  • Hands-on: Resident Evil 5

Click for high-resolution image. Remember how innovative the original Resident Evil game was? It essentially defined what the survival horror genre should be on consoles -- and in spite of its infamous "tank" controls and fixed pre-rendered camera angles, it become an instant-classic for PS1 fans everywhere. Resident Evil 2 was also a great game, but it simply added more of what fans came to love about the first game.Resident Evil 5 is Resident Evil 4's immediate successor. When RE4 debuted on Gamecube last generation, it was praised for its innovative reimagining of the then-aging series. The series lost its fixed camera angles, and gained a behind-the-shoulder perspective to fight a horde of intelligent enemies. RE5 for PS3 is simply more of what we've come to expect from the new invisioning of the franchise.Considering the accolades RE4 received when it debuted (considered by many to be the finest game of the last generation), continuing with the established formula shouldn't come as a surprise. With a new coat of (incredibly beautiful) paint, will RE5 garner as much praise as its PS2/GC predecessor?%Gallery-5254%

  • Joystiq E3 hands-on: Resident Evil 5

Before I get into talking about my brief hands-on with Resident Evil 5, I want to make something perfectly clear: I'm fairly sure you're going to love it. It's gorgeous, it's fun and it looks like it's going to be horrifyingly intense. So why am I about to tell you I'm a little disappointed? Well, as good as it is, it's also Resident Evil 4.To clarify, where it's not RE4 is in terms of graphics. E3 isn't the best place to judge this stuff because the setting is always so ideal, but the game looks astoundingly realistic. As hordes of not-zombies lurched towards the window of the hut I began in, I was almost a little disturbed at having to blast things that looked so ... human. From the standpoint of graphics, I don't have any complaints about RE5. Gallery: Resident Evil 5 (06-02-2008)

  • Alternate Resident Evil 5 trailer focuses on supposed villains

It's called an alternate trailer, but really its a trailer with the same intro and then a completely different focus. Instead of staring at Chris Redfield's hair for two minutes, you see a woman dressed like a Greek goddess and a guy who took his wardrobe right from the Xenogears and Xenosaga dressing rooms. Then, around the one minute mark, it's the same ol' trailer from before. Enjoy!

Chainsaws! Dirt bikes! Giant hammers! Tentacles! These two Resident Evil 5 videos from E3 has them all. The first one features half gameplay and half cinematics; new enemy types are shown, and a whole bunch of explosions. Of course, you've got that dude with the crazy voice (he sounds sort of like Meowth, no?) in the beginning warning you of that. The second one showcases a first to the main Resident Evil games: online co-op. The much-anticipated feature is demonstrated after the jump:

Who knew that you'd get some news from the Microsoft keynote happening right now? The upcoming multiplatform Resident Evil 5 is confirmed to have online co-op, with players taking control of both Chris and the newly-introduced Sheva. Unfortunately, the game won't be readied until next year. Appropriately, the plan is to release the title on Friday the 13th ... but in March 2009. Ouch. From the looks of it, it'll be worth the wait.[UPDATE] While the game has been pushed back to next year, it has been confirmed to be a worldwide release on that day. So that's one less thing to zombie-moan about.

After the controversy surrounding the game, we weren't sure just how Resident Evil 5 would turn out. First and foremost, online co-op is not only confirmed, but is confirmed to play a large role. Chris Redfield, working for his new organization, the VSAA, now has help from a female companion; also, possibly in response to the criticism, the enemies are noticeably more "zombie-ish." While the gameplay demonstration was cut short, it was also revealed that the game is set for a 2009 release date, and on Friday the 13th no less.

When Resident Evil 5 drops, you won't be alone against the legions of zombies -- a second player will be able to join in the gory fun as well. The online co-op mode is confirmed at E3, with another player taking control of Sheva, Chris' female companion.Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a while -- Microsoft says that it won't be available until a worldwide simultaneous release on Friday the 13th, March 2009. "Please hang on just a bit longer," they say, "we'll have it to you shortly."Update: Press conference walkthrough video embedded after the cut.

It seems Gamekyo got a hold of a magazine scan that reveals a small detail for those keeping up with Resident Evil 5. It's nothing groundbreaking or any sort of news landmark, but it's still something worth knowing. Either wow your friends or yourself by knowing the name of Chris Redfield's new partner -- revealed in the scan as Sheva Alomar. Not sure what else the scan talks about -- Japanese-fluent readers, help us out! Chris and Sheva, alongside some other cast members, will be popping some mutated enemies early next year. Look forward to it!

UGO has landed an interview with Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi to discuss the upcoming survival horror sequel. Takeuchi begins by defending the RE5 team's decision to use Africa as a backdrop, insisting it is not a race issue. In fact, Chris will not even leave Africa for the entirety of the game. Gameplay-wise, he tells us in the current version of the game, it will allow you to "switch weapons in real time but we can't 100% confirm that that's how the final game will end up." Another gameplay element highlighted is destructible environments -- seemingly safe hiding places can be eliminated by getting knocked down. Takeuchi also speaks of utilizing next-gen console technology to create "bright, outdoor environments" with an "action-based, a different kind of horror." Quick-time events will also remain in the game, but will "be much more active." Takeuchi then teases everyone by glancing at a PR representative when asked about a co-op mode and responding with "Right now I don't have anything to say about that. All I can say is just wait for E3." He is right, we can't wait for E3 to find out more!

