  • Tomodachi Life stage lets you live inside Super Smash Bros.

Look, we all love fighting each other on top of Castle Hyrule and amongst the bricks of the Mushroom Kingdom in the Super Smash Bros. games. But sometimes, you just gotta step outside your comfort zone and try something new. Something like the Tomodachi Life-inspired stage for Super Smash Bros. coming to 3DS this October, perhaps. Game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed today that Super Smash Bros. for 3DS - and only the 3DS version - will feature a stage based on the recently-released Tomodachi Life. What's more, it will pull the Mii data from your 3DS so that when you come crashing through an apartment, it could be you or your friends' place you see. Sakurai also noted that the placement of rooms will be randomized, and that there are several different types of rooms for the game to choose from. While initially it looks as though areas of the level are closed off, walls will fade away when a fighter occupies the room it hides. Sakurai hinted that placing a bomb in an apartment might be a good idea, which is a great example of a thought that would be utterly terrifying if it weren't about a video game. [Image: Nintendo]

Nintendo is going all-out with its plans for Super Smash Bros at San Diego Comic-Con. The company already announced a tournament and a live show, but it's now adding "Bring Me Smash" to the mix. Using a sophisticated mix of digital technology and analog human power, the publisher will bring the game directly to attendees. "When a notice goes out through Nintendo's Twitter account, fans will be able to tweet their location to Nintendo for a chance to have a roaming group of Nintendo employees show up with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS for a brief hands-on session," a company representative explained.

No need to worry about percentages, this news is 100% true: Nintendo's just revealed Lucina and Robin from Fire Emblem: Awakening are in the Super Smash Bros. roster, along with the familiar returning face of good ol' Captain Falcon. If you're wondering who Robin is, that's the default name for your playable avatar in Fire Emblem: Awakening. As per the 3DS tactics RPG, you can play as either the male or female Robin in Super Smash Bros.

Though Mario now spends his days jumping on turtles and racing go-karts throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, he's a boy from Brooklyn, and this latest Super Smash Bros. costume demonstrates his patriotic spirit. Unveiled by the Japanese Super Smash Bros. Twitter account, the above costume is a Yankee Doodle homage to the duds Mario is seen wearing on the cover of classic 8-bit golf game NES Open Tournament Golf. Though that is a wildly esoteric reference, it provides a nice contrast to Mario's staid red and blue overalls. Why this image is appearing now and not, say, six days ago is a mystery. Conan O'Brien may have not been the only clueless gamer at E3, but the TV star's take on gaming's annual LA-palooza is always worth a watch. After talking and playing Entwined, Forza 5, Sunset Overdrive, Project Morpheus and Kevin Spacey In Your Face, things get a bit creepy when 100 Nintendo ladies watch Conan firestorm Hyrule Warriors. There's more Clueless Gamer below the break with Conan playing Super Smash Bros Wii U.

Had you been on the floor of the Los Angeles Convention Center this year, you would have heard one question, echoing from journalist to journalist: "This year feels a little ... weird, don't you think?" It's hard to put a finger on exactly why E3 2014 gave off a strange vibe, but darn it all, we're gonna try. Here are some of the most eccentric, the most peculiar, most "hmm"-inducing stories of E3:

  • Co-Opinion: Super Smash Bros. (Wii U)

This is Co-Opinion, where two Joystiq editors play a game and discuss their experience. This edition focuses on an E3 2014 hands-on session of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, by Nintendo. .portal-left { padding: 10px; background: #CCC; margin: 20px 0; min-height: 85px; } .portal-right { padding: 10px; margin: 20px 0; min-height: 85px; } .portal-right img { padding-left: 5px; } .portal-left img { padding-right: 5px; } Mike Suszek: Sam and I took a moment to throw down in a few matches of Super Smash Bros. on Wii U at E3. Let's get this out of the way: It's definitely still Smash Bros. The controls aren't wildly different from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the four-player action is still chaotic and I still manage to miss out on every Pokeball that appears. Sam Prell: Being "more Smash Bros." isn't necessarily bad, though. Fighting games aren't often torn down and rebuilt from the ground up - they're tweaked and tightened. Sometimes a surprise feature or two can sneak their way in and shake things up, though. I'm still not sure about how I feel about the addition of the Smash Ball in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, even six years after the fact. Based on our - admittedly short - time with the game this week though, I don't think we'll see a shift quite as dramatic as the one between Brawl and Melee.

