In case you missed the news, it was revealed this week that the NSA has been spying on gamers, trying to assess whether we've got terrorists among our ranks. And if so, how good are those terrorists at a 25-man Onyxia run? The subject has been made into a national conversation about the rights of the individual, expectations of privacy in a world going digital, and the security of the nation. It's also been ripe material for plenty of jokes, as you're about to find out when you peruse this week's selection of webcomics. This week also gave us another wave of YouTube copyright claims, where prominent Let's Play personalities had their content stricken from their channel. It, like the NSA spying on people, hasn't gone over very well. Such are the challenges of our modern age and emergent businesses - like LP videos on YouTube. How about you all? Got any ideas for how we can cope and move forward as a society? Oh right, the webcomics. Those things. The things you came here to see. The apartment is very loud at the moment. Loud and furry, for there is a puppy roaming about, nibbling on toes and wagging his little puppy tail. Why is there a puppy, you ask? Because that is what was given as a Christmas present, and it's kinda hard to keep a puppy under wraps, both literally and figuratively. But it makes me wonder: now that we're into December and the holiday season proper, what are some favorite presents you've opened early? It's okay that you peeked, we won't tell. So spill the beans: what did you get, and how did you find out? Tell us your tales after checking out this week's selection of webcomics! So Black Friday is over, we're all in the clear and we can calm down until the actual holidays hit, right? Wrong, chump. Black Friday cannot be contained to a single day! Many retailers are holding Black Friday-level savings all weekend, and we begin next week with Cyber Monday. Add in the fact that several stores decided to open at 6 p.m. on Thursday, thus earning the event the nickname "Black Thriday," and what more is there to say other than yaaaaaaay consumerism? You will see many, many sales between now and the end of the year. So I just wanted to put out this friendly reminder to be wise with your money. Most of these items will still be around weeks and months down the road, so you don't need to break the bank to ... hang on, that thing I want is how much off? Sorry guys, I gotta go. I have a ... food in the oven. Why not occupy yourselves with this week's selection of webcomics while I'm gone? • Push two cats together to create a new one in Mew-Genics

Team Meat's Edmund McMillen recently attempted to explain how the Super Meat Boy developer's next game, Mew-Genics, operates. Naturally, McMillen opted to describe the game in webcomic form, noting that it is about "cat genetics and the forced evolution of the most adaptive species on this whole planet." The comic illustrates players' ability in the breeding game to mash two cats together in order to create a new kitten, care for them as well as enter them into battles and pageant-style contests. Team Meat previously referred to Mew-Genics as a "cat lady sim" that blends elements of "The Sims and Pokemon with a sprinkling of Animal Crossing and a dash of Tamagotchi." McMillen likened Mew-Genics to an unreleased Nintendo game called Cabbage that was in development by Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto for the canceled Nintendo 64DD system. Cabbage was a multiplayer breeding game that was expected to allow players to take their creature on the go with their Game Boy systems. Mew-Genics is in development for Steam, iOS and Android, and will launch in 2014.

The Xbox One launch has come and gone, and here we stand with our feet at the edge of a new generation. More than one million people have picked up Microsoft's successor to the 360, and we're bound to see more and more number-crunching, more statistics, and more banner-waving from all sides now that both the PS4 and Xbox One are out in the wild. I asked this as part of a joke in an article earlier today, but now I'm genuinely curious: since all of the major players (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) have released their newest systems, does that mean that we can stop referring to them as "next-gen" consoles? These new machines overlap support-wise with the previous generation - Sony and Microsoft moreso than Nintendo - but is that reason enough to continue calling the current toy a "next-gen" one? Tell me your thoughts on gaming's generations in the comments below; after you've checked out this week's selection of comics, of course. Oh yeah, and Doctor Who turned 50 this weekend! The PlayStation 4 launch was yesterday, and your friendly neighbordhood Joystiq staff has been hard at work letting you know what we think. I picked up my system at midnight from the local Best Buy and couldn't help but be all smiles. Stupid, stupid smiles. I don't even own any games for it yet! I just like opening stuff. Seriously though, in the midst of these "console wars," it's so easy to get down on each other or doubt your purchase. But all that negativity just washed away when I opened up the PS4, and I was more than happy to get it settled into its new home. I know I'll have the same enthusiasm and same stupid smile next week when I pick up my Xbox One, and to those of you who've chosen differently than myself, I wish you nothing but joy and excitement. The next generation is here. Let's all play. Oh yeah, here's some webcomics too! Which one is your favorite? Greetings, from the world of tomorrow!! Hail, friend! I am a visitor to your time, having traveled here from the