Snapchat is updating its in-app map to help users keep track of places they’ve visited, and where they may want to go next.
Vandal renames NYC 'Jewtropolis' on Snapchat and other apps
An instance of anti-semitic digital vandalism appears to be affecting platforms such as Snapchat, CitiBike, Jump Bike, Zillow and StreetEasy, with New York City showing up as "Jewtropolis" on their maps. Gizmodo reports that zooming in and out on Snapchat's Snap Map can make the city switch between New York City and "Jewtropolis," but that not all users of these platforms are seeing the vandalized name. The problem appears to be not with the platforms themselves but with Mapbox, a mapping software used by the companies.
Snapchat now lets you 'send and request' location info with friends (updated)
Snapchat has started rolling out a new "Send and Request" location-sharing feature, according to TechCrunch. From its introduction, you could broadcast your location to all your friends, select friends or no one at all using Snap Map. This new feature still relies on Snap Map, but gives you another way to share your whereabouts with friends directly. And as always, you have to opt-in to location features in Snapchat.

BlackBerry sues Snap over map and messaging patents
Facebook isn't the only company facing a patent lawsuit filed by BlackBerry: the Canadian mobilemaker has also sued Snap for patent infringement. BlackBerry is accusing Snap of infringing on six of its patents issued between 2012 and 2014, two of which are also in its complaint against Facebook. According to the court documents Mashable found, those infringement claims affect Snap Map and the ephemeral app's messaging technology, which BlackBerry says copies the tech it uses for BBM. In BlackBerry's complaint against Facebook, it said it invented the core aspects of modern messaging, so it's not surprising that that particular aspect is also part of its lawsuit against Snap.
Snapchat’s Map Explore makes it easier to find your friends
Snapchat is rolling out a new feature that will make it easier to find events and see friends' updates on Snap Map, The Verge reports. Rather than looking through the map to see where your friends are or to find an interesting Our Story snap collection, Map Explore will provide updates for you to view and swipe through. Once you open Snapchat, pinch the screen to bring up Snap Map. Then just tap "New Updates" at the bottom of the map and you'll see updates from your friends who have chosen to share their location as well as Snapchat's updates to its Our Story collections. You can swipe left to see additional updates, and to see your own status, just head to the Settings icon where you can delete it or turn it off.
Snapchat brings Snap Map to the web
Last year, Snapchat released Snap Map, collections of public Stories laid out on a map so you can check out what your pals are up to or see if anything interesting is happening nearby. Now, Snapchat has made the map viewable on the web. Whether you're on Snapchat or not, you can head over to map.snapchat.com and view public Stories from around the world.
The Snap Map is another way to stalk your pals in real time
In addition to being the place you share evidence of all the fun you're having and potentially where you land a job with McDonald's, Snapchat also wants to be the app you use to find cool stuff to do. Its latest feature, called the Snap Map, shows collections of public Stories from events around you so you can go straight to the site of that super awesome-looking concert or street fair after seeing posts about it.
