Tonight's Talkcast is all about you -- not that it isn't about you every week, but this week in particular. We welcome your calls, questions and comments at 10 pm ET, 7 pm PT tonight live on Talkshoe. Another quarter, another blowout. While analysts and pundits imagined that domestic iPhone sales would signal an end to the gravy train, international demand pushed the handset past the 35 million mark and shot AAPL back above the $600 line. Even with the iPad refresh hitting at the end of the quarter, Apple sold almost 12 million of the tablets to get to 67 million total sales in just two years on the market. Apple's developer conference, WWDC, opened up ticket sales this week -- and promptly closed them again a couple of hours later as the event sold out. Some ticket buyers who thought they were good to go found out otherwise when Apple's overzealous group ticket restrictions cancelled their valid orders. Meanwhile, The New York Times has been focusing on Apple as a proxy for all things large and corporate lately, and the beat goes on with today's feature story on how the company uses some... interesting tactics to minimize its tax liability in the US and abroad. We'll discuss the story, and consider whether or not slapping a lowercase "i" into a headline works in favor of -- or against -- solid business journalism. That's our rundown for tonight's Talkcast. We welcome your calls, questions and comments at 10 pm ET, 7 pm PT tonight live on Talkshoe. To participate in the call, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. What do you do when there's nothing really amazing going on in the world of Apple? You make the news! Rumors and speculation will be our fuel for tonight's episode of the TUAW Talkcast. This is my first Talkcast hosting stint in a while, so I've invited some amazing people who can hopefully generate tons of utter B.S. to make up for the lack of real news. Of course, we do have the Apple Q2 2012 earnings call coming up on Tuesday, so perhaps there's a chance to see if the Talkcast regulars can do a better job at forecasting Apple's revenues and earnings than professional Wall Street analysts can. Your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be. To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cellphone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. If you've got a headset or microphone handy (you know those headphones that came with your iPhone?), you can connect via the free Zoiper, X-Lite or Blink SIP clients; and basic instructions are here. Talk to you tonight!

Well well well, Sunday. It's that time again, Talkshoe time! It's also time for some nice new hardware speculation live from my house, and we'll talk a little bit about some real news this week as well, such as a preview of NAB and a quick episode of Where's Tim? Kelly hosting the show means Kelly hosting the aftershow, a lovely non-recorded conversation about whatever strikes our fancy. A lot of times it's cake, but sometimes we solve the world's problems as well. You just never know. Since it's really all about you, the community, join me won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. • Talkcast tonight, 10pm ET: Fighting Flashback

    by

    04.08.2012

As this holiday weekend draws to a close, the unfortunate fact is that we may be dealing with the largest Mac-centric botnet ever documented in the wild. While the Flashback trojan is easy to find and simple to prevent -- in fact, a stock Lion installation includes neither Java nor the Flash plugin, cutting down dramatically on the attack surface for malware of this kind -- there are still thousands of compromised Macs out there. Given the requirements of a Java installation to enable the trojan's exploit, it looks like a nontrivial number of infections have hit experienced Mac users. We recommend immediately updating your Java install with Apple's patch. You can test for the Flashback trojan using the standalone Terminal method or a simple utility -- and you can also install some free virus protection if you're so inclined. That's our topic for tonight's Talkcast, same as it was two weeks ago: Mac (and iOS) security. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. 04.01.2012