far, far-off future of next week. I picked up a PlayStation 4, you see, and just had to come back in time to tell you about it. It's ... Wait. No, this is a bad idea. I can't tell you about the future! What if you receive an almanac and win big money by gambling when you know who's going to win? Or what if we get stuck re-living the same day over and over until we learn a valuable life lesson? Or you get so excited that you decide to build your own time machine so you can get one before I come back in time to tell you about them, which creates a paradox and - aaaaaaaa!! No, I'm sorry. I can't tell you what the PlayStation 4 is like. Too much is at stake. You'll just have to wait. Hey, why not check out and discuss these webcomics while we all sit patiently for November 15 to roll around and see for ourselves what Sony's next-gen console will bring? And hey, feel free to bring up your favorite time travel movie references in the comments too. So much candy. Oh my goodness, so much candy. Halloween is the best, isn't it? Just the best. And now it's over, which is sad, but that's okay, because we have memories and tummy aches to tide us over for awhile. I don't live in a particularly large city, so unfortunately there weren't a whole lot of what I would call creative costumes out and about on Thursday evening. Still, there were some people who got pretty clever. I saw someone dressed as Vine sensation BatDad by wearing a Batman mask on his face and a giant fake iPhone around his head and shoulders. I also witnessed someone dressed as The Doctor from Doctor Who. This devoted fan built a life-size TARDIS (well, it was life-size on the outside), which he then had a friend wheel into his girlfriend's place of work, where he stepped out and proposed. So that was pretty cool. What did you all do for Halloween? See any good costumes? If you've got pics to share (tasteful only, please!), feel free to link below. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Judging from some of my old costumes, it should've been clear to my parents I was always going to turn out to be a nerd. We're talking Sub-Zero, Sonic the Hedgehog, even Bucky O'Hare! Side note: Hey, remember Bucky O'Hare?! And it's not just the opportunity to dress up, Halloween is also a holiday where we get to scare ourselves silly. In my hometown, we used to have an annual haunted house put together by the local families, and man, if it wasn't great. I think my favorite year was when I played the part of a chestburster victim in the room my dad had constructed. I would scream for help and right as the Xenomorph (which was made from a painted sock and a Slinky, by the way) was "born," the lights went out and my dad would use a squirt gun hidden behind the wall to make people think they'd been hit with blood. Ah, good times. Good times. Family bonding. What about you? Got any plans for Halloween? Whatcha dressin' up as? First Watch Dogs was delayed, and then Driveclub likewise drove into the far-off future of 2014. Pretty soon we're going to hear that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems themselves will be delayed into 2014. Oh man, did I just jinx it? Quick, throw salt over your shoulder! Soak in a tomato juice bath! Do something, anything! Watch Dogs was on my to-play list for next-gen consoles, as it was for many. While I personally don't plan on cancelling my pre-orders despite not having the next-gen game I was most excited about available at launch, I've heard people say they are, and I understand such disgruntled murmurs that have come forth from the dark corners of the Internet. So tell me: Have the delays of Watch Dogs and Driveclub impacted your decision on whether or not to pick up a system at launch? Ponder that whilst perusing this week's webcomics, won't you? No. Nope. Nuh-uh. We're not gonna talk about Pokemon X / Y. We're not going to talk about how it's out today, available to purchase from either your favorite retailer or the 3DS eShop for $40. We're not going to talk about the high review scores it's gotten. We're not going to give each other friend codes in the comments to make trading easier. We're not going to talk about which version is better *cough*X*cough* or which one has cooler mega evolutions *coughcough*X*cough* or exclusive monsters to catch *COUGH*X*COUGHCOUGH*. Actually, I have no idea which version I'll even be picking up, or when I'll do so. But it's always fun to get into the spirit of friendly poke-based competition, yeah? It's like cheering for your high school football team, if your team was made up of birds made of lightning, living swords, and fish that turn into dragons. Catch 'em, catch 'em, gotta catch 'em all - Pokemon! While Pokemon X / Y won't be out for a bit longer, the reviews have started flooding in, and it looks like a good time to be a poke-fan. I myself haven't played a Pokemon game since Pokemon Red and Blue, and for a long time there I considered myself a poke-purist, acknowledging only the original 151 and no others. A new Pokemon game on the horizon makes me think back on the times I've had to admit that, you know what? This week, we got not one, not two, but three peeks at how Valve and its digital distribution platform, Steam, plan to dominate the living room. Regardless of whether you believe SteamOS, Steam Machines, or the Steam Controller will do well, one thing is clear: this ain't your daddy's console war. With such a heavy focus on the PC market and a Linux-based operating system from Valve's end, an entertainment and television-focused Xbox One, and a gaming-centric PlayStation 4, it hardly seems appropriate to compare today's market to the old Nintendo vs. Sega