  • Super Smash Bros lets you customize special moves, transfer characters between Wii U and 3DS

Super Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS will allow players to customize their favorite fighter's special moves. Each character will still have four special moves, each with two variations, allowing for a total of 12 possible moves. For example, Mario's fireball might fly quickly in a straight line, or cause multiple hits, or it might bounce along the ground as it always has. The news comes from a Smash Bros event at E3 2014, hosted by series creator Masahiro Sakurai. He pointed out (though an interpreter), that these customized moves will not be available when playing the "with anyone" mode, but you can use them when playing the "with friends" mode. Furthermore, custom characters can be transferred between the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. When asked how that process would work, Sakurai told Joystiq that we'd have to wait for the Wii U release to find out. Players will also be able to give their players "equipment" which alters certain statistics, like speed. Different characters will be able to hold different amounts of equipment, said Sakurai, noting that larger characters can hold more equipment, while lighter, more agile characters can't carry as much, to compensate for their other advantages.

  • Nintendo's Amiibo figurines explained, smashing retail this holiday season

Nintendo issued a trailer explaining the Amiibo figures it revealed during its E3 2014 livestream today. In the first Amiibo-compatible game, Super Smash Bros., players set the figures on their Wii U to bring their respective characters into the game to do battle with both other figures and human opponents. With each battle, the figures level up their attack, speed and defense powers. Players will also be able to customize their figure's special powers over time. The first series of roughly ten NFC figures will debut with the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. this holiday season. Among the games Nintendo confirmed Amiibo compatibility with are Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi's Wooly World, with more to come. The company is also planning a NFC reader/writer device for 3DS, scheduled to arrive in 2015. [Image: Nintendo]

During Nintendo's E3 2014 Digital Event, the company announced that the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros will be released on October 3 in both North America and Europe. Nintendo also showed off Skylanders-like tech that will allow players to scan toy figurines called Amiibo into the Wii U version of the game. Update: The 3DS version of Super Smash Bros will run $39.99. The Wii U version, unsurprisingly, will retail for $59.99.

Super Smash Bros. on Wii U will include support for NFC (near-field communication) figurines called "Amiibo," as Nintendo demonstrated during its E3 2014 livestream today. Additionally, players will be able to bring their Mii characters into battle, lending their likeness to their fights. Mii fighters are divided into three classes: Mii gunner, Mii brawler and Mii sword-fighter. They will also get to pick four special moves among 12 different options. As for the NFC figures, the Skylanders-esque physical toys will summon characters to the battlefield and enhance your fighter. Nintendo noted that Amiibo will interact with multiple games, including the previously-released Mario Kart 8. [Image: Nintendo]

  • Super Smash Bros community battles for respect at E3

The announcement of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Wii U invitational – an "homage to the Smash Bros community" – is maybe the closest thing Nintendo fans will get to a sequel to the 1989 Fred Savage vehicle, The Wizard. Like the film, Nintendo's tournament gives video game fanatics a chance to be among the first to ever play an unreleased game for prizes and bragging rights. Nintendo's tournament, which will take place during the week of E3 on June 10 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, further extends an olive branch from the company to fans. In 2013, the company requested the gaming tournament competition EVO pull Super Smash Bros. Melee from its streaming roster before quickly recanting that request after a fan uprising on social media channels. Nintendo and EVO have since announced Smash Bros. will be a featured franchise during its 2014 competition. In a subsequent announcement to the new tournament, Nintendo revealed the roster of Smash players that had been invited to the tournament, which has surprised those deeply entrenched in the franchise's fighting game community.

An officially licensed adapter will allow Super Smash Bros. Melee veterans to play the upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. with GameCube controllers, Nintendo announced today. The peripheral allows players to connect up to four GameCube controllers to the Wii U via a USB dongle. Nintendo has not announced whether WaveBird wireless controllers are supported, or if GameCube controller support is planned for other Wii U games. Smash Bros. brawlers have plenty of input options to choose from, including Nintendo's own Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Classic Controllers, and PDP's upcoming Wired Fight Pad. Nintendo has partnered with electronics retailer Best Buy to present a series of in-store demos for the upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. next month at select locations nationwide. Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros. Smash-Fest" will be held at more than 100 Best Buy locations on June 11 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. and June 14 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. local time, giving players a chance to compete in four-person local multiplayer battles. A full list of participating stores is available at Best Buy's website. The event follows up on a similar E3 showcase from last year that gave Best Buy customers an early look at Mario Kart 8. The first 70 attendees who pre-order the 3DS or Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. at each event will receive a limited-edition gold coin collectible, in addition to a $5 Rewards Zone certificate upon the game's release. Super Smash Bros. will launch for the Nintendo 3DS this summer, and the Wii U edition will hit retail in the winter. [Image: Nintendo / Best Buy]

