Capcom's 'Teppen' card game pits Chun-Li against Dante

Capcom clearly couldn't resist the temptation to hop on the card game bandwagon. The gaming giant has teamed up with GungHo to release Teppen (no, not Tekken), a card battler for Android and iOS that revolves around better-known characters from Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Darkstalkers and other classics. If you've ever wanted to see Chun-Li fight Dante or Morrigan take on Mega Man, you can make it happen.

The original Devil May Cry is coming to Nintendo Switch this summer. We do know, though, that the game will only be available as a download, with no physical release.

'Devil May Cry 5' reveals the live action mockups behind its cutscenes

Numerous games have offered behind-the-scenes footage that shows how cutscenes came to be. But what if you could play the entire game that way? Capcom, at least, is willing to give that a shot. When Devil May Cry 5 launches on March 8th, the Deluxe Edition will include an option to watch the live action footage used to visualize cutscenes before the CG comes into play. In essence, it's like watching a low-rent, sweded version of Devil May Cry -- action figures, cardboard trucks and simple costumes fill in for the usual digital wizardry.

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Telltale Games looked at Minecraft's build-what-you-want universe and decided to build an episodic, narrative-driven game instead of a crummy castle like the rest of us. At this point, we wouldn't even be surprised if Telltale Games' next project is a narrative-driven series starring Samuel the rock ... it would probably be well-written, too. There's a bit more to this week's recap beyond Telltale's latest reveal though, including ports of the last two Devil May Cry games, free games for those that own Assassin's Creed Unity's season pass, a review of Xeodrifter and an assessment of recent high-profile, broken-at-launch games. All that and more is waiting for you after the break in this edition of the Joystiq Weekly!

  • Capcom US, Japan's creative relationship with UK's Ninja Theory

DmC: Devil May Cry represents Capcom's focused, intentional effort to add western flair to a traditionally Japanese-styled game, left in the care of UK-entrenched studio Ninja Theory. Both Capcom Japan and US left the westernization entirely in Ninja Theory's hands, only providing advice on the game's core essentials and at times making strong suggestions about characters and controls. Otherwise, Capcom took a hands-off approach to the game's modernization.Among three branches of two studios in three disparate areas of the globe, creating anything successfully – let alone a new, yet familiar game in a popular franchise – was bound to be frustrating. According to Capcom producers Motohide Eshiro and Alex Jones, it certainly was stressful working with Ninja Theory, but it was also successful.Read their thoughts on Ninja Theory and the international DmC development process below.

Capcom has laid out commercial projections for its biggest upcoming games, and expects Resident Evil 6 to sell seven million copies. Resident Evil 5 sold almost two million in its first six months or so in the US alone.Resident Evil 6 is just one of four big titles in the pipeline from Capcom. The Ninja Theory reboot of Devil May Cry is expected to sell two million, and this month's launch of Dragon's Dogma is expected to yield a total of 1.5 million units sold. Finally, the recently announced Lost Planet 3 – which is in development at Spark Unlimited – is expected to sell the least of the bunch, with 1.4 million copies.

  • DMC's Dante sequestered in a separate universe

For its Devil May Cry game, Ninja Theory somewhat boldly reimagined the revered protagonist, Dante, changing his appearance and his backstory. And now, to assuage the surprisingly irritated Devil May Cry fanbase, Ninja Theory assured Dengeki PlayStation that this version of Dante is from a parallel continuity separate from that of the white-haired Dante-Prime. That means that the Dante you know and love can continue in his own universe, and potentially in future Devil May Cry games, while Dante of Earth 2 splits off in a different direction. It also means that there's an official Devil May Cry "canon," which somebody has actually put thought into. In fact, there are two now.

Devil May Cry will definitely be re-released next year, as part of a long-rumored HD collection. Capcom has officially unveiled the Devil May Cry HD Collection for Xbox 360 and PS3, consisting of upgraded versions of DMC 1, 2, and Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. Capcom even went so far as to specify a $39.99 price for the set. Check out the first screens of the collection below, featuring SD and HD comparison shots, to see how Capcom went in and swapped out the old Dante for the new black-haired version. • Ninja Theory: Enslaved performance prevented team expansion

    by

    09.23.2011

Every year, critics and fans provide the word-of-mouth support to several games that barely subsist on a whisper of marketing. "Enslaved should have done better," says Tameem Antoniades, head of the game's developer, Ninja Theory. "Right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time." The comments come from a new issue of Edge (via CVG), and go on to show that the studio's longterm plans were altered by Enslaved's so-so sales. Antoniades reveals that Ninja Theory meant to expand to two teams, but have now remained a "smaller shop" to focus entirely on the Devil May Cry reboot for Capcom. Though team members had "mentally prepared" themselves for this outcome, Antoniades said in October of last year, it's clear that the game's success had been embedded in the studio's plans for growth. (At least Enslaved wasn't a racing game.) Since Devil May Cry is a firmly established brand, Ninja Theory's expressive characters may yet find themselves in a hit -- and perhaps even a finely tuned action game.

