  • TUAW TV Live: It's beginning to look a lot like AirPrint

While we cover a lot of Apple accessories here at TUAW, it's quite rare when we touch upon a peripheral that many Apple fans find indispensable to their life -- the printer. On today's TUAW TV Live, you'll see a preview of a video review that will be posted a bit later today about the HP Photosmart Premium C310a e-All-in-One printer. What's so exciting about a printer? Well, this is one of those printers that requires no drivers and shows up in your iPad or iPhone's printer list automatically. It also prints any document you email to it from wherever, and it doesn't even need a computer to print out maps and other useful information. There's more to today's show than printers, though. I'll also show off some new products for iPhone and iPad, as well as do a live run-through of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac for those of you who are still on the bubble about upgrading to the new version. How can you join in on the fun? From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the read more link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. We haven't neglected our iPad users, since you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. And one final note -- if the show has started and you're seeing a previously recorded show instead of the livestream, you can always pop on over to ustream.tv/tuaw to join the show in progress.

  • TUAW TV Live today at 5 PM ET: Printers, iPad docks, and Office '11

This afternoon on TUAW TV Live, I have some rather fascinating demos to show you. First, I'll be using a new HP Photosmart C310a e-All-in-One printer to demonstrate how printing from an iPad or iPhone running iOS 4.2 is supposed to work. This printer is one of a handful that supports ePrint and zero-configuration printing, so you can literally set up the printer to work with Macs, PCs and iDevices without installing a driver anywhere, or print anything that you can email. It's an interesting look at the future of printing. Next, I'll be demonstrating a new iPad dock with speakers, the PadDock 10 from SMK-Link. For those who want to use their iPads to show off media, the PadDock 10 is a useful docking station for viewing, listening, syncing and charging your device. I also took advantage of a Cyber Monday sale to get a family pack for Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac Home and Student Edition, and I'll show you some of the features of the new Office suite. Hint: it's fast. Damned fast. Of course, we'll have some time to talk about whatever else is new in the world of Apple. Whether it's rumors of the iPad 2, the competition or just chatting about the coolest app you've ever used, we'll spare some time for your input and comments. If you've never watched TUAW TV Live, you're in for a treat. The show is about an hour long, and you not only see streaming video of some of the latest and greatest Apple technology, but you can also participate through our chat tool. To watch and participate in the show, just be sure to come back to TUAW.com at about 4:55 PM ET for full instructions on how to join in on the fun.

It's nearly 5 PM ET, which means it's time for TUAW TV Live. This is the weekly livestreaming video show where me and a group of Apple geeks get together to chat about the latest news from Cupertino and beyond. Today's show is all about what iOS 4.2 brought to the picture. I'll do some live demos of some of the features in action, and will have recorded video for other features that need an Apple TV to show off. I'll also be demoing RapidWeaver 5.0, which was released today. You can even enter to win a free license for RapidWeaver, valued at US$79. 12.01.2010

A few weeks ago, in anticipation of iOS 4.2 making its way to our iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads, I hosted an hour-long episode of TUAW TV Live in which we journeyed together through some of the upcoming features of the OS upgrade. On today's show, we'll see how well some of the new features work in reality. I'll show you how AirPrint works from iPad and iPhone using Ecamm's Printopia software on the Mac, play with AirPlay, and discuss the pros and cons of iOS 4.2. With RapidWeaver 5.0 now available and a giveaway of ten licenses for the popular web design tool going on right now here on TUAW, I'll also be demonstrating the new version of the application and highlighting some of the features of RapidWeaver 5.0. With Apple seemingly ignoring iWeb during the release of iLife '11, RapidWeaver is looking like a contender for the title of best easy-to-use web design tool. Join us at 5 PM ET today here at TUAW. Just drop by a few minutes before the start of the show for instructions on how to view the livestream and participate in the chat. Remember that all TUAW TV Live shows are archived for your viewing pleasure on Ustream.

  • TUAW TV Live: The pre-Thanksgiving feast

    11.17.2010

Sure, Thanksgiving Day isn't until next Thursday here in the good ol' US of A, but I'm going to be taking next Wednesday off so this will be my pre-Thanksgiving TUAW TV Live show. Think of it as being one of those college football roundups that they do prior to Turkey Day, or perhaps a preview of the Macy's Parade that gets rolled out on local network affiliates a week too early. On today's show, I'll be covering a lot of ground, with everything from iPad synthesizer and cable TV remote apps to a new iPhone app that lets you see what song is next in your shuffle queue. I'll also continue the Sunday night TUAW Talkcast topic about backups by making some recommendations and demonstrating some Mac backup apps. I've also got a pile of iPhone and iPad accessories to show off, some of which we've covered in TUAW posts over the last few weeks. From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Continue Reading link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and participate in the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. We haven't neglected our iPad users, since you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. • TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET: Apple jambalaya

    11.17.2010

Last night, I made shrimp and andouille sausage jambalaya for dinner, a delicious mish-mash of flavors and ingredients that originated in Louisiana Creole cooking. What does that have to do with today's TUAW TV Live show? Well, I don't have any one topic that's going to dominate the show today, so I'll be giving you a little bit of iPad, a heapin' helpin' of Mac, a sprig of iPhone, and a dash of Apple TV. Think of it as a pre-Thanksgiving Apple feast. Dang. Now I'm hungry. To join in on the fun, be sure to drop by TUAW just before 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) today, and we'll have complete instructions on how you can watch or participate in the show. Note that TUAW TV Live will not be presented on November 24th, 2010, so this will be your last chance for two weeks to enjoy the festivities and chat with other TUAW readers.

