So you find yourself at the 30-ish level in Tabula Rasa, and you feel like hitting the scum sucking Bane right where it hurts. Try bringing down the Casso Weapons Facility then, the Bane's primary manufacturing facility for Energy Weapons. Located on the planet Arieki in the southwestern region known as the Mires, this high priority military target is especially valuable to the Bane. Going Rambo on this place will benefit the AFS for some time. But doing so ain't easy, and having the assistance of TTH's eloquent Tabula Rasa guides (in this case their Energy Weapons Center Guide) will increase the odds for success. Some of the more interesting nuggets o' knowledge in this guide include the time needed to run the instance (less than an hour, half thatif you're running with a group full of barbarians). During the mission ("It's All In the Timing") given to you by Sgt. Wolfe you'll have to time your movement through a maze of Death Star-like plasma reactors, otherwise you'll roast like a marshmallow left over an open flame too long. Once you get the timing down though, you can draw the mindless Bane in and watch them get incinerated. Good stuff! For the whole briefing be sure to check out the guide, and help put a dent in the Bane's fight against humanity!

  • Our 2008 Tabula Rasa wish list: it's sci-fi-tastic!

The past year was a big one for Tabula Rasa and all who call it a virtual home. While most players only had a scant two months to enjoy the worlds that Richard Garriott and company created, the news came thick, and the time was exceedingly well spent. And Massively has been there from the beginning. From the end of beta event to the 24 hours of Tabula Rasa contests, from our visit to the NCsoft office to Richard Garriott's lecture at George Washington University, we've been all over Tabula Rasa like white on rice, and we plan to keep it that way.Having said that, we have a few things we're looking forward to from the Destination Games crew for the year 2008, from the more mundane to the potentially fantastic. As much as we enjoy blasting the Bane in the game's current state, if we had our way, this wish list would be on the public test realm tomorrow.

With the arrival of each new year everyone likes to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Ya, I know... that joke has been done to death, but I couldn't resist. With the new year Tabula Rasa Stratics is launching a brand new section to their website, as well as holding a very ambitious contest. "Heroes of the AFS" will be an area honoring the heroic soldiers who act as the last line of defense against the Bane. Each hero will have their own profile page containing key facts about their character (i.e., Name, Class, Server, Clan and a short bio of 100 words or less). Anyone can add a hero (simply by registering first). But for the contest itself players must write a story about their character (following the guidelines set by TR's "Soul of a Soldier" series). The story specifics are these: Entries must be written in character, and be in first person voice. Entries should include a suggested title. Entries must take place within the Tabula Rasa universe and spotlight the day to day life of an AFS soldier. You are encouraged to make references to actual in game locations, characters, story arcs, and in game events. Entries should be short. 200-300 words is ideal. Entries with more then 500 words can still be added to your profile, but will not be eligible for this contest. All entries are subject to screening and editing before being posted on the site. Entries must not violate the User Agreement regarding copyrighted materials, profanity, etc... Multiple entries ARE acceptable and will provide extra chances to win in the random drawing. Only one prize can be won by any individual however, so if you are selected for a prize you will not be eligible for a second prize. The contest started yesterday (Thursday, January 3) and runs runs through Saturday, January 19 - so if you're interested you best hurry over to TR Stratics "Heroes of the AFS" page and get the lowdown ASAP!

  • Public Service Announcement: clean up your drones!

Any player who has leveled a character in Tabula Rasa past level 25 is likely intimately familiar with the dregs of the Arieki planet -- the Mires. For those not in the know, the Mires is a hotly contested area of the volcanic planet, with much of its geographical area patrolled by roving gangs of Bane. As a rather curious, though likely completely unforeseen side effect of these enemy packs is that the Mires is far and away the laggiest area of any MMO in recent memory. Lag is hardly anything new, especially for a genre as tethered to the online experience as the massively multiplayer, but for a zone to be so singularly laggy is particularly rare. And this after it was claimed a month ago by the devs that the Mires was free from performance issues. Hmm...Evidently, the lag in the Mires is a well-known issue and is actually attributed to an over-abundance of shield drones in the area. Shield drones are small flying robots that hover around groups of Bane and cast a protective yellow bubble around all those who stay within its radius, shielding those inside from most damage. A typical strategy when faced with large groups of Bane and their accompanying drones is to first target the shield drones with EMP weapons to lower the groups defenses, before moving on to assault the larger force. What has happened is that the AFS NPCs who engage these groups of Bane as part of Tabula Rasa's unique persistent warfare, lack the skills or know-how to take out these shield drones. The consequence? The Mires is absolutely covered in small groups of shield drones with nobody to protect but themselves. These wandering shield drones are responsible for the two second lag between when you hit the trigger and when that sonic missile leaves your launcher. Bah humbug. As if we didn't have it bad enough already, I've seen many players blast through dozens of groups of Thrax and Kael, only to leave half a dozen shield drones in their wake. And we wonder why there's lag! So I'm putting out a call to everybody who finds themselves questing in the Mires: clean up your after yourselves, you lazy gits soldiers! Shoot down those drones.

