This week's announcement of the Mega Evolutions found in Pokémon X/Y shook the very foundations of our childhood. Certain Pokémon can evolve during battle before returning to their normal state? What is this, Digimon? As unexpected as it was, it's still great to see the Pokémon series try some new elements that are noticeable to more than just its hardcore following. Pokémon Black/White's rotation battles were interesting, but it still seems like Pokémon Gold/Silver's introduction of eggs, genders, dual battles and a quest spanning two regions was the biggest shake-up the series has ever seen. As amazing as those games were, they're 13 years old and we'd be happy to see them bested by the incoming X/Y. Now all we need is Pokémon Snap 2, Pokémon Stadium 3 (Pokémon Battle Revolution did not count) and a proper 3D Pokémon adventure and it'll feel like we never left grade school. Well, except for the disgusting absence of recess. Recount your favorite Pokémon memories with us after you read last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the jump! After burrowing into the past for almost a decade, the Pikmin series pops out of the ground once more this week with the release of Pikmin 3. It's odd that a franchise so accessible to children also contains some of the most horrid abominations ever hosted on a Nintendo console. It's alarmingly easy for the fun of collecting cute, inviting Pikmin to give way to the sudden discovery of a form of wildlife that mercifully only exists in fiction. In a way, that bait-and-switch of security to dread is almost part of Pikmin's charm. Share your tales of Pikmin genocide exploring nature below, or repress everything by reading last week's webcomics and voting for your favorite after the break!

It's fun to crack jokes about how the Summer Steam Sale cleared us all out, but does anyone else realize the raft of time we're recovering on is falling apart? A wave of games from top-notch developers is coming soon, and I can't feign indifference towards any of it. How am I going to pick which to snatch up and which to let wash by me? Do I explore the incoming work for the 360, 3DS and Wii U, or do I abandon what I already own and swim for a brand new console? It might be the worst thing I've ever complained about, but it stems from loving the hobby. We love games, but reality keeps us from exploring everything we'd like to. Bills are a menace, but the time associated with powering through another epic adventure might be the biggest hurdle. It's a choice we're faced with every holiday season, though, and considering the rise of the indie scene, I don't see it changing anytime soon. How will you wade through the ocean of content still coming our way this year? Will you prioritize your most anticipated games and spend a reasonable amount of time with them, or will you buy everything in sight and occasionally glance at all the games on your shelf that are still in shrink wrap? Or, you know, you could just put off thinking about it, read last week's webcomics, then vote for your favorite comic after the break! It seems customary to announce one's departure from the Webcomic Wrapup. May 26, 2012 feels like it was just yesterday (mostly because I just used a time machine yesterday, so it was May 26, 2012 for me). I have to say, we've done a lot together, Wrapup Wreaders. We ate pretty much all the burritos once, and attempted to crush our backlogs through Four in February (I promise I'll do better next year!). We picked our fantasy football teams and reflected on our favorite Halloween costumes. These were all good times, and I was always happy to deliver the webcomics to you weekly, but alas, the party has to end eventually. You'll see a new name around these parts: Thomas Schulenberg, Joystiq's new Weekend Editor. Be good to him, and he'll certainly take the Wrapup to heights greater than I could have ever hoped to achieve. While we all gather for one final group hug, check out last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the break! Something something something Steam Summer Sale. There's no good way to lead into this week's wrapup, right? Like a moth to the flame, I can't not write about the already-enticing sales on seemingly everyone's favorite distribution service. I'm even buying games that I'm not sure my measly computer can support (can someone tell me if Antichamber is weak PC-friendly?). So far, I've bought Don't Starve, Antichamber and StarDrive, and like the rest of you, I'm petrified at the idea that I may buy more games this week. That's a lot of burritos I'm opting out of to buy games on Steam. This week's wrapup question is painfully obvious: What sales are you taking advantage of on Steam this week, and what games are you hoping will be discounted? While you count your pennies, check out last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the break! I've noticed more folks blatantly asking one another about their turnip prices in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The stalk market isn't anything new to the series, as the option to ride the highs and lows of turnip prices has been one of the reliable ways to make money in Animal Crossing. Personally, I can't get into it, not when catching golden and rainbow stags on the island during the game's nighttime phases makes for a nice haul of bells, all without having to worry about time-shifting the game and spoiling turnips. Do those of you playing New Leaf feel the same? Am I missing out on the stalk market? While you show me the err of my ways, check out last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the break! As seen in the week's webcomics below, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has been the talk of the town lately. It's an excellent game, but I've encountered a problem with it recently: I can't upgrade my house any more than I already have. As a result, I've turned back to my duties as mayor of my town, but it just seems a little less exciting to me. I do have plenty of interior decorating and collecting to do in New Leaf, though, so I'll be able to keep up the alarming amount of "me-time" in the game that I maintain (at least, it's been alarming to my town's citizens). So, to you readers that are enjoying New Leaf: How are your towns and houses coming along? This week, Microsoft decided to change course on its DRM policies for the Xbox One, effectively negating any jokes the Internet had about the console's 24-hour check-in requirements. These sorts of widespread decisions by console manufacturers are incredibly rare, and in this case, the mood surrounding the upcoming console seemed to shift along with its DRM policies. Or did it? That's where our Wrapup question of the week comes in. You tell us, readers: Did Microsoft's decision to change its DRM system for the Xbox One influence your purchasing plans for this holiday season? We did it, readers. We survived E3 2013. While we still have plenty of leftover goodies from the week to deliver to you (our content ovens have been pre-heating all day), now seems like as good a time as ever to reflect on the news from the week. The EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft and Sony press conferences had a number of big moments that we'll be discussing for a long time, for starters. We've already wrapped up E3 2013 with our friends at Engadget, and your input has fueled plenty of discussions for weeks to come. So, this wouldn't be fun unless we had you folks help wrap up E3 with us, right? This week's Wrapup question is: What was your favorite announcement, game or moment from E3? With E3 2013 just around the corner, it's time to dust off the ENAE3K. While this is my first year attending the event, I'm passing this survival plan to you, readers. It's particularly useful for the ones staying home and eating sandwiches while refreshing the Joystiq front page. I assure you, I'm already jealous of you sandwich-eaters. Apologies to Microsoft, but it's impossible for us to hear "Xbox One" and not think of that amazingly terrible movie starring Jet Li. With the way Microsoft continues to compete for that fictitious "lone spot" in the living room, comparisons between The One and the Xbox One seem fitting, though. Last week, we tried naming the recently-announced system and were way off. This week, we need your help in figuring out what to call the console without referring to it as "Xbone," because that's just ridiculous. No, we don't want to call it "the One," either. We need to settle something, Wrapup readers. See, BBQ wings are amazing, right? Whether you're a huge fan of "my face is on fire" levels of heat or you just like a more mild, sweet BBQ sauce, as long as you're a meat-eater, you probably like wings. Wings are great. Still, there are two groups of people that don't always mix: Those that prefer boneless wings and those that prefer wings with bones. We're not picky, we'll eat both, but let's just say that if a genie were to grant us a lifetime supply of boneless wings at the cost of eradicating wings that have bones for the rest of the world forever, we'd push that big red button in a heartbeat. • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is totally illogical