  • The iOS 4.2 preview show, today on TUAW TV Live

Fortunately for those of us who are easily amused, Apple's operating system updates seem to be scheduled just far apart enough to make each release seem like Christmas Day. We anxiously await for the release to show up like kids waiting to open a special present, we tear open the box (in this analogy, we load the new OS), and then we're torn between excitement for our new toy and disappointment that it's usually not everything we has wished for. Well, today I'm going to try to whip up some excitement about iOS 4.2. We've said a lot about the new release here on TUAW, and many other Apple sites have covered it in detail as well. But for those of you who need a refresher course in what's going to be new and exciting, join in our live streaming video and chat with the other TUAW readers who show up here every Wednesday afternoon. (I'd also appreciate it if someone could try out the new Skyfire Browser to see if that works for watching the show) We haven't neglected our iPad users, since you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. And one final note -- if the show has started and you're seeing a previously recorded show instead of the livestream, you can always pop on over to ustream.tv/tuaw to join the show in progress.

    11.10.2010

Today on TUAW TV Live, I'll be talking about one topic that should be very timely -- iOS 4.2. Many of us in the Apple blogging biz are hearing that 4.2 might be released on Friday morning, bringing such features as multitasking, GameCenter, AirPrint wireless printing (see post about the crippling of that feature), and AirPlay to the iPad, and a ton of changes to the iPhone and iPod touch. You can join in on the discussion of the newest update to iOS (and the first major software update for iPad since its introduction) today on TUAW TV Live. Just come back to TUAW.com at about 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) for complete instructions on how to join the chat and livestream.

  • TUAW TV Live: Tools for writing the Great American Novel on your Mac

    11.03.2010

If you saw the teaser post earlier today, you probably know that today's topic on TUAW TV Live is writing tools. The Mac is a wonderful machine for writers, and there are many applications available to help you slide through a bad case of writer's block and get that novel written. Since this is National Novel Writing Month and I'm hard at work on my third trashy novel, I thought it would be a perfect time to spotlight some of the writing tools for Mac. Today on a special remote edition of TUAW TV Live, I'll be screening some amazing video clips for you that show Apple product releases of the past. It's hard to believe how far Apple and its product lines have come since the late 1990s. You'll see the first incarnations of some of the current Apple cash cows and marvel at how bad the specifications were on top-of-the-line equipment just a little over a decade ago. How can you join in on the fun? From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the read more link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. 10.27.2010

On today's TUAW TV Live, I'll be taking you on a video trip down memory lane. If you're an old-time Apple geek like I am, you'll remember these product rollouts with a bit of nostalgia. Relative newbies are going to gawk in awe at Apple CEO Steve Jobs with more hair (and weight) than he has now. You'll laugh at the horrible specs of the equipment that is applauded and cheered at the events and shake your head at the design of some of the older product lines. To join me on this remote edition of TUAW TV Live (I'm out in Silicon Valley this week), drop by a few minutes before 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT), and you'll see a full set of instructions on how to watch the show and join in on the chat. As part of today's show, I'll also be talking about computing on the road -- something I've been doing for way too long. I'll pass along some hints on how to make your mobile computing work for you. I'll see you at 5 PM EDT today, here at TUAW.com.

  • TUAW TV Live redux: New MacBook Air unboxing video

    by

    10.21.2010

If you attended our liveblog of yesterday's Back to the Mac event, you were introduced to Sam Levin, a Bay Area PR guy who also happens to love Apple products. Sam was our man-on-the-street for the liveblog, sitting in the audience and giving us a firsthand view of the proceedings. On his way out of the keynote venue, Sam noticed a table with a pile of Apple retail bags -- a very large pile of bags -- so he walked over to see what was going on. It turns out that Steve Jobs' invitation to the press to get a hands-on demo of the new MacBook Air was actually an invitation to take one home for two months. Sam picked up an 11" model and headed for his home office. Shortly after Victor Agreda and I finished up our TUAW TV Live stint talking about the event, Sam was ready to do the typical Apple fanboy thing -- an unboxing of the MacBook Air. If you missed the live video yesterday afternoon, now's your chance to see just how thin that new device really is. Sam compares it side by side with an iPad, boots it up (note that it takes a long time for the 11" model to boot, but it's pretty fast after that), and even does a quick FaceTime chat with me on my Mac. The video is on the next page; click the Read More link to view it.

When last week's episode of TUAW TV Live was being streamed, my Apple TV had just been delivered and I hadn't been able to do more than shoot a quick unboxing video. After a week, I've had an opportunity to put the new Apple TV through its paces and find what I like and dislike about the new unit. This afternoon, join me for a special Apple TV edition of TUAW TV Live. I'll show you the device, how it connects to the world, and give you a detailed tour of the Lowtide user interface. I'll also demonstrate the use of Apple's free Remote app in controlling the Apple TV, and then we'll open the chat room to discussion of the device. It all starts at 5 PM EDT today here at TUAW. Today's special guest on TUAW TV Live will be veteran podcaster Sam Levin, host of the AppMinute podcast (click to subscribe). Sam's well-known for short podcasts that are chock-full of plenty of information. When the two of us get together on the air this afternoon at 5 PM EDT, we'll have a lot to talk about. Some probable topics on the show will be the recent clarification of Apple's app acceptance criteria, some of the apps that have been welcomed to the App Store as a result, and what this all means for developers and app purchasers. We'll also talk a bit about the Android platform and its impact in terms of competition to iOS. Those topics and more will be discussed when we get together for TUAW TV Live. Be sure to drop by TUAW just before 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT) to get the livestream viewer up and running, and to log into the chat room. You can also visit TUAW TV Live's home on Ustream at http://ustream.tv/tuaw to view and participate in the show.
