Engadget's logo gets boosted... for a Croatian civic action group!

We don't know exactly what it is about the Engadget logo that people love so much (well, we have some ideas), but our name and likeness does seem to pop up in the most unusual places. This time, it's more unusual than, er... usual. Apparently, our sweet E is being used as the prime designator for a Croatian "civil society organization" called e-misija. We don't pretend to get exactly what it is they do, but anything with a promo video as sublime as the clip after the break sounds cool to us.

Note: Our logo is all over their YouTube page! See it in videos here.

[Thanks, Ahmed]

Engadget Podcast 149 - 06.05.2009

As you may soon become aware, this week's podcast is about two hours long. Now, we're aware that this might present a difficult scenario for those of you who like to rent out a sensory deprivation room every week to maximize the experience of listening to Josh, Nilay and Paul babble, so here are some usage ideas for this "wild card" hour of listening to be spent in the real world:
  • Listen to the first half of the podcast twice
  • Stand in line for the Pre for an hour and then leave
  • Teach yourself to juggle Wiimotes
  • Make a recording of yourself lightly chuckling off and on for an hour
Those are just a few of the things we though of off the top of our heads, we're sure you can improve upon these ideas when the moment of truth comes.

Engadget wins the 2009 EPpy Award for Best Consumer Technology Blog!

As we noted when we heard about our nomination for this award, it's not about the prizes and plaques for us at Engadget. That said, when news came down the line that we'd won the EPpy Award for "Best Consumer Technology Blog," we did feel a pang of pride. It's always nice to be recognized for doing solid work, especially when that work is something you truly love.

We won't bore you with any sappy acceptance speeches, but we will say that we're psyched to be able to bring tech news to you guys every day. Next up for us? We're gonna keep on keepin' on -- and we've got some pretty cool stuff in the works.

Stay tuned... it's going to be an amazing year!

-Team Engadget

Engadget is looking for a lead designer / developer!

You guys may not know this, but we have some really, really cool stuff coming up in the world of Engadget -- and not just on the editorial front. In fact, we're currently looking for a salaried, full-time designer with backend / developer chops to join us in the creation and maintenance of said cool stuff. If you're an incredibly smart, talented, hard-working human that loves Engadget, happens to have killer design sense, and knows their way around a screen full of code -- we'd like to speak to you. Keep in mind that we'll only be looking at candidates with a portfolio, and we're going to be seriously scrutinizing the work that we see. Read on for a list of our requirements.

We're nominated for an EPpy Award!

We don't really like to get self-congratulatory at Engadget -- we prefer to let the work speak for itself. Still, we thought it was pretty cool when we heard that we'd been nominated for an EPpy Award in the category of "Best Consumer Technology Blog." We're not alone, either -- the AOL family picked up the most nominations of any one company, with sites likes FanHouse and BloggingStocks getting nods as well. At the end of the day, we don't really care if we win or lose, but it's kind of nice to be recognized for doing what you love and doing it well -- so... thanks!

Engadget Podcast 142 - 04.18.2009: 5th birthday edition

We don't really get too reflective here at Engadget -- usually we're too busy getting news up to think much about ourselves. Still, when you hit your 5th birthday, you tend to want to look back and review how far you've come. We thought there'd be no better way to celebrate the milestone than by having the site's founder Peter Rojas, and instrumental architect Ryan Block on the show to discuss the early days of Engadget. So without further ado -- sit back and enjoy our 5th birthday podcast!

A quick note about the Engadget Podcast this week

We just wanted to give you guys a heads-up and let you know that while you won't see a new Engadget Podcast today -- don't worry -- it's not going anywhere! We had to shuffle our schedules a little bit to have on some very special guests, namely, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block. We decided it would be fun to celebrate Engadget's 5th birthday with a chat about how the site got its start. So... you should see the new podcast pop up in your queue sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience!

Engadget endorses Monster Cable? Uh, hell no.

You know, we were as surprised as anyone to see a totally out-of-context quote of ours used on a Monster Cable site (without permission, mind you) to sell the company's "Beats by Dre" headphones (you can see the screen cap after the break). It's ironic, really, given that we currently have a blacklist in place for the overpriced cable-maker because of their rotten business practices (like regularly going after other companies that happen to use the word monster in their name, faking performance tests, and generally bilking customers out of their hard-earned dough). Regardless, if Monster wants to use a quote from Engadget, that's no problem. We suggest this one:
Monster Cable sucks.
Update: Monster has removed the quote from the site. Now that was fast. Power to the people!

[Thanks, Michael K.]

Want to write for us? Engadget is looking for a European editor!

Oh sure, you love gadgets -- but do you have the chops to write about them? We'd love to know if you think you do, because we're looking to actually pay people to do this stuff. Professional writing experience isn't necessary (though it doesn't hurt), but what we really care about is that you can write skillfully about gadgets with wit, concision, and authority. And being obsessed with Engadget is good, too. Here's what we're looking for right now:

  • European editor - Part-time or full-time (freelance), must be based in Europe, preferably London.

