Move over
iDJ (and
iDJ2), there's a new
iPod DJ mixer in town, and it's only a year late to the game (albeit significantly cheaper). The Gemini iTRAX is finally hitting shelves, and brings the noise to the wheels of, um, polycarbonate with two phono ins, USB pass-through, and iPod (with video) support. They're asking $230 for the thing, but it's already going online for well under $150 (even though distributors don't yet have any to sell), so let's just say the price is up in the air on this one.

Doesn't look as feature rich as the IDJ
Pete @ Aug 2nd 2006 7:23AM
Lets just hope that it will perform better than IDJ as we have been waiting a long time for this
Richie @ Aug 2nd 2006 7:36AM
Did they not learn anything from the mistakes of the iDJ 1? No pitch control, Necessity to have two iPods? Thats practically no different than take a normal 2 channel mixer and a couple of phono leads.
Spherehead @ Aug 2nd 2006 8:19AM
Still no pitch control. Total POS!
Is it that damn hard to add pitch control to one of these things?

In case the rest of you forgot - companies are stupid. They don't care, and probably really don't mind what wasn't enjoyed in the last one. They are just silly people making silly toys, if you want a real set of turntables get them, but screw this thing.

First off, this product clearly isn't meant to compete with the iDJ2. End of story, there is no "move over iDJ2'...
Second, I know a lot of people would love to hate on this thing without knowing thing one about the way the DJ industry works, but Gemini is known for putting out affordable versions of other products, and thats what this is.
Given the lack of functionality in Numark's iDJ, what's the point in duplicating the controls on the actual unit? It's not about learning from the old product, it was useless to begin with, now its about capturing the portion of the market that buys the iDJ to by offering a similar product at $100 less. The thing sells in Urban Outfitters..TRUST me, there's a market.
And Ryan, for the record, you're about 6 months late on reporting on this, and if you knew anything about pricing...they list the MSRP on the press release, but the product almost always sells for MAP price, unless the retailer is a moron.

What's funny is the price.
It may be significantly cheaper until you factor in a couple hundred for the second iPod.
IDJ2 $600 + $250 = $850
ITRAX $150 + $500 = $650
So there is only a $200 price difference, and you get significantly better features on the IDJ2.

no pitch control = go home
you can't mix properly on that thing
dwightvesuvius @ Aug 2nd 2006 12:33PM
unbelievable - without a pitch control, what's the point? - just set up a playlist and away you go...
TDK @ Aug 2nd 2006 12:37PM
When will companies like Gemini and Numark understand that when it comes to DJ'ing there is a need for pitch control? Seriously, this product here is a waste of cash.
Podophile @ Aug 2nd 2006 12:47PM
"unbelievable - without a pitch control, what's the point? - just set up a playlist and away you go..."
A single iPod can't crossfade between tracks, so unless you enjoy a couple seconds of dead space between songs, the "just set up a playlist" idea really isn't the same.

It's from Gemini. If it last a weak/week it last long. I have been djing for the past 14yrs. Trust me, this sucks.

agreed, but it seems a bit extravagant to buy another ipod + this iTrax mixer for a bit of manual crossfading. pitch control is the way forward...

poop!

M-Audio's Torq,Ableton Live,DJM-1000,and Trigger Finger. Total pwnage!

So...for simple, practical mixing of songs based in an iPod (and also in iTunes on a Mac), and then storing the result, what do you folks recommend for a beginner? Thanks!

Can you listen to your cued channel in one ear while the other channel plays? I read that this can't be done with the numark. I am a complete novice (just now looking to buy equipment) but that just seems ridicules to me. I would definitely want to be able to hear the next song that is cued!
Any Comments?