We meet again, Sunday. At least this one has been mildly entertaining in some respects (for example, the trimumphant return of the Apple Store Playset to ThinkGeek's front page and TUAW's honoring of Betteridge's Law for the day). While fun, it is not a joke that we'll be firing up the Talkcast starting at 7PM Pacific time, 10pm Eastern. We'll discuss App Stores for Mac OS and iOS; specifically the high points and low points of each. We'll also spend a bit of time on the Fair Labor Association report released this week. As usual, Kelly's hosting the show means there will be aftershow. Unlike the cake, the aftershow is NOT a lie. (Sometimes the aftershow has cake discussion as well, but that's another story.) Since it's really all about you, the community, join me won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. It's Sunday, and like a lot of Sundays, we'll be Talkcasting it up starting at 7PM Pacific time, 10pm Eastern. We'll discuss security instead of turning up our noses at the need. In fact, we will be chatting with George Starcher, since he just dropped all kinds of science about this very topic on the latest Typical Mac User podcast. We'll also talk about whatever else pops up during the course of the show. If you'd like to influence that, be sure to join us live using the instructions below. As usual, Kelly hosting the show means there will be aftershow. Bring your best recipes for cake or for saving the world, either way, you might need one or both for the aftershow. It's hard to say, really. Since it's really all about you, the community, join me won't you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. The green beer taps may have run dry, but that's no cause for despair: the TUAW Talkcast is here to soothe your headache and recommend you take it easier next year. Tonight, of course, we want to talk about the new iPad -- so if you've got one, come on over and flaunt it! We'll also review Friday's bombshell announcement from Ira Glass and This American Life that the show has retracted its January episode featuring excerpts from monologuist Mike Daisey's Apple-centric show. Several of the more dramatic stories included in the show turn out to be of questionable veracity. And, of course, we'll talk about the surprise financial call scheduled for tomorrow morning. We're also pleased to welcome a special guest this week, our friend and former TUAW contributor Christina Warren, now covering the entertainment world over at Mashable. Let me just say it right now: you all are not ready for this. Brace yourselves. It's Sunday, like it or not! If you are in a DST-observing area and remembered to "spring forward," then we'll be right on time for you tonight, 7PM Pacific time, 10pm Eastern. We'll finally be discussing the actual new iPad as opposed to speculating about it; we'll chat about the new updates available for iPhoto and iMovie, and who knows what else. We might even get some updates from SxSW and GDC. Per tradition, Kelly hosting the show means there will be aftershow. Which means...well, anything really, the aftershow has a tendency to wander. We come again to the end of the weekend, and it's time for another round of talkcasting. We will have a stack of speculation to get to, from new MacBook Pro rumors to impending new iPads. We'll cover other headlines of the week as well, but be warned most of the show will probably consist of theories, whether they're from my House (of Crackpot Theories) or not. We'll even have a little time for bonus rumormongering in the aftershow, if that's the sort of thing you enjoy. It's time again for the TUAW Talkcast! We'll be live on our usual TalkShoe meeting place, podcast fates and bandwidth permitting, starting at 10 pm Eastern time. This week, we're looking ahead to the Apple NYC event focusing on the world of education. Hitting the books could have a whole new meaning before the week is out; we'll be talking with our in-house experts on all things iBooks, the lovely and talented Steve Sande & Erica Sadun (co-proprietors of Sand Dune Books) to get a sense of what Apple might have hidden away in its backpack. We'll also run down the week's news out of the CES show in Las Vegas, where our tireless trio of correspondents did their level best to touch every iPad case and accessory on the floor. (Yes, they packed plenty of hand sanitizer.) As always, the show only gets better when we have you as a part of it! To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Blink, Zoiper or X-Lite SIP clients, and if you have SkypeOut credit you can use Skype to call. Snow Leopard Mac users and earlier can use the built-in VoIP connector in the TalkShoe client, but Lion users are out of luck (it requires Rosetta). Talk to you tonight!

  • Talkcast tonight 10pm ET: Reviewing the year that was

    12.18.2011

It's time again for the TUAW Talkcast! We'll be live on our usual TalkShoe meeting place, podcast fates and bandwidth permitting, starting at 10 pm Eastern time. Given the calendar alignment this year, with both Christmas and New Year's Eve falling on our normal Sunday chatterbox timeslot, this may be the final regularly-scheduled talkcast of 2011; I won't rule out a show on Christmas night, or one on a special day/time during the week of 12/26, but I think the 31st is pretty well booked up. That means we're going to take this week to reflect and share: we'll review the top ten stories of the year gone by (including the obvious and tragic #1), consider what we're thankful for (and what we could have done without), and go over our Santa-baby wishlists for Apple in 2012. We'll welcome some special guests from The Loop and TiPB, raise a glass of good cheer, and all that jazz. As always, the show only gets better when we have you as a part of it! To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines: dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. We'll get started as usual around 10pm ET, which is 7pm PT.

It's Sunday once again and this can mean only one thing: Talkcast Time! If the holiday crazies haven't completely overcome you yet, join me at 5PM Hawaii/7PM Pacific/10PM Eastern for some holiday goings-on. We'll be discussing gifts for those who haven't finished shopping already, primarily from our own Holiday Gift Guides, but we're also looking for your suggestions as well. What's the one thing you've asked Santa for? What's the killer gift idea you have for someone else? Let us know! As usual, the chat room will be providing color commentary and generally trying to cause trouble, so do join them, it's always a lovely conversation going on in conjunction with the recording. And besides, you never know who will actually show up! Also keep in mind that we are planning to have some aftershow tonight, and it's been a while since the last one so it's bound to be interesting. Come find out why we never EVER record it! Your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be, otherwise I'm just talking to myself! If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free X-Lite, or Blink Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk to you tonight!
