  • The Wolf Among Us 'A Crooked Mile' review: Workhorse

The middle part of a story is always the toughest. Lacking the oomph of the intro or the satisfaction of the conclusion, it must nevertheless keep events moving forward, stalwartly fulfilling its duty as the lynchpin keeping the entire narrative together. "A Crooked Mile," Episode 3 of Telltale's episodic whodunnit The Wolf Among Us, lacks the high drama of what's come before it and sets up the questions that will be answered in the Episodes to come. As a result, it's a good storytelling soldier, letting itself be bland and bleak so that the other chapters can shine. Without spoiling the specific events of the first two episodes, Bigby and Snow have a promising lead into their investigation about the two murders, but it's one that hits uncomfortably close to home. No sooner have they started examining options as to how to follow up this lead than Bluebeard barges in and starts throwing his weight around. He has a large financial investment in Fabletown, and feels entitled to running whatever bits of it he feels like – so what if he's not actually an elected official or the Sheriff? He's rich and belligerent and it's going to take more than an ex-princess in a well-tailored suit to stop him.

Telltale has lupus'd in on when we can fetch the third The Wolf Among Us episode. It'll be April 8 for PC/Mac and PS3 in North America, followed by Xbox 360, PS3 in Europe and iOS the next day. Telltale put out a trailer for episode three yesterday, but if you've yet to begin the adventure game from The Walking Dead studio, you'll want to skip watching it and wolf down the first two episodes first (there be serious spoilers in the trailer). Telltale Games is bringing three of its story-driven adventures to Amazon Fire TV starting with the first season of The Walking Dead, which launched today with the media streaming device. The second season, in addition to The Wolf Among Us and the developer's Game of Thrones-based adventure, will arrive on Fire TV later this year, Telltale confirmed with Joystiq and Engadget. Amazon launched the $99 game and video streaming machine today, announcing it alongside a $40 game pad (though developers have the option to support other Bluetooth controllers). Telltale unveiled its own Game of Thrones adaptation in December before launching the second episode of The Wolf Among Us in February. The developer offered a new trailer for the third episode of the game today, though no release date was given for it. [Image: Telltale Games]

Spoiler warning ahoy! The middle episode in Telltale's "Fables" adaptation was always going to be an important one, so no surprises the launch trailer exposes a few surprises. However, the most eyebrow-raising thing about the video is the lack of any launch date to go with it - not often you see that with a launch trailer, even for a Telltale game. Still, it's a strong sign we'll soon be scouring the streets of Fabletown with Bigby Wolf, and no doubt a welcome one after the four-month wait for Episode 2. In any case, we'll keep you updated on all the dates and launch news for Episode 3: A Crooked Mile as it arrives. [Image: Telltale Games]

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Sonic has a history of being a bit too social for his own good, but the roster shown for Sonic Boom's reveal on the 3DS and Wii U? Not bad! We can deal with Amy Rose and the newly tank-like Knuckles, but if Silver the Hedgehog shows up at some point? The deal is off. Aside from a new Sonic cycle, this week brought rough news from Sony, a review of The Banner Saga and an awards show that didn't hurt to watch! We've got that and much more ready for you to devour after the break.

  • Makeshift fix for The Wolf Among Us 360 season pass issue

    02.06.2014

Yesterday, we brought you word of an issue which left Xbox 360 players who purchased the season pass for Telltale's The Wolf Among Us unable to download the game's second episode. Today, Microsoft offers a solution. "All The Wolf Among Us season pass owners will be sent Xbox 360 console system message codes that will allow them to download Episode 2 for no additional charge," reads a message recently added to Telltale's support page. "If you intended to buy a season pass for The Wolf Among Us, but haven't yet, you can continue to do so. New season pass purchasers will also receive codes by console system message while the title update is in progress." Following this, the site offers players a detailed walkthrough on how to use their new codes. Though this doesn't solve the ongoing issues Xbox Live is experiencing with certain downloadable content offerings, it does allow users to enjoy the game they've already paid for in a timely manner. Microsoft and Telltale are currently working together on a title update that will prevent such problems from happening in the future, but a timeframe for when that fix might debut remains unknown. • The Wolf Among Us bitten by season pass issues on Xbox 360