  • TTH guide to the Ojasa Colony

As with all of TenTonHammer's guides, the latest one for Tabula Rasa's Ojasa Colony (located on the planet Arieki) is an invaluable tool in taking on the nasty Atta. Each one is filled with helpful tidbits like navigations tips (The geography is basically four quasi-circular areas that are interconnected via tunnels) and combat tips (never crouch or stand still when fighting Atta up close. They have a nasty melee attack that can be avoided if you are always on the move) that will get you through the toughest missions.I've been hooked on TR since beta, and I was fortunate enough to score the world exclusive review for this epic, sci-fi MMO. The more time I put into the game the more I enjoy it. Thankfully, I'm also finding as more and more of these helpful guides are made, the more intrigued (some would say obsessed - semantics) I become by this game. These guides, usually created out of a fan's passion for a particular game, really epitomize what massive multiplayer games are all about - teaming up, cooperating and sharing... all for the greater good. TenTonHammer has a ton of guides for a plethora of games, so be sure to check them out if you need a helping hand.

  • TTH interviews April "CuppaJo" Burba - again

Ten Ton drops "the Hammer" on Tabula Rasa's Community Coordinator April "CuppaJo" Burba again, this time they bombard her with a slew of questions regarding what players can expect from the Bane bashing game in '08. April's very honest answers (a trademark from her CoH days) might shock and amaze you as she dazzles them with a lot of new information. For instance, she readily admits that TRs end game needs work and players need more of a reason to move beyond level 30. Ironically, she even fesses up about an issue that seems to be gaining some serious traction - not just in TR, but within the industry as a whole: players don't feel special enough. A host of PvP and Clan changes are being worked on. New areas on the TR website will be added where players can access competition ladders and compare their characters (i.e., see how many PvP kills a player has, how fast someone completed a mission, what kind of loot they have, and more). She states that attribute points need to be tweaked because the way a player currently specs out their character doesn't affect them as much as it should. Uh, can you believe a game official actually admitted to that? Additionally, the ethical choices that players are faced with (which I really enjoy) will become much more meaningful. We don't want to give everything away (like the juicy tidbit about an upcoming contest regarding something very special - oops!)... so before I spill all the beans, hop on over to TTH's latest Q&A already!

  • TR demolitionist shows how a novelty build goes boom

    by

Their game having only been out for two months now, Tabula Rasa players really haven't been able to indulge in the curious wonder that is the novelty build. You know the type; that player who directs a veritable laser focus on making his character excel in a very specific, though usually not entirely practical or ordinary aspect of his game du jour. The difficulty of building one of these hyper-specialists varies from game to game, and Tabula Rasa's casual-friendly cloning dynamic favors this kind of experimentation and specialization. The video shown above, plucked from the Planet TR forums, shows a player named Kore from the Cassiopeia server demonstrating the extraordinary explosive potential of a speed freak demolitionist build. Seeing a demolitionist at all is rare enough, as the specialist classes still haven't seen the full buff that the designers have promised, but spotting a demolitionist decked out in motor assist armor and popping pump 5 sprint is perhaps rarer still. Looks pretty fun to me though.

  • Logos Atlas sends a call for casual cryptologists

    by

One of the interesting, if often ignored, parts of Tabula Rasa's lore are the Logos symbols. Not to be confused with Logos itself - which is said to be the power which controls the very fabric of the cosmos, or Logos abilities - which are TR's version of magic spells, Logos symbols are those little figures that appear on shrines and holy places, and make up the language that is used to tell the stories of the Eloh. Truthfully, their function in the lore is something that I haven't seen players show a terribly large amount of interest in to this point, but from hearing General British himself speak about them, it's easy to tell that they're something he put a good deal of thought into and is quite proud of -- even suggesting that they would make a good universal language for the deaf.Among the Tabula Rasa resources on the 'net, Logos Atlas is easily the most reliable as it concerns the location of Logos shrines and their meaning. It should already occupy a spot in the bookmarks of any self-respecting member of the AFS. To drum up a bit of interest in their site, Logos Atlas is holding a contest through the end of the year, offering an Ideazon Zboard with a Tabula Rasa keyset and a Tabula Rasa FragMat mousepad for one lucky winner who can successfully decipher three puzzles written using Logos symbols. It sounds a lot easier than it actually is, and we're told nobody has successfully completed them yet. So if you fancy yourself an amateur cryptologist, give the contest a look -- it's free loot after all.