days. We get all range of ages visiting this site, so I'm curious: how do you see the console "wars" today? How would you compare them to the battles of yester-year? What do you think the next generation's fight will look like, or do you think there even will be a next generation? I did all I could to avoid it, I swear. "Did you see Miley Cyrus' new music video?" people would ask, usually in a huffy, indignant tone. Nope. "But she--" Nope. "I can't believe she--" Nope. I'd had enough of the sensationalism that came with celebrity culture a long time ago and knew there was little to nothing worthwhile to discuss about some singer's music video. Of course, that was before I saw it. Now that I, and presumably you, have seen it, you know what? Yep, I was right: nothing to see here folks, move along. The world of Hollywood is a strange one, always rocking with some "scandal" that fades with time. Whether it's a rock star's sexual moves on-stage or in a video, a starlet's trip to the slammer, a celebrity couple's baby, or who got work done where, there's always something new to gossip about, and it's almost always inconsequential. So there's this video game coming out Tuesday called Grand Theft Auto 5. Don't know if you've heard of it. Anyways, it's all about crime and gangs and some roughneck ne'er-do-wells, so I thought this would be the perfect time to talk about times when we've been... well, less than perfect. When I was a young'un, I was a frequent visitor to the local swimming pool. I was also a frequent lover of AirHeads candy, which the pool happened to sell. Waiting, watching, stalking the counter like a big cat in the savannah, I waited for the perfect opportunity to strike. While the lifeguards were busy, I snuck through the gate, reached up and took both cherry and "mystery white" AirHeads. I quickly ran out to the sidewalk and reveled in my sweet, delicious victory... for all of ten seconds, before I felt guilty enough to sneak back in and return the .20 worth of candy I had stolen. While you confess your crimes - hopefully minor, and nothing you can be persecuted for - take a moment to enjoy this week's webcomics, and vote for your favorite after the jump. So I checked my calendar today, and well, did you know we're almost halfway through September? That's just two months away from the release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Time to go stake a spot in line at your favorite retailer and start camping out. Come on, waiting in line is fun! Don't believe me? Here's an example: In 2008, I was visiting family up in New York for a summer vacation. I love the city, so there were many days I hopped a train and went to experience all the Big Apple had to offer. One early morning, on my way to buy tickets for Wicked, I noticed a large line starting to form outside the Virgin Megastore. I asked a gentleman what he was standing in line for, and he explained that Metal Gear Solid 4 was releasing at midnight, and Hideo Kojima would be on-site for autographs. Needless to say, I spent the rest of my day - and night! - on that Times Square street corner. I made new friends, played card games, and even messed with people who asked what I was in line for by telling them it was the American Idol audition line. So go ahead, start your camp-out. Don't call them space zombies. The Mordesh do not like that, not one little bit. If you do, you might find yourself injected with something glowing and green that does unpleasant things to your body. These are the lessons that we're taking from today's WildStar webcomic, which picks up with Mordesh alchemist Victor Lazarin giving us a glimpse into the mindset of this space zo... technologically undead race. It's amusing, it's colorful, and it's going to leave you hanging until part three. Discussion question for the whole class: After reading parts one and two, which race do you sympathize with the most? Do the ends justify the means? Should fictional animal rights organizations get involved after witnessing these experiments?

Earlier this week, one of my dearest and best friends moved away. He and his girlfriend - now fiancee - were heading to the eastern edge of the state so they could start up their life together. At the same time, a dear black rabbit by the name of Cole was also packing his life up into boxes. I put on a good face for my friend and waved goodbye without a tear, but once Animal Crossing: New Leaf popped up on the 3DS and my girlfriend and I realized that we simply could not ignore our friend leaving, even by escaping to a fantasy land of talking animals and bug hunts, we began to cry. Sometimes it's the little things that get ya. This story isn't actually as sad as it seems, as our friend will still visit us, and we regularly keep in touch via this magical techno-beast we call "the Internet." Still, it was a heart-touching moment, brought on by a video game character who had no real emotional tie to us until we mentally linked him to a real-life friend. Video game food is absolutely disgusting. Have you ever noticed that? It's amazing the Belmonts never succumbed to food poisoning after eating roast chicken that must've been sitting in a castle for what, a couple hundred years? And how about these Streets of Rage miscreants, eating out of the garbage? Yeah, real nice lesson for the kids there, fellas. In BioShock Infinite, drinking coffee lets you use freaking superpowers?! What nonsensical tomfoolery is this? I don't know. Maybe I'm just bitter. I'm lactose intolerant, I hate mushrooms - no true-to-character Mario cosplays for me - and I'm overall just a flat-out picky eater. I don't think I could ever be a video game character.
