Engadget Summary

The Ultimate Ears line from Logitech has always tried to deliver big, punchy sound, and those intentions have never been more clear with the naming of their new UE Megaboom. This speaker is tough, portable and offers the same stellar audio the line excels in, though the price might put it a bit out of reach for some.

The Megaboom is as physically imposing as its name might suggest, offering up a sturdy and functional design that PC World Australia says can take "a hell of a beating." Digital Trends calls it the "most robust speaker in its genre," possibly "tough enough for a drop from a considerable height" and maybe even capable of being used as "a weapon in a pinch."

While its rugged waterproof nature means you can take it anywhere, the Megaboom's cylindrical shape suggests you can put it anywhere too, with Digital Trends noting "shape and driver configuration are designed to allow it to excel in virtually any position." So stand it up or lie it down, it doesn't make a difference in how good the Megaboom sounds.

And how good does the Megaboom sound? Well, PC World Australia happily notes it's "beautifully crisp and clear, and well rounded," with more than enough voiume for anyone. What Hi-Fi says its "punchy, energetic delivery comes straight to the fore," with "solidity and precision through the bass, the midrange and treble." They find it "bristling with life" and Re/code concurs, saying the Megaboom's bass notes "got me and my toddler to start swaying our hips." Overall, What Hi-Fi says it might not be "the ultimate in refinement," but its certainly "well balanced."

CNET notes that the UE Megaboom improves on its smaller siblings in a lot of ways, "including a larger size, bigger sound (particularly on bass), better waterproofing and extended battery life." But one way it doesn't improve is on price, with these features coming at a $100 premium. But, given its size and output, anyone willing to lay out $300 for a Megaboom will be more than satisfied.

The lower entry price makes them pretty good friends with your wallet too.