    05.04.2013

Recent Nerd Rage and Corpse Run comics brought up an interesting point about flawed logic in video games. There are some games that force you to accept their odd premises in order to forge ahead in their stories. In the case of these comics, not being able to combine items to solve puzzles in Zelda or using the work of young adventurers as the basis of a Pokemon professor's research seems questionable to their respective artists. However, many of these games don't give us much of an opportunity to question their flaws; we just have to accept that these details don't always add up for the sake of the story as a whole. So, this week's question is: What are some of your favorite examples of flawed logic in games? So hungry we could eat an entire chicken right off the ground, Mike Haggar-style. Speaking of our favorite Final Fight character, did anyone else find it odd when classic brawlers from games of old wouldn't think twice to eat the food they found on the ground?Right now, it actually seems appealing, which should say something about how much we've had to eat today. With the recent release of Out of the Park Baseball 14, I've found that my free time lately has been drastically cut. It's hard to explain how a baseball sim like OOTP 14 can be so cripplingly addictive. For some, it's a management program that might look just as boring as a Google Spreadsheet. To me, it's an incredible stats-riddled sports simulation game that delivers a fun coaching/GM experience.Anyone that has played games in the NFL Head Coach, Front Office Football or Football Manager series knows what's up; these games are certainly unique, but provide hours of fun. It's my first time playing the game, and I've been surprised at how a game as old as this 1993 LucasArts classic can consistently make me laugh.Once I'm done with Day of the Tentacle, I'll certainly need a suggestion or two on what to play next. Every once in a while (or in my case, roughly twice a week), I like to eat frozen pizza. We're not talking about upper-tier frozen goodness, often represented by the likes of Digiorno. I'm talking about really cheap pizza, the kind that doesn't always come with enough cheese. I know what I'm getting into with this sorry excuse for food, with potential heartburn and a case of low self-esteem as possible side-effects for my dining choice. I can live with that.Still, I like to dress my pizza up when I can. Adding more cheese, veggies or pepperoni can go a long way in turning sub-par pizza into average, or dare I say, enjoyable pizza. I'm sure I'm not alone here, but if I am, I'll gladly accept cheap frozen pizza as a guilty pleasure of mine. It's been a long week. After spending last weekend in Boston at PAX East, a good chunk of the Joystiq crew flew to San Francisco to help y'all stay in the know on all the news from GDC. After a big trip like this, it's easy to come home (as long as your flight isn't delayed) and immediately crash on the nearest couch, falling into a deep sleep for the next week or so.Rest assured, it's back to our regularly-scheduled programming here at Joystiq, but I'll be honest, I didn't attend GDC and still have a carry-on to unpack from PAX.