  • Tabula Rasa in an equipment bind once again

    by

    12.24.2007

About a month ago, I wrote an editorial about the controversy surrounding a change that Destination Games was planning to make to the itemization in their hit sci-fi MMO Tabula Rasa. At the core of contention was the proposed change that would make items have basic armor and weapon damage bonuses commensurate with the item's rarity. This was to be an important first-step to jump-starting Tabula Rasa's economy with the introduction of the Military Surplus. I came out strongly backing the fix, because I thought it would add some value to Tabula Rasa's credits and get the crafter aspect of the game kick-started.I'm sad to report that things didn't work quite as I expected. The Military Surplus has seen a huge volume of business since it was put in, but once the initial price bubble for rare items burst, it became clear that the market for equipment in Tabula Rasa was broken, and for one simple reason: the game still lacks a mechanism where items are bind on equip. The consequence? The Military Surplus is flooded with rare item drops and quest rewards, and the market is only getting more saturated as players use their items, out-level them, then put them up for sale. The crafting element of the game, where items are taken apart for components that can be used to upgrade other items, isn't taking items off the MS fast enough. While it's made finding 1337 equipment an easy task for even the most casual player, the quest for gear has fallen into the general background noise of the game. It's gotten to the point where it's scarcely worth putting items on the Military Surplus at all anymore, because one can make more money just grinding in the time it would take to list them. While I implore Paul Sage and company to continue to make the end-game the priority, I think it might also be in their best interest to slap a Bind on Equip sticker on items in the meantime.

  • General British stirs the troops at AFS Memorial Service

On December 21st, many Tabula Rasa players attended a memorial service, to honor the brave souls who gave their lives in 2012 protecting Earth from the Bane. The event was hosted by the Tabula Rasa Roleplayers, and was attended by Richard "General British" Garriott, who delivered a stirring message for the assembled gathering.Tabula Rasa Vault now has a transcript of the service for those who couldn't be there on the day. A snippet of the General's speech: "Earth may have been defeated but the human spirit was not and it is my hope this DE day that each and every one of us become a monument to the unquenchable power of that human spirit for as long as we remember and as long as we fight, we are living proof that humanity survives in all of us. LONG LIVE THE AFS!"The TR Vault link has the rest of his speech, as well as transcripts of the other speakers and the entire event itself.

  • TR beginner's guide to the Spy

    by
    Louis McLaughlin

    12.21.2007

IGN's TRVault has the first part up of a new series covering the major classes of Tabula Rasa, and first up is the Spy. It's reasonably concise, as primers go. For those who don't know, Spies are TR's version of the rogue class. They're stealth armored, blade wielding killing machines that can do everything from polymorphing into an enemy soldier, to causing hostile foes to turn traitor, to calling in bombing runs.Currently, Spies are not only the most popular class in the final tier, but arguably the most powerful too. Spies are the only class that can tank, heal, resurrect, and DPS as the situation requires -- though some of these may change if Polymorph gets the rumored bug-fix in 1.4. Spies are great for experience multipliers when played properly, too.Spies are amazing at PvP as things stand, so I can see the temptation to level one built for PvP. But unless you're in a very active PvP clan, the better option is to level yourself as PvE, gather as many clone tokens as possible from Targets of Opportunity, then clone yourself a pure PvP Spy when relevant updates are implemented. Tabula Rasa Capture The Flag, anyone?

It's very debatable, but the biggest investment into any MMO is time. It's one thing to just pay to play the game, as there are several per-month services you can pay for, such as cable television, or car insurance, or sometimes simple things like a book club. But no normal service, however, require both the time and monetary investment like an MMO does. They are designed from the ground up to be full of grinding, time-wasting, and slow experience gain. But why is that?

  • State of the NCsoft Union address

    12.21.2007

Robert Garriott, the soon-to-be former President of NCsoft North America, dropped a "State of the Union" style press release yesterday regarding the massive online gaming company. It's a brief but insightful rundown detailing what they've done with their Intellectual Properties (Tabula Rasa, Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Lineage, Dungeon Runners, etc.) in the past year, and what they intend do with them in the coming year. Garriott also mentioned new projects they're working, like AION: Tower of Eternity, and the recently signed pact with Sony where NCsoft will be producing products for the PlayStation 3. While no details were given on exactly what those products may be, Garriott said the first one should be released by the end of 2008. This new deal includes porting "existing titles in interesting new ways or utilizing new IPs." Hmmm, intriguing.Of particular interest to me was Robert's comments regarding the City of Heroes property. Back in early November NCsoft acquired the entire IP from Cryptic Studios - lock, stock and two smoking blaster barrels. Like wildfire the CoX forums were consumed by doomsayers and speculators decrying that this was the beginning of the end. Not so. According to Garriott, they loved the property so much they wanted to re-invest in it, and the best way to do that was to buy it. Since then they've created a whole new studio (NCsoft NorCal) and hired the entire CoH development team. If that wasn't enough to give even the most cynical gamer a glimmer of hope, they're currently hiring more people to take CoX to a "whole.. nutha... level."Last but least... as reported yesterday, Robert Garriott will be leaving his post as President of NCsoft's North American business and moving into a role of global business development and planning. Taking his place will be NCsoft's current vice president of worldwide product development, Chris Chung, who has been with the company for some time. The change will take effect on January 1, 2008. A Happy New Year indeed! All in all, I'd say the future looks very bright for NCsoft.

