Gadget Rewind 2005: Samsung YEPP YP-W3 (limited edition)
In 1999, Samsung launched the YEPP series aiming to deliver some of the smallest MP3 players on the market. These devices went beyond mere MP3 playback functionality with built-in FM tuners and voice recorders. By 2005, however, Samsung was looking for a better way to make its YEPP players stand out from the portable media players crowding the market. Its solution was the limited edition YP-W3: a diamond-studded MP3 player fashioned in the style of a pocket watch.
Samsung's YP-MB2 Android PMP spotted again in the wild, inches ever closer to release
It ain't the first time this chef-d'oeuvre has been spotted in the wild, but it's the first time that we're confident in believing the YP-MB2 is legitimate. The smoke that leads to fire is getting harder to duck under, and for all intents and purposes, this here device is a Galaxy S sans cellular connectivity. We're told that a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel camera and Android OS will be featured, and it sure feels like it'll be released first in South Korea. Apple may be planning a Fall event for the next big iPod announcement, but at least this go 'round some presumably worthwhile competition will be breathing down its neck. Now, if only we knew a price...
Samsung YP-MB2 appears at Korean e-tailer, specs and release date in tow? (update: first pics?)
Astute Samsung fans may have noticed an August 11th date circulating the web, and taken it to mean the company will then officially announce the Samsung Galaxy Tab. As it turns out, there's at least one more possibility: the YP-MB2 portable media player, spotted at Korean portal Daum and supposedly ready to launch on the very same day. While rumors surrounding the possible iPod touch competitor have swirled for weeks, all we knew for sure was that it was a GPS and WiFi-capable Android 2.1 MID with a four-inch Super AMOLED screen. Now, it looks like it could be everything we wanted in a PMP -- a Galaxy S missing only the bits that made it a phone -- and capable of decoding DivX, XviD, OGG and FLAC with that 1GHz Hummingbird processor. It's still unlikely we'll ever see it stateside with its T-DMB antenna inside, but if a pared-down version made to the US we'd be most happy to give it a try. Sadly, even the Korean version's just a particularly likely rumor for now, so you'll have to make do with optimistic thoughts and the leaked video below. Update: Samsung Hub spotted what might be the very first real picture of the media player at Korean blog, and sure enough it's looking nice and iPod-like. Spot a high-res version after the break.
Yepp, Samsung's working on another PMP -- but this one's a four-inch Android with AMOLED
Samsung's interstellar voyage with Android has just begun, it seems -- after a host of smartphones and a freshly announced tablet, it looks like the OS will cameo in a new Yepp PMP. The YP-MB2 was recently spotted in the databases of the Bluetooth SIG, where it's described as "a multi functional Mobile Internet Device" with GPS, Wi-Fi, TouchWiz 3.0 and a huge four-inch AMOLED touchscreen. Digging deeper into the technical documents, we can see it's got Android as well -- oh, and Bluetooth, of course. As the geographic availability section reads "Asia" and the unit's "MB" designation typically means South Korea's T-DMB, we don't expect to ever see it stateside, but when the device surfaces next you can probably expect it to look like a larger one of these.
Samsung R0 not-so-boldly goes where most PMPs have gone before it
Samsung's certainly got the portable media player design down to a cold, cold science. There isn't much in the way of artistic license here, so let's get on with the specs, shall we? 2.6-inch TFT LCD, microSD slot, FM radio, second-language acquisition programs, text / photo viewer, and video codec support including DivX, XviD, and H.264. Your color choices, with the appropriately inappropriate adjectives, are Indie Black, Techno Silver, and Rap Pink. Korean-only, this little guy will line shelves at KRW139,000 (US $120) with 4GB internal memory, and KRW179,000 (US $155) for 8GB.
