  • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is hunting for Easter eggs

Last week, I made a huge mistake. It was the weekend of Easter, and I asked you what your favorite candy was instead of the much better tie-in question, "What are your favorite Easter eggs in gaming?" I failed you, but I hope you're willing to look past that. After all, it was you, the readers, who helped me see the error of my ways, and now I'm here to right what was wrong. So let's get started, shall we? I'm not sure I could pick a favorite Easter egg out of all that I've experienced in gaming, so I'll just go with the only ones that I purposefully seek out: the Easter eggs of the Halo games. When I saw the Legendary ending of Halo: Combat Evolved, I was giddy. I wasn't expecting it and, being fairly young at the time, I don't recall discovering any Easter eggs prior to it. Watching Johnson and an Elite tenderly embrace at what they thought would be their end will always stick out in my mind, and it inspired me to search for all the hidden jokes and references in the Halo series. Another one of my favorites: the subtle change from a marine yelling "we've got trouble" to "we've got trouble, right here in River City!" But then, I'm a sucker for musicals. So tell me, reader, what are you favorite/most memorable Easter eggs in gaming? Tell your story in the comments below, after checking out this week's selection of webcomics. This weekend is Easter, and you know what that means: family dinners, religious iconography, rabbits, rainbow-colored eggs, and more sugar-induced cavities than you can shake a chocolate-covered chunk of peanut butter at. It really is a smorgasbord with a little something for everyone. Me though, I'm all about the candy. My favorite kinds of candy are those that are either A) fruit flavored, B) gummy, C) sour, or D) all of the above. If I had to pick one kind I'd say ... that I couldn't pick just one. Zours, Kazoozles, Mike & Ike, Starburst, Shockers, Sour Patch Kids, Fruit Roll-Ups, Trolli Sour Apple Rings ... man, I'm gonna have to stop, all this drool on my keyboard can't be good for the laptop. What about you? What are you hoping to find in your Easter basket? Are you a lover of chocolate or are you like me and prefer snacks of the fruit-flavored variety? What to talk about this week here on Wrapup, huh? So many choices! There's PAX East 2014 going on, a Nintendo Direct earlier in the week gave us tons of new information regarding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. ... It's a tough call, but I think I'm actually going to talk about The Elder Scrolls Online. Or rather, the concept of ESO. See, I'm a huge MMO fan. Ask me what my favorite game of all time is and I'll always answer Star Wars Galaxies. The sense of (warning: game industry buzzword incoming) immersion and place was unrivaled, and I loved that I felt like I really was there on Tatooine, living in the Star Wars universe. Likewise, I've always loved the Elder Scrolls games, and found Tamriel to be an interesting place full of unique lore and designs. The dream of being able to live in Tamriel as I lived on Tatooine is now here, and while it's too early to give a review - though you're invited to read Contributing Editor Sinan Kubba's thoughts on the game if you're curious about its quality - I can honestly say it's reinvigorated my love for the series in a way that excites me. In the age of the Internet, we're seeing more and more games go online and offer connected experiences like The Elder Scrolls Online. My question to you is, do you feel this is a good thing or bad? Are you happy that ESO exists or offended by it? Are there any gaming franchises you'd love to see turned into an MMO? I myself would love to set up shop on the Citadel and roleplay as a humble storeowner in the Mass Effect universe, but then, I always did seek out endorsement from cosmic war veterans. Leave your thoughts below after checking out this week's webcomics. • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is going mobile

Alex Seropian, co-founder and former CEO of Bungie (you know, the company that made Halo and is now making Destiny) is working on a first-person shooter for mobile devices called Midnight Star. Seropian said it was "obvious" to himself and his team that core gamers would transition to the mobile space. Judging by our comments, you guys ... how to put this lightly ... disagree. Strongly. It got me thinking. See, I like mobile games, but I wouldn't call any of my favorite phone or tablet experiences something I enjoy the same way I enjoy a good console or PC game. I play Cut The Rope for a quick gaming fix, while Year Walk and The Room have shown that mobile games can be downright spooky - which is great for me, as I consider myself a horror fan. But whenever I tried to play Mass Effect: Infiltrator, Deus Ex: The Fall or any other