PlayStation 3 owners with Grand Theft Auto IV can now (virtually) carjack with more purpose. Rockstar has released the Trophy patch for GTAIV tonight, technically a few hours earlier than expected. The Trophies are not retroactive, meaning you'll have to play through the game again to earn them all. Between this and the new zombie infestation, it's getting a lot tougher ignoring the game as we try to get through the glut of other AAA titles from this holiday season.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

So when Rockstar says "Monday the 27th of October" it seems they actually mean "the evening of Sunday the 26th." The GTA IV Trophy patch is now live and ready to be downloaded worldwide. So if you're not too busy exploring Africa, the Ishimura or Rapture, why not have another go around Liberty City? Keep in mind that you'll have to start a new game as the Trophies are not retroactive. But was anyone really expecting them to be?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

It's raining trophies. We honestly didn't expect so many games to have Trophies patched in, not to mention all these great games that are being released with built-in Trophy support. Anyone else notice how EA is doing a marvelous job of pushing its developers to add the functionality? Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield: Bad Company, Burnout Paradise. Hats off to them. Mercenaries 2 is no exception and the Trophy patch has now gone live in Europe. No doubt it'll reach the US sometime later today, if it hasn't already. We'll keep you informed.[UPDATE] The patch is now available in the US, too. Thanks to everyone who emailed us to let us know.

Q-Games isn't reinventing the wheel, it's just slapping on a new set of tires, as PixelJunk Monsters and Encore expansion updates hit PSN next week. The October 30th patches will add Trophies and variable difficulties (including a "casual" mode), as promised, but the free upgrades don't stop there. In addition, the tower selection menu will be tweaked (with an option to set the default action), the Ice and Tesla Towers will be re-balanced for the original island, custom soundtracks will be supported, and YouTube uploading has been added (up to 10 minutes of gameplay -- videos can also be stored in the XMB's video folder). Now, about online co-op ...If you fancy another go with these exciting details -- only this time in Dylan Cuthbert's drab British accent -- then by all means, head for the video preview after the break!

There's at least one PSN game which is universally loved: PixelJunk Monsters. We recently got a chance to play PJM at Q-Games' studios in Kyoto. However, it wasn't quite the same game we've grown to love: it's PixelJunk Monsters -- with an awesome patch. The upcoming patch adds Trophy support, YouTube recording, new difficulty levels (Easy and Hard), and adjusts the strength of the towers a bit. For example, you'll have the ice tower available (no gems required!). Also, the Tesla tower's range has been increased. We want to say more about the Trophy mode, but we're still awaiting approval from SCEA on how much we can divulge about that. We will give you one tease: you won't have to worry about these Trophies being retroactive. Update: So, the PlayStation.blog has just updated with the official details on the Trophy patch, which will be available on October 30th, in America and Europe. Watch Dylan Cuthbert talk about the details in this new video.

  • Rumor: PS3 Trophy rewards to become more rewarding

    by

    10.20.2008

Several months after Sony launched its campaign to exploit a widespread gaming neurosis discovered by Microsoft during the development of Xbox 360, the company is considering a change of heart, suggests a rumor plucked from the pages of OPM. That is, instead of treating afflicted players with relatively useless, congratulatory Trophy pop-ups, Sony may be "mulling over some sort of [actual] Trophy reward system" -- one which could offer valuable amends. While OPM and CVG speculate these rewards would likely stop at exclusive beta access and kick-ass wallpapers, we're imagining something greater. Like, chicken rings. Sony could actually do some good by eliminating the typical, self-inflicted starvation that plagues Trophy hoarders. You see, when it comes to, "Do I spend this last 10-spot on dinner or Geon Emotions?" clinical studies have shown sufferers of DRHS (Digital Reward Hoarding Syndrome) choose the latter option 99 out of 100 times. But what if unlocking the "Geon King" Trophy also meant a Triple Whopper wit' cheese was waiting for you down the street at Burger King? Please Sony, if you won't help us defeat DRHS, at least help us treat it.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Rumor: Sony working on rewards system for Trophy-getters

    by

This is interesting and somewhat bizarre at the same time. According to the US Official PlayStation Magazine (via CVG), Sony might be working on a rewards system for Trophy-whores Trophy-hunters. The concept here involves getting another type of reward for obtaining the most difficult Trophies. Apparently, earning a shiny graphic of a platinum Trophy isn't enough of an accolade; there has to be more. US OPM suggests that the new rewards could be anything from early beta access, to free wallpapers and themes. As of right now, this is still a rumor. Take it with a grain of salt. If this does prove to be true, then Trophy grabbing seems to be an even more lucrative feature.

  • SOCOM: Confrontation trophies to be patched in soon

Would-be digital soldiers were disappointed this week to find that the recently released SOCOM: Confrontation was launched sans trophies. We're not exactly sure why, though rumor has it that the title's much-coveted cups just weren't shiny enough. According to Sony PR rep Jennifer Clark, "The trophies will become available via patch in the coming weeks." In the mean time, highly skilled players will be mailed postcards which, depending on the level of militaristic prowess displayed in-game, will be adorned with gold star stickers, or scratch-n'-sniff stickers in the shape of a bundle of grapes, proudly displaying the words "Grape Job!"

  • No Trophies for SOCOM at launch, to be patched later

"The trophies will become available via patch in the coming weeks," SCEA's Jennifer Clark told us when we inquired about the game's strange lack of Trophies. Yes, if you buy SOCOM Confrontation, you'll find that it's absent of the collectible Trophies everyone's been raving about. It's strange that Slant Six wasn't able to include Trophies into the final version of the game, but this may explain why we had so much trouble finding out the Trophy list so soon before the game's release. We're hoping that the Trophies that are enabled will take advantage of a retroactive rewards system. Undoubtedly, hardcore SOCOM fans are ready to spend hours in the online world of Confrontation. Of course, let Burnout Paradise teach a lesson: perhaps it's best not to expect retroactive Trophies to um ... y'know, work.
