Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,131 new signups bringing the total to 10,967,242 signups. A peak concurrency of 56,953 at 1:50PM, and a minimum concurrency of 30,097 at 1:35AM. Median concurrency for the day was 41,504. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 3.06 (lower is better). This should by all rights have been a record day for Second Life. Usage and popularity have been trending upwards, and Sunday should have seen new record peak concurrencies. It came close, true, but the grid problems more or less put the kibosh on it. From talking with residents through the day, IMs and emails I've received, it seems that Linden Lab's communications over the weekend are considered by some to be "Not even good enough to call pathetic" as one put it. Another said, "Shouldn't they at least say something? Anything? For all we know there's nobody there today and nobody cares."

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 18,609 new signups bringing the total to 10,949,625 signups. A peak concurrency of 53,417 at 2:35PM, and a minimum concurrency of 28,502 at 3:10AM. Median concurrency for the day was 42,825. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 3.04 (lower is better). A bad day all around. Network and website problems early on, then a series of database crashes through the day. The database clusters are supposed to be resistant to this sort of thing - but apparently today was not such a day. Splenda, the sweetener brand has opened in Second Life, with a contest. Episode 19 of our Second Life podcast, On The Inside, is available today, featuring special guest Rainbow Drake, and the topic is NaNoWriMo.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,178 new signups bringing the total to 10,931,016 signups. One week median hourly signup rates have slipped slightly to about 950 signups/hour. That puts the 11 millionth signup somewhere early on Tuesday, 20 November. It wouldn't be unexpected to see a jump in signups over the weekend. Friday is usually the slowest day for signups overall, with signups peaking on Wednesdays. A peak concurrency of 52,276 at 2:40PM, and a minimum concurrency of 29,273 at 12:30AM. Median concurrency for the day was 40,889. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.79 (lower is better). Some strange grid behaviour in the early hours. Almost certainly network-related. Just before Noon, Linden Lab announced that it was going to assign new IP addresses to a large number of servers. That work commenced around 1PM and is still ongoing in batches. Professor Edward Castronova needs a female fantasy dwarf avatar. Don't ask.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,758 new signups bringing the total to 10,913,838 signups. Median hourly signup rates remain relatively stable, with the 11 millionth signup still due on Monday, 19 November. A peak concurrency of 52,447 at 2:05PM, and a minimum concurrency of 29,035 at 1:35AM. Median concurrency for the day was 40,214. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.75 (lower is better). There were assorted minor glitches and bumps throughout the day, but nothing like Wednesday's issues. Thursday's planned short-notice maintenance was aborted before commencement - it's been postponed and it is uncertain when the work will take place. Linden Lab published information about minimum, maximum and median frame-rates for different sorts of graphics hardware, as reported back from the Second Life viewer. Robert Leatherwood has failed to respond to served papers, and Eros LLC is moving for judgement against him.

Yesterday in Second Life there was: 17,845 new signups bringing the total to 10,895,611 signups. Median signup rates were just under 1,000 per hour. The 11 millionth signup is due at approximately 1:30pm, Monday 19 November at current rates. A peak concurrency of 52,600 at 1:55PM, and a minimum concurrency of 8,017 at 4:55AM. Median concurrency for the day was 39,563. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 5.13 (lower is better). In the early hours of the morning, a major network failure (possibly hardware related) killed logins to the Second Life grid, and dropped most user connections. Obviously the witching hour for hardware. It was announced that the grid will be undergoing maintenance on short-notice. Quite probably related to the network failure. That starts in just a few hours. As expected, the Windlight renderer was re-released today in a fresh First Look viewer. It might totally destroy any frame rates you might have had, but damn it is pretty! Yes, a bit of a name and timeslot change for the daily wrap. Don't be alarmed. It all works out better this way.
