Capcom has made sure-you-can (get it?) watch the 72-minute Street Fighter documentary, I Am Street Fighter: 25 Years of Inspiration, with YouTube's first non-pirated copy uploaded to the Street Fighter YouTube page. The documentary, created by Area 5 and originally released as part of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector's Set, explores the creation, history and fandom of the Street Fighter series, and features series producer Yoshinori Ono and former Capcom community manager Seth Killian. If you were sad to miss out on the 25th Anniversary Collector's Set of the game, or just wanted to see why the Street Fighter series has had such a lasting impact on the world of gaming, check it out. Just make sure to grab some popcorn and sit somewhere comfy, because you're gonna be there for awhile.

  • Seen@Gamescom: Ono! Blanka crashes Capcom press conference

Yoshinori Ono really is the face (and hair, and skin) of the Street Fighter franchise. Ono showed up at Capcom's Gamescom conference dressed as Blanka and carrying a cake celebrating Street Fighter's 25th anniversary. Throughout his appearance, Ono joked that he wanted to show off Street Fighter 5, pointing at the screen excitedly but getting shot down by less colorful Capcom gatekeepers.

  • Yoshinori Ono on resurrecting Street Fighter, says 'there's no mercy' at Capcom

Yoshinori Ono is more than the Blanka-toting, smiling face of the Street Fighter series – he's its savior. After Street Fighter III: Third Strike in 1999, Capcom was all too happy to abandon the series, which had seen flagging sales. And Ono always felt responsible for having some hand in its demise, having worked on the last game in the series. He held onto that guilt for years, and after being promoted to the role of producer, pitched a design document for Street Fighter IV. "I was working on Onimusha 4 and during that time I repeatedly submitted my proposal for a new Street Fighter," he told Eurogamer. "The company kept telling me: 'It's a dead franchise. It doesn't make any money. We have series that make money like Resident Evil and Onimusha. Why bother with a dead franchise?'""Eventually I was given a small budget to create a prototype," Ono revealed. But it wasn't a result of his "pestering" the management that eventually brought the game to fruition – the journalists and fans "started making a lot of noise and pressuring Capcom," even though Ono admitted he told them to do that. "Journalists and fans have the power to move Capcom - not producers. With so many voices crying out for a Street Fighter game Capcom could no longer ignore it any more and so they gave the green light for a prototype and they asked me to create it. It's a miracle that happened after a decade..."But as romantic as all of this is, Ono's account of work-life at Capcom is anything but. After taking a step back from the Street Fighter spotlight following a health scare, Ono spoke candidly about his employer – one he accuses of overworking him and failing to recognize his health woes related to overworking."Nobody told me to take a rest. When I returned to work, Capcom didn't even acknowledge that I had been in hospital. There was no change in my schedule. I was at home for an entire week before the doctors allowed me to return to work. When I returned to my desk there was a ticket to Rome waiting for me. There's no mercy. Everyone in the company says: 'Ono-san we've been so worried about you.' Then they hand me a timetable and it's completely filled with things to do."Ono recalled a previous project in his first days at Capcom, when he had a short timetable to retrofit the soundtrack for Street Fighter Alpha to be compatible with a less advanced arcade chipset. "Capcom was very good at squeezing people to the last drop of their blood to get work done."In regards to what's next, Ono isn't talking – but there's no way he'll leave fighting games behind. "There have been rumours saying Ono is dead or retiring. None of that's true. I want to support the next generation of fighting game. It's my job. It's my calling."

Capcom is pretty bad at planning surprise parties. The first rule it's broken is "Don't put your plans on a big-time gaming blog" and the second is "Don't spoil the theme." Ryu is going to be so suspicious. Regardless, Capcom is celebrating Street Fighter's 25th anniversary – which lands on August 30 – with a call for fan art and remixes, to potentially be used in some sort of official capacity.Capcom urges submissions to include the "anniversary" theme in a recognizable way, with "reflection and nostalgia" as main points, community manager Brett Elston writes on the Capcom-Unity blog. The full rules for art submissions are here, and the musical notes can be found here. The deadline for both contests is May 4, 11:59 p.m. PST.

  • Asura takes his Wrath out on Ryu in upcoming DLC

Asura's Wrath is an anime-inspired take on Buddhist stories, but some new DLC announced in Japan will add a legendary character from another tradition. A single screen of new DLC released by Capcom shows Asura facing off against a distinctly Street Fighter IV-looking Ryu, complete with SFIV-style HUD elements and the traditional side view. Even the background imitates a familiar Street Fighter backdrop while simultaneously making sense in Asura's world.Capcom didn't offer any more details about the DLC beyond that one screenshot -- no date, no price, nothing. But that teaser is enough to guarantee we'll be paying attention.

