Nintendo CEO: battle with Sony is over, Apple is the 'enemy of the future'
Backing away from a previous position, are we Nintendo? Just a month after Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claimed that the iPhone OS (you know, that operating system used on the iPod touch, iPhone family and the iPad) wasn't a "viable profit platform for game development," along comes the company's president to say that, in fact, Apple is the primary "enemy of the future." That's according to Times Online, who says that the Big N's CEO (Satoru Iwata) feels that the battle with Sony is a "victory already won," and who clearly believes that the next wave of gaming won't be of the traditional sit-on-your-coach-and-slam-buttons variety. 'Course, the PSP never has been able to hang with the DS family, but even the Wii has a ways to go before it catches the mighty PlayStation 2 in terms of global sales. Going forward, the company is purportedly looking to revive the element of "surprise" in Nintendo products, but it might be best served by simply catching up to the competition and supporting this wild concept known as "HD gaming" over "HDMI."

The battle with Sony is over when Nintendo makes a console with graphics that don't look like sh*t on an HDTV.
@rudiger Nintendo can turn out an HD-enabled console any time, and will probably do so when their sales actually start slipping. Which, as I understand, is beginning to happen.
I'd welcome a Wii HD, that's for sure; I've seen what Wii games look like with the resolution amped up in an emulator... it's mind-blowing.
@macserv
Wii is excellent for lighthearted games but seriously, God of War III, Gears II, Halo 3...Metal Gear Solid....
Were they really competing with Sony and Xbox 360... don't you need to be targeting the same market to compete?

@macserv
I agree with him. By releasing "move", Sony has practically admitted it's defeat.
@Fez Actually, no, they were not competing with the same market. Nintendo found a way to get people who don't *want* a 360 or PS3 or games like you mentioned to buy their console, and play games. An extreme focus on casual and in-room-multiplayer gaming is what's rocketed them to the top.
It's also why I don't play my Nintendo console much anymore when I don't have family/friends over.
@macserv
I think the Wii HD is already outdated.
Just a thought.
Nintendo is WAY ahead of themselves, just last generation and the one before that they were a huge failure and Sony dominated them. Now that everyone is going to have motion controls in the next gen for sure, it could go right back to Sony or even MS.
A motion controller, worse graphics, and 50 variations and rehashes isn't going to work next generation Nintendo.
@Fez Picard Facepalm ASCII art FTW!!!
@rudiger
Yeah, nintendo always reject modern technology and wanted create its own little fantasy world.
@rudiger Agreed. See also: 3D Dot Heroes
@rudiger
this guy is a moron. from a sales standpoint, sure the Wii is killing the ps3 in terms of sales (just hardware) but in terms of software sales, that isn't so clear cut. especially when you consider the type of product life the ps3 is SUPPOSED to have (10 year console) when compared to the wii (how many of u already know 5 people that you can name in under 20 seconds who have a console thats just gathering dusts).
I mean, to say that apple is the competitor of the future is one thing, but to say that sony is a victory already won when 1) the ps2 is still selling hardware and software, and the ps3 has many years ahead of it and 2) except for the FEW AAA titles u have per year, you struggle to sell any games (shovelware, Call of Duty Modern warfare....yuck). i think you should continue this fight before looking forward to the next one...just sayin
@rudiger
Sure, engadget readers like HD, but most people don't care. It is kind of true that the markets for these products are different. I personally don't care what the graphics look like as long as I know what is going on in the game. My most played game is still Mario Kart 64 because everyone knows how to play it and it can be made into a fun drinking game. When you are drunk HD is the last thing you care about.
@Fez Borderlands! I love my Wii but I've been devoted to Borderlands on the 360.
@simbadogg
I really don't know but in 2017 if Sony hasn't anything new on the market but clings to the PS3 it's grim news for their gaming division. Both Microsoft and Nintendo will drive over Sony with their new products at that point.
@macserv I believe that the slip in sales is why the black ones are coming out to stir it up just enough for the next version to be designed because they release slightly before microsoft who releases slightly before sony
@macserv Nintendo said Wii sales slipped 21%. I guess it's time then
@rudiger: Nintendo is probably still alive only because of Mario. Not that I don't love the Wii. It's actually the only system I have at moment. But with Natal and Move, Sony and Microsoft have owned Nintendo to its face. Playstation Move is made more advanced by the camera, but Natal really does Motion right. And awesome.
Oh ya, and to all those that keep saying Engadget = Apple fanbois, wanna tell me why every ad on the site is for an Android phone?
If you have friends that are around regularly then buy a Wii, if you regularly sit in an empty dark room buy an xbox. I haven't found a single xbox game that offers me the same amount of fun as playing the wii. I do play modern warfare online with friends every now and then but it bores me quickly, fuck all to talk about beyond, "bastard killed me".
@FMinus
who said sony wont have anything new? its just not in their plan to discontinue the ps3 anytime soon. i would say we should expect the ps4, or w/e it may be called within 2 or so years (2 more years if you look at how far into the ps3 lifecycle we went before the ps3 dropped, but i doubt it'd be that long since a big reason for sonys delay was because of the high cost of blu ray diodes in 2004, 2005 leading up to the launch in 2006. i highly doubt sony will make the same mistake of letting microsoft get a ''head start'' in next gen sales this time)
at that point you will most def see the discontinuation of the ps2 in all regions (except maybe still emerging regions like india and parts of latin america) where the ps3 and the ps4 will be sold side by side, in the same manner that ps2 and ps3 were.
@drkztan
Omg dude MH3 is amazing :D Seriously those classic controllers are tank how strong are you to fucking break one.
@treats the generation before last was the n64 for nintendo. I do believe many find it to be the greatest console of all time.
@perrbr You clearly do not own a TV large enough to need it. Being able to barely make out whats going on in your game should not be considered acceptable.
@rudiger Added to that, the balls may be back on the court of Sony or even MS. but why Apple. http://j.mp/natal-ms-impression
@macserv and thus is why i will never consider the wii a game console
i will sooner chop off my manhood well not that crazy :P but something close, its more of a family/party console with a few games here and there but its not complete without a xbox, ps2, ps3 or 360 along side it
@perrbr dude.. nintendo could at least put some antialiasing into their systems if they dont go hd.
@mominshahab how do you work that out? does that mean microsoft has also admitted defeat by announcing natal or whatever it's going to be called?

