The Shadow of the Colossus movie will be directed by Andres Muschietti, director of the 2013 horror film Mama, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today. Shadow of the Colossus still has Scott Lochhead on board to pen the script, now with Muschietti supervising. Lochhead co-wrote the screenplay for the 2011 action thriller Hanna, starring Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. A Shadow of the Colossus movie has been on Sony's to-do list since 2009, when it was to be helmed by Chronicle director Josh Trank, with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li writer Justin Marks doing the screenplay. The next free game on offer to PlayStation Plus subscribers will be the PlayStation 3's high-definition remake of Shadow of the Colossus, according to the PlayStation.blog. Though it borders on "cult classic" status, Shadow of the Colossus is a widely beloved classic. Our Deja Review of the high-definition remake describes it as "one of the most remarkable video games ever created." The PlayStation 3 version maintains the crisp gameplay and grand scope found in its initial PlayStation 2 release, but increases the resolution of the game while also increasing the size of its textures. The result, as our review puts it, is "an unreproducible treat." Unlike many other PlayStation Plus free games, those without subscriptions to Sony's program will not see a discount on Shadow of the Colossus. Instead, it will maintain its normal $20 pricing.

The film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus is still chuggin' right along, edging ever closer to becoming either the best or worst thing ever, as is the expected fate of all video game movie projects. The production has added Seth Lochhead to its staff, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who will be responsible for Colossus' story and/or screenplay. Lochhead's previous writing accomplishments include Hanna, the 2011 action thriller that starred Saoirse Ronan, Galadriel and The Incredible Hulk.Script production will be overseen by director Josh Trank with Lochhead starting on a fresh adaptation rather than elaborating on the initial draft penned by Justin Marks, the same scribe behind 2009's disastrous Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. We're not complaining.

The man who led production of both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Kenji Kaido, is no longer working with Sony Computer Entertainment (the company's Japan-based gaming arm). "This August, I left Sony Computer Entertainment," Kaido wrote on Twitter (via Game|Life). He said he has no plans for now ... aside from continuing his summer vacation.Despite his silence, it sounds like Kaido knows where he's headed next. "I'm also excited about whatever I'm going to be doing next," Kaido said in response to a tweet from fellow Japanese game designer Masahiro Sakurai (of Smash. Bros. fame). It's unclear whether Kaido worked on Team Ico's latest project, The Last Guardian, or what work he's done since shipping Shadow of the Colossus in in 2005.

Wait, there's still a Shadow of the Colossus film being made? The film is still in progress, according to a report today from Deadline that puts Chronicle director Josh Trank in the director's seat. It appears Sony Pictures signed Trank pretty recently, and the company is already interviewing potential writers to work with him.According to the report, Trank requested the job from Sony. Given the slow-moving process of the project (we've been hearing about it for three years) and the lack of a ... ya know, script or anything, it seems to still be early in production.Team Ico's third project, The Last Guardian, has been just as slow to get out of the gate – the studio hasn't released a game since 2005's Shadow of the Colossus.

Look, just because it's Halloween season doesn't mean everything has to be Halloween oriented, okay? We love costumes and candy as much as the next website, but if we see the word "spooktacular" one more time we're going to straight-up gouge our own brains out. Amazon, at least, has the common courtesy to run a non-festive, yet entirely excellent buy 2, get 1 free sale in lieu of the expected, ghoulish sales promotions extended by other corporations. The sale applies to a boat-load of fresh hotness like Batman: Arkham City, Dark Souls and The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, so check it out if you'd rather spend $120 on new games rather than new cavities.

After last week's slew of premieres there's still a few new shows popping up this week, as well as season premieres of old favorites (Dexter, Mythbusters). Transformers: Dark of the Moon makes its Blu-ray debut on Friday but with no 3D or special features it'll have to wait to top our list. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. Luther The second season of this British detective show already finished airing in the UK but its four episode run is just getting started this week on BBC America. The Wire's Idris Elba stars as DCI John Luther, an investigator who is as troubles as he is effective in tracking down killers, rapists and other unsavory characters. There's a dozen crime procedurals to choose from, but this is one of the few that rises above the rest of the pack -- check out the season 2 trailer after the break. If you can't get enough of accents and tea, check out the season finale of Dr. Who and series premiere of Bedlam Saturday night. (September 28th, BBC America, 10PM) Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection While the original release of Ico predates this site, its followup Shadow of the Colossus had us excited even when it was only in 480p. This week, both return in HD (and 3D) on the PS3, coming back for the first time on hardware that can actually handle creator Fumito Ueda's vision. The two adventure games are some of the more unique gaming experiences you'll find, whether or not you gave them a chance on the PS2 they're definitely worth checking out this time around, check for a couple trailers after the break. ($39.99 on Amazon, September 27th) Happy Endings This comedy joined ABC's lineup last year as a midseason replacement and quickly snagged a spot in our DVR queue with a hilarious ensemble of characters. While the show's premise wasn't a standout (bride leaves groom at the altar, we follow the group as they try to stay friends afterwards) the writing is spot on and gained enough a following to come back for season two, starting this week. (September 28th, ABC, 9:30PM)

  • Eurogamer compares ICO, Shadow of the Colossus PS2 and PS3 incarnations

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry previously speculated what Team Ico's ICO and Shadow of the Colossus would look like in HD, but now they've gotten their hands on the real thing. Obtaining Bluepoint Games' conversions allowed the site to match up the PS3 and PS2 versions side-by-side. "The good news with the PS3 version of Shadow of the Colossus is that the performance is much more consistent, with none of the sudden lurches between 30, 20 and 15 frames per second that characterized the PS2 original," the site notes. "Both Ico and Colossus on PS3 run at 30 frames per second ... and while we might have hoped for a locked 60FPS, quite why Ico can't hit that target is a bit of a mystery, the final code that Bluepoint Games has handed in ticks pretty much every box that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus fans would want." Head on over to Eurogamer for the comparison videos for ICO and the full 13-minute Shadow of the Colossus opening.

As if owning HD versions of two of the best games of the previous generation wasn't enough reason to pick up the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Sony has revealed bonus content that will be included with the PS3 re-release. In addition to the remastered games, the collection will also include two dynamic PS3 themes, one for each title. Also included with the collection will be "a ton of exclusive video content from ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian." While bonus content for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus is certainly nice, any content related to the mysterious Last Guardian is very enticing indeed.

Team Ico head Fumito Ueda was looking through his notes, and discovered a tantalizing piece of gaming ephemera: a storyboard of an unused ending from Shadow of the Colossus. We're pretty sure it doesn't constitute a spoiler, because, well, it isn't the ending, and it's a difficult image to parse anyway. Looking at the picture, we think we can just barely make it out ... it looks like ... Wander is waking up to discover that it was all just a dream! And then there's a knock on the door, and it's Argo the horse and all of the Colossi. And they've all brought birthday presents, and a Colossus-sized pizza with all your favorite giant toppings! If you'd like to inspect the image for yourself for evidence of monolithic birthday parties, you can find it in slightly larger form after the break. We're not trying to make it a puzzle or anything -- that's just the size of the image that Ueda tweeted.

I'm going to say something now and I don't want you to get mad. Promise that you won't? Promise?! Okay, fine -- I've never played Ico. It just didn't happen. A mixture of procrastination and disc-read errors have conspired to keep me from the lauded PS2 classic. That changed late last week at a Sony press event, where the publisher showed off the forthcoming, double-game remaster Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. %Gallery-102414%
