Here’s a sneak peek at Nokia’s first high-end Android phone
Finnish startup HMD Global resurrected the Nokia name with a new line of Android smartphones unveiled back in February. Undaunted by lack of carrier deals, they've kept expanding it throughout the year, including releasing the Nokia 6 in the US back in June. But a few leaks have revealed images of and specs for the next smartphone in the series, the powered-up Nokia 8, which looks to be HMD's first stab at a higher-end smartphone. And yes, it will reportedly come with Zeiss optics.
HMD's Nokia 6 will arrive in the US next month for $229
Like so many European acts that tried to make it big in the US, Nokia never really managed to crack the market in its original form. But HMD Global, the company that produces smartphones using the Nokia brand, is hoping that will change with the arrival of the Nokia 6. The company has announced that, a little later than expected, the handset will be available in America at the start of July. Unfortunately, there's no carrier deal or other such tie-up, and instead you'll have to purchase the device, for cash, on Amazon.
Nokia's new Android phones will make their way Stateside
Nokia's 3310 stole the show at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, but it wasn't the only device the brand announced at the event. It also debuted a trio of Android phones called the Nokia 6, 5 and 3. Now the company has revealed on Twitter that those three will all be available in the US. We've known for a while that there's a global release on the docket, but this confirms that you'll be able to get your hands on them when the time comes. Nokia also told another Twitter follower that the phone's projected release date is still sometime between April and June.
Nokia got better at Android phones, fast
In case you forgot, Nokia's new 6, 5 and 3 aren't actually the company's first Android devices. Many years ago, it made a mistake the Nokia X. It wasn't really aimed at western markets and (if you ever got to play with one), it wasn't really all that good. Fortunately, this second attempt demonstrates that the company's far more serious with Android, with a classy Scandinavian design notes and an unobtrusive (and importantly up to date) mobile operating system. All the devices clock in at under $250, too, which means Nokia's taking aim at the mid-range smartphone heartland. The company has learned fast.
Nokia's fresh start hinges on these Android phones
For years, people have wondered what an Android-powered Nokia phone would look like. The company's trademark design prowess, matched with Google's software and stellar app support; a match made in heaven, right? Well, after all these years, we can finally find out. Sort of. HMD Global, a Finnish startup, has made four smartphones on Nokia's behalf. One of them, the Nokia 6, was announced at CES, while the other three are completely new. All of them will launch in the second quarter of 2017, with "global" availability through more than 500 retailers and carriers.
Nokia launches its first Android smartphone
The first Nokia Android smartphone from the brand's exclusive licensee for mobile devices has finally arrived. Sadly, comes with bad news for folks who want to try it out: It will only be available in China. Finnish company HMD Global, which acquired the rights to release Nokia-branded phones and tablets after Microsoft abandoned the venture, started by releasing dumb phones in 2016. The Nokia 6, however, is a legit LTE smartphone that runs Nougat out of the box. It has a 5.5-inch HD screen, 16MP rear and 8MB front cameras, is equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 430 processor and packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
This might be the last Microsoft Nokia phone
Microsoft's association with the Nokia brand has been especially turbulent, but it appears the company has one last hurrah for its feature phone business. Today, it announced the Nokia 216, a Series 30+ handset that can browse the web and lasts up to a month on standby. It's as basic as Nokia feature phones get, but it's notable in that it's probably the very last Nokia-branded handset Microsoft will ever produce.
Microsoft kills what's left of the old Nokia
Last week, Microsoft sold off what remained of Nokia's feature phone business while Windows Phone's market share slid below a single percent. Now, the company has taken what's clearly the last step in correcting Steve Ballmer's decision to purchase the mobile world's former number one. The Verge has secured an internal memo from Microsoft's Terry Myerson saying that the company will cull 1,850 jobs, 1,350 of which are in Finland. The company has also recorded a $950 million impairment and restructuring charge on its balance sheet, of which $200 million will be severance payouts to those employees.
