I was considering an ASUS XenBook before finding this gem on display at Best Buy's new Samsung Store (which, ironically, was set up right across the aisle from the Apple display). I also lucked out in that during the confusion of setting up the new displays, the price tag was printed incorrectly and I got this baby for $300 off the list price! Talk about a deal! I got a fabulous ultrabook and got to screw BB all in the same day!But I digress...DESIGN/STYLE: This UltraBook has the look and the feel of a premium quality machine. Tight tolerances on the body work, clean lines, even the color is perfect (for me anyway). The only problem with the finish is that it is very prone to picking up fingerprints. Other than that it looks great. The case is very solid, all-aluminum, and very thin. It feels nice in your hands whether carrying or holding for use. Ports are easily accessible. Only possible drawback are the cooling intake vents on the bottom are easily covered up if using on a lap. Also the heat vents out the back do make it a bit warm to use wearing shorts or other garments where your legs are exposed. The keyboard is backlit with adaptable lighting as is the screen. Great to use in lower light conditions. The touchpad is large and supports multi-touch which is helpful considering Windows 8's insistence on a touchy interface. Can hardly wait for the 8.1 upgrade!PERFORMANCE: I doubt this will win any awards for speed. Having a brand new dual Core i7 mobile processor in it I guess I was expecting more. It performs very well with standard office apps, web browsing, etc. It does even run through video transcoding operations respectably. The main issues in performance here I believe is mainly due to the 4GB of RAM that is hardwired to the motherboard. And there isn't any option for expansion...I've looked. This means that when you're running more than one or two apps. especially Google Chrome with more than a handful of extensions installed, it will grind a little.Otherwise, I've been very pleased. The screen is sharp and clear and bright. Although admittedly at 1080p on a 13.3" screen my eyes have a little trouble making out the tinier text. The most impressive performance element is the boot time. I can turn it on from a full off state and be running by browser in less than 10 seconds.CAVEATS: There are a couple of "gotchas" with this UltraBook that aren't deal breakers, but are a bit disappointing nonetheless.First, as previously mentioned, it's only got 4GB of RAM with no possibility of upgrade. Not the greatest decision made by Samsung.Next, the SSD is only 128GB. Which isn't really all that bad with all the cloud and external options available these days. The real drawback, however, comes due to Samsung's bloated recovery system and unnecessary apps which eats up almost 30GB out of the box. And, as far as I can tell, there's no way to reclaim that space without completely wiping the drive and installing everything fresh. Which is also problematic thanks to 1) Windows 8 and 2) there is NO media included with the machine and no option to create media that I've found. You can offload the recovery media and apps to an external drive but other than that you're stuck.CONCLUSION: All in all I really do love this UltraBook. As the warranty ages and once I get my free Windows 8.1 upgrade I'm sure I'll be doing some more to "optimize" this system to my liking. Until then though I'm quite content.
