In case you haven't noticed, today's a pretty big day for Sling Media. Not monumentally large or anything, but decently sized, we reckon. Of course, if you're a placeshifter and a UIQ user, you may disagree vehemently. Announced today, said company has unveiled a SlingPlayer Mobile version compatible with the UIQ interface on Symbian OS phones from Motorola and Sony Ericsson. For those out of the loop, said app will give Slingbox users the ability to "watch and control their home TV from a network-connected mobile phone." In related news, the freshest SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 has launched as a public beta, and with it comes a live video buffer, "The Guide," SlingRemote and a bevy of different viewing modes. Take advantage of that broadband connection while you still can -- get to downloadin'![Via SlingCommunity]Read - SlingPlayer Mobile for UIQRead - SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 public beta

Remember those refreshed Sling apps we mentioned not long ago? They've finished baking and they're ready for prime time (sorry, BlackBerry users, we don't mean you -- not yet, anyway). The players for Windows Mobile, both Professional and Standard editions, now rest at version 1.6 while the S60 player gets upped to 1.1; changes are relatively minor, but notable, the Nokia N95 8GB is now officially supported (even though the old player worked pretty well) along with a slew of new WinMo pieces and set-top boxes, video quality is improved on some devices, new channel logos are included, and some "under the hood tweaks." The update is available now and free for existing SlingPlayer Mobile users; newbs, meanwhile, pay a $30 one-time pop.

  • Hands-on with the BlackBerry flavor of SlingPlayer Mobile

There's still not a solid word on when BlackBerry users across the lands will be able to exchange a small sum of currency for their own license of this thing, but we're happy to report that Sling's BlackBerry player was on full display at CTIA -- and it's looking very good. WiFi or 3G is obviously recommended for best performance, but Sling was using EDGE in lieu of a solid WiFi connection at the show and we were pleasantly surprised at the goodness of the video quality. There are still a couple bugs to work out, but it's definitely on the right path, and we'd be shocked if it wasn't out in the wild within a few months. Go get 'em, Sling!%Gallery-19896%

Windows Mobile: check. Palm OS: check. S60: yep. So what's the giant, gaping hole left in Sling's coverage of mobile clients? BlackBerry, of course, and the company has finally confirmed what we already sorta knew -- that a SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is officially in the works. Sling will be demonstrating its latest client at CES on a Pearl 8120, utilizing its WiFi connection (though 3G will work just as well) to stream down an endless barrage of mind-numbing content from the Slingbox of your choice. Look for it to show up on a BlackBerry near you "later this year" for a shade under $30. Hop on over to Engadget for a quick hands-on with the goods!

As if we weren't already overwhelmed with Sling news lately -- what with the EchoStar acquisition, Slingbox SOLO launch, and SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian moving out of beta -- we've just gotten word that the company is working with RIM to develop a BlackBerry-compatible version of its client. Pocket-lint reportedly got the scoop straight from the horse's mouth, with European VP Stuart Collingswood confirming the joint effort but giving no indication of a release timetable. Besides S60, Sling also currently supports Palm and both the Smartphone and Pocket PC versions of Windows Mobile in the handset space.

  • SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian in private beta

Windows Mobile and Palm devices won't be having all the placeshifting fun for much longer. Though carrier Hutchison 3 has had its own version for some time through its X-Series line, a generic, widely available SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian has eluded the populace for ages; thankfully, it looks like that's all about to change with Sling announcing a private beta for its upcoming S60-based player. At this point, the beta's focus is pretty limited -- you've gotta be in the US and you need to be rocking a Nokia E65, N75, or N95. High speed data is obviously crucial here, and those three models happen to sport the prerequisite S60 plus WiFi -- in the case of the E65 and N95 -- or 3G, if you've gone the N75 route. Any Slingbox model will get the job done, and other than that, you basically just have to be able to keep your mouth shut, fill out some forms, and enjoy plenty of placeshifted teevee. The beta's tentatively scheduled to last about four weeks, so here's hoping we'll see a public release soon thereafter.

Concluding a rather lengthy beta (or at least it seemed lengthy to those impatiently waiting for it), Sling has finalized its SlingPlayer Mobile for Palm OS for retail. With Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6, and Palm clients now all widely available, carriers may want to get cracking at shoring up those HSDPA and EV-DO towers, because we have every intention of watching this football dude again and again. And again. Grab SlingPlayer Mobile for Palm OS -- officially supported on the 700p and 755p thanks to their 3G radios, though other models should work -- now for a penny shy of $30. Now if we could only get our hands on that elusive S60 client, we'd be all set.

Right on cue, Sling Media has taken its player for Windows Mobile 6 out of beta and into full public view. No new features have been announced in this release, but for users of Wings, upgraded Dashes, and other gems of Windows Mobile 6 goodness, that's just fine -- a player that simply works is all they ask for right now, thankyouverymuch. Upgraders from the WM5 version need to contact sling for a new activation key; new users can grab it now for $29.99.[Via Smartphone Thoughts]

With the T-Mobile Wing and the Windows Mobile 6 version of the Dash both in wide circulation, growing pains were pretty much inevitable; new operating systems almost always lead to compatibility issues. Without the ability to placeshift mindless telly programs to our phones, we're empty inside and we suspect many of our readers feel the same way -- so high on our "oh man, it sucks that doesn't work anymore" list would be SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile. Sling's well aware of the issue and has an updated player on schedule for release in the next few weeks, but in the meantime, the company is offering to let folks into the beta program for an interim solution. Check it out before the agony of streaming video withdrawal gets any worse, why don't you?

By now, you're fully aware just how deceased Palm OS is, but Sling Media is still lookin' out for those loyal Treo owners out there looking to get their mobile TV viewing on. It wasn't too awfully long ago that we found that the SlingPlayer Mobile application would indeed be making a showing on Palm's handsets, and early last month we got a sneak peek that only made the anticipation that much more intense, but now we can all rest easy, sign up for the Palm OS Beta Program, and hope to get our go. So if you've made it this far without dashing to sign your own self up, well, we'll forgive you, but do your duty and hit the read link on the double if you want to secure your slot.[Via jkOnTheRun]

  • SlingPlayer Mobile heads to Symbian?

Well, lookey here: a Symbian logo hiding out in a little, out-of-the-way corner of the box for Sling Media's new Slingbox AV. If we had cash riding on it, we'd guess this means an S60 version of SlingPlayer Mobile is getting ready to roll. Don't get us wrong, a UIQ client would be cool too, but seeing how S60 handsets outnumber their UIQ counterparts by, like, a bazillion to one, we don't want to get our M600 pals too fired up until we get the full scoop.
