Here it is. The brand new Resident Evil 5 trailer. On display are some ridiculously gorgeous graphics, as expected. However, watch a new character be introduced ... and the return of plagas? We're curious to see how this new virus develops, and we can't wait to find out more.

Whether you're in it for the pugilistic spectacle or gratuitous undead hostility, we think there are a few good reasons to catch this Friday's episode of GameTrailers TV on Spike. Not only will we see the character creation mode in EA's cartoonish boxing game, Facebreaker, we'll actually get to see show host Geoff Keighley and EA's Peter Moore break each other's faces. In the game.If you prefer your violence to be dispensed with the pull of a finger (and not the swing of a fist), the episode will also feature new gameplay footage of Capcom's controversial Resident Evil 5. Add a trailer for world-warping shooter Fracture and in-game footage of Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and you have yourself a decent bit of entertainment. You'll find a trailer for the episode, which airs on Friday, May 30th, at 1AM ET/PT, after the break.

  • Mysterious Resident Evil 5 countdown surfaces

Mysterious countdowns have been aplenty as of late. The last really memorable one was when Siren was unveiled. Now we've got another one; this time it's for Resident Evil 5. Spotted at ResidentEvil.com, this countdown still has over 50 hours to go at the time of this writing. Of course, we don't know what it is for. That's the nature of these mysterious countdowns. Is there going to be more news on RE5 or is this just the grand opening for the site? Most likely it's the latter, but keep your eyes peeled just in case. We will, too.[Thanks Paul C. and everyone who sent this in!]

  • Rumor: Resident Evil 5 features co-op and cover system

ShackNews reports that a Resident Evil 5 preview, originally posted by GamesRadar, stated the game would feature online co-op throughout the campaign and that a cover system had been added to the franchise. Sadly, we can't report on this information directly from GamesRadar because the article has been removed. We blame the Umbrella Corporation. We always blame the Umbrella Corporation. The preview allegedly revealed that there would be also be a dodge mechanic (using the right analog stick), a mercenary mini-game and a challenge mode. In the co-op campaign, players would be able to drop in and out at any time, with the AI taking over when there's no pesky human with yummy brains to control the second character. RE5 is expected sometime before the next decade and follows the possibly racist Chris Redfield as he indiscriminately kills all of zombie-kind between him and his goal.

  • Rumor: Resident Evil 5 embraces online co-op

Recently, new information regarding Resident Evil 5 surfaced over at Games Radar, revealing all kinds of (yet to be confirmed) informative bits that are sure to make RE fans' heart go a flutter. Sadly, the news post has since been removed (Capcom damage control?), but not before the crew over at Eurogamer copied all the goods.According to the leak which we're currently filing under the rumor category, the biggest RE5 feature reveal is that the game will include online enabled campaign co-op all the way through, where a second player will play as a female mercenary who'll be present the entire game. If not player controlled, the game's AI will take over. Other juicy details were mentioned including word that the mercenaries mini-game from RE4 will be back and the addition of a new cover system. As far as a release date goes, Capcom is said to be shooting for a 2009 release that should see RE5 on store shelves between January and March of next year. You can check out the other rumor'ish and spoiler'ish nuggets of RE5 campaign info after the jump.[Thanks, Boff]

  • Resident Evil 5 to have pop-in co-op, flashbacks, more

UK magazine Xbox World 360 (we are not dyslexic) and GamesRadar (link seems to lead nowhere now, but just in case we've got it for you) revealed quite a few juicy bits about Resident Evil 5. Do you remember the new female character seen in Famitsu scans? She's guided by AI when playing solo, but like in Army of Two, if you're online, anyone can jump in at any time and play some co-op with you. Also revealed to return is the "Mercenaries" mini-game from Resident Evil 4. A few more features/tweaks were mentioned as well: still no strafing, but a cover system has been implemented so you can press against walls and/or shoot around corners. You can now also dodge and duck using the right analog stick.Stop now if you don't want to read any spoilers at all about the game. We don't want to write them, but we feel obligated to. Consider a small part of us dying as we type these. The game takes place in a small African country near a line of active volcanoes stretched across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Volcanic activity is what unleashes the virus upon the masses. Classic characters abound -- Sherry Birkin and Albert Wesker have been confirmed -- with playable flashbacks to fill in some story bits otherwise untold.Look for the game in 2009, the preview concludes. We said it would be out in fiscal year '08, which goes into March of '09. So, look for the game in March. Then delayed to September. Just kidding![via 1UP]

Capcom has unleashed their infinitely exciting financial report upon the world and it holds a few pieces of neat news. We already expected the new Bionic Commando and MotoGP to come out in 2008, but we didn't expect to get an estimable release date for Resident Evil 5 until next year. However, it's listed as a fiscal year 2008 release -- which extends to the end of March, 2009. Our vote is that the game won't be out this holiday season. It will, however, come out in March. Just our guess. What do you guys think?

