Resident Evil 5 is coming to Japan earlier than its previously-slated release date of March 12 -- it's arriving there a week early on March 5. But hey, that's not the end to the perks of living in Japan, they're also getting a really hardcore Limited Edition set. The following is a list of included items in Japan's Limited Edition: A 2GB USB drive modeled after the TRICELL vaccine as seen in RE5 A 32-page hardcover art book A BSAA carrying pack, as worn by Chris Redfield It's a pretty nice collection of goodies; however, it also comes with a hefty ¥12,800 ($134) price tag. This Limited Edition is exclusive to the e-Capcom store which will take pre-orders starting December 4. While Japan may enjoy their toys, North Americans and Europeans can look forward to Resident Evil 5 on March 13.

  • Resident Evil 5 demo on Dec. 5 says Famitsu

As if we weren't already up to our eyeballs in zombies, the latest issue of Famitsu (as translated by IGN) states that Capcom plans to release a demo of Resident Evil 5 onto Xbox Live Marketplace on December 5*. The demo will include two playable stages and will include both offline and co-op modes. Caveat alert: as Famitsu is a Japanese magazine, the demo is currently only confirmed for Japan. We have our top men (top men) needling Capcom about the matter, so hopefully we'll have a confirmed demo for other regions shortly.[Via Joystiq]*Yes, we realize that the enemies in Resident Evil 5 are not technically zombies, as established in Resident Evil 4 but, for all intents and purposes, they're zombies, mkay? And furthermore, seriously, come on, we're telling you that there is a Resident Evil 5 demo merely a week away and you're arguing semantics? Really? That's how you want to spend your time? Fine. Suits us. We don't even care. Jerk.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu (translated by IGN), Xbox 360 owners are in for a real, albeit slightly morbid treat this holiday season. The Japanese mag has revealed that a demo for Capcom's delightfully entertaining zombie safari, Resident Evil 5, will be shambling onto the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 5th. Though the offline and co-op demo has yet to be confirmed for regions outside of Japan (we're already eating picking Capcom's brain on the matter), we have it on good authority that the internet can, in fact, reach all the way over there.Update: Capcom has confirmed that the North American demo will be coming "a bit later" than the Japanese demo.

Click for high resolution image. One of the hottest games of the year, Resident Evil 5, is ... well, it's not coming out this year. Capcom has positioned the next iteration of its popular horror franchise as a 2009 title, missing the crowded and competitive holiday season. Just in case you were being lured away by all the recent games coming out, these screenshots should remind you that you should save at least $60 for next year -- or tell Santa to give you a raincheck.%Gallery-5254%

Umbrella stockholder Albert Wesker will have more than classy shades and sadistic banter to his credit when he returns in Resident Evil 5, complete with moves from a General Hospital heartthrob. IGN reports that the former S.T.A.R.S. captain will be played by stunt man and former daytime TV actor Ken Lally, who will lend an extra motion-captured step to Wesker's swagger. The actor, whose on-camera resume also includes playing "The German" in two episodes of Heroes as well as an unnamed security officer on Enterprise, got his combat chops early on as the son of an N.S.A. operative, leaving us hoping that this role will be a case of art imitating life. Well, without that whole virus thing.

  • Resident Evil 5 demo coming soon, may not have mandatory install

Speaking to Eurogamer, producer Jun Takeuchi hinted that a playable demo of Resident Evil 5 will be announced soon. Hopefully, that demo will include co-op play when it finally comes our way. Takeuchi had also said that DLC for RE5 is also "possible," but did not disclose whether Capcom is actually working on it. One thing in particular for PS3 owners, Takeuchi suggests that Capcom has opted not to include a mandatory install for Resident Evil 5. The company has noted that consumer's Majini-like reaction to Devil May Cry 4's space-eating install and are changing their ways. "We're still working on those technical elements in the last couple of months, but we can tell you that if users are dissatisfied with that kind of thing, then it's certainly something we keep in mind when we develop," said Takeuchi. Resident Evil 5 is four months away and will release on March 13, 2009.

