Engadget Review

After years of thoughtful refinements to the Moto X line, Motorola has plotted a new direction with the Moto Z. It's incredibly slim, modular, and packs true flagship-level horsepower -- all things you couldn't really say about last year's Moto X Pure edition. Still, the lack of a headphone jack, the modest battery life and the fact that it's a Verizon exclusive mean this version of the Moto Z won't be right for everyone.

Ambitious, quirky and ultimately useful, the Motorola Moto Z is the most polished and customizable modular phone yet.

If Lenovo's goal was to stray from the pack and do something a little different, it succeeded. The Moto Z and Moto Mods are unique. They're fun. They're a little gimmicky. But they're definitely different.

The Moto Z is supposed to be a great phone, and then some. ... it’s not as polished or sculpted a phone as Samsung’s Galaxy S7. Nor is its camera as good. Nor is it waterproof. Nor does it have a headphone jack. Okay, the GS7 is probably a better phone. But the Z is a great phone.

For the sake of being a weird gadget, the Moto Z Droid receives full marks. But as a phone, I’m not quite buying it. ... the Moto Z Droid feels only partially complete, no doubt because Moto really wants you to buy those mods. It’s even building up a developer community around the idea.

Digital Trends
The Moto Z is a phone that’s best suited for tech enthusiasts who are dying to try out modules. It’s an innovative, interesting device that does modules better than any other phone ... thus far, but it will cost you a lot extra for the mods and for a new pair of wireless headphones.

We think most people will be fine with the standard Moto Z along with a power pack Moto Mod. You'll get a thinner and lighter phone with nearly as good a camera, and the power pack will give you off-the-charts battery life when you need it.

DroidLife
On one hand you get a phone that is beautiful to look at with top tier specs for the most part, a lovely software experience, and a stunning display. On the other, you get an average camera, average battery life, a phone that isn’t that much fun to hold, and availability that stops at Verizon.

While its take on ‘the future’ needs to further prove itself, the potential of the new Moto Z line could take already pretty great smartphones to a whole new level.

For many, though, the Mods may not be compelling enough to make the Moto Z their phone of choice, especially since they come at a high price. At the moment, they’re more of a novelty than a necessity, which is a barrier competitors like LG and Google will also face.

Phandroid
The Moto Z Droid aims to rethink the possibilities of a modular design, all within a sleek and sexy body. Even with its downfalls, the device has just set the bar for modular smartphones. Additionally, much of the Moto Z Droid’s capabilities are hinged on what modules may come out in the future, and the possibilities are endless.