  • New Resident Evil 5 info overloads Famitsu

A seven-page blowout of information has graced the pages of Famitsu magazine regarding Resident Evil 5. Some of it is dedicated to what's in the upcoming brand-new trailer (which we won't spoil until everyone can see it!), but a lot of it describes the game itself: the characters, the setting, the enemies, and more. We'll give you a truncated version to read through, but the wordier version is available at 1UP.Chris Redfield works for an extra-legal organization called BSAA -- he has quite an arsenal thanks to this group. The game will show what weaponry he has strapped onto his back, which might mean we'll have a single-button weapon swap function instead of RE4's giant briefcase. The story is set around "an escape from a predicament". This might be talking escaping from the enemy with your new gal pals -- one young blond girl (believed to be Sherry) and one new, darker-skinned girl. The enemy is neither zombie nor Ganados, but when they die they gurgle and turn into foam. The enemy now represents multiple races to appease the masses. Also shown in Famitsu was a shot of a "man" in some kind of cell. Apparently, this creature bears a resemblance to Nosferatu from Code: Veronica ... or to Lisa Trevor from the GameCube remake of the original game. We'll find out when the trailer hits, perhaps!

If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the latest Famitsu scans of Resident Evil 5, they've been uploaded by the folks over at PS3Forums -- look them over. Do you see what looks like Sherry in Chris' arms? Could that other woman possibly be Jill, Claire, or a new character? Maybe the information gleaned off of a post at NeoGAF will lead to the answers in the form of a new Resident Evil 5 trailer, as they translated said Famitsu scans and they say a new trailer will be released very soon. Until then, pick apart the pictures, raise your own conspiracy theories about Chris' latest adventure, and look forward to more soon!

  • Newsweek's Croal on RE5: 'Wow, clearly no one black worked on this game'

Usually, an early glimpse of gameplay from a high-profile title stirs gentle butterflies of excitement. But after perusing Capcom's newly translated Resident Evil 5 video interview this morning, more than a few of us were feeling uneasy; not fluttering, but squirming, like worms in our guts. It's the same feeling some of us had when we watched RE5's first trailer (and again when it was extended). It's the same feeling that burst into a heated discussion about racism, about how RE5's imagery relates to historical and contemporary issues of race -- even if these African villagers are more "zombie" than human, like the Spaniards in RE4. Newsweek's N'Gai Croal argues, "It's not as simple as saying, 'Oh, they shot Spanish zombies in Resident Evil 4, and now black zombies and that's why people are getting upset.' The imagery is not the same. It doesn't carry the same history, it doesn't carry the same weight. I don't know how to explain it more clearly than that."MTV Multiplayer has published some important commentary on the first RE5 trailer by Croal, whose first reaction was simply: "Wow, clearly no one black worked on this game." Croal is not proposing censorship, but a need for context and an understanding that the imagery in RE5 is not just a palette swap. "This is why it is important to whoever works in the American office of a company like Capcom to be able to show this is the history, this is where this comes from, this is where we need to be more sensitive. I'm not sure they've done that yet."

Jun Takeuchi doesn't reveal too many big details, but the small glimpses at new gameplay footage entices.

If we were making a game as hotly anticipated as Resident Evil 5, we'd hope our publisher wouldn't say anything about it until it was done. We'd just pull up in our sleek Lamborghini (which all game designers drive) throw a disc into their mail slot and go cash a check. We're too afraid of ending up like producer Jun Takeuchi who has to be pulled away from making what we can only assume is a triumph of interactive entertainment to tell us newbs how work is going. It's like we're leaning over his shoulder as he toils, our Philly cheesesteak dripping grease onto his documents. You've seen a bit of this before, but now it's in English. So, what'd we learn from the translation? Well, apparently the graphics system is all up and running and the team is now focusing on the "game system and balance." Oh, and the game is definitely set in Africa. Plus, if you're a complete geek, there's a discussion of light that's as fascinating as anything you're likely to hear today.%Gallery-5253%

Whenever we post about the success of a Resident Evil game on the Wii, usually a handful of folks will mention that they wish Resident Evil 5 was coming to Nintendo's console. To see if this was the majority's opinion, we figured that we'd bring up the question in a Wii Warm Up. So, what say you, unruly mob? Do you want Resident Evil 5 on your Wiis? And would you buy the Wii version (advantage: point and shoot) over the PS3 or 360 versions (advantage: oh-so-pretty)?