  • Tabula Rasa servers down for hotfix [Updated]

    12.20.2007

Tabula Rasa players hoping to enjoy some shooty MMORPG action after work will be a disappointed, as all four of the game servers are down for maintenance as of 5 p.m. EST this evening. According to a note on the official site, the servers are being brought down to apply a hotfix that will fix an error that was causing syncing problems between backpacks and footlockers, and another that was preventing players from accessing the new Faultlever instance. You'll have to forgive us for being skeptical, but we suspect that there's problem more to this. If they're really dead set on fixing these problems (and the syncing issue has been around since launch, which is why we're curious about the apparent urgency), why would you bring the servers down during prime time, instead of in the early morning when nobody is playing?[Update: No sooner do we put this story live than the servers come back live. Huzzah!]

  • Calling all TR experts - wanna be a wolf?

    12.20.2007

The good people over at Tabula Rasa Vault are putting out a call vise vie the official Tabula Rasa website for experienced players to be "alpha wolves" in their new clan -- The Wolf Pack. What ostensibly sets this clan apart from every clan out there is the information-gathering role it will play for the TR Vault community. They're looking for players who are experts in their given class to find all there is to know, gather the concerns of other players in their class du jour, and suggest solutions to perceived class imbalances. Apparently, this role is more than just a self-appointed one -- as they're promising that these Alpha Dogs will get the chance to discuss their concerns with the TR designers themselves. It's not uncommon in other titles for developers to pay attention to the class concerns of a game's elite guilds, but it's rare that a clan can promise that sort of interaction before most people have even settled in the end game. They're still recruiting for all Tier IV classes, so if being an Alpha Dog sounds like your cup of tea, check out the information on the TR website.

As noted yesterday in our article "A time to remember," Remembrance Day is very meaningful within Tabula Rasa lore. Well, the "soldiers" over at Tabula Rasa Roleplayers have no intention of letting December 21st slide by unnoticed as they'll be hosting a Memorial Service to honor all that was lost when the Bane invaded Earth. Via the TR Roleplayer website: On December 21st, 2012 life changed, we changed. The Bane took away our homes, our loved ones, and our comfortable lives. But we have not given up; we have not laid down and surrendered.Let us not forget what we have lost, and those who we left behind. Let us remember our purpose, our goals, and what we are fighting for. Let us put our differences aside, and stand together as one in remembrance. And lest you think this is no big deal... the General British will be attending. For more information, be sure to check out Tabula Rasa Roleplayers.

Tabula Rasa's Community Manager April "CuppaJo" Burba is a busy gal this holiday season as she makes herself available to yet another TR fansite. This time answering a handful of questions for the fans at MMORPGslave.com.While some of the Q&As are redundant info obtained early from the Ten Ton Hammer Q&A, there were snipets of all new info. Most intriguing to me was the mention that boxing rings will be a new feature. Sarcasm? Perhaps. CuppaJo is like that, especially when she doesn't get her coffee. However, boxing is a big part of our real-world armed forces, so it makes sense. And it would be very, very fun!Another interesting tidbit was that they (the devs) have a team specifically dedicated to tackling class based issues reported via feedback from the players and community. For all the scuttlebutt fit to print (or that CuppaJo will divulge), head over to MMORPGslave ASAP.

The fine folks over at Destination Games are throwing their lot into the charity ring this holiday season with a few auctions full of Tabula Rasa goodies sure to make any gamer's non-denominational season celebration all the sweeter. The proceeds will be going to the charity of champions -- Child's Play. If you aren't already aware, Child's Play is a charity originally organized by the guys over at Penny Arcade to buy toys (video games and more traditional fare) for sick kids in partner hospitals across the country. On the docket: Two separate auctions (found here and here) for a copy Tabula Rasa signed by Richard Garriott w/ TR dog tags from E3 '06, a developer Tabula Rasa challenge coin, an AFS clearance card, and a picture of Richard Garriott in his goofy magician's outfit. An NPC named after the auction winner to be placed in the Tabula Rasa world. Assuming the winner owns Tabula Rasa, they will also be escorted to the NPC bearing their name by none other than General British himself. Even if you're not interested in these auctions, we urge you to check Child's Play out. In the interest of not being a huge hypocrite, this writer just plugged his credit card number in and bought a game for a sick kid. It's easy, fast, and it'll make you feel good about yourself!
