Oscar night! It's a big day for the movie industry, including Steve Jobs's Pixar protege John Lasseter; he's got his fingers in two nominated animated features this year (Brave and Wreck-It Ralph). Our weekly chat festival may not be up for any awards this year, but there's only one award that matters: your enjoyment of the show. We'll go over the week in all things Apple, and we'll do it with style. Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (Viva free weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free X-Lite or other SIP clients (aside from Skype or Google Voice), basic instructions are here. It's the Sunday after Valentine's day, and it's time once again to feel the love of fellow Apple fans by joining a bunch of them on the TUAW talkcast! Regardless of your political leanings, it was nice to see Tim Cook at the SOTU, and even nicer to hear the shoutout he got from the President for "insourcing" plans for one of Apple's product lines. Tim didn't even have to make a special trip to the east coast; he was already in New York to speak at the Goldman Sachs investor conference. We'll also be discussing the other news of the week, and what have you. Kelly hosting means aftershow, so do try to come by if you can! Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. The annual flurry of chocolate, flowers and crowded restaurants is only a few days away! Valentine's Day is this coming Thursday, so tonight we'll talk Apple-themed romance. How can you charm and celebrate the beloved geek in your life? Then again, if you are the Mac geek in your relationship, how can you amp up the love factor this week? Bring your ideas, destinations, apps and gifts to the show tonight. We'll also preview a bit of our Toy Fair coverage, rolling out the rest of this week. And, as usual, we'll review the news of the day and take your questions as we go. To participate live during the show, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, the best way to have your voice heard is to call in. (We're holding off on rolling in the Google+ Hangout experiment until we file off a few of the rough edges.) We came, we saw, we sang a little karaoke and met an adorable monkey. Macworld/iWorld 2013 is in the books, and this is the first chance we've had to breathe a little and take stock. Of course, the best way to do that is to counterprogram the blackout-delayed Super Bowl and host our regular weekly gabfest, the Talkcast! Mike R. is fighting off the "expo crud" and sends his regrets, but I'll be there with bells on and ready to go. We'd love to hear your impressions of the show if you were there; your distant takes if you weren't. Products you saw, heard about or shook your head in disbelief at? Let us know. To participate live during the show, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, the best way to have your voice heard is to call in. Wow, we've got a lot to talk about tonight. During the past week we saw Apple report record revenues, and the stock price promptly fell into the toilet. The annual Apple lovefest that is Macworld/iWorld starts on Thursday, with a hefty percentage of the TUAW staff making the pilgrimage to San Francisco. Twitter released a video tweet tool by the name of Vine, which is a lot of fun but may have some growing up to do. These and more topics will be fuel for discussion on the TUAW Talkcast tonight. Unlike last week, we won't be experimenting with a Google+ Hangout (although that was a lot of fun...). Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. • Talkcast tonight: Splicing in a G+ Hangout with our bare hands

    by

    01.20.2013

As fond as we are of Talkshoe round here, there are some challenges and limitations on the podcast platform. Listeners know we're casting about for some new solutions that will keep the fun and spontaneity of the Talkcast we know and love, while improving audio quality and reliability. Tonight, as we look ahead to Macworld | iWorld and Apple's upcoming earnings report, we're going to try something new. We'll be simulcasting the Talkcast as a Google+ Hangout, and hopefully also streaming it to our YouTube channel. There's a cap of 10 participants in the Hangout itself, but you'll be able to comment and contribute on the G+ page during the show as well as in the usual Talkshoe chat. It's a grand experiment, so bear with us if things go sideways -- that is, when things go sideways. I plan to start the Hangout at 9:30pm and get it solidified before we begin the regular audio side of things at 10pm ET. We may run into some audio looping issues, so if I have to mute the G+ side we'll do that and connect it in by phone. In any case, it's bound to be interesting; hope we'll hear and see you there. To participate live during the show (other than on the G+ side), you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, the best way to have your voice heard is to call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. It's Sunday again and that means it's time for another TUAW Talkcast! Tonight, I'll be hosting the show and our very own Mike Schramm is scheduled to join in on the call to provide his input on the high (and low) points of CES 2013. We'll want to hear your input on what sounded hot and what announcements were incredibly lame. Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you? It's the first Sunday of the new year! Now that holiday chaos is mostly over, it's time to settle back into normal routines, like five day work weeks and Sunday night Talkcasts. This week is the birthday edition, since we have the birthdays of not only our own Dave Caolo, but friend of the show Jeff Gamet too! We've got TUAW's own Best Of series to discuss, as well as the earnings call, not to mention resolutions, CES, and what have you. Kelly hosting means aftershow, and you know you've missed it, so be sure to swing by for all the fun! Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you? We've yet to land directly on New Year's Eve with a scheduled TUAW Talkcast; the most recent Sunday night NYE was in 2006, years before we started the show, and the next Sunday alignment with 12/31 isn't until 2017. (We should all come to see it in good health.) One day off is as close as we'll get, so tonight we'll celebrate with a) a year-in-review show, and b) BYO libations. Uncork some vino, pop some bubbly or pour yourself a beer! You're among friends here. If Apple fans were shopping for a CEO-worthy Christmas gift (really, what do you get for the man who can buy everything?), they can stand down now. He may not have taken the front cover, but Tim Cook's selection as a runner-up for Time Magazine's Person of the Year certainly will warm hearts and stockings over Cupertino way. In some ways it's best he wasn't selected over President Barack Obama; it would have made for a particularly awkward iPad mini ad. We've only got two days left before Christmas, and if you're still looking for gift ideas (sorry, iPad mini stock is all booked up) or just need an hour's break from kith and kin, we're here for you. We'll talk Tim Cook, holiday plans, and generally kick back and relax. It'll be fun. As mentioned on the show last week, we'll also be accepting entries into our Sci-Fi Holiday Carol contest; prizes will be awarded for both lyrical composition and performance. The best "Cylon Night, Holy Night" will get a snazzy iPhone 5 case from Speck, so warm up those vocal cords! The App Store featured a new offering this week: Google's much-anticipated native Google Maps app, bringing the full-featured navigation tool (first appearing in iPhone OS 1.1.3 back in January of 2008) back to the platform after iOS 6 replaced the original Maps app backed by Google's data with an all-Apple Maps app. We've spent some time with the new app, and we want to hear from all of you: are you switching, or sticking? Also of note today: Apple's launch of the iPhone 5 in China garnered two million units sold in the first three days. We'll take a quick look at the global market and discuss how Apple's holiday quarter is shaping up. The show is meant to be interactive -- so call in and interact! • TUAW Talkcast: Tim Cook's media day, Twitterrific new look