Samsung YP-R1 get first unboxing, approving review
You should already be familiar with (or able to guess) the YP-R1's specs and pricing, so we'll just head straight to the good stuff. Our colleagues at MovePlayer handled a pink sample of the device and liked its 720 x 480 uncompressed video playback, slim casing, DJ utility (your use of which will be inversely proportional to your age), and the host of extra features like FM radio, voice recording and photo organizer. Their one major gripe related to scrolling around in landscape mode, but all in all they found it a very competent, sophisticated-looking entry into the PMP market. [Via PMP Today]
Samsung's AMOLED-packin' YP-M1 PMP available in Korea, secret sauce still unknown
Surely we aren't the only technophiles in attendance champing at the bit to find out if Samsung's fresh YP-M1 has some of NVIDIA's hotness inside, but it seems as if we'll still have to wait a bit longer to find out. Right on cue, the AMOLED-equipped portable media player has launched over in South Korea, bringing with it a laundry list of supported file formats, a WQVGA panel, up to 32GB of inbuilt storage and even a DMB TV tuner. If anyone feels like sashaying over to Seoul in order to crack one open and find out what it's really made of, then by all means, be our guest. Just try not to wander too close to that DMZ -- we hear Bill Clinton's rescue fees are through the roof.
Samsung M1 PMP to challenge Zune HD with some Tegra of its own?
Samsung's launched a teaser page for its YP-M1 media player (look familiar?), and while a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen is impressive in its own right, it's the mention of a NVIDIA chipset that has us most intrigued, especially given Samsung's earlier promise that a Tegra-based device was in the works. There isn't an indication that these are one in the same just yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to find that CPU packed away somewhere inside. Other known details at this point include a DMB TV tuner, 8GB of storage (at least for the base model), Samsung's TouchWiz UI, text-to-speech functionality, Bluetooth, and DivX support -- not a bad spec list considering it'll likely be up against the definitively Tegra-based Zune HD. Currently up in the air is any word of a price or release date (let along a release 'round here), although it seems Samsung could have more to say on August 13th. [Via DAP Review]
Leaked Samsung YP-M1 shows a more colorful spin on its DAP lineup
We can't say we've ever been too excited by Samsung's Yepp series -- not that it's bad, just nothing particularly worth writing home about. If this pic is any indication of what's to come, however, we are suddenly a bit more interested. The story starts in late June, where an Anything but iPod forum member found a Bluetooth SIG for a then unknown "Samsung MP3 Player" with a 3.3-inch widescreen display and the name YP-M1. Then, just a few days ago on the same thread, a newcomer posts the above picture, presumably being the M1 itself. From what we can glean, it'll be a touch screen with a built-in mic (for the voice recorder) and support for flash. That's not a lot to go by, frankly, but it's hard to see where Sammy's P series would fit with this on the horizon.[Thanks, Yuki]
Samsung's upcoming YP-R1 uncovered, just barely worth the effort
There's nothing particularly offensive about this DAP, but we can't imagine it changing anyone's life -- and really, is that too much to ask out of a portable audio player? After catching wind of this upcoming YP-R1 from Samsung, the fine folks at DAP Review did a bit of sleuthing to pair up the specs with a photo, and it's all pretty traditional: 8GB of flash storage, a 2.7-inch 400 x 240 touchscreen display, a good amount of video and audio codecs, TV-out, Bluetooth, FM, e-book reader and even some games. Supposedly it'll be out in the UK on July 30th for £109.99 (about $181 US). Like we said, pretty standard stuff, but who knows, maybe Samsung will surprise us all with a new UI theme or something.
Samsung YP-Q1 La Fleur edition shows its efflorescence
A floral Samsung YP-Q1? Yepp, it is. The company's penchant for prettying up its PMP series continues with the YP-Q1 "La Fleur" edition. It's got a new casing and matching UI, but we're not expecting a fresh bouquet to win us over after a disappointing hands-on with it last April. Mum's the word on pricing or availability.