games aimed at the so-called "core gamer" market, I found myself disappointed. I don't think mobile games are all bad, but I find they're at their best when they're not trying to ape the designs and control schemes of their console cousins. It's like potato chips and cookies: sometimes you want something sweet, sometimes you want something salty. Neither one is worse or better than the other, but I don't think there's too many people clamoring for Doritos Cool Ranch cookies or chocolate chip-flavored Ruffles. But enough about me, what do you think? Are you looking forward to Midnight Star? Love mobile games? Hate em? Do you see yourself transitioning to such games in the future? Leave your thoughts below, after you check out this week's webcomics. • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is predicting the future of virtual reality

Is it possible to make a Wrapup post this week that doesn't address the news of Facebook purchasing virtual reality startup Oculus? I don't think so; that is a pretty darn big virtual elephant in the virtual room. For those who need to get caught up, the long version of these events can be found here, but the short version is this: Oculus, a company heavily invested in bringing virtual reality headsets to consumers - primarily gamers - was purchased by Facebook for the princely sum of $2 billion. Which is ... kind of a lot. The thing is, everything regarding the Facebook acquisition of Oculus and what's going to happen is speculation. My two cents: I haven't tried VR, but I find the technology extremely intriguing. I, personally, wouldn't hesitate to pay the price of a new console for a headset that could make me feel like I was inside of the games I was playing. After news broke about Alien: Isolation coming this October, I realized there was a game that I could truly get excited about experiencing in virtual reality, even though, to be 100 percent clear, VR has not been confirmed for the game. I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise, and being able to walk around in sets inspired by the 1979 classic while also feeling like a Xenomorph was in the environment with me sounds like an absolute thrill and fanboy dream. If Facebook's money helps such an experience come to life in a bigger, better way, I'm all for it. That being said, I'm an early adopter type of consumer. I take new technology when I can get it, awful designs, bugs and all. And if there's one thing I have come to learn about people who are not early adopters, it's that convenience and unobtrusiveness reign supreme. As much as I love the idea of VR, it's not going to be convenient or unobtrusive to wear an Oculus Rift or a Project Morpheus. When you dive into the virtual world, you're shutting out the real one. It looks like a solitary, isolating experience, or a gimmicky treat like playing plastic instruments for Rock Band. But like I said, everything is speculation until the consumer version of the Rift comes out, and I myself have yet to try any VR, prototype or otherwise. I could be totally wrong! The important question is: what do you think? Leave your thoughts after checking out this week's selection of webcomics which, hey, look at that, feature a lot of jokes about Facebook buying Oculus! First the Oculus Rift, and now Sony has announced a piece of virtual reality teach with which to make us lose our heads. Not a day later, Dev Kit 2 of the Oculus Rift is available for pre-order. The future is now, my friends. Or, maybe it's this holiday. Or whenever these things actually come out, since neither device being shown is anything beyond a developer's kit prototype. Even so, it makes me excited for the possible future that VR technology could enable. I want to fly a spaceship or go skydiving from the comfort of my home. I want to become Link or watch a 360-degree movie. I want to see the future, and knowing that it won't just be Oculus exploring the potential of virtual reality makes me feel more at ease, like there's going to be company with me on the journey. And yes, I want to be a VR Trooper. What about you, though? Is VR something that excites you? Would you like to learn more about the topic, or do you wish it would go away? Mid last week, I got a tattoo. Well, I say got, but the appointment was to actually add to and work on one I'd already started. Two hours later, and I'm happy for the progress that's been made, but man is it hard to sleep when you have to be careful about how anything touches your back. Also, I have another hour and a half to go before the thing is done, so there's that to look forward to. When it's completed, this will be my ninth tattoo. I only have two others planned: one representing my love of music, and one representing my love of video games. The latter is something of a collage; a mash-up of all the different franchises and characters that I feel have defined either my gaming journey or the games industry as a whole. There's no-brainer inclusions like the Triforce and Mario, as well as some more subliminal references like a camera lying next to a quarterstaff and a constellation of stars that matches the pattern on a certain water-dwelling game hero. Point is, I love tattoos, and I'm excited to be so near to my (planned) completion. But what about you? Got any fond tattoo memories? Or maybe you hate em? Do you think gaming-themed tattoos are cool or corny? Leave your thoughts below, after checking out this week's webcomics selection! • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup can't keep up with this March madness

