Goodbye E3, WWDC here we come!
Listen, E3, we had some good times. We shook like maniacs for your motion controllers. We jammed with the band (and our resident DJ, Stab Master Arson). We skated all over the place. We liveblogged like crazy. We basically took your news flow and funneled it into a succinct package of mind-blowing media snacks. But that was then, and this is now. We had to hightail it out of town, because a certain someone needs our special brand of tenderness... and that certain someone is Apple's WWDC in San Francisco. We'll miss you E3, but only a little bit.
Seriously guys, gear up for WWDC this coming Monday (June 8th), where some kind of new phone or something might get announced. Here's the page you'll want to plant yourselves at (feel free to bookmark), and here's what time you'll want to do said planting:

10:00AM - Pacific
11:00AM - Mountain
12:00PM - Central
01:00PM - Eastern
06:00PM - London

new phone? i think all details should be out by now
yawnnn
wake me up when the phone can multitask.
even my 5 year old blackberry has been doing that!
Darkstar - Maybe you can explain how the iPod can run in the background while you do other things if the iPhone can't multitask. How about getting calls while you're in Safari? Pretty sure it needs to be able to multitask to do that. Getting SMS messages no matter what app you're in requires mutitasking too, and so does Mail getting email in the background and Safari loading pages in the background, all of which the iPhone has always been able to do.
Cmon Apple,
lets pwn these iClones :)
@zak
Just ignore the troll dude,
next thing you know he will say that all 50,000 apps are fat apps and thats why he doesnt like the iphone.
Ironic that the people that infest threads, and troll their brains out attacking those products, actually worry about trolls on Apple threads?
Zak, multitasking isnt where ur phone is playing a ringtone and you are cooking a meal. Multi tasking is when the phone can have many apps running at the same time, as well as app integration (calender with emails, etc). I could be running, forbes, bloomberg, buzzed, brickbreaker, word2go, gps, etc, and STILL get texts, calls and everything in between, all while grilling a steak.
THAT is multitasking.
Macheads often say:
Macs are Porsche and PC are Hyundai.
Are Macs Porsche with a Hyundai engine?
Or PCs are Hyundai with a Porsche engine?
...stfu Roach
Zak....you are in idiot. I have an iPhone so please don't redefine what multitasking is for the benefit of the Apple religious cult. Why do you think Apple is trying to allow programs, well up to 3, to run in the background...TOO ALLOW MULTITASKING...hence the ability of the phone to do several things at once which it CANNOT at this moment unless you wanna listen to "your" music while surfing the tiny Safari in a tiny screen. I just want the phone to let me know I have an email besides a tiny little ping sound that occurs only once. The phone needs functionality too. Hopefully 3.0 after 3 years Apple will get halfway there.
OMG, OMG, OMG! This is the official start of the new millenium. I haven't felt this way since I found out the world wasn't flat. And if Lord Jobs actually makes an appearance, I'm going to splooge in my knickers. If the rumor is true that the iPhone can actually allow users to time travel plus the battery lasts for ten hours of continuous video, I'm going to be the first on line to buy one. Cheer me in, Apple employees. Here's my money. Where do I sign?
And to think there were people that were actually excited about the Palm Pre. No comparison to the real deal. The amazing iPhone Video. Your new mobile, hand-held video studio.
Plus, there's Snow Leopard, the world's greatest desktop OS that can run rings around Windows 7 for the mere upgrade price of $129. It multitasks and never crashes like Windows does. This will be the greatest, most phenomonal WWDC in history. Thank you, Apple. My life is now complete.
Mac like porsche?mmm not really. More like BMW. Solid, a bit conservative and not too fast.
But really, I dont know anything about cars.
as far as i know, and everybody on this planet know, the current iphone does not multitask!
calls and sms and receiving mail work in the background, and thats about it
can you make a call, stay on it, and then jump over to safari to discuss a website? when you are done, you jump over to Bejeweled because your friend is boring you. you notice you got mail and then jump back to Bejeweled while your boring gf is asking what color of dress shes should get. can your precious phone do all that at once? no??? i didnt think so. i bet you didnt know other phones can do that did you?
darkstar: "can you make a call, stay on it, and then jump over to safari to discuss a website? when you are done, you jump over to Bejeweled because your friend is boring you. you notice you got mail and then jump back to Bejeweled while your boring gf is asking what color of dress shes should get. can your precious phone do all that at once? no??? i didnt think so. i bet you didnt know other phones can do that did you?"
UM... you obviously haven't used an iPhone.
You absolutely can do other tasks while talking on the phone. You just can't play bejeweled and check email at the same time.
Why do we have to wait???? Just release the damn thing already.
I'm sick and tired of the "Pat myself on the back" dog and pony shows that they do.
