This week's Nintendo downloads are a bit more subdued than last week. There are still some gems to be found however, most notably the Game Boy Color version of Mario Golf for the 3DS Virtual Console. The 3DS also gets platformer Crazy Kangaroo, number puzzler Nurikabe by Nikoli and a demo for LEGO The Lord of the Rings. The Wii, meanwhile, picks up Neo Geo fighter The Last Blade 2 on Virtual Console. Finally, DSiWare nabs Robot Rescue 2.

There is entirely too much going on on the 3DS eShop this week. The New Super Mario Bros. 2 DLC is here, of course, and Pokemon Dream Radar shows up later on this week. Retail games Crosswords Plus and Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone launched digitally on Monday (and offer free access to Donkey Kong: Original Edition when bought on the eShop). In addition, Cave Story is out on eShop, and it's a great port. In addition, Dr. Mario arrives on Virtual Console, there's a demo for Style Savvy: Trendsetters, and a new game called Samurai G is there as well.

The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave is a new dungeon RPG by Genius Sonority, in which you use augmented reality-type exploration to find little guys in the environment, who then form your party. It's cute, quirky, and available on the 3DS eShop today. There's a demo if you'd like to try it out. Also out on 3DS is Konami's Quarth, a fascinating Game Boy puzzle game that never seemed to pick up a large audience in America.

La-Mulana has been a long time coming on WiiWare, but it's finally here. Today, the WiiWare version launches for 1,000 Wii Points, headlining this week's content dump on Nintendo platforms. Also, time is running out to download your free Pokedex 3D – it's being pulled from the 3DS eShop on October 1 to pave way for the more expensive, improved version.

The SNES version of Prince of Persia arrives on the Virtual Console in North America. We'd forgotten this was happening in the interim between the December ESRB rating and today, so this is, like every Wii Virtual Console release, a pleasant and unexpected surprise.Speaking of surprises, DSiWare's Crazy Hunter is about a crocodile building a goat tower to reach the sky, in order to capture hens who lay golden eggs. It gets weirder from there, actually.

Maybe you don't think you like Final Fantasy all that much. You should still try Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, a suggestion made easier by the arrival of a demo on the 3DS eShop today. And while you're there, you can pick up Two Tribes' original Game Boy Color version of Toki Tori.

It's a quiet week on Nintendo platforms (except, of course, for last Sunday's New Super Mario Bros. 2 launch), with just one new game per platform.Wii Virtual Console fans can rescue hostages and blow up everything that isn't a hostage in Metal Slug X; 3DS owners get to see through the track in VectorRacing; and DSiWare has a sort of submarine exploration game called Abyss.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 kicks off Nintendo's dual retail/digital distribution initiative on August 19. Before that, there's ... not that much new stuff to download on 3DS and DS this week. In fact, it's pretty much just Crazy Chicken: Pirates on both.

    08.09.2012

This week is fairly light on content, with one new Virtual Console game on Wii (another Neo Geo fighter) and one new game on 3DS eShop (Touch Battle Tank 3D, an abstract-looking top-down tank shooting game).A couple of deals are available that might be worth knowing about: Hulu Plus on Wii offers a free one-month trial, if you sign up between August 10 and September 23. And Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is one golden dollar cheaper this week on eShop. There also appears to be a "3D Sports Highlights" video on Nintendo Video, featuring Lego recreations of Olympic highlights. Really.

The 3DS eShop has calmed down significantly after a few weeks of overflowing bounty, offering a single original game for download this week, 3D Solitaire. There is good news for people looking for a deal on previously released material, as the "Month of Mario" knocks a dollar off the price of Super Mario Land on Virtual Console.

Once again, the 3DS eShop is rich with content, including the 8 Bit Summer releases of Wario Land and Mole Mania, the latter being a somewhat under-the-radar puzzle game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and a small team. There's also the fascinating Dot Runner: Complete Edition, a new game that mashes up Pac-Man and first-person RPGs into some kind of psychedelic anime monster, and Planet Crashers, a top-down dungeon RPG with a cute sci-fi theme, developed by Renegade Kid.Two games are on sale on 3DS at the same time(!): Super Mario Bros. and the versatile drawing app Colors! 3D.There's even a new Virtual Console game on Wii in the form of World Heroes Perfect, one of the Neo Geo's many, many fighting games.