Eurogamer is reporting that Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has hinted that a RE5 demo announcement will be coming soon. Joy!"We'll be making an announcement about that relatively soon," said Takeuchi when asked about the possibility of a RE5 demo being released. And we don't think we have to tell you that we'd be all for a RE5 demo prior to launch. You know, because pre release demos make us happy. Very, very happy.

MCV says that it has obtained a list of upcoming Capcom releases with a promising nugget for scare-prone PC gamers within. Alongside listings for 360 and PS3, a PC version of Resident Evil 5 is also present and accounted for, though no such announcement has been made by Capcom. Our sister site Big Download did some Columbo-esque digging with the company, but got only a "we have not yet made any announcements about a PC version" for their efforts. Here's hoping we hear something more official soon.

  • Resident Evil 5 producer: Wii can't handle RE5's title screen

There are many writers on the Joystiq payroll who are of the firm opinion that the Wii incarnation of Resident Evil 4 was the best version of the multi-platform title. That's why we were understandably disappointed when it was outed that Resident Evil 5 would not be coming to Nintendo's console -- though according the game's producer, Masachika Kawata, a Wii port of RE5 was never a remote possibility. Due to the game's graphical improvements over the previous installment, "The title screen of this couldn't have been done on PS2 or Wii," Kawata explained in a recent GameTrailers interview.Nintendo fanboys shouldn't be too disheartened by this somewhat brash claim -- in a later, seperate interview with GameTrailers, Jun Takeuchi, yet another producer for the title, said that Capcom would love to continue the Resident Evil franchise on the Wii, though such a reunion is "a couple of years down the road."

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Wii_couldn_t_even_handle_RE_5_s_intro_screen'; We all would love to see Resident Evil 5 on the Wii. But, according to the game's producer, Masachika Kawata, the Wii couldn't even handle the graphics of the game's introductory screen. When asked about improvements on the game from 4 to 5, Kawata mentions the biggest improvement are the graphics, as "the title screen of this couldn't have been done on PS2 or Wii." We're not sure we buy that. There's still a sliver of hope that there could be more Resident Evil making its way to Wii, however. During a separate interview with GameTrailers, another producer, Juntake Uchi, commented that Capcom would love to continue to support the Wii with the franchise. And, personally, we'd love to see them hook us up with something other than old ports.Head past the break to watch the video.

  • PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Resident Evil 5 co-op

Two heads really are better than one! Unless ... those two heads are attached to one body and both of them are trying to bite your face off. All of a sudden Resident Evil 5 feels fresh and new again. The addition of a new "Action" control scheme and the spectacular online co-op gameplay have pushed RE5 back into the limelight as one of our most-wanted games of 2009.Make sure you have a headset -- or if you can afford to, do a local LAN environment, with two PS3s and TVs connected to each other. Communication is vital here, and thinking through strategies together will help you survive. For example, when facing against RE5's new chainsaw guy (he's real fast, watch out!), James and I thought up a plan. Because I had the sniper rifle, James would bait the chainsaw-wielding psycho on the ground. I'd make my way up a dilapidated building. Then, I can snipe the baddie, making him fall to the ground. James can then go up to the boss and use Sheva's devastating finishing attack. This kind of cooperation is at the heart of RE5's utterly compelling gameplay. In one level, we were stuck in a small shack, with enemies trying to break in. As they came swarming in, we played back-to-back, with each player responsible for covering one half of the area. Perhaps a situation like this would be too overwhelming alone -- but with two players, we felt a bit more confident.%Gallery-5254%

Resident Evil 5 looks to be a step above RE4 by mixing up the over-the-shoulder view mode with a brand new co-op gameplay. The teamwork between Chris and Sheva, as seen in the trailers posted after the break (for age restriction purposes -- view if you're 17 and above only!), makes the duo look like a two-person army. They're really cleaning up the African town of Kijuju of all its troublesome lot. Check out the vids and see for yourself. Also, an official website for RE5 just opened up. Head on over there for character dossiers on Chris, Sheva, Excella, and Wesker.

