If you're a PC gamer in the mood for something a bit more action-oriented, you'll be happy to hear that Mirror's Edge has finally reached your platform of choice. If you're not a PC player, it looks like it's Middle Earth or nothing.%Gallery-22396%

  • New games this week: CID the Dummy edition

    01.05.2009

Still no releases on the 360 or PS3 this week, but it doesn't matter. Why? Because we've got a very special guest: CID the Dummy. Our buddy CID has traveled to us from 1993 -- the last year a game about a crash test dummy would have been relevant -- to land on your Wii, PS2, PSP and PC! CID old buddy, glad you could make it! How's life under Clinton? Did you bring those Perfect Strangers VHS tapes and that Soul Asylum CD we asked for? There are a few other games you can find right after the break, none of them with the distinction of having traveled through time.

You want to know why this is the very best time of the year? Because post-Christmas is the only time a company would have the iridescent, titanium balls to release a game about fast hedgehogs that's in no way related to Sonic the Hedgehog.Think about it. "Hurry Up Hedgehog!" is one step away from "Stomp that Freakishly Large Mushroom Already, Fat, Red-Overalls-Clad Plumber!". It's a Christmas miracle.

  • New games this week: Santa still hates you

The most treasured holiday figure, horrifyingly angry Santa, has returned to wish you and yours a depressing, mediocre Christmas, where you'll spend more time mourning long-departed loved ones and watching C.S.I. reruns on grandma's couch than opening gifts. Also, he wanted you to know he's bringing you Spore Comic Book Creator and Candace Kane's Candy Factory on DS this week, so you can just put that in your chimney and smoke it. Oh, and he said that if you actually do have anything smoking in your chimney when he's trying to come down it, he's going to cut your brake lines and set your tree on fire.

The only reason we have hesitation about this week's biggest release, Rise of the Argonauts, is its relatively deep placement in the holiday season. But that's not right, is it? After all, we've been asking publishers to spread the games out, why should we discount one because it's late to the party?Let's all keep our fingers crossed and hope that RotA's release date was a crafty strategy (or a fluke) more than an intentional burial. See all the new releases after the break.

  • New games this week: Persona 4 edition

You may be familiar with classic children's book Tight Times, which depicts a family in a financial struggle. Even if you're not familiar with the book itself, you'll at least recognize the subject matter, especially after you check out the scraggly, scrowdy-row crop of titles filling our game account this week. We didn't forget to list the 360, there just aren't any. Yeah. Tight times. But, as no one says, in the land of Slingo Quest, the Persona 4 is king. Congrats, little guy, you (sort of) earned it.

Well, that's wasn't too hard of a choice, was it? Honestly, if we didn't have Prince of Persia to elevate to that honored slot, we don't know what we'd do. The next closest is probably Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon or maybe the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, which all good citizens have already partaken in (spoiler alert: Niko is a criminal). If you think that's rough though, just wait until next week, when we're betting we'll be choosing between the "Imagine Babiez edition" and the "Imagine Babysitterz edition." :shudder:

  • New games this week: Chrono Trigger edition

Yeah, we know, it's a totally retro headline that could just as easily have been written a decade or so ago, but Chrono Trigger on the DS really is the most exciting release this week. And you know what that means, right? You did it! You made it through the worst of the torrential releases of Holiday '08! We're so damn proud of you we could burst. What's left to fear? Prince of Persia next week? Heck, you could do a Prince of Persia week in your sleep by this point. No, you did it, you made it through. We like to think you may have even learned a couple of things about yourself along the way.

Yikes, we thought we were past the worst of it, but this week could be, in quantity terms, the most crushing one this year. We've got Left 4 Dead, Need For Speed Undercover, the new Animal Crossing, the well-reviewed Last Remnant, and, of course, LIPS.Is there more to see? You bet your sweet bippy there is. Just keep repeating to yourself: "I'll miss these weeks in April. I'll miss these weeks in April."

We almost took the coward's way out for the third week running, insisting that there were too many great games to just feature one. But you know what? We're better than that. So it's Mirror's Edge, and you're just going to have to live with that.We know that if you like multiplayer first-person shooters you're stoked about Call of Duty: World at War, and if you're an MMO fan, the highlight of your week ... nay, your calendar year is the release of Wrath of the Lich King. But we're picking Mirror's Edge, because it's a new IP and it looks fantastic. So there.

Last week, our hearts were being pulled in two completely different directions and we just couldn't pick a game to feature. This week ... well, we're just not going to get in the middle of it. If you own a 360, you think Gears of War 2 is the most exciting. If you own a PS3, you think it's Resistance 2. If you own both ... well then, you think it's going to be tough paying rent this month. There's also Quantum of Solace, Legendary, EndWar ... the list goes on. Which will you be picking up?

    10.27.2008

Much like the titular Polish immigrant, we are faced with an impossible decision of our own this week: Whether Fallout 3 or LittleBigPlanet is the most exciting release. Sadly, we lack Streep's Oscar-winning grit and are unable or unwilling to make the choice: You should buy both, straight away.If you have any budget left over, pick up Guitar Hero World Tour or Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 or one of the bevy of other titles you'll find right after the break.

We're giving the top spot, the crown, the brass ring to Fable 2, but this is a terrifyingly good week for video game releases. There's a whole host of terrific-looking games like FarCry 2, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Legendary, the list goes on. Oh, and Wii Music. Sorry, almost forgot. So, which will you be picking up this week, and which will you put onto the backburner, to retrieve only when you've sated yourself with your main gaming course? Wow, see now this is a game release week. We're featuring Dead Space, because it looks incredible and we're dying to get our hands on it, but we could just have easily gone with PS3's new SOCOM game, Saint's Row 2 or Bratz: Girls Really Rock.See the full list right after the break, just be sure to shield your wallet's eyes first. You don't want to scare the little guy.

OK, video game publishers, we know we said we weren't complaining about the torrent of new releases last month, but now, we totally are. Do you know how long this features takes to write now? Do you know how broke we're going to be by month's end? (Answer key: Too long; very.)Watch a visual representation of your wallet getting thinner right here.%Gallery-33821%

LucasArts' big farewell to game development continues this week with the release of terraforming actioner Fracture. Is it as exciting as a terraforming motorcycle? It is not. But if you're looking for action this week, it's pretty much the best you're going to do.If you're a sports fan though, you've got a double dribble of b-ball action with NBA Live 2009 and NBA 2K9 (thank goodness they're in the same week too, because we just used up all of the basketball lingo at our disposal). Check out the full list after the break.%Gallery-2929%

So maybe this week doesn't quite provide the Horn of Plenty of Sept. 22. But it's a charming little week all the same, with a new Silent Hill game (made by dirty, clumsy gaijin hands) and the return of the Harvest Moon series with Tree of Tranquility. If you're looking for something a bit more visceral you can get totally pumped for MK vs. DC with Mortal Kombat Kollection on the PS2. 09.22.2008

Don't be fooled. This week's list of new releases may look like the first really big fall week just chock-full of new, great games. Well, they're new all right (most of them at least) but we're not sure there's a ton of "can't miss" games on deck.Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway is an obvious one, LEGO Batman will probably be good, if a bit similar to every other LEGO game. Wii's got some good looking stuff too, with Wario Land: Shake It and Samba de Amigo. That's the killer, but there's definitely a fair amount of filler. Our favorite: Barbie Fashion Show: An Eye for Style. What's yours?%Gallery-23910%
