Apple offers three-month News+ trials through Black Friday weekend

Apple Music has long had three-month free trials, but what if you want to give News+ a similar dry run? You can -- but only if you act quickly. Apple is offering a three-month trial to News+ to American and Canadian users who sign up through Black Friday weekend. That's much longer than the usual one month, and should give you a considerably better feel for what it's like to read magazines and newspapers on your Apple devices.

Apple might be planning its own subscription bundle

Ever since Apple rolled out its second, third and fourth subscription services, folks have begun to wonder when they could buy all three together, ideally for a discount. According to Bloomberg, it's something that Apple is at least thinking about, if not actively planning to do at some point in 2020. Unnamed sources have said that, buried in the supplier contracts for news outlets, is a clause saying that News+ can be bundled with other services.

Apple reportedly vows improvements to News+ after lackluster start

Apple's News+ service might be in line for a shakeup not long after its debut. Business Insider sources claim that publishers' revenue from News+ is well below what Apple was projecting (ten times what Texture was generating), and that it's promising improvements to the experience for both readers and publishers. It's hoping to make News+ "more intuitive," for instance, and that could include clearer labels for paid articles. Right now, you typically have to look for a small "News+" icon next to headlines on articles that otherwise look like their free counterparts.

Apple News debuts a guide to the 2020 Democrat hopefuls

Apple wants you to take its news service seriously. To demonstrate its potential beyond a simple headline aggregation platform, it's launched its own candidate guide ahead of the 2020 Democratic debates. The guide contains facts, biographies and candidate positions on key issues, and will be supplied with what Apple says is "timely, trusted and comprehensive" information about those taking part, via providers such as CNN, Axios and The New York Times.

Apple to shut down Texture on May 28th now that News+ exists

You knew Texture wasn't long for this world once Apple News+ arrived -- and sure enough, the end is in sight. Texture has warned subscribers that its all-you-can-read magazine service will end on May 28th, 2019. You'll have a month-long free News+ trial (the same as for anyone else) to see if the new service scratches your itch. However, there's one main problem: many of Texture's subscribers can't make the jump.

macOS update adds support for Apple's News+ subscription service

Apple may have left Mac users wondering where their update was after iOS 12.2 arrived, but it didn't leave them waiting for long. The company has released macOS Mojave 10.14.4, where the centerpiece is undoubtedly support for Apple News+ subscriptions (and, we'd add, Apple News in Canada). If you're the sort who'd want to catch up on magazines using your MacBook, you're set. There are other updates if you're not that enthused with News+, thankfully.
