Engadget Review

The best thing about the new Amazon Echo? Its price. At $100, it’s cheaper than the original, Google Home and Sonos One. But it also sounds worse than those devices, delivering somewhat flat audio that emphasizes the high end and vocals at the expense of bass. Still, the second-generation Echo is quick to decipher your commands and Alexa is smart as a whip. Unless you're married to Google Assistant or Siri, this is a decent option for those buying their first smart speaker.

Overall, I like the new Echo even more than the old ones because, in additional to hosting an increasingly intelligent and useful voice assistant, it is now cheaper, louder, smaller, better at blending into my home décor, and, most importantly, an even better listener.

This year's Amazon Echo is a great-looking, affordable smart speaker with the best voice assistant technology.

The real product Amazon is selling is Alexa, and for an in-home virtual assistant, Alexa is very good. And if you want the best way to use Alexa, the new Echo is it.

If you’re looking for a way to experience Alexa, or to bring other Echos into your house, the new Echo is arguably the best way—at least until December, when the Echo Spot shows up.

We’re glad the Echo is more affordable and more compact than before, but a little disappointed sound quality took a turn for the worse. Overall, the new Echo is more approachable and will likely be extremely popular.

In many ways, there’s no downside to the new Echo. It’s half the price of its predecessor, more compact and more attractive, and gets every talent and skill added over the past three years. You’re no longer limited to one design, either, and the voice recognition is a little improved.

Amazon's second-gen Echo is more attractive and more affordable than the original, but its speaker isn't nearly as good.

The Amazon Echo is already the best smart speaker you can buy thanks to its ability to communicate with hundreds of connected devices ... The addition of a vastly improved design, and slightly upgraded sound, simply serve to make it a more attractive purchase for first-time smart speaker buyers.