    03.09.2014

March 2014 has been a rough month for gamers. And by "rough," I mean "on your wallet." Plenty of quality games have hit the shelves and servers of the world already, and more are just around the corner. Earlier this week we were graced with the presence of South Park: The Stick of Truth, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and the second episode of season two of The Walking Dead. Titanfall is incoming, Dark Souls 2 can't wait to kill you, Yoshi's New Island will be there for the less masochistic among us, we've almost come to ground zero for Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, the list goes on. Unless you're some kind of ubermensch, you won't have the time, money or interest to play them all. So my question to you is, when there are too many good games, how do you pick which ones you're going to buy and/or play? If I had to choose, I personally might go for a sequel or HD remake over something totally new, because when it comes to sequels, I usually want to see where the story goes next, and in the case of HD remakes, I know I enjoyed it before so I know I can enjoy it again, this time with less pressure. Earlier today, fellow weekend warrior Thomas Schulenberg and I briefly discussed our collections of entertainment media. I have the largest collection of movies and TV shows among my friends with roughly 300 physical cases stored in nice, neat order on a bookshelf. Ironically, it's my game collection that's lacking. I currently hold about 80 or so games across all generations in physical form, which is pretty sad compared to some enthusiasts out there. And while I once considered myself a diehard physical-copies-only sort of gamer, I've found more and more that I'm comfortable with a library stored not on discs and cartridges, but hard drives and servers. My Steam collection is just as large as my physical collection, and I've even replaced several physical game copies with the digital PC version due to improvements in graphics or modding capability. What happened to me? What happened to us? What happened to my schoooooo? Why not share your thoughts on physical vs. digital game libraries after voting for this week's webcomics after the break? No, seriously. I thought it was a joke at first, but apparently Space Jam 2, starring LeBron James, is reportedly a real thing. Honestly, I don't know how to feel about it. I loved the first Space Jam, but it was a different time, and I was a different person. Still, the lure of nostalgia is strong with this one. Actually, the existence of a Space Jam 2 is just the latest example of our culture's fascination with bygone eras. Whether it's a sequel to an 18-year old movie or games with pixelated art styles, there's plenty of modern life that evokes the past. So I'm curious as to whether or not you feel it's a good thing. The Titanfall beta may have the Internet going bananas, but there's another beta currently going on that's garnered a little bit more of my attention: the Steam tags beta. If you need some catching up on this subject, here's the skinny: Valve implemented a beta which allows Steam users to tag games. The idea behind this was that by tagging games, users could more easily discover new ones that featured similar gameplay, ideas, graphics, etc. For example, if I'm the sort of person who enjoys first-person shooters, I could easily discover more first-person shooters by clicking on the, you guessed it, "first-person shooter" tag. The idea was good, but uh ... how to put this ... needed some tweaking. Here's the thing though: sometimes it takes a ridiculous situation to see how silly something really is. Gone Home was tagged as a "Patriarchy Smashing Simulator" on Steam, and that's ... well, a little silly. But at the same time, what kind of game is Gone Home? What about Stanley Parable? Crypt of the NecroDancer? Was the Mass Effect series a third-person shooter with RPG elements or an RPG with third-person shooter mechanics? Where, precisely, is the line between RPG and Action-RPG? Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. But I am curious to hear what you think! Are genres an outdated way of looking at things? How would you tag your favorite, or most-despised games? Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird, has decided to withdraw his immensely popular game from the app store. Although Nguyen didn't give a specific reason, he stated that it was not due to legal reasons and that he was not looking to sell the game off. The Internet's been a-buzz since Nguyen's announcement, with reactions both pleased and ... not-so-pleased. The explosion of popularity and rapid decline that Flappy Bird experienced makes me think of how fleeting the limelight can be. The Justin Biebers and One Directions of today are the Jesse McCartneys and New Kids On The Blocks of tomorrow - who, you ask? Exactly. So I say go forth, and be a fan of whatever it is you've got your sights set on - just realize that it'll come to an end someday, and enjoy it while you can. Take a lesson from Flappy Bird. Last week, I managed to discover a time machine. Now I'm here to tell you that I'm coming back to Earth, and I'm bringing all the powers of heck with me (sorry for language). I'm gonna save us all. *INCOMING TRANSMISSION* Alright, everyone. I warned you about the alien invasion. I broke out of my stasis pod. Now I'm here to update you on my escape progress. For awhile, things looked bad - the ship onto which I've been abducted is hopelessly labyrinthine, and it is most certainly not designed for bipedal mammals. Still, there is much that I've learned. For example: their species. I've discovered that the spider-banshee people of the Axmosium star cluster refer to one another as ... Spider-Banshees. I know, weird coincidence. They're also a technologically-inclined civilization, masters of not only space travel, but time travel. Yes dear readers, I have discovered within this ship a time machine. With it, I plan to escape and save the world. There's a catch, though: a person can't travel back through time as themselves. Quantum physics won't allow someone to survive the leap. So when I make this ... "quantum jump" through the time vortex, I'll have to possess someone else's body. Only when I've accomplished this person's life goals and learned a valuable lesson will I be able to make another jump. Knock on wood - or whatever this thing's made of - my next leap will be the leap home. Wish me luck, readers! *You notice a list of webcomics after the transmission ends. Merry post-holidays downtime, readers! With most of the gift-giving behind us, I've got a question for you. It's actually something I already asked on Twitter, but I'm still curious: What were you proudest to give someone this year? If you want to know where this question comes from, the answer is my brothers. While almost everyone else on my list had specific items they'd told me they wanted, my brothers were a bit more mum. Every time I asked, I was told to just get a gift card. A gift card to here, or a gift card to there. Thing is, I hate giving gift cards. To me, it feels like a last resort, and there's very little fun to be had in opening one. So instead, I had to really think about my brothers and their personalities, and try to pick a gift they would like. I ended up going with some sportswear for one, and Cards Against Humanity for the other. Both of my brothers were happy to receive surprise gifts, and I felt proud for picking out items that fit them well. Not only that, but thinking of and searching for the perfect present reminded me of many happy memories I had of my family. So that's my story about what I gave and why I was so pleased; what about you? Spread some holiday cheer in the comments after checking out this week's selection of webcomics. Earlier today, we posted the news that Clancy Brown, otherwise known as Mr. Krabs from Spongebob Squarepants, will be joining the cast of the Warcraft movie. Obviously, it's great when an actor can play a wide range of roles, and I'm sure whatever part Brown will play will be awesome and fun to watch. That being said, it's kind of weird when an actor you associate so heavily with a particular character or show winds up in something else. For example, did you ever see the movie Batman vs. Wolverine? Oh wait I'm sorry, they called that The Prestige. One of my favorite shows of all time is Tales From The Crypt. There are many, many reasons why this is the case, but one that I'll point out is that it has guest stars, and having guest stars means a whole lot of watching and saying, "Oh hey look, it's that guy." And when you say that, everyone in the room goes, "Oh yeah! That guy!" Everyone knows who you're talking about, even when nobody knows the actor's name. So I'm curious: who is your "that guy?" Ash Ketchum, eat your heart out; this comic about the lives of a Venusaur and the baby Charmander it adopts, all to the tune of "You Are My Sunshine," will teach you more about friendship, love and caring than that 11-year old and his electric rodent ever could.