It's nothing to get too excited about honestly. First of all, the entire video is in Japanese, which makes sense considering it was taken from a Capcom 25th anniversary DVD found in the latest Famitsu. That said, we do get to take a look at Chris Redfield taking out the latest batch of not-zombies in Resident Evil 5. Honestly, it's probably a good thing that most of the footage was taken off-screen, as the sheer size of Chris Redfield's muscles might be overpowering in high definition. Seriously, it looks like he's smuggling T-bones in the back of his shirt (thick T-bones). Check out the new footage after the break.

Fancy a glimpse at some snippets of gameplay from Resident Evil 5 while a Japanese man soothly narrates in the background? Then you've come to the right place. The video above shows some behind the scenes animation (in XSI, no less! Crazy) and then moves on to some combat scenes directly in the game engine. How does it look? Stunning. It looks like Capcom is really aiming to improve on the greatness that was Resi 4 with this game. Still, this video only shows a few wee snippets. We want to see more!

Resident Evil 5 has been off our radars for a while, but some brief gameplay footage has floated our way, courtesy of a Capcom 25th Anniversary DVD packaged with the latest issue of Famitsu. The gameplay is shown amidst shots of character models, and an interview with producer Jun Takeuchi. What can we glean from this footage? The protagonist Chris Redfield is still seen in the same setting as the last (somewhat controversial) trailer, walking amongst irritable villagers who are still hard to distinguish from the series' trademark zombies. Redfield also has ridiculously huge muscles, making us wonder if we'll get to do a bit more wrassling this time around (probably not, though).Check out the brief, off-screen footage after the break.[Thanks, Mark]%Gallery-5253%

  • New Resident Evil 5 footage coming in Famitsu DVD this week

It might not be big news in and of itself, but the very notion we could be seeing some brand new Resident Evil 5 footage and gameplay this week is quite exciting. Capcom announced the release of a DVD for its 25th anniversary in Japan. On this DVD, included in Famitsu Weekly magazine, will feature a couple of games, including the PSP's upcoming Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, and Resident Evil 5. We don't know what the DVD will contain or if the contents will find their way onto the interwebs or not -- but Capcom said there will be exclusive footage and an interview. We'll keep you posted!

Microsoft Games chief Don Mattrick has confirmed (or, in some cases, reaffirmed) via a memo a handful of exclusive titles to arrive on Xbox 360 in 2008. The list of assuredly not canceled titles include Halo Wars, Too Human, Fable 2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction and "several exciting yet-to-be-announced titles." Following the list of 2008 exclusives, Mattrick continues to say that "Xbox 360 will be home to the next versions of great franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil ... Madden and FIFA." We're not sure if he meant to imply Resident Evil 5 is due out this year, but it's certainly a suspicious line. Other than this year, no schedule was given as to the release of these titles, although we now get a sense of what Microsoft feels will keep gamers happy in this post-Halo 3 world.

Sony Picture's upcoming Blu-ray release of Resident Evil Extinction is shaping up to be one of the coolest ever ... at least from a technical perspective. Taking full advantage of Blu-ray profile 1.1, the movie will include some cool Blu-ray only special features, such as a PIP video commentary called "Under the Umbrella" and "Blu-Wizard 2.0," an interface which will "memorize" how you've watched content and store it for future access. Creepy. But according to High-Def Digest, the biggest bonus of all (at least for PS3 owners) is the addition of two high-profile game demos: one for Resident Evil 5 and another for Devil May Cry 4. Currently, the disc is scheduled for release on January 2nd, 2008 and has a MSRP of $39.98. Hopefully, this is just the first of many future discs that feature bonus playable content on Blu-ray.[Update: Capcom contacted Siliconera. Apparently, the discs will feature non-playable trailers for the games, making any real reason to purchase the Blu-ray disc null. Sorry!]

  • It's official: Chris Redfield locked, loaded for Resident Evil 5

It's not like we're surprised. Anyone even remotely familiar with the Resident Evil franchise could have picked Chris Redfield's dashing looks from afar, but it's still nice to get confirmation from Jun Takeuchi, the game's producer. But Chris isn't working for the Special Tactics And Rescue Squad this time. He's working for BSAA -- we can't even think of a good phrase to match that one. We can't blame him, he's been out of work for 10 years, apparently. Ever since the end of the Mansion Incident.Jun tempts us with questions, asking us what happened to Chris over the last ten years, if he's fighting for good or evil, what kind of creatures is he up against? We don't know, Jun! We honestly don't know! He was sparse in mentioning game details, but he assures us there are some gameplay mechanics in the works he can't talk about yet. Light and darkness will play a major role -- if you enter a dark room from outside, it'll take a little while to adjust and vice-versa. C'mon, Chris, wear an eyepatch. That's what they're for, after all.