@N900
:)
@N900
Aarrrgg!! I can't take it! Someone please explain! I tried to figure it out.. I really did try...
DAMN!!! Oh no he didn't
It's kinda Reggie's job to bluster out hyperbole like he did... it was hardly surprising. Iwata coming out and admitting the opposite *is* surprising, and highlights the differences between him and Yamauchi, his predecessor.
inb4shitstorm.
But… but… the Apple Haters told us that Apple couldn't compete with Nintendo without buttons.
Oh snap!
Being a PS3 owner, I have always hoped that Sony would approach Google & see if they want to work together. Not sure what they'd do together, but seems if Sony had Google's backing, it would give them a much needed boost, not to mention add Google's creativity to the platform!
@thaprinze "I have always hoped that Sony would approach Google & see if they want to work together"
They did... Didn't you notice all the internet search stuff on the XMB?
:O how darrrreee they!!
Engadget don't forget that Apple also hates HDMI.
@redspear HDMI should be on things that needs HDMI, like Apple TV.
the rest is better with DVI or Displayport.
@Ben64 Why's that? I thought DVI and HDMI were pretty much the same thing, except HDMI is for TVs and DVI is for monitors.
@Ben64 they really should have both. try outputing video to an HDTV over using a newer macbook. it's a huge pain. first you have to get an adapter to convert mini display port to HDMI, but then what about the audio? if you have a separate speaker system you might be able to output to that through the headphone jack, but otherwise you're kinda screwed. i guess you could pay a bunch of money for a displayport to HDMI + HDMI to VGA adapter, that would blow.
face it, the fact is that many mac users would be happier if they had HDMI.
@redspear
Apple has HDMI on their products that need it.
@maveric101 .. The new MacBook's support audio over DisplayPort/HDMI.
@maveric101
It's the HDTV's that need a DVI/DisplayPort for input from computers in general. Most TV's and monitors have them. That's how I connect my computers to those displays, so why are you worrying about MacBooks needing an HDMI port? Many of these screens are overkilling on their input ports: good ol' RGB x 2, HDMI x2, DVI, w/e.
Anyway, you still need an adapter to convert mini DisplayPort to regular size. Hopefully future displays can adapt that :p
"'Course, the PSP never has been able to hang with the DS family"
*ignoring japanese sales
*and game quality
@Extinction You really are ignoring game quality if you think the PSP is better than the DS.
The sheer volume of shovelware may convince you otherwise, but the DS platform is home to the most great games of either system. :)
@Dale P "You really are ignoring game quality if you think the PSP is better than the DS."
No. You're ignoring game quality if you think PSP isn't better. Since launch, game ratings aggregation sites rated PSP's library as better, and it never stopped.
And my collection agrees
Couldn't find a graph for japan but these are the worldwide figures:
DS 128.89 Million
PSP 60 Million
That is a fairly wide margin from anybody's standpoint. It can't be hardware? So what is it?
@Extinction
You seem to be ignoring the fact that the DS has this thing called shovelware. It's a problem that hasn't graced it's presence on your precious PSP.