  • Street Fighter IV coming to Android, exclusive to LG (at first)

In what basically amounts to a 3-hit news shoryuken, LG and Capcom have announced that a mobile version of Street Fighter IV will fight its way onto Google's Android OS sometime in Q4 (Hit 1), and that the title will be exclusive to an upcoming LG smartphone (Hit 2), but only for the first three months (KO!). No pricing or release information has been given beyond the Q4 window, and LG has yet to announce which of its smartphones will receive the title. The press release refers to the manufacturer's "first HD Android smartphone," however, pegging the LU6200 as the prime suspect. No word on whether or not this is a direct port of the iOS version of Street Fighter IV, but the LU6200's slate form factor would easily facilitate the title. Once we know more about Street Fighter IV's system requirements, we'll have a better idea of which phones will be able to run the fighter once the exclusivity agreement has run its course. For now though, all we can do is cross our fingers and think button-y thoughts.

  • Capcom puts apps on sale, releases new characters for Street Fighter IV

Capcom has introduced two new characters to the iOS version of Street Fighter IV (subtitled Volt), so fighters now can jump into the ring with Yun and Fei Long, making the character total on the game an impressive 22. The company has also dropped the price. It's usually $6.99, but until next week, it'll be available for $2.99, so grab it if you haven't yet. The company also has released a new iOS title called Street Fighter Collection, which includes three editions of Street Fighter II: the original, champion and the hyper-fighting edition. You may have already bought these through Capcom Arcade, but this is a standalone version outside of Capcom's big meta-app. And finally, the standalone version of Final Fight (also included in Capcom Arcade) is on sale for 99 cents. There's no real reason for that one, apparently Capcom just wanted to offer up one of its games for a buck. We'll take it!

Street fighting is serious business, but even the single-minded Ryu can't be serious all the time. This is especially true when he's made out of vinyl and absolutely adorable. Just look at Dhalsim and his cute little Yoga Fire! Standing at 3 inches tall, all twelve of the original Street Fighter 2 characters are represented in the Kidrobot collection, including some alternate costume colors. You can check out more images at the Kidrobot website. While you're there, see if you can avoid hitting that big, friendly "buy" button.

Dubbed "ThunderHawk Studios," this new team is already hard at work on a title slated for next year. The formation of ThunderHawk Studios is an important milestone as we pursue our longer term goal of expanding our participation in developing, publishing and distributing games." Mad Catz is well-known for developing gaming peripherals and other interface hardware for titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Street Fighter IV.

  • Capcom and Sega join Valentine's Day sales on the App Store

    by
    Mike Schramm

    02.10.2011

Two more big companies have joined the flurry of sales popping up around Valentine's Day next week. Sega has jumped in with prices dropped on plenty of its titles, from US$2.99 down to 99 cents. Capcom has also joined the holiday celebration, bringing Street Fighter IV down to the incredibly low price of just 99 cents. As crazy as these deals are (and they are crazy, even though we saw lots of them in one form or another over the holiday season last December), I expect even more to show up by the end of this week. You don't have to look far to see why this is happening. EA led the charge with a huge 99 cent sale last quarter, and as a result, it showed record numbers both in terms of sales and profits. Both larger and indie game developers have seen that trend happen, so they seem to be forming a consensus of how to make big money on Apple's App Store. First, release premium games at a premium price, usually $9.99, especially when extremely popular franchises are ported over. Then drop the bottom out of the prices once that initial audience has sold through -- and when a new audience appears, like the Verizon iPhone owners this weekend -- conquering the charts and rocketing the numbers. We'll have to see how well that works over this weekend. Back during the last holiday sales, EA was pretty much on its own, and other developers had to catch up. This weekend, more companies are on top of the price drops; as a result, we might see fewer sales per company. But as always, it's an experiment, and when sales drop like this, we customers end up getting great games for super cheap.

  • Kinect combos Street Fighter IV, fires single-fisted boomsticks at the FPS crowd (video)

Oh sure, we've seen the Kinect assist a hadouken or two, but that wasn't the same: here, the YouTube user who brought us Call of Duty via Wiimote, Nunchuk and Kinect is throwing fireballs and taking names in the real game. Demize2010 manipulated the FAAST emulator to recognize a variety of virtual martial arts gestures, including the infamous dragon uppercut and whirlwind kick -- giving him everything he needs for a flowchart victory with only his bare hands. Meanwhile, one Bill Maxwell has taken the Kinect and made it recognize his fist, the better to control first-person shooter games with requiring an Wiimote intermediary. He's developed a "high-speed kinematic tracker" called MaxFPS that monitors his hand's position in real time, allowing him to move, turn, jump, and reload with quick swipes of his paw. How do you shoot? Why, by punching those baddies' lights out, of course. See it on video after the break.