    12.09.2012

Last week NBC delivered a pretty big scoop: Tim Cook's first television interview since taking over the top spot at Apple. He also had an extensive interview/profile in Bloomberg BusinessWeek, where he went into a bit more depth on some of the same topics covered on TV. The interview with anchor Brian Williams on Rock Center may have provoked more questions than it answered (Which Macs will be manufactured in the States? What does "an area of intense interest" mean, anyway?), but it did provide a somewhat higher profile for the publicity-averse CEO. We'll dive into Cook's interview as topic #1 on tonight's Talkcast. Tim Cook's big debut -- unfortunately accompanied by a less-than-stellar week for Apple's stock -- wasn't the only announcement of note. The Iconfactory's killer Twitter app Twitterrific hit version 5.0, and our frequent guest Gedeon Maheux will join us to talk about the development process, the redesign, and what's changed in the universe of Twitter client apps since Twitter began to make things uncomfortable. The show is meant to be interactive -- so call in and interact! We're in that odd space in the holidays, between autumn and winter, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and between Apple product announcements. We're also missing our friendly hosting crew, Broadway sensation Mike Rose and Portland's finest, Ms. Kelly Guimont. That means that I'll be your nightmare happy host this evening for another hour of jolliness and frivolity, also known as the TUAW Talkcast. I'm not sure who will be joining me as a guest, but our probable topics for this evening include something called iTunes 11 (Do you love it? Hate it? Refuse to install it?), the new iMacs that are starting to show up in Apple Stores around the world, and anything else you To participate live during the show, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. The Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone, and with it the traditional Black Friday kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Savvy online shoppers know to wait, however, for the Cyber Monday rush of discounts and deals (apparently a lot of those shoppers are browsing from their iPads). We'll look ahead to tomorrow's frantic shopping time. Also tonight, we're welcoming special guests Jeff Gamet of the Mac Observer and Chris Foresman of Ars Technica. With these alpha geeks and the usual gang of ruffians, we'll consider the question: what are we thankful for this year as Apple fans, Mac users and iOS customers? Of course, we are thankful for all of you -- and we want to know what you're thankful for. We're back live tonight at 10 pm, and hopefully all of you are warm and dry. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, some of the geekery we usually cover has given way to more basic concerns. It's Sunday once again, and since Mike is busy battening down the tech hatches in anticipation of Sandy, tonight Kelly will be hosting. We'll have plenty to discuss, with not only an earnings call, but a media event as well, giving us loads of actual facts (iPad mini! New iMac! Retina 13" and a new Mac mini!) instead of just speculation. There's quite a bit to discuss, so hopefully we can cover everything in the hour we have. Since Kelly's hosting the show, that means there will be aftershow. It's worth holding out for, provided you don't have emergency prep for the Frankenstorm. It's Talkcast time again, and it's a doozy -- we're on the brink of a new product announcement and a quarterly earnings report, and that just gets us to Thursday. What will we see at Wednesday's announcement? Will there be pie? Plus a hands-on assessment of the current flagship in mini tablets (for the next few days, anyway), the Google/Asus Nexus 7, from the perspective of an iPad owner. It's going to be nothing but fun -- and better if you join us. Another Sunday, another talkcast! Kelly has finally managed to remain stationary in one place long enough to host the show again, so she'll be back tonight to talk about the upcoming MacTech Conference, last week's Mac Computer Expo, as well as some brief Passbook chat. Since it's Kelly, and we've had a yep, a visit to her House of Crackpot Theories is definitely in order. As usual, a Kelly show means aftershow, so be sure to show up for the never recorded post-tech talk which could possibly involve cake, car conversation, or none of those things at all. It's hard to nail down the aftershow. Now it's really all about you, the community, so join me won't you? Talk to you tonight!
