Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+ hands-on

Like so many high-profile devices of the past few months, the Galaxy S10 and S10+ have been leaked to death, but there's still something exciting about the official unveiling. Maybe it's because that edge-to-edge hole-punch display looks much better in person -- not to mention what that three-camera setup is capable of, oh, and the in-screen fingerprint scanner. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Regardless of the model, the Galaxy S10 is a step forward for Samsung. No, it can’t fold in half or connect to 5G networks, but it delivers in ways that matter and doesn’t suffer from some of the drawbacks Galaxy phones have had in the past. The fingerprint sensor is finally in a good spot, and Samsung’s Android UI has taken a real leap forward. Samsung is even delivering monthly security updates these days, and that’s fantastic.

In the end, we feel like the Galaxy S10 is the superb phone we could have predicted it was going to be. Years of refinement have brought us to a place where groundbreaking changes are unlikely, but as incremental upgrades go, this is one of the more meaningful ones and it's easy to recommend.

Samsung should just ditch Bixby and stick to Google Assistant. And while the software has improved quite a bit, users would be better served using something closer to what Google offers on its own Pixel phones.

In the end, there are no real losers when looking at the new Samsung Galaxy S10 series. There’s no way you can go wrong with any of the new Galaxy phones, but the Galaxy S10e is really worth its price. It has a gorgeous display, a great camera system, and it offers the perfect balance of value and functionality for most people. What more can you ask for?

At the end of the day, I don't think Samsung's new Galaxy S10 phones will be grabbing customers from other Android phones or maybe even iPhones. It's still very much a Samsung phone in a very sort of Samsung phone formula. That's not everyone's cup of tea. It's a lot of people's cup of tea, but not everyone's. With the Galaxy S10, Samsung gives you more of everything, again. And it's certainly gonna be one of the best smartphones of 2019.