Ever notice how most companies usually introduce new or updated gadgets quietly into the market?
Not APPLE (or MS).....Nooo....they have to display themselves like kings so all the gadget droolers and come kiss their feet.
Just release it and STFU already......We get it, your proud of yourselves.
@darkstar
Actaully....yes it can do all of those things. On the 2g iphone you could browse safari (on wifi) while on a call, send an sms while on a call, play bejeweled while on a call, LISTEN TO MUSIC while on a call, watch youtube vid while on a call,
Heck you could even be listening to music, on a call and sending sms or browse safari all while it checks your mail at the same time (lame that the email notification isnt customizable).
On the 3g iphone you didnt even need to be on wifi to do all those things concurrently (just had to have 3g signal).
You're obviously an idiot. Stop trying to knock something until you have FULL knowledge of the subject matter.
I've owned 2g and 3g iphone....I cant wait to get rid of the iphone. I hate it. For reasons why see the techcrunch article from today.
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/04/the-short-lifespan-of-the-iphone/
ANDROID FTW
WOOOO HOOOOO! and it will be way better than E3 go apple! :P
You put the name 'Ben' to shame.
Hang your head sire.
New iPhone here we come!
Again, another conference from Apple in order them to try to flaunt their mediocrity and "new, innovative features" and call them something great. Look at the iPhone for example, their probably calling themselves geniuses because they managed to get copy and paste, and MMS on a phone which should have had that to start with.
"We bring you here today not just to talk about our products, but our innovatite genius. We here at Apple have spent countless hours coming up with something we think is truly magnificent. We like to call it, 'Copy and Paste'."
it'll be "unbelievable."
"mere mortals" with copy and paste? this is "huge!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOVRgVPrGlQ
Just curious, do you actually think your thoughts are original and therefore worth expressing? Clearly, the original iPhone's main goal was to nail the UI and user experience in general, not pile on features. The feature list has steadily and consistently risen over the last two years, and you're still filled with negativity. Go away.
I want to see the comedians have a hay day with this. "Did you hear about this, new iPhone got announced today [cheering from crowd], the new most anticipated feature copy and paste, get this with this new features users will be able to take text and duplicate it other areas of the phone. I think they are onto something here."
Apple did something no other cell phone company did at that time. They nailed the UI and delivered a phone with impressive things like safari and really did a good job on things like the "phone app". But yes I agree, why wasnt MMS, or copy and paste there before. And what about that camera. You can get a cheap phone that takes videos.
@Michael Lee
Agree on all your points. Apple created a revolutionary mobile experience and user interface.
However, you must know the reason there's a crappy camera, and that MMS, copy/paste, and 3G (from the original) were all omitted was to cleverly leave Apple's consumers a reason to buy the next iPhone, and the next, and the next.
That's the Apple game. And, when you have a loyal following who'll buy your new phone/music player every year, why not dribble out the updates to keep them hooked like crack addicts on huddled around the bunsen burner?
I for one, hope they kick ass and exceed expectations. Not because I'll be buying an iPhone3 (which you can be certain will again omit something obvious which makes everyone say WTF), but because I want them to push the rest of the free market forward, so the *next* Android or whatever phone I do buy will be better for it.
@ all you sniveling Apple haters:
Isn't sad that a phone without copy & paste (iPhone) is *still* better than your crappy favorite (Windows Mobile)?
Try not to grind your teeth to powder next week...
Wes - Apple had copy and paste in 1981 on the Apple Lisa, long before Windows was even a glint in Bill Gates' eye. Please be less stupid, and that goes for everybody agreeing with him.
Wes, u is a trolling foo...
Go play with ur Pre-jeculation or Wein-Mo...
Cool I can write like an engadget reader now too
The iPhone's not perfect, wow wes, that's some genius observational work there, u could earn money sorting recyclables down the shelter.
hahahah zak just pwned you haters :D
Quix I assure you that I there is no teeth grinding. I have a WinMo phone by choice. If I had wanted an iPhone I would have one by now.
@ Quix
Again, you clowns go on other threads and just attack and flame other products like it was going out of style, but you have the nerve to then sit here and start mouthing off about "apple haters"?
So what type of "haters" does that make you?
Reading these comments make me feel very sad about life. The thought that people care so deeply about these companies--enough to have such petty arguments about them--disturbs me on a shallow level.
It's fun!
People have died over their favorite football teams here in Glasgow, it's just what happens, people think something is good, and if another person disagrees...wtf? time!
@Phineas J Whoopie
Some of the truest words spoken about Apple and the iPhone.
Yea Zune HD!!!
sucks!
A who? Must be an american thing.
dj stab master arson? where was dead mike and mc gusto? prior commitments? jail??
yep, jail
Cell Bock 4 specifically :P
E3 was awesome this year again. So many fun games.
