  • Assassin's Creed 3 'Eruditos' spotted, smell like microtransactions

Assassin's Creed 3 will feature some form of microtransactions, according to the most recent PlayStation Store update. The latest update includes several bits of DLC for Assassin's Creed 3, notably five different packs of "Erudito" ranging in price from $0.99 for 20 all the way up to $19.99 for 950.We currently have two theories. Either Abstergo has created a new brand of cheese-frosted tortilla chips for the discerning scholar, or Erudito is an in-game currency used to unlock content. Our money is on the latter, and presumably Ubisoft hopes yours is too.

Assassin's Creed 3 hasn't yet arrived, but Ubisoft already claims its trip through the American Revolutionary has garnered the highest number of pre-orders for the company so far. We don't know any hard numbers at this point, save for the fact that AC3 has over double the pre-orders of last year's Assassin's Creed: Revelations, with a few days to go before launch at the end of the month.GameStop is predictably thrilled: Company president Tony Bartel is practically climbing trees with excitement in the press release below. Ubisoft also says the Assassin's Creed series has sold over 40 million games worldwide, and it expects the official number 3 to add to that total significantly. Wherever the series is going, it certainly isn't down.

Following its launch video, Assassin's Creed 3 now has an interactive trailer to get you in the mood for hooded executions, Revolution-style. It takes you to the Battle of Bunker Hill, where you're charged with assassinating Major John Pitcairn. The major really did die during the battle in 1775, and it's chronicled he was taken out by a rifle shot. Thanks to the choices offered in this trailer, you can rewrite history. Well, as far as the two choices on offer go.

Assassin's Creed 3 launches next week, and that can only mean one thing. That's right, it's launch trailer time, complete with appropriately hip music and plenty of explosions. In other Assassin's Creed 3 news, remember the exclusive content promised for the PS3 version? Well, here it is. The four exclusive missions tell the story of Benedict Arnold. We're not sure what it is, but we really don't trust this guy. Check out a new trailer after the break.

  • Wii U voice chat sounds pretty complicated

Nintendo is approaching voice chat on Wii U from a very ... odd angle. Select games will support voice chat via third-party, officially licensed headsets plugged into the WiiPad's headphone jack, but voice chat will not be standard across all games or even the system itself. Even though the WiiPad has a built-in microphone, it can't be used for voice chat.Things get a bit more complicated when you enter the Pro Controller into the mix. The Pro Controller doesn't even have a headphone jack, so for a game like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, players will need to plug their headset into the WiiPad and set it next to them while they play with the Pro Controller. So far the only games listed to support in-game voice chat are Assassin's Creed 3, Mass Effect 3 and Black Ops 2. Nintendo has yet to announce voice chat support for any further games, never mind detailed plans of the Wii U's online suite.

It's available for pre-order right now.Just like its console cousins, the PC version will include a hardcover encyclopedia, graphic novels The Fall and The Chain, and a copy of Assassin's Creed 3, all bundled in special packaging for $99.99. The downloadable content offered as part of the Assassin's Creed 3 "Season Pass" includes "The Tyranny of King Washington," a single-player campaign presented in three episodic downloads. As the title may suggest, this DLC goes into "an alternate history of the events following the American Revolution," which shouldn't be too jarring after the game's alternate history of the Revolution itself, in which every important event was secretly kicked off by a guy in a hoodie. The Season Pass will cost $30, and will also offer multiplayer DLC that isn't as explicitly about killing a power-mad George Washington. The Season Pass offer applies to PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, but all the DLC will be available on Wii U separately.

Sony announced its "PSN Day 1 Digital" program today, offering full copies of the fall's major releases through the PlayStation Network on launch day. We've been waiting for Sony to announce something like this, since hinting to the larger concept with the test cases of Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2.The PSN Day 1 Digital program for October covers Resident Evil 6 (Oct. 2), NBA 2K13 (Oct 2), Dishonored (Oct 9), DOOM 3: BFG Edition (Oct 16), 007: Legends (Oct. 16), Medal Of Honor: Warfighter (Oct. 23), Need For Speed: Most Wanted (Oct. 30) and Assassin's Creed 3 (Oct. 30).PlayStation Plus members also receive a 10% discount on NBA 2K13, Dishonored, Doom 3 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted with pre-order.

Assassin's Creed 3's gameplay elements will feel familiar to longtime fans of the franchise, with the significant exception of the combat mechanics. It'll be interesting to see how fans adapt and newcomers react."We rebuilt the combat system. I think one of the most striking comments we've heard in the last two days is how different it feels to fans of the franchise to previous game. I think you can do a lot," Alex Hutchinson, creative director on Assassin's Creed 3, told me at a recent press preview. "The whole flow of it is different, the archetypes are different, the old strategies just won't work."Curious about the specifics, I asked Hutchinson for standout examples of differences between the previous four installments in the series and the latest iteration."For example, before, a counter was an automatic kill. You didn't have to make a decision after that, you could just spam the attack button. Before, you had to target everyone individually by using the left trigger, which you no longer have to do. You would block on the right trigger, which is now a face button. You couldn't run out of a fight in the old version, but now you can, because the right trigger is still free run. Nobody attacked simultaneously, which they do now. It's virtually a complete rewrite."%Gallery-166434%

The last of a four-part developer diary series for Assassin's Creed 3 is titled "America, by Land and Sea," and it takes place entirely in the skies above Morocco. Strange. Not really – the final dev diary describes the historical accuracy of Assassin's Creed 3's main cities, positing that citizens of those areas today should get a creepy "I've been here before" feeling while wandering the digital streets. It also tackles the frontier and Connor's tree-running ability, along with epic naval battles. These are different than "navel" battles, bear in mind.

In the grand scheme of things, making choices in game design and whether to murder someone are on just about the same level, which is why both categories of discussion get the same epic background music in the above Assassin's Creed 3 developer diary. One of these things, of course, is fictional.

Forget about that messy Oculus Rift, business -- Sony's got a properly futuristic looking (and shiny!) head-mounted display for gaming, too, and it's gonna make another public appearance at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Of course, Sony's effort doesn't also offer head tracking, but, again, it's much nicer looking, so we're willing to excuse major technical differences. A whole litany of games will be playable with the HMZ-T2 device at TGS, from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to Assassin's Creed 3 (some games are only demoable with the HMZ device, oddly). As we learned earlier today, the HMZ-T2 goes on sale (in Japan at least) this October for nearly $900. That Oculus Rift is starting to sound much more appealing, eh?

Ubisoft debuted the above commercial for holiday blockbuster Assassin's Creed 3 alongside the opening of the NFL season this week, prompting one Joystiq editor's father to call the game "impressive." For us, it serves to highlight how we've become snobs about the music Ubisoft uses in its trailers. Hey, when you set such a high precedent, it's hard to shrug off just some boring old song, you know?
