Download to PSP For some reason, fighting games need to tell a story of why people are punching and kicking each other in the face. This new anime clip (presented in English) tells the story of Chun-Li's return to the Street Fighter IV circuit. There are a number of familiar faces in this short video -- SF fans will obviously feel a little bit of nostalgia return once they see these characters return once again.

While the games themselves weren't exactly brimming with story the Street Fighter franchise does have an intricate and developed lore behind it. The latest trailer for Street Fighter IV outlines the where some of our favorite heroes disappeared to after the events in Street Fighter II. Watching the video just gets us more and more excited to play Street Fighter IV and considering it will include cut-scenes of the same caliber we're down-right-fierce with anticipation. That's right, we went there.

  • Gouken added to hidden roster of Street Fighter IV

The martial arts master known for teaching Ryu and Ken everything they know has been added as a secret character in Street Fighter IV. Gouken, who is often mistakenly referred to as Sheng Long, will be a computer-controlled character only -- meaning he is not set to be a playable character in the upcoming fighter. Many back stories exist for the fallen master of Ryu and Ken, but we have a few favorites. In one familiar back story, Gouken is challenged by his brother Akuma, who is also the murderer of their master Goutetsu, where Akuma eventually kills his brother in the altercation. Another story, set up as the basis of Ken and Ryu's journey in Street Fighter II, sees Gouken killed by the invading mastermind M. Bison.Capcom promises the character will require a special unlock procedure but we think it's safe to say that when Gouken is squaring off against you, he will be one tough hombre to wrassle with.

Sorry to disappoint you, thick-leg fetishists, but only Chun-Li's trunk is on display in the North American box, her massive thighs having apparently been buried in the ground to provide additional stability for her hefty wrist spikes and hair buns. You can check the whole box out in excruciating detail at Capcom's site. The European version opts to promote Ryu (much to Ken's chagrin, we're sure) but he looks a bit ... muppety for our tastes. Which one do you fellas and ladies prefer?

Recently, Capcom unveiled the box art for a little game known as Street Fighter IV, surprising us with not one but TWO different covers. Yes sir, SFIV will actually sport two separate box art covers, one for the United States and another for Europe. And if you look above, you'll see both covers in all their glory. The left is U.S. The right is Europe. Looks to us like the U.S. got screwed.

  • Capcom does away with exclusives, goes multiplatform

Even before Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop hits shelves, Capcom has informed of its intent to go the way of multiplatform, doing away with console exclusives in an attempt to get more money, stating that as "a measure to counter the soaring costs of software development for the next-generation consoles, which has been a cause for concern, we have shifted our focus to the multiplatform strategy." That's what it's all about, after all, and in the end this move will likely benefit the industry as a whole. Although we haven't gotten a chance to play the Dead Rising port yet, we'd like to see the Wii get some Capcom love on other upcoming titles, namely Street Fighter IV. Until that is announced, we'll just have to wait and see what they give us. Don't start holding your breath for that Resident Evil 5 port yet, though.[Via Joystiq]

  • Street Fighter IV producer discusses console characters, lag problems

Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono sat down with Videogamer to talk about the console versions of the latest incarnation of the classic fighting game series. He had a ton of information to share, and here are some highlights: Ono recognizes lag as a series problem for online play. They are working on a solution which involves "trying to balance it up at user interface level and input timing by using joystick or something like that." We don't really know what that means either. Parrying is gone, in case you didn't know already. Ono wants "Street Fighter IV to be a tool for everyone to enjoy" and parrying is "quite hard for the vast majority to master." There will be a story/adventure mode on the console versions. There won't be any specific console-exclusive characters, meaning we won't have to buy multiple versions of the game just to play them all. (Editor's note: Yay!) However, there will be characters, such as Cammy, who will appear in the console versions but not the arcade versions. Ono also answers questions regarding post-release patches to rebalance the game, the possibility of Street Fighter III on the PSN, and more. Check out the full interview here. [Via Capcom-Unity]

The UK's official Xbox 360 magazine posed an inevitable question to Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono: How's it going to play online? For his part, Ono was quite frank, saying, "Obviously lag will be a huge problem for online play. We're working on it. It's quite difficult for 3D Street Fighter at the moment."Asked how the developer is going about, er, combating the problem, Ono got technical. "In order to prevent the lag we're thinking about trying to balance it up at [the] user interface level and input timing," he said. "We still haven't got a complete plan as yet. We're still working on it. That's all we can say at the moment." Okay ... we'll let you get back to that, then.