They say, "Time heals all wounds." Unless those wounds are a zombie bite, in which case you are pretty much done-zos. Capcom's Resident Evil 5 is slowing inching toward a release and throngs of excited fans cannot wait. How has the series sustained itself for so many years? Evolving both graphically and technically, Resident Evil has set the standard for reinventing itself countless times while telling a long, sweeping story that has spanned the globe. From its humble beginings of scaring us with pixelated slow-walkers to the HD-era of online co-op zombie action. Resident Evil 5 looks better than ever and on March 13, 2009, we'll all find out if it will be worth the wait.

While Capcom wasn't showing off any new Resident Evil 5 levels at TGS, it was enabling one of the game's biggest back-of-the-box bullet points – co-op gameplay – as well as showing off the game's new (and improved!) control type: "Shooter" mode. Ludwig and I took the game for a two-player spin, then condensed our thoughts for you in this totally unedited back-and-forth format. Chris: Maybe since it was such a poorly kept secret, we almost forgot to play Resident Evil 5 co-op at TGS this year. Almost! Ludwig: Well, as one of the most popular games at the show, the lines for it were quite intimidating. Good thing we used the Microsoft Booth exploit. A brief wait the morning of the first public day (seriously, someone should have told the hundreds of people lined up at Capcom's booth!) we were in Microsoft's RE5 tent, an English-language sheet in front of us detailing the "Classic" and "Shooter" control types. You get to choose the control type before the play session starts, but can also change it mid-game. I initially went with the "Classic" setup, which is identical to that found in Resident Evil 4.

We can't say too much about these two Resident Evil 5 trailers from TGS -- they contain plenty of action, plenty of gore and plenty of spoilers. All of the newly announced characters make an appearance, so that's a first. Without further ado, take a look at them after the break.

When PlayStation Home launches later this year, you won't have to choose.Capcom, one of new publishers for Home announced earlier this week, is showing off the content they'll be providing. We've got four videos for you right after the jump -- the first one begins with Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono explaining the content for Home. But even if your foreign language skills are limited, you can still enjoy seeing Chun-Li do her famous victory jump. Chris Redfield makes an appearance in the second video, but it seems like his Home incarnation doesn't hit the gym quite as often. The Gran Turismo 5 demo showcases a couple racing pods (check out a variation of it here) for your virtual pad. Lastly, Sony recreated their TGS booth in Home at the company's press conference. We're honestly starting to feel like Resident Evil 5 is this year's Metal Gear Solid 4. The game constantly generated enormous lines at the Tokyo Game Show, not only due to its playable demo but its multiple, action-packed trailers. Though not devoid of exciting gameplay footage, the content was clearly centered on the game's plot and remarkably high production values. If you're not afraid of M-rated mutilation and potentially gigantic spoilers, be sure to check out the special TGS trailers we've placed after the break. Especially the second one.

click to enlarge If there was any doubt as to whether the Resident Evil series had abandoned its traditional survival-horror mechanics in favor of a more action-packed horror experience, the appearance of "shooter" controls in the franchise's fifth installment should completely eradicate it. You know, if the fact that the not-zombies drop ammo wasn't enough to convince you.As hinted at in an earlier producer interview, Resident Evil 5 does indeed have an optional control scheme that is more in line with the third-person shooter genre. The left analogue stick now allows you to strafe to the left and right, with aiming (enabled via the left trigger) and turning assigned to the right analogue stick. The controls are a step away from Resident Evil 4's tank controls and feel considerably more familiar and intuitive. We're relieved -- and you may be inclined to disagree -- that Chris Redfield and his spirited partner are still unable to move and shoot at the same time. By not entirely giving in to the demands of shooter fans and placing one significant limit on your offensive capabilities, Capcom has preserved the sense of anxiety felt when a monster approaches. Shoot or run? Make the choice!%Gallery-33594%