  • Kinect Hacks: Street Fighter IV gone gestural

Previously, Elliott Woods used Kinect to (sort of) bring the hadouken into the real world. Now, modder "demize2010" has gone the other way, bringing gesture controls into Street Fighter IV. Using Kinect and the FAAST software, he's mapped Ryu and Ken's moves to specific gestures, so that the game character punches when he punches, throws a fireball when he pantomimes throwing a fireball, and so on. Basically, it's what we all thought the Sega Activator would be. If you'd like to try it out yourself -- and you have a copy of Street Fighter IV for PC, of course -- you can find a file with the specific key bindings on the Kinect Hacks site.

Immediately following its big 3DS price and release date unveiling, Nintendo had on hand dozens of new titles playing on what we'd surmise is final hardware (or at least near-final, given its February 27th Japanese launch). Our first hands-on experience was just over six months ago during E3, at which point we were very impressed with what we saw. Did this playthrough garner the same excitement? Have our decidedly older but not much wiser selves become jaded by the novelty of it all? Venture on after the break to find out. %Gallery-114669% %Gallery-114714%

  • Pick up a FightStick and Street Fighter 4 for $29

    11.17.2010

Well, this is most definitely the best deal on a Mad Catz FightStick we've ever seen -- we're tempted to predict it's the best deal we ever will see. Walmart.com is selling the standard edition FightStick, along with a copy of Street Fighter IV, for just $29. Even if you already have an arcade stick, don't you need one for a second player? Or to experiment with modding? As for that Street Fighter IV, you probably already have it (or even Super SFIV) if you're shopping for arcade sticks, but who cares? Trade it in or give it away. The FightStick itself usually sells for much more than that -- even at Walmart. [Thanks, Joe]

The next update for the iPhone version of Street FIghter IV adds at least one new fighter: Sagat. One of the screenshots included with the update also shows Dee Jay, who, curiously, wasn't announced. Tiger uppercuts and MAXIMUM pants aren't the only new additions to the phone fighter, however: the update also adds a new feature that sounds like it's straight out of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. You'll be able to turn on a new mode that searches for nearby players while you're in single-player, allowing them to challenge you to matches even while you're playing solo. You'll also be able to exchange "player cards," should you happen upon someone else who not only has Street Fighter IV for iPhone, but is playing it right then.

  • Dead Rising Mobile, Capcom virtual arcade coming to iPhone

Capcom's not looking to break its habit of scrunching down its popular franchises for use on the iPhone, it seems. Capcom Japan today outlined its mobile gaming plans for the near future -- plans which include the winter release of Dead Rising Mobile and "Capcom Arcade," a storefront which will host an expanding library of the developer's classic titles. Dead Rising Mobile will be a 3D action game in the vein of the series' console iterations with some form of Facebook and Twitter functionality. Capcom Arcade, much like the Xbox Live Game Room, will host a number of virtual arcade cabinets that require purchased "tokens" to play. Alternatively, permanent access to each game can be had for a larger, one-time fee. The Arcade service will launch before Dead Rising Mobile and will feature Street Fighter II, Ghouls'n Ghosts, 1942 and Commando. Finally, Capcom is also planning another update for the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV in mid-to-late November. The update will include a new challenger (following the last update's introduction of E. Honda and C. Viper), in addition to a handful of new networking options. We can't wait to see which brawler we can put our thumbs on next! That ... didn't sound good.

  • Capcom expecting better sales for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 than Street Fighter 4

Some may think of pitting the two worlds of Marvel and Capcom against one another as the ultimate cage match -- but have you considered what the match-up of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 against Street Fighter 4 might look like? Capcom's Christian Svensson recently told EventHubs that he expects the former to outsell the latter, thanks to the recognizable characters lent by Marvel, as well as "a more accessible but still deep fighting system that's fun for casual players and EVO attendees." Svensson added that he expects extremely strong sales for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 thanks to the fact that it "has been by far, our most requested sequel title in my tenure here at Capcom." Obviously, we need to look into recruiting more outspoken members for our Little Nemo: The Dream Master fan club.
