  • No more clickety-clack, Resident Evil 5 drops typewriters

Chris Redfield can look forward to aerating the not-quite-undead with a conveniently placed shotgun in Resident Evil 5. However, he won't have to worry about uncovering the African village's lone typewriter in order to record his progress in the event an errant bite finds its mark.1UP reports that the upcoming horror-cum-action game will forego the series' previous means of saving games using typewriters, and will instead feature "a combination of checkpoints and chapters." This according to RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi, who admits that he 'really likes' typewriters, though we imagine he has no love lost for tradition. • Resident Evil 5 kills classic typewriter saving

We all know gamers don't like when classic mechanics change but we're okay with letting this one die. According to 1UP, Resident Evil 5 has done away with the ancient mechanic of saving the game via in-game typewriter.Fans of the series will recognize the mechanic as an idea that changed executions throughout the life of the franchise but was always the core idea behind saving. Now, the entire concept has been removed for a more simple, dare we say Western, approach. "I really like typewriters; they're really typical of the Resident Evil series," Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi told EGM in the November issue. "But this time, the save system will be a combination of checkpoints and chapters." What's next for classic game mechanics? Regenerative health and no more health packs in Halo?! Oh, wait ... Resident Evil 5 releases on March 13, 2009 for the Xbox 360.

Sup, Left 4 Dead zombies? Consider yourself trumped. Resident Evil 5 has taken fear to a whole new level by giving zombies their own motorbike license; just when we thought things couldn't get scarier! The image from the upcoming survival-horror shooter is one of four new stills released by Capcom on Friday. Others include the bus tour from hell and some of the craziest explosions we've seen ... in a screenshot that is. While they all look nice we're really more interested in the Excitebike action going on above. Or, Frightbike. Yeah ... that sounds scarier. We should totally copyright that.%Gallery-32865%

  • Next month's issue of Qore: RE5, Dead Space & Fallout 3

The monthly PlayStation Underground newsletter is always a great source when it comes to revealing what to expect in next issue of Qore. The October issue of the digi-zine will feature three somewhat 'scary' titles, all of which are multiplatform games. Capcom's Resident Evil 5, Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3 and EA's Dead Space are all featured. There's also going to be more on Shaun White Snowboarding. That one is not particularly horrific enough to fit in with the Halloween-vibe theme, but snowboarding can be quite a suspenseful spectacle. We guess it's a shoo-in in that way. Look out for the fifth episode of Qore early next month.

As expected, the David-Bowie-soundalike Albert Wesker will be making an appearance in Resident Evil 5. The latest issue of Famitsu confirms his appearance, as well as introduce a new character into the mix. Her name is Excella Gionne (is that a car?) -- the daughter of a prominent family, Wesker's new collaborator is the head of the Tricel pharmaceutical company's branch in Africa, according to 1UP. Her character design seems to be at least partially based on the gorgeous Monica Bellucci's character Persephone in the Matrix sequels. Wesker looks as expected, and we know he's up to no good, but how exactly he is involved in RE5's plot was not disclosed at this time.

  • Capcom does away with exclusives, goes multiplatform

Even before Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop hits shelves, Capcom has informed of its intent to go the way of multiplatform, doing away with console exclusives in an attempt to get more money, stating that as "a measure to counter the soaring costs of software development for the next-generation consoles, which has been a cause for concern, we have shifted our focus to the multiplatform strategy." That's what it's all about, after all, and in the end this move will likely benefit the industry as a whole. Although we haven't gotten a chance to play the Dead Rising port yet, we'd like to see the Wii get some Capcom love on other upcoming titles, namely Street Fighter IV. Until that is announced, we'll just have to wait and see what they give us. Don't start holding your breath for that Resident Evil 5 port yet, though.[Via Joystiq]

  • Capcom warns of potential 'smear campaign' against its games

Whether it's being punched in the face or eaten alive, Capcom has become concerned of a media backlash against its upcoming violence-heavy software catalog. As part of the same annual report to investors in which the developer and publisher reaffirmed its dedication to Western game development, Capcom also outlined a handful of potential obstacles to its business, one of which it describes as a possible "smear campaign" by the mass media against its titles.Writes Capcom: "Some of our popular software titles have provocative graphics and text, such as violent and grotesque scenes. Accordingly, in the event of violent incidents and other criminal cases involving juveniles, we may be subject to a smear campaign by some sections of the mass media which often point out the correlation between crime and games."What some fail to realize is the vital role Capcom's games play in the education of today's youth. Where else can they learn the most effective means to grind a path through the shambling undead with a lawnmower? Without such knowledge, who else will live on and continue humanity's struggle against the zombie hordes after the rest of us are dead and eaten?