Samsung U4 DAP emerges on Korean website
If you found yourself infatuated with Samsung's YP-U3, you're sure to love the U4... we think. There's a complete dearth of information regarding the device itself, but given that it already has a placeholder and image on the outfit's Korean Yepp site, we'd say there's a pretty good chance it'll be getting real soon enough. Samsung to release T-DMB-packin' YP-P2 in South Korea
When we asked you to list the things you'd change about Samsung's YP-P2, a number of you yearned for mobile TV. Granted, you'd have to set up shop in South Korea for your dream to be fully fulfilled, but Samsung's definitely making it possible. The YP-P2 DMB will arrive packing an obligatory T-DMB mobile TV tuner for youngsters and hipsters alike to find their favorite program when those hundreds of albums grow stale. We're hearing that the unit will feature a 3-inch touchscreen along with Bluetooth 2.0 and your choice of black or white motifs. Price wise, you'll be laying down ???239,000 ($231), ???309,000 ($299) or ???389,000 ($377) for the 4GB, 8GB or 16GB version.
Samsung T10 goes floral for spring
It rains every day and the birds won't shut up -- yeah, spring's here, and Samsung's celebrating by dressing up the T10 in this fetching black and purple floral number. Details are scarce, as the "La Fleur Special Edition" of the well-regarded PMP isn't official yet, but we'd expect to see it pop up rather soonish.[Via PMP Today]

Considering that Samsung's YP-P2 just might be the most updated PMP of all time, we're guessing that a lot of things that users would have changed just months ago have already been done by the powers that be. Samsung's YP-P2 coming in 16GB flavor soon
Samsung fans, your wildest dreams have come to fruition. Word on the street is that the company's do-it-all PMP, the YP-P2, will be getting an update in the form of a new 16GB model. The new player -- which boasts features like a 3-inch WQVGA screen, Bluetooth 2.0 support, and H.264, OGG, and WMV playback -- will cost somewhere in the vicinity of $347. There's no word on a street date or price for US or European markets, but when we know something, you'll know something.[Via PMP Today]
Samsung planning firmware updates for YP-P2
It looks like Samsung's snazzy YP-P2 just became even more attractive, as folks still on the fence (and even those that aren't) can reportedly look forward to a number of upcoming firmware updates that promise to add even more functionality. Apparently, the P2 will be hit with an update this December that enables a Bluetooth connection to one's mobile phone, BT file exchanges and the addition of an e-dictionary (saywha?). In late January of 2008, you can expect an upgraded Touch UI along with FM recording / playback. The elusive "Third Wave" update is set to land next March, but as you can tell from the photo to the right, Sammy's just lettin' your imagination run wild with this one. Samsung's YP-P2 gets unboxed
Just days after hitting Amazon, Samsung's YP-P2 is getting a proper unboxing. TheGirl over at YJzone was able to secure the oh-so-slim player and managed to curb that enthusiasm just long enough to snap pictures of the entire opening process. Samsung's YP-P2 available on Amazon
We know you can't wait to get your sweaty, smearing mitts all over Samsung's little YP-P2, AKA the "palm theater" (the company's words, not ours). Well, it looks like you won't have to wait much longer, as the eighth wonder of the media player world has just made an appearance on Amazon.com, with an option to put the 8GB, widescreen, touch sensitive, Bluetooth equipped iPod-challenger in your cart and do some serious checking out (provided you have an extra $249.99 laying around). Now, don't go spilling your beverage on yourself rushing over to the site, because even though you can pay for the thing, Amazon is still listing the player as "In stock soon," so while you'll be able to impress friends and family members with the news of your purchase, you won't actually be able to show it to them.
Keepin' it real fake, part LXXV: MA-727 apes Samsung's T9B
There's blatant knockoffs, and then there's blatant knockoffs. As you can probably tell, this is most certainly a case of the latter, as the so-called creators of the MA-727 didn't even bother to take their own photo. Instead, it looks pretty clear that they simply doctored Samsung's own snapshot of the T9B, threw a pink miniSD card down beneath, and called it original. Sure, it can supposedly handle just about every format under the sun and touts a 2.4-inch display, built-in speaker, FM tuner, voice recorder, rechargeable Li-ion, and anywhere between 128MB and 2GB of internal storage, but we wouldn't recommend pulling the trigger on this one unless you've got more money than sense.[Via PMPToday]