    02.05.2014

Following yesterday's release of the second episode of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, those who purchased a season pass on the Xbox 360 began reporting problems with their game. "I bought the season pass but there is only an option to buy [Episode 2], no option to download it with the season pass," reads one of the few complaints suitable for publication. 17 pages of comments follow that remark, the majority of which claim that owners of the season pass are not being given immediate, gratis access to Episode 2, despite having already paid for the entirety of The Wolf Among Us. Telltale Games has yet to offer users a solution, but says that Microsoft is looking into the issue. "Note: Microsoft is investigating a current issue regarding season passes for TWAU on 360 and will supply progress updates via @XboxSupport," Telltale tweeted. So far, the @XboxSupport Twitter account hasn't mentioned The Wolf Among Us, nor provided additional information on this problem. Update: Telltale has issued a more comprehensive statement, noting that the issue stems not from the developer but instead from ongoing problems with DLC on the Xbox 360. "We are aware of the issue on XBOX Live Marketplace affecting Season Pass owners of The Wolf Among Us where the user is still prompted to purchase Episode 2 even though they own the Season Pass. There appears to be an issue on XBOX Live affecting multiple titles with DLC offerings and Microsoft is actively working to resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and are hopeful it will be resolved soon." [Image: Telltale Games]

  • The Wolf Among Us 'Smoke and Mirrors' review: Of wolf and man

    by
    Susan Arendt

    02.04.2014

Fairy tales are stories for children, and as such are full of magic, fantasy, and wonderment. What we tend to forget, however, is that murderers lie in wait for the princesses, and monsters lurk in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to destroy happiness. Episode 2 of The Wolf Among Us, "Smoke and Mirrors" reminds us that our fables are full of twisted characters who prey on the innocence or desperation of others. It's harsh and bleak and will make you uncomfortable, even when you're not examining the corpse. As a quick reminder, the characters of Wolf Among Us are Fables, the actual characters from our storybooks, who've fled their Homelands and taken up residence in a section of New York called Fabletown. You play as Bigby Wolf, sheriff of Fabletown, who is continuing his investigation into the murder of Episode 1, "Faith," finding himself with another dead body and even more questions. Between his responsibilities as sheriff, his checkered past, and his own less-than-stellar interpersonal skills, Bigby's constantly being pulled in several different directions at once – is he the wolf, or the lawman, the reasonable symbol of justice, or a thug? He is all of these things, and more, and the events of "Smoke and Mirrors" reveal his complexities. He's a marvelous character to role-play, never quite one thing or the other, and he provides the anchor that the story needs to keep from spinning off into the darkness.

The Wolf Among Us episode two, Smoke and Mirrors, will be coming to PC, Mac and North American PS3s on February 4, with an Xbox 360 and European PS3 launch to follow the day after. Developer Telltale tweeted the news yesterday, and was met with ... a question about when the next episode of The Walking Dead: Season Two would be out. Someone throw poor, neglected Bigby a bone here! We already knew the second episode in Telltale's take on the Fables universe would be coming in the first week of February, but we didn't have exact dates. Thanks to Telltale's tweet, now we do. Looks like we won't need to consult with the Magic Mirror after all. [Image: Telltale Games]

    > Just like Bigby, the events in the first episode of The Wolf Among Us left us curious, even confused. Spoilers abound, then, in this NSFW trailer for Episode 2, which only seems to raise more questions. Of course, the biggest question for Telltale's grim fairy-tale is when is Episode 2 gonna get with the getting on - it's been a long wait since the first episode in October. Last time we heard, it was due in the first week of February, and that's next week.

