YouTube’s Originals division is working on a slate of COVID-19-related shows. After YouTube launched the #withme campaign, it saw a huge increase in watch-time, Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at YouTube, told Deadline. The new COVID-19-related content will take advantage of the #withme traffic, and allow YouTube to produce shows that can be filmed remotely.
YouTube's latest series has musicians covering their birthday chart-toppers
YouTube might have a new, simple way to hook people on an original series: pack it full of big-name musicians. The video giant has introduced a Birthday Song series that, as the name implies, has artists covering the top song from the day they were born. The initial song is no small challenge, and will make some viewers feel old -- YouTube will have Lewis Capaldi covering the Chemical Brothers' 1996 hit "Setting Sun." Capaldi has somehow turned the big beat classic into a "slow and sad" piece, YouTube's Luke Hyams told Deadline, and it's an ironic choice when "Setting Sun" vocalist Noel Gallagher has ribbed Capaldi about his maudlin music style.
YouTube's series on AI with Robert Downey Jr. is finally available
If you've ever had a question about artificial intelligence or how it works, YouTube's latest Originals series, The Age of A.I., tries to answer those questions. The new eight-part show, which is available to watch today after a lengthy wait, features Robert Downey Jr. as he attempts to demystify terms like machine learning and computer vision while showing off some of the latest advancements in the field.

YouTube debuts the trailer for its first interactive film
YouTube has released the first trailer for its upcoming special, A Heist with Markiplier. As with Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, you'll be able to decide how the film ends by making decisions along the way. In a callback to classic full-motion video (FMV) games of yesteryear, most of the scenes are filmed from a first-person perspective and feature the YouTube personality adopting the persona of a cat burglar.
YouTube’s Johnny Cash documentary premieres November 11th
A feature-length documentary about the legendary Johnny Cash is on the way to YouTube. The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash features interviews with the singer-songwriter's family and collaborators, along with newly unearthed archive footage and an original score from Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. It delves into the Man in Black's triumphs and spiritual endeavors along with his addiction problems and personal tragedies.
YouTube Originals will be free to watch starting on September 24th
Earlier this year, YouTube promised to make its original shows -- exclusive to paying Premium members at the moment -- available to the public as ad-supported programming. Now, the Google subsidiary is staying true to its word and making all original series, movies and live events released on September 24th and beyond accessible to non-paying members.