Want to apply? Read on.

Engadget's 5th birthday giveaway, part 2: win one of two mystery Xbox 360 packages!

Like the Optimus Maximus, the Xbox 360 is a gadget that's been around on Engadget almost as long as... well, the site itself. Remember that exciting live launch coverage we did back in 2005? Now that was good, clean fun. Anyhow, without further ado, we're happy to present part 2 of Engadget's birthday giveaway session: a mystery Xbox 360 package. We can't tell you what's in the box here, but we can tell you that it's totally awesome. The best part? We've got not one, but two separate prizes to give away! Don't miss out -- you'll kick yourself if you do.

All you've got to do is let us know what your favorite post from the last five years has been in the comments below.

Note: We've bolded the above statement for a reason. Do it.

The rules:
  • Leave a comment below. We want to hear what your favorite Engadget post has been from the last five years -- and feel free to be descriptive!
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Two (2) winners will receive one (1) mystery Xbox 360 package each. Approximate retail value is incalcuable.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Friday, April 17th, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Engadget turns 5!

A wise man once said: "Life moves pretty fast -- if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

At Engadget, that's more than true. We're usually so busy with our heads down -- fingers furiously tapping away on keyboards, news flying in at a breakneck pace -- that we barely have time to take measure of it all. We've been so busy, in fact, that we somehow managed to miss our own 5th birthday... by over a month! If you want to date check that, you can read our very first post right here.

Luckily, we happen to have the most amazing group of readers in the world, and one of them, rock99rock, shook us out of our news-trance and reminded us that we should probably spare a little time for reflection.

So, we don't want to make a huge deal of it, but we do want to thank everyone who visits the site everyday and keeps making it what it is. We'd be nothing without the eyes and minds of the obsessive, brilliant, and frankly handsome fans that are as voracious about reading tech news as we are about writing it. You're the soul of Engadget, and we thank you from the bottom of our cold, robotic hearts.

-Team Engadget

Bonus round: Stay tuned for a contest in celebration of the big event coming later today -- and have some cake for us!

Jimmy Fallon and Engadget: together again, March 9th

If you like television, staying up late, and gadgets, you'll definitely want to keep your set tuned to NBC next Monday (March 9th, for you calendar-loving types). Why you ask? Because our Editor-in-chief, Joshua Topolsky, will be guesting on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and we're pretty sure you won't want to miss it... unless you hate awesome surprises (trust us, it's a doozy). If you need your memory jogged on the last time Josh and Jimmy met up (or just haven't seen it yet) check out the video above. Then, make sure to set your alarms -- you'll be sorry if you don't!

Check out our new feature hubs!

You know, Engadget is a big place. Huge, really, and we hit a lot of news. Tons even. Metric tons. When there's a big story happening, we often do a number of posts covering every possible angle imaginable. We love being super thorough -- and we know you love it too -- but sometimes you don't want to go searching all over the place for that news (or searching for all the news on that item). So we've introduced individual pages for the big stories of the moment (or "hubs," as we've been calling them) -- they're just over there, on the right rail. They basically put all the really high priority material we have on a given device / event / experience in an easy to reach place, along with our hand plucked videos and galleries, so you get the whole story, not just little bits and pieces. Of course, they also let you see every single thing we've tagged for that particular story too, if that's your cup of tea. Our hope is that it makes it easier to make sense of the loads of material we write... and not-so-secretly, we think they look pretty cool too.

Too much cellphone news on Engadget?

You may be surprised to learn this, but we're currently at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, which is basically the CES of cellphone shows. We've seen a handful of emails from confused readers who didn't understand why the site was stacked from floor to ceiling with cellphone news -- and we wanted to clear things up. We're not just covering the news because there's a tradeshow going on, of course. There are some huge stories breaking at MWC, and we'd be remiss in our duties if we didn't cover every single one of them. Now, some of you may ask why we don't just carry the news on Engadget Mobile; the simple answer is that we are covering the news on Engadget Mobile, but the stuff that we feel has crossover relevance and appeal (which happens to be a lot this year) ends up on Engadget Classic as well. If you can't handle the insane and awesome torrent of phone-related news, you can subscribe to a special feed we've set up with Yahoo! Pipes which axes our MWC stories, but to be frank, you'll be missing a lot of really cool gadget news. Hey, it's your call.

What happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas -- Engadget departs CES

Well this was one for the record books. Between the full-court press of 3DHD, Sony's announcement of the VAIO P netbook... er, ultraportable, and the nuclear bomb that was the Palm Pre announcement, no one will forget this CES anytime soon. As in previous years, the Engadget team came, saw, and worked nonstop to cover every piece of gear we could get our hands on. After keeping it in the red for days on end, we're all feeling pretty burnt and ready for a long nap, but insanely stoked that we could bring you CES the way it's meant to be experienced: like a screaming neon blur.

We'll be back in full force for CES 2010, but until then, you can gestate on our hard numbers and sad trailer teardown video after the break.

Update:
We're adding pics to the gallery, and just added a new video of us working as we normally do.