You guys have fun finding out about your new phone.
-New phone
-New software
-1000 new API's (holy shit this is gonna rock)
-Snow leopard (Cant wait to see the speed on this cat)
And so much more :)
@ ^^
how much are they paying you? Or are you just THAT sad?
You sir, are property of Apple inc. You dont own a mac or iPhone, they own YOU
Obama must be spinning in his grave seeing you use his avatar.
Well yeah..
except.. yeah.. everything i said was true...?
Lmao, go away tool
Quote: "Obama must be spinning in his grave seeing you use his avatar"
I'm pretty sure that only works AFTER they are dead.
Wow what a busy schedule....
New iPhone on the way...again the anti apple crew will cry in defeat....
Would you class it as new or updated?
Or perhaps just fixed?
Apple has its work cut out for this event if they want to impress me after everything E3 did for the technology and innovation.
Oh Yeah!! I'm camping out for that one as well.... whenever they give the release date....
This is not going to be what everyone expects, but a HUGH disappointment - - I called it.
Hugh Jackman is going to introduce the new iPhone?!? Awesome!
The E key is nowhere near the H key.
... And stay away from my kids.
Was an Apple hater, then my phone broke, wanted some apps and here we are.
All hail the IPhone!
What time in the city so nice, they named it twice: Wagga Wagga, N.S.W. Australia?
OK, that's like 3am Tuesday UTC+1000 (AEST)
already stocked up on my KY Silk and ready for Apple to give it to me.
The new Iphone is better be up to the expectations because the Palm Pre stand really high right now.
Come on Apple, add a memory expansion slot to the IPhone, probably for SD cards. Every other phone has this, why not yours? Same goes for your computers Apple!
Except the Pre.
You dont expect them to use SD cards if they can make their own branded Applecards? Just 99 for a 4GB Applecard. You'd be a sucker not to buy those because they look so damn pretty inside your iPhone!
hmmmm... new phone?
Could this be the pre 2?
The IPhone may be the first Apple product I'll ever purchase. I'm a vehement PC fanboy but the Iphone and Ipod Touch look nice, if only Apple didn't create them. ; )
Yes, it would be much better if they sucked more.
Geez, why all the tension between Apple fans and everyone else? Like someone wise before me once said; "Can't we all just, shut the hell up?"
If somebody else could've created them they would've done it by now. The device that comes closest (as in distant 2nd) is the Palm Pre. And the Pre was designed/engineered by ex-Apple employees.
Just having an Apple logo on a product automatically makes it better. It's a mystical symbol that pulls in all the positive forces from the universe.
@Cosmo
You what be better off getting a Zune when it comes out, don't buy into the hype.
The Zune HD also looks pretty tempting. The main reason I am considering the IPhone is its phone capabilities, I have a phone and portable entertainment device in one in my pocket, one less thing to carry around. A Zune phone would be nice and a Sony PSP Phone would be nicer. : )
Why would you get a Zune HD over a iPod Touch?
Doesn't the Zune HD basically use the same interface as the iPod Touch while offering less features?
And thats compared to the iPod Touch that came out a year ago. Not only does the Zune HD rip off of the technology that Apple made mainstream and put into multi-million selling handsets two years ago but it's barely competitive with an iPod Touch a year old.
If your willing to give any reasons as to why you prefer the Zune HD over the iPod Touch then thats fair enough but right now your not exactly making a compelling argument.
ignore Tony. Id say wait for the ZuneHD specs to be released and keep your phone. Having one device die is bad enough. Having two devices die is even worse.
ipod touch is still just a... well ipod touch :(
Whoa, wait, WHAT!? An Apple keynote on a Monday? Ahhh, see what happens when Steve isn't in full controls of things?
.......This is WWDC. Worldwide Developers Connection. It's not necessarily a keynote.
I don't understand why people are so excited about WWDC.
If a new iPhone is announced does it really matter?
I mean no doubt it will be huge but the reason the iPhone is a masterpiece has got nothing to do with a high megapixel camera or any of those bs features that have no real world significant, it's a masterpiece because it just does what its supposed to do and it does it so well.
While the competitors are throwing in more megapixels into smaller sensors and tricking morons into thinking its a better camera or ripping off the same multi touch technology that Apple made a multi million selling empire out of and executing it badly Apple are making products whoose main feature is just to work well.
If they announce a specs bump is it really a big deal considering ludicrous specs and features nobody will ever use are not relevant to what the iPhone is?
uh..apple never actually 'innovates' its morel like they apply it the best. And if you've read some review there are good touchscreen competitors.