Do you want to take on the challengers of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with a sense of fa-melee-iarity? Good news: third-party accessory manufacturer PDP is working with Nintendo to produce the Wired Fight Pad, a controller designed after the original, fan-favorite GameCube controller. The Wired Fight Pad will connect via a Wii Remote's bottom port, so you'll already need to own said Remote to use the Fight Pad. The good news is, that means it's also compatible with the Wii. The Wired Fight Pad will work with any of that system's games that support the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. The Wired Fight Pad is set to release alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with an estimated price of $24.99. We've been told to expect Smash sometime this winter. [Image: Nintendo]

Unlike a live stage presentation from Nintendo, The Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament will take place in the Nokia Theater during E3. Up to 3,000 fans will be allowed to watch the brawls unfold in the upcoming Super Smash Bros., so the event is bound to have some energy to it. If you're eager to prove your Smash-based skill set and still haven't received your invitation, there's hope for you in the form of Instagram: Nintendo will fly the victor of its "People's Challenger" contest and a guest to E3, with the People's Challenger winning the right to duke it out with one of the Invitational's champions. People's Challenger entrants must convince Nintendo that they're worthy of the opportunity in a video under 15 seconds in length. We suggest you check out the full details before starting on your entry though, as one of the general guidelines advises against even pretending to harm others. That masterful, intense bout of choreographed fisticuffs you were daydreaming about is probably out, then. Judges will pick a winner based on three aspects: how well a video displays an entrant's enthusiasm, demonstrated creativity and the entry's overall artistic quality. Nintendo will accept entries until 10 AM PT on May 27, all of which must follow the title format of "My name is <FIRST NAME> and this is my submission for the Super Smash Bros. People's Challenger Contest. #SmashChallengerApproaching #NintendoContestEntry." Entrants must live in the United States or Canada (except for you, Quebec) and must be 18 or above their state or province's age of majority. Even if you get rocked by the Invitational champ, at least you'll have two three-day passes for the E3 show floor. No more living vicariously through E3 attendees for you! [Image: Nintendo]

  • Super Smash Bros. to use NFC tech, says Nintendo France exec

    05.23.2014

Super Smash Bros. uses the Wii U's near-field communication technology, if comments by Nintendo France MD Stephan Bole are accurate. Following the company's unveiling of NFC figurines, Bole told Le Figaro the tech features in the console version of the new fighter. "E3 will be an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology on Nintendo consoles," Bole said (via Polygon). "NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros." Apart from the sense it makes given the huge roster of Nintendo's fighter, the comments are in line with what the company said earlier this month. President Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo will showcase the Skylanders-like tech at next month's E3 conference, along with compatible games. Furthermore, Nintendo plans to launch the figurines by the end of this year, and Super Smash Bros. is due to hit Wii U this winter. What today's news does raise is the question of the 3DS Super Smash Bros, which is out this summer; Nintendo will release a NFC reader and writer for the handheld in the first half of 2015. Bole's comments coincide with the unveiling of another returning Smash character, with Fire Emblem's Ike joining the burgeoning cast today - just in case you thought the House of Mario was done with the conveyor belt of reveals. The beefier-looking swordsman joins 29 other combatants already revealed for the upcoming brawler. [Image: Nintendo]

Nintendo is inviting 3000 fans to watch its Super Smash Bros. E3 invitational tournament live in Los Angeles next month. The event features mascot melee on Wii U between 16 select players, and while it is being live-streamed on Twitch, you can watch it in the flesh as long as you're prepared to get up early and wait a good long while. Starting at 9:30AM on June 10, Nintendo is distributing 3000 wristbands from the Nokia Plaza at 777 Chick Hearn Court on a first-come first-served basis. That said, Nintendo requests no queues before Tuesday morning so there's no need to pack those sleeping bags. Then it's a wait until the afternoon with doors opening at 2:30PM and the tournament kicking off at 4PM.

Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai revealed today that players will be able to choose among several playable Animal Crossing villagers in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, including multiple female characters. Today's roster addition is one of several female character options introduced in the latest Super Smash Bros. series entry. Nintendo previously announced that players will be able to play as both male and female Wii Fit Trainers, and Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina also made the cut recently. Super Smash Bros. will launch for the Nintendo 3DS this summer, and a Wii U release will follow in the winter. [Image: Nintendo]