The 3DS eShop is once again loaded with content, thanks in part to the 8-Bit Summer promotion, which brings Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and Tumble Pop today. Other content of note includes Petit Computer, a tool to create BASIC games and other programs right on the DS, and share them via QR codes. This week's eShop sale – yes, that's still going on! – is on the Game Boy release of Mario's Picross. Through the weekend, you can pick that up for $3.

We could get used to this – there's a lot to download on Nintendo platforms this week! The "8-Bit Summer" brings two 3DS Game Boy games, one you likely know and one you probably don't. You'll also find some new games, Johnny Kung Fu and Sweet Memories - Blackjack. The latter is, for real, about connecting with a high school sweetheart over blackjack games.Mighty Switch Force is cheap this weekend, while DSiWare offers the fascinating-looking math-platformer Ace Mathician, by Flipper creator Goodbye Galaxy Games.

The "Summer of 8 Bit" begins with two downloadable 3DS releases of NES games that were, until now, exclusive to "Ambassadors:" The Legend of Zelda and NES Open Tournament Golf. Each game will get eShop release updates, such as save states (Ambassadors can update their existing games). Also available on this spectacularly packed day are Family Tennis 3D and a demo for Square Enix's Heroes of Ruin.Nintendo's "Game of the Weekend" promotion continues with a special $4.99 price on Sakura Samurai, from 12pm EDT Friday through midnight Monday morning. There's more, on 3DS, DS, and Wii, so check it all out after the break.

    06.28.2012

This is not just a great week for the 3DS eShop, but it's an important one. Last weekend, Nintendo discounted Super Mario Land temporarily; this weekend's sale on VVVVVV proves that these limited-time discounts are an actual thing. For a digital Nintendo platform, two sales is a giant leap forward. That discount is joined by a demo for Rhythm Thief, which appears to actually be coming out, and interesting new eShop games Bomb Monkey and Marvel Pinball 3D. It's not so great for the Wii this week, with absolutely no releases of any kind on the Wii Shop, but it can't all be good news.

The NES classic Double Dragon 2 unexpectedly shows up on Wii today, in an otherwise portable-heavy week. Today's 3DS releases include the popular Order Up!!, and a series of "Slitherlink" math puzzles.Normally, we don't give too much attention to the kids' stuff on DSiWare, but we feel compelled to share this. There is a game called Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku, and it is a sudoku game designed for four-year-olds. You line up pictures of fruit instead of numbers. This is incredible.

It's a surprisingly packed week for downloads on DSi, 3DS, and Wii. There's a Wii Virtual Console game (and a good one, Mega Man X2!), an NES game for 3DS, a port of the classic FMV shooter Mad Dog McCree, and even a demo for an upcoming release.

Ubisoft's widespread digital Rayman assault continues with ... no, not Rayman Origins on the 3DS eShop, but the Game Boy Color Rayman. It's accompanied by the demo for the upcoming eShop release of Order Up! and a DSiWare game about dodging hazards and slowing down time. This week on Wii ... something! Yes! And hey, it's Metal Slug 3!

If you've got Mighty Switch Force, go download it again from the eShop later today. WayForward is updating it to a "New Edition" featuring the vocal stylings of a young Bobby Brown. Actually, it features five new levels, upgraded 3D effects, and a "retry" button. If you'd like to buy something else while you're on the eShop, the Game Boy Game & Watch Gallery 2 is on the shop today, as is the DSiWare game Snakenoid Deluxe, which is, of course, Snake plus Arkanoid. And this Friday, you can get a Madagascar 3 trailer on Nintendo Video, to bring Chris Rock's voice with you everywhere. And on Wii this week: nothing.

If you're looking for stuff to download for your Wii, just move along. There's nothing this week. But on 3DS, Kirby's Block Ball brings classic mascot-based ... Breakout? And today is finally your opportunity to play Rayman Origins on 3DS. At least, in demo form. There's still no release date for the game itself.