  • No console specific fighters in Street Fighter 4

Unlike a certain soulless fighting game, Capcom's Street Fighter 4 will not be doing console specific fighters due to it not being "very fair". In an interview with videogamer.com, SF4 producer Yoshinori Ono mentioned that they don't "want to give an exclusive character for any particular console," saying that "it's not very fair" to make specific fighters only available on certain platforms. And if your mind is already wandering down the downloadable content path, know that Ono says their decision to not offer console specific SF4 fighters is a rule for DLC as well. So, take that Yoda and SoulCalibur IV ... YEAH![Via Shacknews]

Street Fighter IV is unlikely to have exclusive console-specific characters (like Soul Calibur IV) when it releases next year, the game's producer tells Videogamer. Yoshinori Ono believes the idea of exclusive characters is unfair -- and that extends to "downloadable characters" as well.Yoshinori expresses that this is only his "policy," however, so we won't rule out the influence of the Capcom overlords. SF IV is expected on consoles around the time the Street Fighter movie releases in early 2009.%Gallery-21918%

First introduced to the world in Super Street Fighter II, the be-thonged British secret agent / world warrior, Cammy, will "definitely" appear in the home versions of Street Fighter IV, producer Yoshinori Ono tells 1UP.Capcom conducted a poll on its blog last month, asking users which classic character they'd most like to see return for the console and PC ports. The list included T. Hawk, Dan, Ibuki, Sakura, Hugo, Fei Long, Dee Jay, and Cammy. In addition to revealing the winning fan favorite, Ono hinted that Tokyo Game Show may see – along with the PS3 version of SFIV – the unveiling of another home-only combatant: the fabled Sheng Long. If he does show up, you'll surely have to "defeat him" to "stand a chance."[Via Wired]

  • Top 5: Gaming in Japan

Musicians have Vienna. Catholics have the Vatican. And gamers have Japan. While many significant contributions to the world of gaming have come from outside the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan is the unassailable fountainhead of modern video gaming. It's the birth and workplace of gaming giants such as Hideo Kojima, Shinji Mikami, Yuji Naka, and probably others. To say that Japan is a place that hardcore gamers need to check out is an understatement at best. Recently, I took a week to visit my brother who teaches English at a Japanese university near Nagoya. Hundreds of thousands of words could be used to describe the wonderful food, the beautiful temples, and the unique culture of the country. But being a life-long gamer, I paid special attention to the distinct connection between the country and the gaming scene we all know and love. For the Top 5, I usually come up with a topic, then list the top five items for that topic in order. For this edition, it was truly difficult to narrow it down to only five. With that in mind, here's my best attempt at listing the Top 5 gaming elements of my time in Japan. NEXT >> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } The Top 5 is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. • Akuma smacking evil back into Street Fighter IV

We're not exactly sure if it was supposed to be a secret, considering we've seen his ginger likeness in media for the game before, but Capcom recently revealed a few Street Fighter IV screenshots featuring the series' crimson-haired big bad, Akuma. Apparently, he only rears his nefarious head when an arcade player is doing a little too good, and hasn't fed the machine any precious quarters in a while. While he may seem like SFIV's official toll collector, the video posted after the jump proves that he can, in fact, be whooped up upon -- and that he's also a Hadoken-spamming jerk.

  • Capcom 'contemplating' doing more Wii ports

Christian Svensson, VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development at Capcom, is a man of the people. When someone sends out a distress call, he quickly hops down from atop his mountain of unsold copies of Zack & Wiki and Okami to help out. He may not be wearing a cape and mask, but we think he's a super hero. Why all the Sven love? Because the dude gave us hope for some more Capcom support on the Wii. When Capcom fan John voiced his concern over a lack of Bionic Commando on the Wii, Christian stepped in to let John know that Capcom won't be forgetting about the console after Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop. "We are contemplating versions of one or two of the CEI titles you've mentioned on the Wii (not saying which), but we'd like to see how they do on their initial target systems before doubling down on additional SKUs." What titles could he be referring to? Siliconera speculates that it could be Flock, Age of Booty, Dark Void, and Street Fighter IV up for consideration, as these are Capcom Entertainment Incorporated ("CEI") projects. Flock seems like the natural choice, but we'd be lying if we said that the prospect of Dark Void or Street Fighter IV on the Wii was unappealing. That Dark Void game certainly looked cool at E3. We'd have liked to play it, but we were too busy playing games for you all. [Via Joystiq]

Capcom is offering this pretty rare opportunity, especially for Westerners like us, to vote for who we want to see in the console versions of Street Fighter IV. You can pick from the following list of fighters: Cammy, Hugo, Dee Jay, Ibuki, Fei Long, Sakura, T. Hawk or Dan. Though there are characters from Alpha all the way to Street Fighter III, we can't help but wish we could fill in our own vote. Anyway, what are you still reading this for? Capcom's blog has posted some art from the earlier anime trailer -- it includes old favorites like Ryu, Ken, and Akuma (Gouki). Gouken is also shown here, described as the master of Ryu and Ken, and the older brother of Akuma, though we are not sure if it is a literal brother or something else. Finally, Capcom teases about animation that will feature Chun-Li around July 24th. Take a look at all the pictures here.[Via Kotaku -- thanks, Danny!]

We have a very clear memory of watching the video we've linked to during Captivate 08 and wishing only that we could bring it to you, the masses. Why? Well, for starters, it's lifted from Street Fighter IV, which we hear you, the masses, are pretty excited about. Second? It's absolutely gorgeous. Today we're able to share the clip with you, so you may now "feel the drama," as they say, between Ryu and Akuma. What's better is that we heard that the home version of the game would be chock-full of anime clips like these, one for each character, which may be enough to pique the interest of even the non-fighting faithful.