  • Rumorong: Resident Evil 5 hitting simultaneously on PS3, 360

On Wednesday, PlayStation Lifestyle posted up a rumor that Microsoft was supposedly gunning for a timed Xbox 360 exclusive, to be paid for in cash money and announced at E3. Following an understandable uproar on the part of PlayStation fans, Capcom has set the record straight via their official message forums. In fact, said record-straightening was done by Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP of strategic planning and business development, who wrote: "The assertion is false. RE5 is a multiplatform release that fits with our oft-stated crossplatform strategy." In the same thread, Svensson confirms "for the avoidance of doubt" that the game will be a simultaneous release on both platforms. Thanks for being so quick with the extinguisher on this one, Sven.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Earlier in the week, PlayStation Lifestyle reported a rumor that Resident Evil 5 would be a Xbox 360 timed exclusive. Thankfully, they turned out to be wrong. According to Capcom's Sven, "the assertion is false. RE5 is a multiplatform release that fits with our oft-stated crossplatform strategy." It was an easy rumor to start, as many PlayStation fans are still bitter about Capcom's treatment of the PS3: the loss of Devil May Cry exclusivity, the lack of a proper Dead Rising port, and the loss of a Monster Hunter game for the PS3.Thankfully, this is one of the rumors that has quickly bit the dust. Resident Evil 5 will launch simultaneously on both PS3 and Xbox 360 ... some time.[Via X3F]

  • Resident Evil 5 still set for simultaneous release

Yesterday the Capcom message boards lit up with explosive rage when a rumor circulated from PlayStation Lifestyle that Microsoft was attempting to secure a timed-exclusive release for Resident Evil 5. As posters pondered the possible position (sorry, had to do it) that Capcom was rumored to take, word came down that the rumblings were incorrect. "The assertion is false. RE5 is a multiplatform release that fits with our oft-stated crossplatform strategy," wrote Capcom moderator Sven (Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP of strategic planning and business development), later adding "for the avoidance of doubt ... simultaneous release."So, why is this news? The confirmation that Resident Evil 5 will release on the Xbox 360 date-and-date with the PS3 continues to show the strong support Capcom has offered Microsoft this generation--something the original Xbox did not see (sup, Dino Crisis 3?). With titles like Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising and the exclusivity of the Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta it appears that Capcom has truly taken a middleground in this generation of consoles. And that's a good thing.

Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi tells Kotaku that calls of racial insensitivity haven't affected the game's design. Takeuchi tells the site that the team didn't "set out" to make a racist or political statement and he feels there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer.Takeuchi says there are Arab and Caucasian targets for Chris Redfield's bullets in RE5 and insists they were always going to be included in the game -- despite the initial trailer showing a less ethnically diverse group of zombies. We'll have to take a "wait and see" approach on whether Japanese developers will continue to fuel the fires of black/white racial tensions across the ocean.[Via GameDaily]%Gallery-24222%

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Impressions_Resident_Evil_5'; More Captivate 08 coverage as Joystiq brags about getting to see a playable build of Resident Evil 5 in motion. No, they didn't get to play, but they still came away with some tasty tidbits. A massive, well-lit environment that still manages to be scary? Check. Melee attacks for not-zombies that violate your territorial bubble? Check. Big dude with an ax hammer (and ax that's also a hammer? can they do that?) and a bad attitude? Double check. Joystiq also sheds a tiny amount of light on Chris Redfield's new partner, the woman introduced in the most recent trailer. RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi says she'll be more competent than Ashley was in Resident Evil 4. Why, exactly? "Ashley didn't have a shotgun."Hit the "Source" link to read Joystiq's full impressions (seriously, do it).

  • Resident Evil 5 more than 60% done, aiming for 20+ hour adventure

Joystiq's Justin McElroy went to Capcom's CAPTIVATE event in Las Vegas to check out the most recent build of Resident Evil 5. "Right now, in the development process we're about 60 percent of the way through," producer Jun Takeuchi said through a translator. "We're figuring that the total play time in the game will be over 20 hours. As you can probably see from the trailer there's a lot of different content and materials in the game for you to enjoy."A major addition to the gameplay has yet to be revealed, but according to McElroy, the game looks like a very polished version of Resident Evil 4 -- not that that's a bad thing, of course. The Gamecube action game remains a modern classic. To see more of his impressions, click here. Gallery: Resident Evil 5 (06-02-2008)

click to enlarge var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Impressions_Resident_Evil_5'; Sadly for everyone attending, Resident Evil 5 wasn't able to be played by commoners at Capcom's Captivate 08 event, but we were some of the first on the globe to see a playable version, so we're not complaining. After showing a new trailer for the game, Jun Takeuchi began walking us through one of the early stages, the African village you've likely become familiar with in recent months. We're told that it's four times larger than Resident Evil 4's starting town, and we can believe it. You can see almost to the edge of the town -- it's sprawling, decrepit and totally imposing. We were impressed that the team has managed to create an environment that's frightening, even without the dark creepiness of earlier games in the series.%Gallery-24222%

Thanks to Capcom and GameTrailers, there's a brand spanking new "Captivate" Resident Evil 5 trailer that's guaranteed to give you a satisfying dose of zombie killing and virus exposure. The RE5 trailer (viewable above) also shows plenty of in-game action, beautiful, gorgeous in-game action where, at one point, we swear we counted twenty-seven zombies on the screen at once. And a few infected dogs. There's also a chick, man.

As promised yesterday, GameTrailers recently dropped their debut preview for Resident Evil 5. For those yet to run an anticipatory pointer over that quivering play button, the trailer heralds the return of the third-person view present in the franchise's last installment, features familiar parasites who recently and irrevocably wrecked the shop of a small European village, and introduces the game's obligatory female accomplice -- though the new femme fatale appears to be able to hold her own a bit better than the president's daughter. Controversial imagery or no, our excitement for Capcom's newest head-buster is thick enough to drizzle over pancakes, and as infectious as that rascally T-Virus.