  • ESRB rates Devil May Cry 1, 2 and 3 for Xbox, PS3

We suspected as much earlier this year, and now the ESRB seems to think the first three Devil May Cry games are headed to Xbox and PS3. All three have been rated by the organization and, incidentally, have received an "M for Mature." HD collections are all the rage these days, and Capcom is certainly no stranger to rereleasing its older products. And, with the impending Devil May Cry reboot, it only makes sense that the publisher would want to cash in on both series veterans and newcomers alike. We contacted Capcom and were told that the company hasn't "made any announcements." Well we knew that. Sheesh.

If you possess fond memories of the original, snowy-haired version of Devil May Cry protagonist Dante, you should bust out your watercolors and really explore those feelings. Capcom's compiling fan-drawn art for the demon-destroying franchise's upcoming 10th anniversary, which the company will then place in "a new, to be announced Capcom game." If we were betting folks, we'd wager this title would be an HD collection of the first three installments in the Devil May Cry series. If we were really bad at betting, we'd also say those illustrations will be implemented in an all new "Dante's First Coloring Book" mode. Fortunately, we're very good at betting. We have a system, Debbie. A system!

  • Devil May Cry movie rights acquired by Screen Gems

Screen Gems' last partnership with Capcom was a resounding success: the Resident Evil films have grossed over $580 million worldwide. It is undoubtedly looking to replicate that success with its latest acquisition, Devil May Cry. Kyle Ward has been hired to write the script. Ward is currently unproven; his first feature-length script, Fiasco Heights, will debut later this year. In addition to Devil May Cry, Ward is also signed for another video game adaptation: Kane & Lynch. According to Variety, the film will feature Dante on a quest to "avenge his mother's murder by killing off demons." Given the early status of the project, it's unclear if the film will be based on the classic games, or on Ninja Theory's upcoming reboot. Given Paul Anderson's creative freedom on the Resident Evil franchise, it's entirely possible that the Hollywood Dante will be an entirely original one, as well. [Image credit: Jo Chen]

  • TUAW's Daily App: Devil May Cry 4 refrain

    02.10.2011

This is part of Capcom's holiday sale for Valentine's Day (which is probably also intended to target some new Verizon customers), but Devil May Cry 4 refrain is a pretty good port of the console action game anyway. It features a character named Nero fighting with both guns and a big sword through all kinds of demonic baddies, with the standard Devil May Cry action combos building up as you play along. Unfortunately, like most of these games, buttons are merely overlays on the touchscreen, so really dedicated action gamers may not enjoy the lack of tactile controls. But if you like this action genre at all, DMC4 refrain is a pretty solid version, albeit obviously scaled down for Apple's platform. The fact that it's on sale for US$0.99 will probably help seal the deal. Devil May Cry 4 refrain also has Retina Display graphics and full Game Center integration, so it's a full-fledged title to play through. If this doesn't float your boat, don't forget about all of the other sales going on. There are lots of high-end titles out there that you can buy for just a buck right now.

If Street Fighter IV's misguided iOS port hasn't frustrated you enough, Capcom has revealed an even more quizzical addition to its touch screen library. Devil May Cry 4 Refrain is a bite-sized version of the console game, featuring the same story as the original. You'll assume control of Nero across ten maze-like levels. (Well, if the on-screen HUD is any indication, "control" might be an overly-generous term.) Refrain is scheduled for release later this month, with a sticker price of $6.99. Although the initial release will only offer Nero as a playable character, future updates will add Dante and extra challenge modes. For more impressions (and a video!), visit Slide to Play.

  • Devil May Cry reboot likened to James Bond's Casino Royale

    by

    09.22.2010

The new version of Dante found in DmC: Devil May Cry -- you know, the one who has retroactively ruined every previous game in the franchise by having black hair -- was inspired by another refresh of a popular franchise, which also involved exciting new innovations in the field of hair color. Specifically, the Daniel Craig version of James Bond. "When you see the Casino Royale remake," Capcom's Alex Jones explained to Eurogamer, "you see Bond before he's actually killed anyone, and it's a really traumatic event. He's rough-hewn, he's not polished or debonair, but you can see the essence of what that character will become. That's what we want to do with Dante. The core of him is there, it's just a rougher version. It's a becoming. He's not fully actualised." So this Dante might be surprised the first time a sword flies directly into his torso of his own accord. "Of course long-time fans are worried about us handing over such a big title to another company, another development team," Capcom's Hideaki Itsuna said. He expressed his confidence in Ninja Theory and his belief that "they're very serious about making this game good." Itsuna explained that the reboot is intended to increase the fanbase by bringing in new buyers as well as Devil May Cry series fans. Well, at least those who aren't hung up on the hair color thing.