And of course the megapixel myth...but there come a point where it just becomes an excuse now. I honestly think 12 id just excessive but when it is 5-8 there is no need to start dishing it out, because the last item I checked the 8MP cameraphones were doing pretty damn well for their pocketable size.
oh....and apple didn't invent the capacitive touchscreen either...
You know other companies aren't ripping apple off for using a technology that apple didn't 'invent'
But whatever, I respect the iphone for what it is. I just don't see it as extremely innovative or revolutionary...its jsut marketed extremely well and does what it says it does.
hahaha some people still believe the only reason Apple does so well is because of its marketing? And I thought that faux argument had died an embarrassing death a long time ago. Just this week Apple received another patent for a multi-touch click-wheel. And Apple has truckloads of other patents on the iPhone and their other products.
Well too bad Tam, but despite what you may chose to believe, Apple is ranked year after year top innovative company in the World:
Business Week: Apple #1 Innovator
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/innovative_companies/
CNN Best & worst in: Innovation
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/mostadmired/2009/best_worst/best1.html
Apple: Most innovative company, 3rd time in a row:
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/07/05/0503_innovative_co/index_01.htm?chan=innovation_special+report+--+2007+most+innovative+companies_2007+most+innovative+companies?sr=hotnews.rss
.
And it's only the Apple-haters that fabricate the idea that Apple fans believe Apple invented capacitive touch screens, just you can attack them for it.
S.Tam = Fail.
Thanks Fox, I take it since business leaders also consider Microsoft to be a highly innovative company you're more than happy to concede this is a fact too? :)
@ Mark
Microsoft's customers are corporations and OEMs, not consumers. MS does not know how to sell to consumers, therefore their attempts are failure after failure.
@Fox
Really? That must be why Apple and Linux dominate the consumer sector then? Except they don't, do they?
Here's how it really works: Apple and MS have massive R&D divisions which work on their own stuff or technology and patents that have been acquired. In other words they take things and make them better. That's innovation as opposed to invention.
Both are very good at it. It's just silly fanboys who accuse one side of copying whilst lauding their own for innovating.
Dammit! My stupid school blocked engadget and like everything else I go on, but a day later, so now I can't follow along!
oh well, i'll just watch the keynote this time
Use a proxy server to unblock the internet, thats what I do. A really good and very hard to block one is https://www.vtunnel.com
MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE S because the SSL encryption is what makes it so hard to block. Reply to this comment if you want some others, I have a massive list of proxies from a mailing list. The teachers at my school fucking hate me because of this :D.
I've been planning on buying an iPhone but I'm waiting to see if a new one is announced. I always have the bad luck of buying a piece of hardware and then an upgraded version is announced within a month. I'm making sure that doesn't happen this time.
On a side note, I actually hope they announce a cheaper one, even if it has less space. I don't really need the iPhone for music or videos. I've got a 120GB Zune that has my music and movies one it.
I'm pretty much the same. I can get out of my contract at any point so I'm just waiting on the new iPhone to be released to compare it with the competition. A lower capacity iPhone would suit me as I already have an MP3 player and its small enough that I can live with both it and the iPhone in my pocket, and I'm a poor student.
Steve Jobs is the greatest man ever.
I guess that makes Opera second?
You mean Ophra?
I love his charity work. I love how he works with CARE international, the International Rescue Committee, the Mercy Corps, Save the Children and World Vision. I love how his foundation contributes millions of dollars to museums and educational groups, and does not support Intelligent Design. $287 million towards HIV/AIDS research. I love how he's working to wipe out malaria.
Ooops, that's someone else.
Steve makes iPods and iPhones and the pretty computers I use at work, which are said to be good for photoshop. What a hero.
mirakutea:
People like you are the reason for the PC-Mac wars!
Heh just testing the love for apple on engadget, apparently not too much.
I'm so excited. Woo!
To balance this interesting discussion, can I just say: I hate you all.
Thank you.
I thought apple delivered stuff on Tuesdays even WWDC?
Welcome to the club! I'm so excited about the event. Could we believe job will appear with somethings interesting in his hand at the conference? 75%. http://itcenter.vn/prediction/quan-ly/cio/steve-jobs-tro-lai-apple-trong-thang-6/6862/
snow leopard better be more than just dark menus from all the screen shots. I mean, for the average user, the only noticeable difference in leopard was the fresher look and the stacks feature, which really isn't even that useful of a feature in the first place. If i wouldn't of gotten leopard from a friend for free I would've been kind of pissed that i dropped $130 for it when it came out for no real big difference in anything, except that it slowed down my ibook so much that i had to put tiger back on it.
Apple said from the beginning that the bulk of Snow Leopard's innovations and changes are going to be under the hood, where it really counts. There will be some visual innovations too but none major I believe. In other words, SL won't be for everyone.
WTF no Alaska time? we are a part of the USA you know
Where all the fanbois are flocked together.