  • Resident Evil 5 controls overhauled to be more Gears-like

Just as we were complaining about a lack of innovation in the move from Resident Evil 4 to Resident Evil 5, we get word that the whole point might be moot. At a recent Microsoft Media Briefing, producer Jun Takeuchi said that players could expect a new control system, similar to Gears of War, when they hunted digital zombies at the Tokyo Game Show.Of course, one could argue that "innovation" isn't necessarily synonymous with "cribbing the controls from another game." But hey, Gears was inspired by Resident Evil 4 in the first place, no? It is, as Sir Elton says, the circle of life.[Via X3F]

  • Capcom: 'PS3 has finally reached full swing'

Capcom, in a Q&A conference call for their Q1 financial results, expressed confidence in the PS3. When asked about whether they felt the PS3 install base was large enough to support big-budget titles like Resident Evil 5, Capcom responded with the following: "We believe that PS3 has finally reached full swing after looking at the success of Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as future large-scale title lineups. In addition, some reduction in the PS3's price was announced at the 2008 E3, and we can expect its spread to increase by next March when our Resident Evil 5 for PS3 will be released."However, they haven't become Sony fanboys or anything. "We are not only focusing on PS3, we would also like to spread our supply of software evenly between Wii and Xbox 360 while their markets in the world increase in a similar manner to PS3." Either way, publisher after publisher have no choice but to see the newest sales figures and acknowledge the PS3's success.[Via MaxConsole]

  • Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls

Today, team Capcom just announced some interesting Resident Evil 5 information regarding the game's control scheme. More specifically, they're looking to overhaul the current RE5 control formula by replacing the classic stop and shoot mechanic with a more Gears inspired cover system. What's the reason? RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi feels that the cover system controls will slow down the tension that could potentially bring a new horror element into the mix. Expect to see a completely new RE5 unveiling during the Tokyo Game Show in October.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Top_5_games_that_should_be_on_Wii'; Rejoice, Wii-owners. You posses the only (un-modded) home console capable of hosting the greatest gaming catalogue of all-time. The Virtual Console's ability to provide an extensive back catalog coupled with the retail and WiiWare releases of Nintendo's latest instant-classics makes your system the inarguable flagship of Nintendo gaming. It's quite an amazing accomplishment: stuffing such immense gaming potency inside one little white box (save for disk space, you freakin' otaku). Yet it'd be foolish and utterly fanboy-ish to act as if Nintendo were the all-powerful supreme chancellor of gaming. They are considered the best by many, but Nintendo is not the only company that creates amazing titles. Many of these come from third parties. Despite claims to the contrary, third party relations appear to be proceeding very well on the Wii. However, through a combination of first party titles on other systems as well as numerous issues which affect third party efforts, we must face the truth: good games sometimes go to non-Nintendo systems. • Resident Evil 5 co-op video fresh from Leipzig

Some fresh co-op gameplay video from Resident Evil 5 has landed in Leipzig, and now we're bringing it home to you. In the videos we see Chris Redfield working together with his new partner Sheva Alomar (also known as Player 2). The first video, above, shows Chris' point of view, while the second shows Sheva's. The two have to work together to open new pathways and continue forward (check out the awesome vaulting maneuver near the beginning). To be perfectly honest, Resident Evil 5 is looking hawt. Sure, it may only be Resident Evil 4 with a new coat of pixels, but those are some nice pixels. Find the second video after the break.

We feel terribly sorry for the first man to come waltzing down the stairs in this video. No doubt venturing into the kitchen for an early morning snack, he's suddenly confronted by two gun-toting interlopers. "Rubber bullet!" he screams, in the unrequited hope that the firearms pointed at him will spare his life. A moment later, he's shot by both. Simultaneously. Oh, who knew that co-op could be so cruel? Find the other perspective on the action after the break.