The Wolf Among Us episode two, Smoke and Mirrors, should launch in the first week of February, Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner announced on the studio's forum. He didn't reveal platform order, but he said Telltale is working with "Xbox, PlayStation, Steam [and] Apple" to coordinate the launch. "We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us (not to mention the additional delays due to the holidays)," he wrote. "I won't dive into the details, but it's been an unusual and specific set of circumstances and we do not anticipate it happening again as we go forward with the rest of the season." The Wolf Among Us episode one launched in October for Xbox 360 and PC, followed by PS3 and Mac, and finally iOS in December. We called episode one "the perfect beginning to a new adventure from Telltale." Here's hoping the second episode is similarly worth the wait.

  • Daily iPad App: The Wolf Among Us turns the comic into a "choice and consequence" game thriller

    by
    Michael Grothaus
    Michael Grothaus
    12.10.2013

If you enjoyed Telltale Game's masterpiece (and 2012 Game of the Year) The Walking Dead, you're going to want to check out its latest "choice and consequence" game thriller, The Wolf Among Us. Like The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us is not an original property. It's also based off of a comic book by DC/Vertigo called Fables. And like The Walking Dead, the game's brilliance lies not so much in its action or gameplay, but in the choices one is forced to make and the consequences that result. In The Wolf Among Us you play Bigby Wolf, the sheriff of Fabletown, a fictional city much like New York except that characters from classic fairly tales live among normal human beings in a disguised form. In a game where the story matters leagues more than the game mechanics -- not to mention the story changes based on the choices you make -- it's hard to talk about the plot without ruining it for those that haven't played it. Given that, let me just tell you that the game starts with Sheriff Bigby being called to a run-down apartment by Mr. Toad because something is going on in the upstairs apartment of the Woodsman of Little Red Riding Hood fame. Then things get weird... The game eschews 3D graphics for cell-shaded animation that works perfectly in this creepy world where things just aren't quite right. But it's the voice narration on the writing that make this game a serious contender for Game of the Year. The Wolf Among Us, again, just like The Walking Dead, is not a one-off. The entire game will consist of five episodes, the first of which is called "Faith" and is available now. The remaining four episodes: Smoke and Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep's Clothing and Cry Wolf will be made available on a sequential basis throughout 2014. The Wolf Among Us is a universal app and costs US$4.99 for the first episode. Each following episode will cost another $4.99 via in-app purchase, or you can buy the Multi-Pack purchase which includes Episodes 2-5 for a total of $14.99, or 25 percent off the individual price.

Telltale's The Wolf Among Us is set to launch today on iOS. The game's first episode, titled "Faith," will cost $4.99, while a pass for the game's entire season will be priced at $14.99, Touch Arcade reported. The latest trailer for the game notes that it will also arrive "soon" on PlayStation Vita. The Wolf Among Us' first episode launched in mid-October on Xbox 360 and PC. The series is based on Bill Willingham's Fables comic series, guiding the werewolf-like Sheriff Bigby through a section of New York City known as Fabletown. Our review of the episode found the game to be a "perfect beginning" to Telltale's new series, and it made us "invested in protecting these curious creatures from our storybooks."

Ah, graphics. It's hard to describe why we like the graphical styles we do. I like the stylings of many games, but some are just so perfect that the graphics reach beyond a visual style and become a sort of textural memory in my gamer's heart. Each year, scores of games come out, and though I enjoy many of them, most do not affect me the way the look of games like The Chronicles of Spellborn or even Free Realms does. There are a lot of single-player titles that just blow me away as well. Recently I was absolutely transfixed by Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. I stayed up late one night to finish it, and the graphics just kept getting better the entire time. Then there's The Wolf Among Us, a new title by Telltale Games, the same studio that made The Walking Dead series. It's made me remember just how amazing graphics can be without requiring a massive gaming rig. Did you like the look of The Wolf Among Us as well? Here are some MMOs that feel similar.

The Wolf Among Us, the hit episodic title from Telltale Games, is breaking free of its current console and desktop shackles and will land on iOS by the end of the year. The developer revealed the news in a new trailer released just today. The game takes classic fairytale characters and adds a dark and brutal twist, gaining praise from all corners of the gaming world. No official release date or pricing structure was revealed, but given that the game is episodic -- and given that Telltale's episodic The Walking Dead game also appeared on iOS -- you can expect each playable episode to fall somewhere near the same US$5 mark.
