  • Europe: this week looks ... Dangeresque

Europeans: it looks like you're going to have to jump ... over to the Wii Shop on Friday, in order to download Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective, the penultimate episode of Strong Bad's Etc. According to a press email, and this forum post by Telltale's Emily Morganti, Nintendo sent the company a notice that the adventure game would hit the PAL WiiWare service this week. Obviously, this is good news because Dangeresque 3 is a game we loved, and we're happy that you'll get to share in the experience sooner or later. But more importantly, we're thrilled because this release announcement gives us an excuse to link to the browser-based Dangeresque Roomisode 1: Behind the Dangerdesque!, which is a breathtakingly pixel-perfect tribute to vintage adventure games.%Gallery-36634%

Four new WiiWare titles came down the tubes in Europe and Australia today, and the selection couldn't be more diverse. Art Style: Cubello and Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands you'll already know about, but CueSports and Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam are more mysterious beasts. The former looks promising, the latter, er, not particularly great, according to the few reviews that are about.Art Style: Cubello -- WiiWare -- 600 Wii PointsCueSports -- Snooker vs. Billiards -- WiiWare -- 800 Wii PointsStrong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii PointsYummy Yummy Cooking Jam -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii PointsFootage of all these is past! • Strong Bad plays dangeresque target toss on WiiWare

This week's WiiWare titles serve as a great example of the best and worst that the service has to offer. Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 (Telltale Games, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points): Don't be confused by the subtitle, you didn't miss Dangeresque 1 and 2. After three Strong Bad episodes, you know what to expect. This time, dying is not on the menu ... again. Dangeresque 3 was originally set to debut June 2004 in 3D but was delayed for unspecified reasons. Target Toss Pro: Bags (Incredible Technologies, 1-16 players, 700 Wii Points): It's no (Beer) Pong Toss, but paying $7 for a game simulating the tossing of a bean bag (known formerly as Cornhole in parts of the country) is a bit ridiculous, especially when the price of building your own Cornhole game is considerably less. Just because there's some real-life arm swinging involved doesn't mean you can tack on a Wii remote and charge for it. Gallery: Strong Bad Episode 4 - Dangeresque 3

Following the first, second, and third installments in SBCG4AP, I found myself wondering if the fourth episode could keep the pace of the first three. And it's pretty evident in the first few moments of the game that this is another episode that is setting the bar for humor a bit higher. Frankly, they gave me the whole tub of popcorn, but I only needed the edge.%Gallery-36634%

  • Trogdor burninating the final Strong Bad episode

Look at all that majesty. Telltale sent a screen to Wired of the fifth episode of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, featuring what may be the beefy-armiest sight yet for the downloadable episodic adventure game series: TROGDOR! Defying all known limits of the awesomeness that can be safely produced by a video game system, this image seems to show Trogdor the Burninator, who was a man -- I mean, he was a dragon-man ... or maybe he was just a dragon ... taking a starring role in Strong Bad Episode 5. What a way to end the series.

Having gone through the first three episodes of SBCG4AP now and having thoroughly enjoyed them, we were thinking about other episodic games out there. There's LostWinds and its near-promised second installment. There's Penny Arcade Adventures, Sam and Max (which we received all on one disc), and those Half-Life episodes, just to name a few.Are you a fan of episodic gaming? Have you taken the plunge, either through WiiWare, Steam, or the services of those other guys? Do you favor a smaller, more regimented gaming experience for less coin than the ticket price for a AAA title on the retail shelf? Thoughts?

We've been waiting for the third installment of SBCG4AP for a little while now, jonesing for a new episode after thoroughly enjoying the first two. For myself, this third episode is my favorite, as the combination of a "band off," and what I found to be the best writing in the series so far, have come together and dropped hot, delicious gaming action all over my face. Grab your leopard print pants and Squealin' Larry Limozeen Microphone and head past the break for the full review. Well all right!%Gallery-33956%

If not, you're probably better off starting at episode one. Art Style: ROTOHEX (Nintendo, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): Another entrant from the Japanese bit generations collection. Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People is in its third episode, getting cooler as they go; therefore we expect the people which it is for to be more attractive. The latest episode, Baddest of the Bands, features Strong Bad trying to earn some money by putting together a band and entering them in a competition. However, with a band composed of Homsar and the KOT, he's not likely to become a hundredaire any time soon. After the break, in case you missed it (we did!) the introductory trailer for this episode. We're going to be sad when we don't have a new episode of Strong Bad to look forward to. %Gallery-33956%

Mega Man 9 -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii Points Helix -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii Points Strong Bad Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii Points Helix is a dance-cum-exercise game from Ghostfire which was deemed above-average by critics, if not exactly essential. Strong Bad Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free falls into the same trap as Super Dodge Ball did in North America, in that it's a great, worthwhile title that was regrettably released the same week as Mega Man 9. • Strong Bad returns to WiiWare with Potpourrii

While the weekly update to WiiWare normally presents opportunity, this week it's more notable for what you won't be doing. The first thing that's off-limits? Trying to handle Strong Bad's style. The malicious, masked midget returns this week with Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free (Telltale Games, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points). The other thing you won't be doing? Having any inkling of what Potpourrii (Abstraction Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points) is. Here, from its (unedited) description in the official Nintendo release: "For centuries, the seasons have followed a set pattern. But then things start to go awry in the forest. Suddenly it's snowing while the sun shines and flowers bloom while leaves are falling. Then a strange purple goo appears. The leprechauns are stunned. Even worse, the magic oak of life loses its power. It all turns out to be the fault of an evil wizard."Later, it mentions the word "puzzle," but our reading comprehension abilities were already torn asunder at that point. If you can handle it, check out an ad for the game after the break.

[Update: we've just learned that the game is scheduled for this Monday!]Strong Badia The Free, the second episode of Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, is expected this month, and Telltale is preparing us to come to the coolest place I know. Where, it would seem, a revolution against the tyrannical, swimming-pool-full-of-gelatin-eating King of Town is brewing. In the screens, we can see that most of Free Country USA is united against the KOT, even The Cheat and Marzipan. They appear to be ready to burn the butter-loving monarch in effigy. But it isn't all bad -- The Cheat appears poised to throw the real rave he's always deserved, instead of just a lightswitch rave.Population: Ti-i-i-iiiiiiire!%Gallery-31738%[Via press release]

  • Joystiq talks with Telltale about Wii and the future

    08.31.2008

No, they aren't predicting the apocalypse or anything, but their future on the Wii seems almost certain. When asked if SBCG4AP sold more on the PC or Wii, they were quick to note that performance on Nintendo's system beat the PC. How was it to work with Nintendo? "Working with Nintendo's been pretty good," commented designer Mark Darin. "All the help that Nintendo's been giving us and allowing us the opportunity to be on WiiWare has been great for our company and great for getting titles like SBCG4AP out there to a new audience who maybe isn't used to Adventure games. It's been a great partnership with Nintendo so far." Telltale also goes on to talk about the system's hardware and what challenges that presented, as well as Sam & Max on the console. So be sure to read the full interview over at Joystiq.

Telltale has just sent out a press release, which was chock full of screens for the next episode of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. Enjoy it?%Gallery-30447% Strong Bad's Game for Attractive People isn't the only notable WiiWare title. Capcom's upcoming Mega Man 9 has managed to turn a few heads (and might have even gotten other companies to think about retro revivals). There's also the upcoming Tetris Party and Alien Crush Returns, both from Hudson. Oh, and let's not forget Space Invaders Get Even!