New screenshots just in, and well, they're all seemingly about the teamwork between Chris Redfield and Sheva, a new masked bad guy (seen in yesterday's trailer), and ... some gratuitous butt shots of Sheva. Oh, and somewhere in between all this, you'll see zombies. What's a Resident Evil game without zombies? There are more Resident Evil 5 images in the gallery.%Gallery-5254%

We hope you're ready for a face full of freshly, um, zombified zombies on film, because that's exactly what Capcom has delivered at the Leipzig Games Convention. This new, entirely in-game trailer for Resident Evil 5 doesn't show too much that's especially new, but it's worth taking note of the vehicle chase sequence and hey ... is that another mine cart level?Click on the video above and you'll get a peek at playing as Chris Redfield's female sidekick, Sheva Alomar, along with some oh-so-brief snippets of various (we presume) über-important cutscenes. Sure, it may be more RE4, but is that really so awful – especially when it looks this scary-good?

Another games convention, another trailer for Resident Evil 5. Not that we're complaining, of course. It looks absolutely breathtaking, and we're glad it's coming ever-so-closer to release. Let's hope that Capcom doesn't reveal too much before the game actually comes out -- some of the most terrifying things about the franchise are the surprises they keep hidden away from us. • Comparison vid showcases similarities between Resident Evil 4 and 5

There's an old adage that goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." GameTrailers user WiiSixty has compiled a video featuring segments of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 gameplay to showcase the similarities between everything from reload animations to enemies spinning like a top from a well-placed bullet from both titles. The question lighting up message boards is whether or not Resident Evil 5's continuation of "the same thing" is well advised or not. Is it possible we're jumping to conclusions and calling the Resident Evil 5 gameplay mechanics old because of the substantial changes RE4 made to the series? Maybe with games like Gears of War and Army of Two borrowing those mechanics we're all a little burnt out on them. Honestly, it doesn't matter much to us. Resident Evil 5 looks solid so far and with the addition of online co-op play we can't wait to check it out this March.Ordinarily we'd embed the video in this post but GameTrailers seems to be having some embedding issues. Check it out here.[via Joystiq]

We'd like to share the game comparison video one person dared to create. One person who goes by the nom de keyboard of "WiiSixty" on GameTrailers, which is fitting since they've created a short subject film pitting Resident Evil 4 for Wii against Resident Evil 5 for 360.The video runs on a bit, but it nevertheless does a solid job of comparing everything from weapon reload animations to door opening animations (helpfully shown above) to the way enemies react when shot. We'll give you one guess which game's prettier overall, but we think the gameplay similarities between the two might surprise you. Well, maybe they won't, since we've already talked about just how much won't be changing from RE4 to RE5.(Note: Looks like the embeddable video has caught a bad case of the T-virus; you'll have to hit up GameTrailers to watch it.)

There's a lot of speculation about Resident Evil 5 coming to the Wii, especially after a statement made by Simon Jeffery added some fuel to the fire. Perhaps because of such rumors, or perhaps for fun, one fan decided to make a comparison between Resident Evil 4 and what we've seen so far of Resident Evil 5.After watching the video, we don't see why the game couldn't come to the Wii. Granted, the graphics won't be as pretty, but everything else should translate simply enough. With that said, we wouldn't be surprised if Capcom one day ported the game, especially after announcing Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop for the Wii.Of course, RE5 still has a long way to go in development, so there maybe something else under the title's zombified sleeves that will end up surprising us.[Thanks, Adam!]

Simon Jeffrey, known around some parts as the President of Sega, is either very smart or ... not. It's a fairly simple story here -- he casually mentioned Resident Evil 5 in an interview about MadWorld, saying "when that [Resident Evil 5] happens on the Wii, it'll help," referring to attracting more hardcore gamers to the platform.Later, he referred to the comment as a "slip of the tongue," but that doesn't mean it's not true. If it wasn't true, he would say "mistake". We're not going to hoist the confirmed flag or anything (as some have been awfully quick to do so), but a guy so high up in the industry couldn't possibly pull this rumor out of thin air on the spot, right? We'll keep you updated, so any RE5 hopefuls should stay tuned![Via Infendo]
